Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It is recommended to provide information about the effective methods of evaluating skid resistance.
It is also better to mention the factors affecting the  skid resistance.

It is better to check the text to fix the writing problems.

Author Response

It is recommended to provide information about the effective methods of evaluating skid resistance.

See text in red in lines 200-204.

It is also better to mention the factors affecting the skid resistance.

See text in red in lines 176-186.

It is better to check the text to fix the writing problems.

An English proofreading was carried out.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper discusses the measurement principles and devices used to measure skid resistance, as well as the European Union and Hungarian measurement policies. The paper also covers the investigation of pavement surface texture, including measuring techniques, macro-texture features of asphalt types, and Hungarian regulations, as well as aggregate properties and their relevance to Hungarian specifications. The following points should be considered by the authors:

1) Lines 53-54: " macro-texture and micro-texture of a pavement surface are largely depends" → should be "largely dependent". There are other similar grammatical errors in the text as well. The authors are encouraged to revise the text thoroughly for grammatical errors.

2) The Section 1. Introduction should present a comprehensive review of other research work from the literature. Furthermore, a paragraph at the end of the Introduction section should be dedicated to explain the novelty and research significance of this current study.

3) Figure 1 and Figure 2 are identical. Please correct. Furthermore, the image quality could be improved.

4) There are unnecessary hyphen symbols in the middle of some words like "cont-rolled" in line 292 or "inhe-rent" in line 286. Please remove them.

5) Sections 3.1, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 have the identical name "Measurement principles". Please correct. If these sections are about the same concepts, then they should be condensed into one section.

6) A conclusion section which presents the main research findings is missing. The summary section should be included in the conclusion section.

The text includes some grammatical errors which should be corrected.

Thank you, corrected section titles: 4.1. Measurement principles of surface structure 4.2 Pavement texture measurement 4.3. Macro-texture properties of various asphalt mixture types (lines 301, 357, 396)

6) A conclusion section which presents the main research findings is missing. The summary section should be included in the conclusion section.

See text in red in lines 590 and 614-618.

The text includes some grammatical errors which should be corrected.

Reviewer 3 Report

1.     The title should be more elaborative.

2.     Please clarify study type and methodology in the abstract. The text of the abstract needs to be different than the text of the remaining paper. Please see the first lines of the abstract and introduction.

3.     Line 10: "Rotating slides along the pavement surface”?

4.     Line 92: decrease

5.     Line 346-347: Drainage

6.     Line 34: Is it slip or skid?

7.     Line 576: It should be Road or pavements.

8.     Line 584-588: please check for typos.

9.     Use the SI and Scientific notation in Figure 1 for the Y axis. And all the equations use X instead of * and superscript instead of ^. Also, use consistent placing of commas (,) and periods (.) see Equation 4 and Table 2.

10.   Line 63- 67: Aren’t these too basic for a research paper? I suggest directly focusing only on necessary information.

11.   Figures 1 and 2 are the same.

12.   Table 5 is difficult to understand.

13.   Please add not applicable in empty values of Table 1, if so.

14.   Section 3.3: Wouldn’t it be better to call it Introduction to measuring policy in EU?

15.   In Table 4: what are the criteria of Critical factors?

Overall the writing is fine.

Author Response

The title should be more elaborative.

The title was changed to reflect the review character of the paper (line 2).

  1. Please clarify study type and methodology in the abstract. The text of the abstract needs to be different than the text of the remaining paper. Please see the first lines of the abstract and introduction.

As required, the two texts (in red) were slightly changed to avoid their identity (lines 10-13 and 26-31).

  1. Line 10: "Rotating slides along the pavement surface”?

The objected text was omitted .

Reviewer 4 Report

I have a few comments that might be usefully addressed to improve the overall quality of the paper and some minor observation:

-       The introduction should be more detailed with some other papers result in this field. Some of the papers are already cited, but the introduction should contain a little bit more presentation of other reasearchers works.

-       The main content of the paper is very well written, but the conclusions need improvement, now they are vaguely written text in order to highlight the results obtained.

-       The experimental program is detailed and the quality of the results’ discussion in its current form satisfies the requirements necessary for a research paper.

My opinion is to try to explain better the effect of asphalt mixture macrotexture in hydroplaning phenomenon.

The paper is therefore very well suited to this journal. The authors are to be commended on the professional quality of the research and the paper.

Author Response

The introduction should be more detailed with some other papers result in this field. Some of the papers are already cited, but the introduction should contain a little bit more presentation of other reasearchers works.

Thank you for the remark; the reason that we did not detail more literature in the Introduction was that the authors wished to avoid the repetition of literature review, which was done in later chapters.

The main content of the paper is very well written, but the conclusions need improvement, now they are vaguely written text in order to highlight the results obtained.

Conclusions were rewritten and more detailed (lines 590-614).

My opinion is to try to explain better the effect of asphalt mixture macrotexture in hydroplaning phenomenon.

See the text in red in lines 354-356.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper is suitable for publication.

Reviewer 3 Report

Thank you for the corrected manuscript. With regard to previous comments, the following are a few corrections required.

    1. Line 576: It should be Road or pavements.

Road pavement: See the text in red in line 599.

Still, it requires correction, it should only be pavement.
    1. Line 584-588: please check for typos.

Thank you, See the text in red in lines 607-610.

It should be “PSV”, “MDE”, “LA”, “C”
Please see the typo in line 223 i.e. measuring

English langue is overall fine.
