Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper explores the size of rural village household construction land using a qualitative approach. The study topic is of significant novelty and the methodology is feasible. The results were presented and discussed well. However, the paper needs some major language and structure changes before considering publication.

First, the abstract is very redundant. Please focus on the research question, the method and key findings and reduce the words in the abstract;

Second, please remove figure 1 and move to the methodology section if needed;

Third, I completely lost in table 1 and am not sure if that is a format error or something else;

Fourth, some of the terms, such as "theoretical potential value" needs to be clearly defined and explained;

Fifth, please move the method formulas in the results and analysis section to the methodology section, and restructure it by clarifying the method, data input, and what the output will be.

Response 1: Thank you very much for valuable comments.

We have reorganized the abstract according to your suggestion. Some expressions are condensed, and some important information about data sources, research methods and main conclusions are added and clarified. Modified some inappropriate places and expressions.

Point2: Second, please remove figure 1 and move to the methodology section if needed;

Response 2: We have redrawn and moved figure 1 to the methodology section.

Point3: Third, I completely lost in table 1 and am not sure if that is a format error or something else;

Response 3: We readjusted Table 1 and explained it further.

Point4: Fourth, some of the terms, such as "theoretical potential value" needs to be clearly defined and explained;

Response 4: We have further defined and explained some of the terms clearly.

Point5: Fifth, please move the method formulas in the results and analysis section to the methodology section, and restructure it by clarifying the method, data input, and what the output will be.

Response 5: We have moved the method formulas in the results and analysis section to the methodology section, and restructured it by clarifying the method, data input, and what the output will be.

Comments of review

This study explores The scale potential and resource optimization of rural housing land under utility structure evaluation in metropolitan suburbs villages of China. There is greater realistic usability. It can be used as a reference for the current rural homestead reform in China. But the author needs to emphasize the following points to make it easier for readers to understand.

Chinas system and system are quite different from capitalist countries, and the relationship between land is also very different. The author needs to discuss what rural homesteads are and how they are different from Western countries, and they need to explain clearly.

Is the author's evaluation of the utility of rural homesteads around Beijing universal and needs to be emphasized, or is it just a regional feature?

The discussion part is also relatively weak, and the contribution and application prospects of the article need to be increased. And need to discuss how the article's conclusions or methods contribute to existing knowledge and complement past research.

Thank you very much for your good question.

Point1: China’s system and system are quite different from capitalist countries, and the relationship between land is also very different. The author needs to discuss what rural homesteads are and how they are different from Western countries, and they need to explain clearly.

Response1:  That's true. We have discussed what rural housing land are and how they are different from Western countries under the background of public ownership of land in China.

Point2: Is the author's evaluation of the utility of rural homesteads around Beijing universal and needs to be emphasized, or is it just a regional feature?

Response2: Rural housing land is widely distributed in the world, with great regional differences. Just taking a county (district) in Beijing, China as an example, it is indeed not representative enough to a certain degree. However, from one point of view, the authors considers that the empirical research area, Pinggu District, located in mountainous areas and counties in the northeast of Beijing, where is a significant metropolitan suburbs of Beijing. Meanwhile, Pinggu District is not only the vegetable basket of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, but also an important node for its coordinated development, and it is affected by the economic radiation and driving effects of Beijing and Tianjin. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration is the centre of the Bohai Economic Rim and the third major economic growth hub in China, and it is the largest and most dynamic region in north China’s economy, attracts more attentions from China and even the whole world.

From another point of view, Pinggu District is rich in geomorphic types, with plains, mid-level mountains and mountainous areas each accounting for about one-third of the total area. There are modern agriculture in plain area and characteristic fruit industry in hilly area, while tourism industry in mountainous area, Thus it has a high heterogeneity in livelihood, living style and land use of farmers in various topographic areas. The selected villages include urban villages, suburban villages and outer suburbs, covering different village development types. As a typical  metropolitan suburbs, Pinggu District has experienced a great social and economic transformation in recent years, with rapid urban and rural development and strong changes in population structure and land use pattern. The rural land use problem, which is mainly characterized by "building the new but not demolishing the old, leaving the countryside to go to the city, and surplus old house base", has gradually become prominent and the bottleneck of urban and rural coordinated development and new rural construction. Therefore, this study can provide an typical empirical reference for regions with similar location conditions in the world.

Point3: The discussion part is also relatively weak, and the contribution and application prospects of the article need to be increased. And need to discuss how the article's conclusions or methods contribute to existing knowledge and complement past research.

Response3: We have increased the contribution and application prospects of the article, discussed how the article's conclusions or methods contribute to existing knowledge and complement past research. The related references are added and the mechanism diagram is adjusted.

Response 1: Thank you very much for valuable comments.

We apologize for the poor language of our manuscript. We worked on the manuscript for a long time and the repeated addition and removal of sentence and sections obviously led to poor readability.We have now worked on both language and readability and have also involved native English speakers for language corrections.We really hope that the flow and language level have been substantially improved.

We have checked reference and their marks.
