Cover Story: The improper use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 has been linked to 17,000 preventable deaths. This study investigates the emergence of this conspiracy theory, the media’s role in its dissemination, and the differences in its coverage by outlet political alignment. Using Nexis, we identified 128 media pieces from 17 to 31 March 2020 for qualitative and thematic analyses. Our findings reveal that the news media amplified right-wing political elites and employed manipulative tactics, polarising the public and creating a schism between Trump supporters and the public health apparatus. Optimistic framings and anecdotal evidence spread public misunderstandings, highlighting the need for strategic public health efforts to combat misinformation. View this paper
