The review entitled: Microbial Ecology of the Planetary Boundary Layer provides a current and complete update of the most important sources and processes that determine microbial community composition and dynamics in the planetary boundary layer.
It is a relevant and interesting subject nowadays, it is not totally original, but in last decade there were few works addressing such subject, most of them original works. In comparison to other reviews, this one in particular shows high quality.
The work is very well written, clear and easy to read, even for not specialists. In the end, the main conclusions are well supported with the right works and address the main question posed.
This is the most recent review about the microbial ecology that can be useful for researchers, general public and teachers that address such topics.

The manuscript is well-written, the authors have conducted a thorough investigation of existing literature and very eloquently present the state of the art in the field. The manuscript certainly deserves scientific merit and therefore i am of the opinion that it should be published in the journal Atmosphere.
