Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this article useful information on Composting heat recovery for residential consumption. An assessment of viability has been provided. However, author need to address following comments in order to publish in this journal.

1.      Introduction is very general without any data. Author should add overall energy consumption and emission data . They can refer following most related articles for related information: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.desal.2017.03.009

2.      Many statements in introduction are without references. Authors should refer each statement from where it was extracted.

3.      Equations need more detail, specially constants used.

4.      Results need more explanation, why lines have specific trend.

5.      Overall English need to improve.

Article need major revision for publication.

Author Response

Thank you very much for the pointed feedback for our paper. Please find bellow the comments and responses for each of the issues highlighted.

Thank you for the observation. Relevant data has now been included in the introduction section.

Many statements in introduction are without references. Authors should refer each statement from where it was extracted

Thank you for pointing out this mistake. The missing references have now been included.

Equations need more detail, specially constants used

Thank you for the comment. The constants used have now been described and their values, where missing, included.

Results need more explanation, why lines have specific trend

The description of the results has been modified to improve clarity.

The difference in the trend lines come from the monthly characterization explained in Section 2.3.1. In summary, a theoretical household of similar characteristics, materials, and composition was “placed” in the four countries studied. The behavior of the occupants is also assumed similar (represented by the air exchanges per hour ACH). Therefore, the main differentiation between demands from country to country lies on the difference between their climates.

For the difference between the two presented water-heating demands, the first “trend shapes” follow similar curves are the space heating demand. The second water heating demand shape assumes a more evenly distributed consumption of hot water throughout the year.

Paragraphs have been included in the text to more clearly reflect this distinction.

Overall English need to improve

An overall language revision has been made.

Reviewer 2 Report

This article still needs to be improved both in terms of the description of the explanation of the results obtained and also the way of presenting figures and tables in accordance with journal standards. Units related to the equations used in the use of data need to be added. Nomenclature should also be added at the end of this article. For more detailed comments, please see the enclosed draft.

This article still needs to be improved both in terms of the description of the explanation of the results obtained

Thank you for the observation. The results have now been more accurately described.

the way of presenting figures and tables in accordance with journal standards

Thank you for pointing this out, an overall revision of figures and tables has been done to ensure the standards are followed.

Units related to the equations used in the use of data need to be added

The units related to the equations have now been included where missing.

Nomenclature should also be added at the end of this article

A table containing the nomenclature has been included at the end of the artcle.

PDF comments

Thank you for the extensive review. The changes mentioned in the PDF have now been made.

Reviewer 3 Report

The presented article concerns heat recovery from composting for residential consumption. The authors rightly note that composting is not a new topic, and heat from composting has already been extensively studied. However, based on their extensive literature study, it was found that there is little work in the literature addressing the application of coomb heat to the residential sector. The authors rightly point out that this work, although primarily a review, tries to fill a small quantity of this evident gap by proving that compost heat can have viability for household use. Additionally, it should be noted that the considerations presented in the paper are only theoretical. Such an annotation should already be included in the abstract of this article.

In my opinion, Figure 1 should be improved in the article. In its present form, it is difficult to read and analyze the information presented therein. It would also be worth presenting a more detailed description of the assumptions adopted for the analysis. It is mainly about the analyzed residential building.

I recommend this article for publication after minor revision.

It should be noted that the considerations presented in the paper are only theoretical. Such an annotation should already be included in the abstract of this article

Thank you for the observation. The abstract has been modified to reflect the theoretical quality of the paper.

Figure 1 should be improved in the article. In its present form, it is difficult to read and analyze the information presented therein

Thank you for the comment. Figure 1, now Figure 2, has been modified to fit in one page and the figures themselves have been reorganized to represent their data in a clearer manner. A paragraph has been included in the text (lines 48 to 57) to more accurately describe this figure.

It would also be worth presenting a more detailed description of the assumptions adopted for the analysis. It is mainly about the analyzed residential building

The assumptions adopted for the analysis presented in the paper have now been more clearly described. Additional paragraphs have been added or old ones modified to include this.
