Full article

Data from retrospective analysis of 21 forensic testimonials are presented here. All probands (age 33.2 years median) had been prior subject to correctional treatment and were found to have a misadventageous legal prognosis, so they were now condemned to be placed in custodial conditions (according to Art. 43, 1, 2 of the Switzerian penal code). The leading axis-1 diagnosis was that of alcohol and/or drug-related dependency or misuse. Personality diagnosis seems to be of major importance; all except two persons were found to exhibit abnormal personality traits in conjunction with their delinquent behavior. Diagnosis of axis-2 disorder could be characterized by a great diversity of methods and implicite reference to different personality typologies. Criteria-based diagnosis according to the DSM (III-R or -IV) or ICD-10 algorithmus was seldom used. Forensic judgement on person’s legal prognosis was mainly influenced by the historical aspects of antecendent delinquent behavior and lack of therapeutic efficacy. Only a smaller part of the testimonials had referred to a more complex criteriology of prognostic judgement, integrating historical as well as actual, static as well as dynamic aspects of delinquents social behavior, their psychic reactions to and further processing of criminal behavior and the institutional aspects of therapeutic interaction. The hallucinatory contents in delirium tremens in the past 100 years are noted in a compilation of patient records. The comparison of four groups before and after the two World Wars showed that hallucinations have decreased on the whole both in quantity and in quality owing to improved medication. Apart from the advent of new technology, the hallucinatory contents have not changed much. When visual hallucinations predominate, these are shown to be largely dependent on the environment. With the urbanisation of the population, hallucinatory contents relating particularly to the rural environment also disappear.Visual hallucinations show a relatively greater decline than the auditory hallucinations. This also indicates the different responsiveness to medication and is analogous to the alcohol-induced hallucinosis which is more difficult to influence compared to delirium tremens. Full article

This is the first scientific descriptive evaluation of the basic data 1995 from persons who in old age were enrolled in psychiatric hospitals in the canton of Zurich. Two thirds of the investigated cases concern women aged 65 to 100 years, and one third concern men aged 65 to 93 years. While the majority of men are married, women are not. The proportion of widowed persons rises with age, but faster with women than with men. The majority of men lives with their family members in a private home. Women of some age categories live predominantly alone. F0 (organic disease) is diagnosed most often and especially with men. F3 and F2 diagnoses follow on the second and third place respectively, and are especially made for women. With rising age the percentage of persons rises who become psychiatric in-patients for the first time in their lives. While already the youngest patients with organic diagnoses are released to specialised therapeutic institutions, patients with F2 and F3 diagnoses are able to remain in their private homes until very old age. In consideration with the general increase in suicide cases, we decided to better understand the specific tendencies relative to the canton of Ticino and verify whether the information available allows to identify factors more frequently associated to suicidal behaviours with lethal outcome. This study is based on simple data, namely on information concerning the years 1984–1995, provided by the police of the canton: the data include the year of birth and death, gender, nationality, civil status, the profession, residence status, and whether the person was assisted by a physician.
