| Intermediate | A variant which is intermediate between canonical [th] and fricative [t̞]. It has the auditory percept of a fricated stop and evidence of frication, but there can also be burst characteristics evident acoustically (e.g., Jones & McDougall, 2009). This category would be “fricative” if the analysis was auditory only and is used as a precaution so that the “fricative” label pertains only to a purely fricative /t/. |
| Pre-glottalized [ˀt] and pre-glottalized unreleased [ˀt̚ ] | A stop which has glottal activity and unreleased supralaryngeal closure and is primarily unreleased in nature, or it can have a brief release (which is not aspirated). | Ejective [t’] | A variant fitting either of two main acoustic characterizations: (1) a period of closure followed by release of the supralaryngeal gesture, a period of “silence”, and a second release which coincides with glottal opening, or (2) a case without the silence, where glottal opening occurs immediately after oral release. In the present data, ejectives often show sharp “spikes” on the waveform correlated with burst intensity. |
