Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Associated Health Risks in Honey from Kellem Wollega Zone, Ethiopia
Highlights
- This study detected seven heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn, Cd) in honey samples by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) from the Kellem Wollega Zone.
- The concentration of lead and cadmium in the honey exceeded the safety limits established by the FAO and WHO.
- A comprehensive health risk assessment, which found the Average Daily Dose, Target Hazard Quotient, Hazard Index, and Target Cancer Risk, revealed a significant public health concern associated with the consumption of this honey.
- The detection of heavy metals, especially at unsafe levels in honey, is a significantly critical public health risk, demanding immediate intervention and stricter safety standards.
- The findings expose critical gaps in local safety and environmental oversight, underscoring the urgent need for stricter pollution controls, enhanced food monitoring, and the implementation of pretreatment protocols to ensure consumer safety.
