Cover Story: Improving feed efficiency in dairy herds is an important goal for dairy farmers. One proposed method to improve efficiency is to target the rumen microbiome, which is primarily responsible for converting feed into nutrients. In this study, we show that the bacterial, fungal, and archaeal ruminal microbes are different between cows with high and low milk production efficiencies and further identify key microbes associated with each phenotype. These data can provide a framework for targeted methods to alter the ruminal microbiome for improved feed efficiency in dairy cows, thereby leading to higher milk production. View this paper
