Cover Story: This study examined whether the person-environment misfit between students' personal sociopolitical orientations and the social norms rooted in the culture of an educational setting leads people to adopt different motivations to study. We tested this hypothesis among undergraduate social work students and found that the more students exhibited higher social dominance orientation (i.e., personal support for group-based hierarchies and inequalities), the more they reported higher levels of perceived misfit with social work values and, in turn, greater extrinsic motivation to study (i.e., studying to obtain rewards and social prestige) versus intrinsic (i.e., inherent enjoyment of studying social work subjects) goals. The implications for students' commitment to social work practice were discussed. View this paper
