Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sleep disorders and mental health problems have a significant burden of disease collectively and as individual disorders, but clear estimates of their combined burden are limited. Furthermore, the associations between some mental health problems and sleep disorders are traditionally known but others are novel and lack clear pathophysiological links and causal direction, resolving which is required to inform the primary and secondary prevention of either condition arising from the other. Some associations are seemingly bi-directional, making this understanding ever more important.
We are pleased to invite you to fill some of these knowledge gaps related to the association between sleep disorders and mental health and the combined burden of disease of the two conditions. Whereas the findings from cross-sectional and case–control studies can provide some suggestions for the directions of associations, we strongly encourage findings from longitudinal studies including randomized controlled trials that provide compelling evidence for these. Evidence from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies can show the extent of the burden of these linked conditions.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the prevalence or burden of disease of sleep disorders and mental health problems/psychiatric disorders;
- Original articles on the prevalence or burden of disease of sleep disorders and mental health problems/psychiatric disorders;
- Original articles or systematic/scoping/narrative reviews on the association between sleep disorders and mental health including causal links;
- Methodological articles on the assessment of sleep disorders and mental health;
- Reviews of good clinical practices and practice guidelines.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.
