Microbiome Changes in Perimenopause: New Marker and Therapy Targets

A woman’s microbiome changes over the course of her life, and it is subject to hormonal changes during perimenopause. The diversity of the microorganisms in the gut decreases with age but increases once more, especially in the genital area, following menopause. Both processes can influence the hormonal status of perimenopausal women and their susceptibility to different symptoms. Regardless of the body region, the microbiome serves as an individual fingerprint, shaped by genetic predisposition, environmental conditions, and age. Many women experience a variety of symptoms, particularly during perimenopause. Genital symptoms often include urinary tract infections, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, etc.
This Special Issue focuses on the interplay between the different microbiomes at this life stage and their associated symptoms and conditions. Gaining a deeper understanding of the gut microbiota–brain axis, gut–vaginal axis, and gut–vaginal–bladder axis—all of which represent bidirectional interactions involving metabolic, neuroendocrine, and immune pathways—provides an opportunity for an integrative approach and targeted therapeutic interventions.
This call for papers aims to gather the latest research and developments in microbiome studies, vaginom testing, next generation sequencing (NGS), microbiome-focused supplements and food diets, microbiome transplantation, and interdisciplinary applications in the treatment of perimenopausal symptoms. We welcome submissions that explore innovative approaches to improving patient outcomes and enhance our understanding of the microbiome. Topics of Interest: This Special Issue is dedicated to publishing original research papers, reviews, perspectives, and views and comments that address, but are not limited to, the following topics and questions: Microbiome diagnostics and new developments in NGS; Microbiome testing: What are the indications? Hormone–microbiota interactions during menopause; Vaginal microbiome changes during perimenopause; Gut–microbiota–brain axis, gut–vaginal axis, and gut–vaginal–bladder axis; Food engineering for microbiome changes; Probiotics and prebiotics: Do they play a role in menopause-related diseases? Microbiota-based supplements: Time for standardisation? Microbiome transplantation: How far have we come? Connections between the microbiome and menopause for healthy ageing; Microbiome therapies in longevity and regenerative medicine.
