Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major global health concern influenced by sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. This study compared T2D risk scores between commerce and industry sectors and assessed the associations of age, sex, education, physical activity, diet, and smoking with elevated risk. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 56,856 men and 12,872 women employed in the commerce (n = 27,448) and industry (n = 42,280) sectors across Spain. Anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical data were collected. Four validated T2D risk scores (QDscore, Finrisk, Canrisk, and TRAQ-D) were calculated. Multinomial logistic regression models estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for high-risk categories by sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. Results: Women in the industrial sector had significantly higher age, BMI, waist circumference, and lipid levels than those in commerce; differences among men were less marked. Across all participants, higher T2D risk scores were independently associated with physical inactivity (OR up to 12.49), poor Mediterranean diet adherence (OR up to 6.62), industrial employment (OR up to 1.98), and older age. Male sex was strongly associated with high Canrisk scores (OR = 6.31; 95% CI: 5.12–7.51). Conclusions: Employment in the industrial sector, combined with sedentary behavior and poor dietary habits, is independently associated with higher predicted T2D risk. Workplace prevention strategies should prioritize multicomponent interventions targeting modifiable risk factors, especially in high-risk subgroups such as older, less-educated, and inactive workers. Digital transformation has reshaped knowledge creation patterns, business models, and practices within the legal industry. However, many organizations have struggled to realize the anticipated benefits of digital transformation due to individual adaptation barriers. Drawing on the Job Demands–Resources model, this study employs both regression analysis and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the mechanisms and the boundary conditions through which digital transformation job autonomy affects lawyers’ supportive behaviors toward digital change in law firms. The regression analysis of multi-wave survey data from 423 lawyers demonstrates that digital transformation job autonomy not only has a direct positive effect on lawyers’ digital transformation-supportive behaviors, but also indirectly promotes such behaviors through lawyers’ cognitive adjustment in the workplace. Furthermore, leader empathy enhances the relationship between digital transformation job autonomy and supportive behaviors. The fsQCA results identify multiple pathways leading to high and low levels of digital transformation-supportive behaviors among lawyers. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how organizations foster individual support for digital transformation. Full article

Νurses often experience abusive behavior, such as gaslighting, which has a negative impact on their mental health and leads them to quit their jobs. Background/Objectives: We evaluate the impact of workplace gaslighting on nurses’ job burnout and turnover intention. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 410 nurses in Greece. We used the Gaslighting at Work Scale (GWS) to measure levels of workplace gaslighting in our sample. Also, we used the single-item burnout measure to measure job burnout and a six-point Likert scale to measure turnover intention. We constructed multivariable regression models to estimate the independent effect of workplace gaslighting on job burnout and turnover intention. Results: We found positive correlations between GWS and job burnout (r = 0.298, p-value < 0.01) and turnover intention (r = 0.385, p-value < 0.01). We found that workplace gaslighting was associated with job burnout in our sample. Our multivariable linear regression model identified a positive association between the score on the GWS (adjusted b = 0.653, 95% CI = 0.436 to 0.869, p < 0.001) and burnout. Similarly, we found that a higher score on the GWS was associated with a higher turnover intention (adjusted b = 0.616, 95% CI = 0.466 to 0.765, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study findings indicate that nurses encounter gaslighting behaviors that adversely impact their job burnout and turnover intentions. Healthcare institutions are urged to implement policies that raise awareness about this conduct, facilitate avenues for staff to report it, and exhibit zero tolerance for abusive behaviors, including gaslighting. Returning to work after extended holidays poses significant challenges to employees’ psychological adjustment, yet this phenomenon remains underexplored in organizational research. Drawing on the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study develops and tests a moderated mediation model to examine how pre-holiday work-related irritation influences post-holiday workplace vigor through heightened need for recovery, and how perceived organizational support buffers this process. Data were collected through a four-wave time-lagged design surrounding the Chinese Spring Festival, with a final sample of 349 employees across diverse industries. Results show that pre-holiday emotional strain increases employees’ recovery needs, which in turn undermines their workplace vigor. Moreover, boundary strength at home and perceived organizational support buffer the indirect negative pathway, highlighting the critical roles of both personal and organizational resources in the recovery process. By shifting attention from burnout to positive energy states such as vigor, this study advances theoretical understanding of post-holiday adjustment dynamics and offers practical insights for organizations seeking to foster employee resilience and sustained engagement after structured breaks. Background/Objective: Shift work has been increasingly associated with adverse metabolic outcomes, including insulin resistance (IR), a key contributor to cardiometabolic diseases. However, few large-scale studies have explored the association between shift work and validated IR indices across sociodemographic and lifestyle variables, stratified by sex. To investigate the relationship between shift work and four surrogate markers of insulin resistance—TyG índex, TyG-BMI, METS-IR (Metabolic score for insulin resistance), and SPISE-IR (Single-Point insulin Sensitivity estimator)—in a large Spanish working population and to assess how sociodemographic and behavioral factors modify these associations. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 53,053 employed adults (31,753 men and 21,300 women) across various regions and labor sectors in Spain. Participants were classified as shift or non-shift workers based on their work schedules. Data were collected during routine occupational health assessments and included anthropometric, clinical, biochemical, and behavioral variables. IR indices were calculated using standard formulas. Statistical analyses included t-tests, chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression, with stratification by sex. Results: Shift workers exhibited significantly higher levels of TyG, TyG-BMI, and METS-IR, and lower SPISE values compared to non-shift workers (all p < 0.001). These differences persisted after stratification by sex, age, education, and lifestyle factors. Logistic regression analyses confirmed that shift work independently predicted high IR risk across all indices, with adjusted ORs ranging from 1.49 to 1.89. Physical inactivity, low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and alcohol consumption were the strongest modifiable predictors. Men exhibited a higher burden of IR than women across all indices. Conclusions: Shift work is independently associated with elevated insulin resistance in both men and women. These findings emphasize the importance of workplace health interventions targeting physical activity, diet, and substance use, particularly in populations engaged in non-standard work schedules. The increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles poses significant global health challenges, including obesity, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and cardiovascular issues. This paper presents the design and development of a universal smart chair system aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of prolonged sitting. The proposed solution integrates a pressure sensor, vibration motors, an LED strip, and Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) communication into a modular and adaptable design. Powered by an STM32WB55CGU6 microcontroller and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system, the smart chair monitors sitting duration and the user’s posture, and provides alerts through tactile, visual, and auditory notifications. A complementary mobile application allows users to customize sitting time thresholds, monitor activity, and assess battery status. Designed for universal compatibility, the system can be adapted to various chair types. Technical and functional testing demonstrated reliable performance, with the chair operating for over eight workdays on a single charge. The smart chair offers an innovative, cost-effective approach to improving workplace ergonomics and health outcomes, with potential for further enhancements such as posture monitoring. A pilot study with 83 students at VILNIUS TECH showed that the smart chair detected correct posture with 94.78% accuracy, and 97.59% of users responded to alerts by adjusting their posture within an average of 3.27 s. Background/Objectives: All countries face a shortage of qualified nurses. Based on the social cognitive career theory (SCCT), it is assumed that individual and environmental aspects are interlinked and determinants in career choice and vocational behaviors. This study aims to determine if nursing students differ in their perceptions of nursing as a career. Furthermore, this study wants to determine if the students in a cluster differed in their outcome expectations, job satisfaction, and informal workplace learning. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods design consisting of two phases: the first involving a pre-study with experts (N = 10) and the second comprising a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The goal of the pre-study was to find relevant characteristics of the nursing profession. In a cross-sectional study with an online questionnaire, 230 nursing students (N = 230) participated. An inclusion criterion was that participants were enrolled in vocational training to become a nurse. In the questionnaire validated scales were used to ask participants about the characteristics of the nursing profession, their perceptions of nursing as a career, outcome expectations, informal workplace learning, and job satisfaction. Analysis: Data analysis included descriptive statistics (e.g., percentage distributions), hierarchical cluster analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The LCA results based on Schwarz’s BIC showed a two-cluster solution (Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) 251.984, Bayesian information criterion (BIC) 265.296, and adjusted Bayesian information criterion (aBIC) 252.622). The results of the ANOVA showed significant differences regarding outcome expectations (F = 22.738; <0.001), the perception of nursing as a career (F = 36.231; <0.001), and the engagement in informal workplace learning activities (F = 20.62; <0.001). For job satisfaction, no significant differences were found. Conclusions: Nursing vocational education and training is a vital socialization process in which supervisors can arrange a positive learning climate. Full article

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates advanced energy management strategies to alleviate range anxiety and improve overall energy efficiency. This study presents a novel framework for optimizing energy consumption in EVs by integrating driver behavior patterns, road conditions, and environmental factors. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset of 3395 high-resolution charging sessions from 85 EV drivers across 25 workplace locations, we developed a multi-modal prediction model that captures the complex interactions between driving behavior and environmental conditions. The proposed methodology employs a combination of driving scenario recognition and reinforcement learning techniques to optimize energy usage. Specifically, we utilize contrastive learning to extract meaningful representations of driving states by leveraging the symmetric relationships between positive pairs and the asymmetric nature of negative pairs and implement graph attention networks to model the intricate relationships between road environments and driving behaviors. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves a significant reduction in energy consumption compared to baseline methods, with an average improvement of 17.3% in energy efficiency under various driving conditions. Furthermore, we introduce an adaptive real-time optimization strategy that dynamically adjusts vehicle parameters based on instantaneous driving patterns and environmental contexts. This research contributes to the advancement of intelligent energy management systems for EVs and provides insights into the development of more efficient and environmentally sustainable transportation solutions. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health challenges across occupational sectors, disproportionately affecting workers in essential and public-facing roles. Objectives: This study ai to identify the occupational sectors in Spain most affected by mental health-related Temporary Work Incapacity due to Common Contingencies during the first COVID-19 lookdown (14 March–21 June 2020) to examine sex-based differences and to analyze the associate economic burden. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using data from salaried workers affiliated with Asepeyo, a major Social Security mutual insurance provider in Spain. The sample comprised 5135 workers granted Temporary Work Incapacity due to mental health diagnoses during the lockdown period. Variables analyzed included sex, age, ICD-10 diagnosis, occupational sector, duration of medically certified leave, and estimated direct economic cost. A focused subsample of 2123 workers from the ten most affected sectors was also examined. Results: Generalized Anxiety Disorder was the most prevalent diagnosis (69.17%), followed by adjustment disorders and depressive episodes. Women accounted for 63.5% of the total sample and 80.6% of the most affected sectors, which included elderly care, retail, education, cleaning, and healthcare. The average cost per episode was EUR 2465.7, with longer leave durations observed in sectors characterized by high emotional and social exposure. Conclusions: Mental health-related disorders during the COVID-19 lockdown revealed marked sex-based disparities and sectoral vulnerabilities. Public-facing and care-related occupations experienced a disproportionate burden. These findings support the need to recognize certain mental health conditions as occupational diseases to develop targeted, gender-informed workplace mental health strategies. Full article

The organizational culture significantly impacts employee behavior, satisfaction, and retention. Historically associated with hierarchical, fire-service-based structures, EMS cultures vary considerably, and their influence remains unclear. We aimed to identify organizational cultures within EMS agencies and examine their association with clinicians’ intent to leave within 12 months. We performed a cross-sectional survey of nationally certified civilian EMS clinicians aged 18–85 in the United States who recertified with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians between October 2022 and April 2023. Respondents completed the validated Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI), categorizing organizational cultures into adhocracy, clan, hierarchy, market, or mixed. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated the organizational culture and clinicians’ intention to leave, adjusting for personal demographics, workplace characteristics, and job satisfaction. In total, 30,762 survey respondents were included. Mixed and hierarchy cultures predominated, followed by clan, market, and adhocracy. Clinicians in adhocracy and hierarchy cultures had significantly higher adjusted odds of intending to leave EMS compared to clan and mixed. The organizational culture in EMS significantly influences clinicians’ intentions to leave. Adhocracy, hierarchy, and market cultures are associated with an increased likelihood of turnover, but clan-oriented environments do not increase risks. These findings suggest that optimizing EMS agency cultures towards collaboration and supportive environments may enhance clinician retention. Full article

In a highly competitive and high-pressure workplace environment, more and more employees may fall into negative work situations such as work disengagement. The actual effectiveness of avoidant job crafting as a proactive behavior of employees in coping with stress remains controversial, and the positive aspects of its impact are not explored. Based on conservation of resources theory, this study argues that avoidant job crafting mitigates employees’ self-control resource depletion, which in turn effectively helps employees to reduce work disengagement; the above process is moderated by career identity. To test the above hypotheses, this study collects 455 cross-sectional data from Internet companies in various regions of China and uses structural equation modeling to conduct an analysis. The results show the following: avoidant job crafting has a significant negative effect on work disengagement; self-control resource depletion partially mediates the effect of avoidant job crafting on work disengagement; and the negative relationship between avoidant job crafting and self-control resource depletion is stronger when employees’ career identity is higher and vice versa when it is weaker. The above results guide managers to help employees adjust avoidant job crafting correctly and escape negative work situations. Full article

Background: Among the leading causes of work-related disability, musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) profoundly affect productivity and quality of life. Workplace changes, equipment adjustments, and training courses, among other ergonomic interventions, seek to lower the frequency and degree of MSDs. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether ergonomic interventions help prevent and control MSDs in various workplace environments. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated ergonomic interventions against conventional conditions. Effect sizes were computed using mean differences and pooled using a random-effects model in case of heterogeneity. A uniform Excel sheet was used for data extraction. Revman software (Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used for statistical analysis. Results: This meta-analysis included 24 RCTs with 4086 workers with different occupations. A meta-analysis of 10 included studies demonstrated lower pain intensity with a mean difference in VAS score between ergonomic interventions and the control group of −0.28 (95%CI: −0.43, −0.14, p = 0.0001). Also, there was a significant reduction in reported MSD-related pain in the lower back with ergonomic interventions with an OR 0.53 (95%CI: 0.40–0.70, p < 0.00001). Moreover, there were statistically significant results for ergonomic interventions in the upper back, ankles, wrists, and neck. In contrast, there were no significant improvements in the thighs, arms, knees, shoulders, and elbows. Conclusions: Our findings support implementing ergonomic strategies as a practical approach to reducing work-related MSDs. However, further research is needed to improve intervention design and long-term effectiveness. Full article

Background: Person-centered care (PCC) approaches are widely recognized for improving the quality of life of residents living with dementia in long-term care (LTC). However, residents are only one part of the care dyad, and it remains unclear whether PCC also impacts nursing care aides in similarly adventitious ways. Care aides in this context experience significant care strain, which refers to the physical, emotional, and psychological burden experienced by caregivers. While PCC approaches are promoted as the best approach for supporting residents living with dementia, there is limited research on whether their implementation also impacts care aides. This study examined potential associations between organization-level PCC indicators and care strain among nursing care aides who work with residents living with dementia in LTC homes in New Brunswick, Canada. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used to explore the relationship between PCC approaches and care strain. Care strain was measured using the strain in dementia care scale, including the daily emotions subscale. A modified version of the Dementia Policy Questionnaire assessed the extent to which PCC approaches were implemented in participants’ workplaces. Descriptive statistics characterized the sample, and multivariable regression analyses examined associations between PCC indicators and care strain, adjusting for demographic factors. Results: Twenty-eight participants completed both measures. Overall, participants reported high levels of care strain but also high levels of positive daily emotions. Findings partially supported the hypothesis that PCC indicators were associated with lower care strain and more positive daily emotions. Certain PCC indicators, such as structured education and ethical support, appeared particularly beneficial. Implications for Practice: Strengthening PCC practices—especially through hands-on training and ethical support—may help reduce care strain and enhance care aides’ emotional well-being. LTC facilities that prioritize these strategies over policy implementation alone may improve both staff well-being and quality of care for residents. Full article

Social sustainability that starts from the workplace is a relevant factor for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Based on this need, this study analyzes the role of virtuous leadership as facilitator of health and inclusive work environments that integrate followers’ psychological well-being and their attitudes towards people with disabilities. An exploratory design was used with latent variables to assess the proposed virtue-based ethical leadership adjustment model for social sustainability, which presented efficient absolute, comparative, and parsimonious adjustments for its operationalization. In conclusion, virtuous leadership plays a relevant role in the development of followers’ psychological well-being, and attitudes towards people with disabilities in the workplace, contributing to the social sustainability criteria from the work environment. Engineers’ work impacts society and the environment and plays a central role in delivering on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. However, developing sustainability skills in engineering programs competes with a dense technical curriculum and has proven challenging. The mainstream adoption of generative AI (GAI) tools has prompted a review of teaching and learning, with expanding possibilities as new use cases emerge. This study reviews the impact that GAI is having on engineering education and proposes a framework for the use of GAI to facilitate greater socio-enviro-technical integration in the engineering curriculum. Based on a scoping review of the literature and a conceptual analysis, this paper provides a forward-looking perspective. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also transforming the practice of engineering, triggering the need to adjust graduate attributes accordingly. The increased productivity expected with the rise of AI in the workplace can scale-up the impact of engineering developments and underscores the need for graduates’ sustainability skills. Furthermore, engineers have a prominent role in the development of AI systems. Therefore, in advocating for the need to enhance graduate’s sustainability skills, we emphasize understanding its limitations and the sustainability of AI systems to address the paradox of AI for sustainability and the sustainability of AI itself.
