Protein Engineering and Artificial Enzyme: Advancing Biocatalysis and Biomaterial Applications
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Advancing biocatalysis through enzyme engineering represents a multidisciplinary scientific sector of molecular biology, protein design, chemical catalysis, and materials science, aimed at improving the efficiency, selectivity, and stability of industrial and environmental transformations. By integrating structural insights with directed evolution and computational design, researchers can develop artificial enzymes and nanozymes with added value in catalyzing non-natural reactions, operating under extreme conditions, or enabling cascade processes within sustainable manufacturing systems. This scientific research approach ameliorates biocatalytic performance and reduces reliance on traditional chemical catalysts, particularly in applications such as fine chemical synthesis, agricultural chemistry, polymer degradation, and bioremediation.
Furthermore, advanced engineered enzyme systems support the development of green chemistry and bio-based material, where biocatalysts are designed and developed for specific substrates, reaction environments, or material interfaces. Advances in protein engineering, combined with stimulus-responsive nanozyme platforms and bioorthogonal catalytic systems, also improve real-time control of reaction kinetics and facilitate the construction of functional biomaterials with programmable properties.
Professor Mengfan Wang, a highly cited researcher working at the intersection of enzyme engineering and artificial enzyme, has inspired this thematic issue. Her broader scientific impact aligns with the principles of molecular innovation — including the design of functional mimic enzyme systems — making her work highly relevant to advancing precision biocatalysis and biomaterial design through enzyme and protein engineering.
The Topic "Protein Engineering and Artificial Enzyme: Advancing Biocatalysis and Biomaterial Applications" provides a platform to publish both reviews and original research papers.
