Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microplastics are a pressing global concern due to their pervasive presence in the environment and their documented entry into the human body. This Topic Collection focuses on advancing scientific understanding of microplastic exposure, toxicological pathways, and potential health consequences in humans. We welcome original research articles, reviews, communications, and opinion papers addressing the current distribution of microplastics across the food chain, and their ingestion and inhalation routes.

Special attention will be given to studies exploring the interaction of microplastics with physiological, biochemical, and clinical parameters, as well as investigations on the role of lifestyle factors and environmental exposure patterns in shaping individual microplastic burdens.

We also encourage submissions on the behavior, degradation, transformation, and toxicity of microplastics within the human body, alongside novel analytical techniques to detect, quantify, and characterize microplastics in biological samples. Contributions involving forensic investigations and microplastics detected during autopsies are also of interest. This Collection aims to bring together multidisciplinary insights to clarify the potential health risks associated with environmental microplastic exposure and to support evidence-based public health policies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microplastics is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
