The influence of zirconia incorporation and template type on the physicochemical properties of NiMo/Al2O3-ZrO2 catalysts was investigated for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) and the hydrogenation (HYD) of naphthalene (N). Catalysts were prepared by co-impregnation on supports synthesized via a sol-gel method using starch (A) and activated carbon (C) as structure-directing templates, followed by zirconium incorporation through a grafting procedure. The resulting materials were characterized by SEM–EDX, N2 physisorption, H2-TPR, XPS, HRTEM, and pyridine-FTIR. SEM-EDX confirmed homogeneous metal distributions and compositions close to nominal values (Mo = 20 wt%, Ni = 5 wt%, Zr = 11 wt%) with Ni/(Ni + Mo) = 0.30. N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms correspond to type IV(a) with H3-H4 hysteresis loops, characteristic of mesoporous structures. After metal incorporation, surface areas decreased to 96 m2 g−1 for NiMo/Al2O3 and 81 m2 g−1 for Zr-modified catalysts, while the activated carbon-templated sample preserved a larger mesoporous volume (0.335 cm3 g−1) and higher macroporosity (72%). H2-TPR profiles indicated improved reducibility for Zr-containing catalysts. XPS revealed an increase of MoS2 species from 45% in NiMo/Al2O3 to 75% in NiMo/Al2O3-ZrO2(C), accompanied by a higher degree of sulfidation index (DSI) from 47.1% to 73.9%. HRTEM analysis of Zr-modified catalysts revealed longer MoS2 slabs (11.8–12.1 nm) and higher edge-to-corner ratios (17–17.4) compared with NiMo/Al2O3 (6.2 nm; fe/fc = 8.2). Pyridine-FTIR showed a substantial increase in total acidity from 91 to 421 μmol g−1 upon Zr addition. Catalytically, NiMo/Al2O3-ZrO2(C) exhibited the highest HDS conversion (40%), reaction rate (10.5 × 10−9 mol s−1 g−1), and TOF (4.69 × 10−5 s−1), whereas NiMo/Al2O3-ZrO2(A) reached the highest naphthalene conversion (97.18%), with a reaction rate of 27.4 × 10−7 mol s−1 g−1 and TOF of 12.9 × 10−3 s−1. These results demonstrate that Zr incorporation and the activated carbon template favored hydrodesulfurization, whereas the starch template promoted hydrogenation performance. Full article

Zirconium sulfide nanoparticles (ZrxSy) are prepared on a flexible substrate of carbon cloth (CC) via a one-step synthesis approach using the low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) technique. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image reveals that the particle sizes are in the range of ca. 3~23 nm with an average value of ~13.02 nm. The synthesized ZrxSy nanoparticles are composed of ZrS3 and Zr9S2 phases, which is verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). By using the ZrxSy/CC as a supercapacitor flexible electrode, the capacitance extracted from the cyclic voltammetry measurement is 406 C g−1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s−1; the capacitance values obtained from GCD curves at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and 1 A g−1 are 151 and 134 C g−1, respectively. These results highlight the promising potential of ZrxSy as a supercapacitor material for future energy-storage technology. Full article

This study presents an experimental approach to address sulfur-induced embrittlement in copper alloys. Building on recent theoretical insights, we identified specific solute elements, such as silicon and silver, known for their strong binding affinity with vacancies. Through experimental validation, we demonstrated the effectiveness of Si and Ag in preventing sulfur-induced embrittlement in copper, even though they are not typical sulfide formers such as zirconium. Additionally, our findings highlight the advantages of these elements over traditional solutes, such as their high solubility and propensity to accumulate along grain boundaries. This approach may have the potential to be applied to other metals prone to sulfur-induced embrittlement, including nickel, iron, and cobalt, offering broader implications for materials engineering strategies and alloy development. Photoluminescent (PL) layers and electroluminescent (EL) systems have gained significant attention for their applications in constructing flat panels, screen monitors, and lighting systems. In this study, we present a groundbreaking approach to fabricating temperature sensors using barium-calcium zirconium titanate (BCZT) with thermo-optic properties, leading to the development of opto-thermal sensors for electric vehicle battery packs. We prepared zinc sulfide (ZnS) fluorescent films on BCZT ceramics, specifically two optimal compositions, BCZT0.85 (Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3) and BCZT0.9 (Ba0.9Ca0.1Zr0.1Ti0.9O3), via the solid-state reaction method for the dielectric layer. The BCZT powders were calcined at varying temperatures (1200 and 1250 °C) and dwell times (2 and 4 h). The resulting phase formation and microstructure characteristics were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Our investigation aimed to establish a correlation between the dielectric behavior and optical properties to determine the optimal composition and conditions for utilizing BCZT as thermal detectors in electric vehicle battery packs. All BCZT powders exhibited a tetragonal phase, as confirmed by JCPDS No. 01-079-2265. We observed an increase in the dielectric constant with higher calcining temperatures or longer dwell times. Remarkably, BCZT0.85 ceramic sintered at 1250 °C for 4 h displayed the highest dielectric constant of 15,342, establishing this condition as optimal for preparing the dielectric film with a maximum dielectric constant of 42. Furthermore, we investigated the temperature-dependent electroluminescence intensity of the samples, revealing a significant enhancement with increasing temperature, reaching its peak at 80 °C. Additionally, we observed a positive correlation between electroluminescence intensity and dielectric constant, indicating the potential for improved opto-thermal sensors. The findings from this study offer promising opportunities for the development of advanced opto-thermal sensors with potential applications in electric vehicle battery packs. Our work contributes to the expanding field of photoluminescent and electroluminescent systems by providing novel insights into the design and optimization of efficient and reliable sensors for thermal monitoring in electric vehicle technologies. Due to their chemical, mechanical, and optical properties, 2D ultrathin nanomaterials have significant potential in biomedicine. However, the cytotoxicity of such materials, including their mutual increase or decrease, is still not well understood. We studied the effects that graphene oxide (GO) nanolayers (with dimensions 0.1–3 μm and average individual flake thickness less than 1 nm) and ZrS3 nanoribbons (length more than 10 μm, width 0.4–3 μm, and thickness 50–120 nm) have on the viability, cell cycle, and cell death of HCT116 colon carcinoma cells. We found that ZrS3 exhibited strong cytotoxicity by causing apoptotic cell death, which was in contrast to GO. When adding GO to ZrS3, ZrS3 was significantly less toxic, which may be because GO inhibits the effects of cytotoxic hydrogen sulfide produced by ZrS3. Thus, using zirconium trisulfide nanoribbons as an example, we have demonstrated the ability of graphene oxide to reduce the cytotoxicity of another nanomaterial, which may be of practical importance in biomedicine, including the development of biocompatible nanocoatings for scaffolds, theranostic nanostructures, and others. The development of scaffold-based nanofilms for the acceleration of wound healing and for maintaining the high level of the healthcare system is still a challenge. The use of naturally sourced polymers as binders to deliver nanoparticles to sites of injury has been highly suggested. To this end, chitosan (CS) was embedded with different nanoparticles and examined for its potential usage in wound dressing. In detail, chitosan (CS)-containing zinc sulfide (ZnS)/zirconium dioxide (ZrO2)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite films were successfully fabricated with the aim of achieving promising biological behavior in the wound healing process. Morphological examination by SEM showed the formation of porous films with a good scattering of ZnS and ZrO2 nanograins, especially amongst ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS film. In addition, ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS displayed the lowest contact angle of 67.1 ± 0.9°. Optically, the absorption edge records 2.35 eV for pure chitosan, while it declines to 1.8:1.9 scope with the addition of ZnS, ZrO2, and GO. Normal lung cell (WI-38) proliferation inspection demonstrated that the usage of 2.4 µg/mL ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS led to a cell viability % of 142.79%, while the usage of 5000 µg/ mL led to a viability of 113.82%. However, the fibroblast malignant cell line exposed to 2.4 µg/mL ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS showed a viability % of 92.81%, while this percentage showed a steep decline with the usage of 5000 µg/ mL and 2500 µg/mL, reaching 23.28% and 27.81%, respectively. Further biological assessment should be executed with a three-dimensional film scaffold by choosing surrounding media characteristics (normal/malignant) that enhance the selectivity potential. The fabricated scaffolds show promising selective performance, biologically. Full article

In this paper, the mineralogical composition, concentrations, distribution, and modes of occurrence of the trace elements in coal from the Anjialing coal seam 9 in the Pingshuo mining district, Ningwu coalfield, were studied using optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and sequential chemical extraction procedures (SCEPs). The identified minerals included mainly kaolinite, boehmite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and muscovite. Compared to other hard coal from around the world, the coal from seam 9 was enriched with lithium (Li); slightly enriched with gallium (Ga), hafnium (Hf), zirconium (Zr), and mercury (Hg); typically enriched with lead (Pb), and depleted in arsenic (As). The results of the SCEPs analysis showed that Li, Ga, Zr, and Hf were mainly associated with clay minerals. Arsenic mainly occurred in its silicate and sulfide forms in pyrite and Pb was mainly associated with aluminosilicate, sulfide, and carbonate minerals. Full article

Mesoporous zirconium-silicates have been prepared using two different methodologies, evaporation-induced self-assembly and solventless organometallic precursor dry impregnation of commercial SiO2. The samples were characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, N2 adsorption, TEM, DRS UV–vis and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The catalytic performance of the Zr-Si catalysts was assessed in the epoxidation of three representative alkenes, cyclohexene, cyclooctene and caryophyllene, as well as in the oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant, with special attention drawn to the structure/activity relationship and catalyst stability issues. The key factors which affect substrate conversion and epoxide selectivity have been defined. The catalysts with larger contents of oligomeric ZrO2 species revealed higher activity. The nature of alkene and, in particular, its molecular hindrance is crucial, since the adsorption of the epoxide product is the main factor leading to fast catalyst deactivation. In fact, bulky epoxides do not show this effect. After optimization, the oxidation of caryophyllene gave endocyclic monoepoxide with 77% selectivity at 87% alkene conversion. Methyl phenyl sulfoxide afforded 37% of sulfoxide and 63% of sulfone at 57% sulfide conversion. The nature of catalysis was truly heterogeneous and no Zr leaching was observed. Full article

Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides are attractive solar absorber materials for renewable energy applications. Herein, we present the first–principles screened hybrid density functional theory analyses of the structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of the two structure modifications of strontium zirconium sulfide (needle–like α–SrZrS3 and distorted β–SrZrS3 phases). Through the analysis of the predicted electronic structures, we show that both α– and β–SrZrS3 materials are direct band gaps absorbers, with calculated band gaps of 1.38, and 1.95 eV, respectively, in close agreement with estimates from diffuse–reflectance measurements. A strong light absorption in the visible region is predicted for the α– and β–SrZrS3, as reflected in their high optical absorbance (in the order of 105 cm−1), with the β–SrZrS3 phase showing stronger absorption than the α–SrZrS3 phase. We also report the first theoretical prediction of effective masses of photo-generated charge carriers in α– and β–SrZrS3 materials. Predicted small effective masses of holes and electrons at the valence, and conduction bands, respectively, point to high mobility (high conductivity) and low recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers in α– and β–SrZrS3 materials, which are necessary for efficient photovoltaic conversion. Ceria, zirconia, and mixed cerium-zirconium mesoporous oxides were synthesized and used as supports for sulfur and gold species. The materials were characterised using selected advanced techniques (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), elemental analysis, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, and desorption isotherms, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-vis), Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR-H2), Thermogravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis (TG-DTA)), which allowed for monitoring of the oxidation state of metals (cerium and gold) and the surface properties of the catalysts, in particular the concentration of the components on the surface and in the bulk of materials. The interactions between gold, sulfur, and metals from oxides were considered. The goal of this work was studied the changes in the chemical composition of materials and the oxidation states of cerium species after the modification of oxides with sulfur and gold species and the estimation of the influence of these changes on the surface properties. The chemical composition of surface affects the mobility of surface oxygen and the oxidation state of cerium, which can play the role of redox sites (e.g., Ce3+/Ce4+ species), and therefore it strongly influences the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide and then gold loading. Additionally, gold catalysts modified with sulfur species were tested in the reaction of glycerol oxidation in the liquid phase at basic conditions as the test reaction of the catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants from water.
