The following comments may help the authors to improve the manuscript:

  1. Figure 11:  both of the figures seem to have only 2 data points for each curves.
  2. There is lack of information on the control experiments for measuring the color intensity (table 1 and figure 6).
  3. The authors should comments on the scaling up and production of the POCT device towards commercialization.
  4. How is the sensitivity of this testing method compared to other available testing devices. See https://www.future-science.com/doi/full/10.4155/bio-2021-0100 and https://dx.doi.org/10.3390%2Fbios9030085

Jin and coworkers reported a smartphone-based method for lateral flow test with AuNPs. Although the idea and concept seems to be proved, there are several issues need to be addressed:

  1. The AuNPs characterisation included TEM images and size distribution analysis are required.
  2. All graphs need standard deviation for every single point with at least N=3. 
  3. It was not clear why 3 smartphone models has been chosen. PLease clarify if they are inexpensive, possess the best camera, the most popular, etc. 
  4. Please compare R, G and B chanel in Table 1.
  5. PLease indicate method to inverse RGB value to HONOR10 and stronglight greyscale value.
  6. Please compare the AuNPs intensity and sensitivity of the developed system compared to the UV-vis method.
  7. Once mentioning the RSD or other statistic value, please add reference to confirm if those values are acceptable. Otherwise, student-t test is required to indicate significant and not-significant differences.
  8. Importantly, please test the system against artificial urine or serum which appears with yellow medium and compare if the sensitivity still remain or need to be adjusted.
