This manuscript presents an experimental and theoretical study of an integrated system of RTD (resonant tunneling diode) and waveguide. I think its main purpose is to demonstrate the integrability and compactability of the device. High output signal is reported -- an output power of -7 dBmW at ~90 GHz is presented. However, I do not think the experiment and simulations, as shown in Figure 4, could support each other. I think this manuscript has to be improved before it could be accepted to publish (the current presentation much likes an experimental report with only a little discussion rather than an article in a journal). My main suggestions/concerns are listed below for the authors' consideration.

 

  1. Some texts are lack of logic. For example, for the introduction part, the authors claim that "In this paper, a W band RTD with rectangular waveguide output is presented, which is first achieved, to the best of our knowledge". But I only find limited descriptions of "W-band RTD" before this sentence. More info should be given regarding (1) the "difficulty" and (2) the technical nessecity for the integration of a RTD with rectangular waveguide faced by the scientific society. On the other hand, as a natural question, are there any reports on simular integration for frequency bands other than the W-band? In my opinion, these are more logical to constitute the content of the introduction part.
  2. I encourage the authors give more informatic figure captions. As an example, instead of only stating "Simulated and measured S-parameters of the transition.", more simulations details could be helpful for a potential reader.
  3. Typo in the title of Table 1 "Performance of the transformer." The "Performance" could be "Geometrical parameters".
  4. I think the result in Figure 6 needs to be further explained.
  5. Please make the following change: "The oscillator frequency is about 90 ±2 GHz" --> "The oscillator frequency ranges from ... GHz to ... GHz".

I hope these examples could help the authors improve the presentation and discussion of this manuscript.
