Household Water Insecurity in the Western Amazon, Amazonas, Brazil: A Preliminary Approach

The objective was to evaluate the quality of an instrument to measure the experience of household water insecurity (WI) and the factors associated with the prevalence of WI in an urban area in a municipality in the Western Brazilian Amazon. A cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted to investigate 983 urban households. The Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) scale was used to measure the psychometric properties of reliability and validity. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted, and the prevalence ratio (PR, 95% CI) was calculated, considering WI as the dependent variable and the other household variables as independent variables. WI affected 46.2% (95% CI: 43.0–49.4%) of the households, independently associated with: head of the family as parent/other and presence of a child in the household. The instrument exhibited unidimensionality in the factor analyses and was considered to be both reliable and valid, as indicated by a Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.958. Household WI is a serious public health problem in the Amazon in correlation with both social vulnerability and a lack of public services. As a preliminary approach, the scale proved to be valid and reliable. However, considering the Amazonian context, misunderstandings about some issues by respondents were identified, and further validation studies are needed to improve the intelligibility of these questions. Since the end of the Civil War, Cambodia has pursued economic development to enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, where land is a critical resource. Previous studies have indicated that the country has changed land use and land cover. However, they have not explained how these changes can improve the livelihoods of local communities, thereby mitigating their negative impacts through an asset-based approach. Battambang Province, in the northwestern region, was the battleground until political integration in 1996. Since then, the province has been home to immigrants exploring the lands for livelihood. Thus, this study aims to examine agricultural livelihoods in the villages of Dei Kraham and Ou Toek Thla, located west of Battambang Town. These were selected because of their common characteristics. Adopting a quantitative approach and a sustainable livelihood framework, this study employed stratified random sampling to select 123 families for interviews across three population subgroups: old settlers, new settlers, and young settlers. In situ information was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis tests to assess the livelihood assets underlying the physical, natural, human, financial, and social capital. The statistical analysis results reveal no significant differences (p-value = 0.079) in livelihood assets between the strata at the village level. Meanwhile, significant differences were observed in physical, human, and financial capital between old and young settlers when examining the subgroups (p-value 0.000). The extent of the land resources held by old settlers was associated with household income and livelihoods related to agriculture. Based on livelihood asset scores, nearly half of the new settlers (0.49–0.5) and a quarter of the young settlers (0.47) are vulnerable groups requiring support. The youth will soon face an uncertain future if they do not prioritize education. Full article

A systems-oriented review of machine learning (ML) over the entire flood management spectrum, encompassing fluvial flood control, pluvial flood management, and resiliency-risk characterization was undertaken. Deep learners like long short-term memory (LSTM) networks perform well in predicting reservoir inflows and outflows. Convolution neural networks (CNNs) and other object identification algorithms are being explored in assessing levee and flood wall failures. The use of ML methods in pump station operations is limited due to lack of public-domain datasets. Reinforcement learning (RL) has shown promise in controlling low-impact development (LID) systems for pluvial flood management. Resiliency is defined in terms of the vulnerability of a community to floods. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) and unsupervised ML methods are used to capture vulnerability. Supervised learning is used to model flooding hazards. Conventional approaches perform better than deep learners and ensemble methods for modeling flood hazards due to paucity of data and large inter-model predictive variability. Advances in satellite-based, drone-facilitated data collection and Internet of Things (IoT)-based low-cost sensors offer new research avenues to explore. Transfer learning at ungauged basins holds promise but is largely unexplored. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is seeing increased use and helps the transition of ML models from black-box forecasters to knowledge-enhancing predictors. Full article

Neuronal proteins synthesized locally in axons and dendrites contribute to growth, plasticity, survival, and retrograde signaling underlying these cellular processes. Advances in molecular tools to profile localized mRNAs, along with single-molecule detection approaches for RNAs and proteins, have significantly expanded our understanding of the diverse proteins produced in subcellular compartments. These investigations have also uncovered key molecular mechanisms that regulate mRNA transport, storage, stability, and translation within neurons. The long distances that axons extend render their processes vulnerable, especially when injury necessitates regeneration to restore connectivity. Localized mRNA translation in axons helps initiate and sustain axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system and promotes axon growth in the central nervous system. Recent and ongoing studies suggest that axonal RNA transport, storage, and stability mechanisms represent promising targets for enhancing regenerative capacity. Here, we summarize critical post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, emphasizing translation in the axonal compartment and highlighting potential strategies for the development of new regeneration-promoting therapeutics. Pesticide Residues in Fruits and Vegetables from Cape Verde: A Multi-Year Monitoring and Dietary Risk Assessment Study

Food safety concerns related to pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables have increased globally, particularly in regions where monitoring programs are scarce or inconsistent. This study provides the first multi-year evaluation of pesticide contamination and associated dietary risks in Cape Verde, an African island nation increasingly reliant on imported produce. A total of 570 samples of fruits and vegetables—both locally produced and imported—were collected from major markets across the country between 2017 and 2020 and analyzed using validated multiresidue methods based on gas chromatography coupled to Ion Trap mass spectrometry (GC-IT-MS/MS), and both gas and liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-QqQ-MS/MS and LC-QqQ-MS/MS). Residues were detected in 63.9% of fruits and 13.2% of vegetables, with imported fruits showing the highest contamination levels and diversity of compounds. Although only one sample exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by the European Union, 80 different active substances were quantified—many of them not authorized under the current EU pesticide residue legislation. Dietary exposure was estimated using median residue levels and real consumption data from the national nutrition survey (ENCAVE 2019), enabling a refined risk assessment based on actual consumption patterns. The cumulative hazard index for the adult population was 0.416, below the toxicological threshold of concern. However, when adjusted for children aged 6–11 years—taking into account body weight and relative consumption—the cumulative index approached 1.0, suggesting a potential health risk for this vulnerable group. A limited number of compounds, including omethoate, oxamyl, imazalil, and dithiocarbamates, accounted for most of the risk. Many are banned or heavily restricted in the EU, highlighting regulatory asymmetries in global food trade. These findings underscore the urgent need for strengthened residue monitoring in Cape Verde, particularly for imported products, and support the adoption of risk-based food safety policies that consider population-specific vulnerabilities and mixture effects. The methodological framework used here can serve as a model for other low-resource countries seeking to integrate analytical data with dietary exposure in a One Health context. Full article

In the last two decades, the prevalence of South Asian migrant workers has significantly increased in the UAE’s construction sector, and they are under huge debt. Although researchers heavily stress the role of employers in migrant workers’ debt, the role of debt before departure has not been investigated. Thus, this study bridges this gap in the literature in the context of South Asian construction migrant workers. The objective of this study is to investigate how informal recruitment fees and debt arrangements contribute to bonded labor and dependency among migrant workers. A qualitative approach was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 30 South Asian migrants employed in the construction sector. This article highlights how pre-migration debt—which is often accrued through informal loans and exploitative recruitment fees—has been underexplored in migration studies. Drawing on interviews with 30 South Asian laborers, this study identifies five interconnected themes: pre-migration debt bondage, exploitative lending practices, lack of legal recourse, emotional manipulation, and a cycle of dependency. While UAE labor policies have improved, the real vulnerabilities lie in the informal recruitment systems and weak oversight in migrant workers’ countries of origin. Consequently, five themes were generated from the analysis: pre-migration debt bondage, exploitative lending practices, no legal recourse, emotional manipulation, and cycles of dependency. This study contributes to our existing knowledge by revealing the experiences of migrant construction workers from South Asia in the UAE. While the UAE has established one of the region’s most progressive legal frameworks to protect migrant workers and set clear labor standards, many exploitative practices occur outside its jurisdiction, particularly in the workers’ countries of origin. This study underscores that the root of the problem lies in weak enforcement and informal recruitment networks in sending countries, not in UAE policy itself. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated international action to ensure that migrant protection begins well before arrival. Full article

The Multifaceted Role of p53 in Cancer Molecular Biology: Insights for Precision Diagnosis and Therapeutic Breakthroughs

The protein p53, often referred to as the “guardian of the genome,” is essential for preserving cellular balance and preventing cancerous transformations. As one of the most commonly altered genes in human cancers, its impaired function is associated with tumor initiation, development, and resistance to treatment. Exploring the diverse roles of p53, which include regulating the cell cycle, repairing DNA, inducing apoptosis, reprogramming metabolism, and modulating immunity, provides valuable insights into cancer mechanisms and potential treatments. This review integrates recent findings on p53′s dual nature, functioning as both a tumor suppressor and an oncogenic promoter, depending on the context. Wild-type p53 suppresses tumors by inducing cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to genotoxic stress, while mutated variants often lose these functions or gain novel pro-oncogenic activities. Emerging evidence highlights p53′s involvement in non-canonical pathways, such as regulating tumor microenvironment interactions, metabolic flexibility, and immune evasion mechanisms. For instance, p53 modulates immune checkpoint expression and influences the efficacy of immunotherapies, including PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Furthermore, advancements in precision diagnostics, such as liquid biopsy-based detection of p53 mutations and AI-driven bioinformatics tools, enable early cancer identification and stratification of patients likely to benefit from targeted therapies. Therapeutic strategies targeting p53 pathways are rapidly evolving. Small molecules restoring wild-type p53 activity or disrupting mutant p53 interactions, such as APR-246 and MDM2 inhibitors, show promise in clinical trials. Combination approaches integrating gene editing with synthetic lethal strategies aim to exploit p53-dependent vulnerabilities. Additionally, leveraging p53′s immunomodulatory effects through vaccine development or adjuvants may enhance immunotherapy responses. In conclusion, deciphering p53′s complex biology underscores its unparalleled potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target. Integrating multi-omics analyses, functional genomic screens, and real-world clinical data will accelerate the translation of p53-focused research into precision oncology breakthroughs, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Canine morbillivirus (CDV), the cause of canine distemper, is a pathogen affecting many hosts. While modified live virus (MLV) vaccines are crucial for controlling the disease in dogs, cases of vaccine-related infections have been found in both domestic and wild animals. Specifically, the America-1 and Rockborn-like vaccine genotypes are concerning due to their spread and ability to transmit between different species. This study conducted a review and analysis of molecular detections of these strains in various carnivores (domestic, captive, synanthropic, and wild species). This study used a conceptual model considering host ecology and the domestic–wild interface to evaluate plausible transmission connections over time using Linear Directional Mean (LDM) and Weighted Mean Centre (WMC) methods. Statistical analyses examined the relationship between how likely a strain is to spread and factors like host type and vaccination status. The findings showed that the America-1 genotype spread in a more organised way, with domestic dogs being the main source and recipient, bridging different environments. Synanthropic mesocarnivores also played this same role, with less intensity. America-1 was most concentrated in the North Atlantic and Western Europe. In contrast, the Rockborn-like strain showed a more unpredictable and restricted spread, residual circulation from past use rather than ongoing spread. Species involved in vaccine-related infections often share characteristics like generalist behaviour, social living, and a preference for areas where domestic animals and wildlife interact. We did not find a general link between a host vaccination status and the likelihood of the strain spreading. The study emphasised the ongoing risk of vaccine-derived strains moving from domestic and synanthropic animals to vulnerable wild species, supporting the need for improved vaccination approaches. Mapping these plausible transmission routes can serve as a basis for targeted surveillance, not only of vaccine-derived strains, but of any other circulating genotype. Full article

Cybersecurity threats increasingly originate from human actions within organizations, emphasizing the need to understand behavioral factors behind non-compliance with information security policies (ISPs). Despite the presence of formal security policies, insider threats—whether accidental or intentional—remain a major vulnerability. This study addresses the gap in behavioral cybersecurity research by developing an integrated conceptual model that draws upon Operant Conditioning Theory (OCT), Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explore ISP compliance. The research aims to identify key cognitive, motivational, and behavioral factors that shape employees’ intentions and actual compliance with ISPs. The model examines seven independent variables of perceived severity: perceived vulnerability, rewards, punishment, attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, with intention serving as a mediating variable and actual ISP compliance as the outcome. A quantitative approach was used, collecting data via an online survey from 302 employees across the public and private sectors. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS software (v.4.1.1.2) analyzed the complex relationships among variables, testing the proposed model. The findings reveal that perceived severity, punishment, attitude toward behavior, and perceived behavioral control, significantly and positively, influence employees’ intentions to comply with information security policies. Conversely, perceived vulnerability, rewards, and subjective norms do not show a significant effect on compliance intentions. Moreover, the intention to comply strongly predicts actual compliance behavior, thus confirming its key role as a mediator linking cognitive, motivational, and behavioral factors to real security practices. This study offers an original contribution by uniting three well-established theories into a single explanatory model and provides actionable insights for designing effective, psychologically informed interventions to enhance ISP adherence and reduce insider risks. Directed grey-box fuzzers focus on testing specific target code. They have been utilized in various security applications, such as reproducing known crashes and identifying vulnerabilities resulting from incomplete patches. Distance-guided directed fuzzers calculate the distance to the target node for each node in a CFG or CG, which has always been the mainstream in this field. However, the distance can only reflect the relationship between the current node and the target node, and it does not consider the impact of the reaching sequence before the target node. To mitigate this problem, we analyzed the properties of the instrumented function’s call graph after selective instrumentation, and the complexity of reaching the target function sequence was estimated. Assisted by the sequence complexity, we proposed a two-stage function call sequence-based seed-scheduling strategy. The first stage is to select seeds with a higher probability of generating test cases that reach the target function. The second stage is to select seeds that can generate test cases that meet the conditions for triggering the vulnerability as much as possible. We implemented our approach in SEZZ based on SelectFuzz and compare it with related works. We found that SEZZ outperformed AFLGo, Beacon, WindRanger, and SelectFuzz by achieving an average improvement of 13.7×, 1.50×, 9.78×, and 2.04× faster on vulnerability exposure, respectively. Moreover, SEZZ triggered three more vulnerabilities than the other compared tools. Full article

Weathering steel (WS) is widely used in bridge construction due to its high corrosion resistance, durability, and low maintenance requirements. This paper reviews the performance of WS bridges in Canadian climates, focusing on the formation of protective patina, influencing factors, and long-term maintenance strategies. The protective patina, composed of stable iron oxyhydroxides, develops over time under favorable wet–dry cycles but can be disrupted by environmental aggressors such as chlorides, sulfur dioxide, and prolonged moisture exposure. Key alloying elements like Cu, Cr, Ni, and Nb enhance corrosion resistance, while design considerations—such as drainage optimization and avoidance of crevices—are critical for performance. The study highlights the vulnerability of WS bridges to microenvironments, including de-icing salt exposure, coastal humidity, and debris accumulation. Regular inspections and maintenance, such as debris removal, drainage system upkeep, and targeted cleaning, are essential to mitigate corrosion risks. Climate change exacerbates challenges, with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and ocean acidification accelerating corrosion in coastal regions. Future research directions include optimizing WS compositions with advanced alloys (e.g., rare earth elements) and integrating climate-resilient design practices. This review highlights the need for a holistic approach combining material science, proactive maintenance, and adaptive design to ensure the longevity of WS bridges in evolving environmental conditions. Accurate short-term weather forecasting plays a vital role in disaster response, agriculture, and energy management, where timely and reliable predictions are essential for decision-making. Graph neural networks (GNNs), known for their ability to model complex spatial structures and relational data, have achieved remarkable success in meteorological forecasting by effectively capturing spatial dependencies among distributed weather stations. However, most existing GNN-based approaches rely on pairwise station connections, limiting their capacity to represent higher-order spatial interactions. Moreover, their dependence on supervised learning makes them vulnerable to spatial heterogeneity and temporal non-stationarity. This paper introduces a novel spatial–temporal pretraining framework, Hypergraph-enhanced Meteorological Pretraining (HyMePre), which combines hypergraph neural networks with self-supervised learning to model high-order spatial dependencies and improve generalization across diverse climate regimes. HyMePre employs a two-stage masking strategy, applying spatial and temporal masking separately, to learn disentangled representations from unlabeled meteorological time series. During forecasting, dynamic hypergraphs group stations based on meteorological similarity, explicitly capturing high-order dependencies. Extensive experiments on large-scale reanalysis datasets show that HyMePre outperforms conventional GNN models in predicting temperature, humidity, and wind speed. The integration of pretraining and hypergraph modeling enhances robustness to noisy data and improves generalization to unseen climate patterns, offering a scalable and effective solution for operational weather forecasting. Economically, all countries seek sustained growth driven by domestic demand, investment, and exports; however, COVID-19 revealed the vulnerability of interconnected economic systems and a sharp contraction in global trade. The objective of this research is to analyze through an econometric model the effect of traditional exports on Peru’s economic growth during the 2012–2023 period. The study employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, longitudinal design, using quarterly data from the Central Reserve Bank of Peru and the National Bureau of Statistics of China, which were transformed into natural logarithms. Unit root tests, the ordinary least squares (OLS) method and a two-stage least squares (2SLS) model were applied to correct for endogeneity. The results show that mining accounts for 81.7% of total traditional exports from Peru. The model indicated that a 1% increase in traditional exports leads to a 0.29% increase in GDP, confirming a positive impact. However, the high dependence of the mining sector exposes the economy to external risks. Therefore, a productive diversification strategy, alongside the modernization of the mining sector, is recommended to strengthen Peru’s economic resilience in the face of global crises and external fluctuations. This study investigates the fire dynamics and structural response of steel-framed warehouse racking systems under various fire scenarios, emphasizing the critical importance of fire safety measures in mitigating structural damage. Through advanced computational simulations (Fire Dynamics Simulator) and thermomechanical analysis, this research reveals that fire intensity and progression are highly influenced by the ignition point and the stored material types, with maximum recorded temperatures reaching 720 °C and 970 °C in different scenarios. The results highlight the localization of significant strain and drift ratios in structural elements near the ignition zone, underscoring their vulnerability. This study demonstrates the rapid loss of load-bearing capacity in steel elements at elevated temperatures, leading to severe deformations and increased collapse risks. Key findings emphasize the necessity of strategically positioned sprinkler systems and the integration of passive fire protection measures, such as fire-resistant coatings, to enhance structural resilience. Performance-based fire design approaches, aligning with FEMA-356 criteria, offer realistic frameworks for improving the fire safety of warehouse structures. Full article

FDS-Based Study on Fire Spread and Control in Modern Brick-Timber Architectural Heritage: A Case Study of Faculty House at a University in Changsha

The modern Chinese architectural heritage combines sturdy Western materials with delicate Chinese styling, mainly adopting brick-timber structural systems that are highly vulnerable to fire damage. The study assesses the fire spread characteristics of the First Faculty House, a 20th-century architectural heritage located at a university in China. The assessment is carried out by analyzing building materials, structural configuration, and fire load. By using FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator (PyroSim version 2022)) and SketchUp software (version 2023) for architectural reconstruction and fire spread simulation, explores preventive measures to reduce fire risks. The result show that the total fire load of the building amounts to 1,976,246 MJ. After ignition, flashover occurs at 700 s, accompanied by a sharp increase in the heat release rate (HRR). The peak ceiling temperature reaches 750 °C. The roof trusses have critical structural weaknesses when approaching flashover conditions, indicating a high potential for collapse. Three targeted fire protection strategies are proposed in line with the heritage conservation principle of minimal visual and functional intervention: fire sprinkler systems, fire retardant coating, and fire barrier. Simulations of different strategies demonstrate their effectiveness in mitigating fire spread in elongated architectural heritages with enclosed ceiling-level ignition points. The efficacy hierarchy follows: fire sprinkler system > fire retardant coating > fire barrier. Additionally, because of chimney effect, for fire sources located above the ceiling and other hidden locations need to be warned in a timely manner to prevent the thermal plume from invading other sides of the ceiling through the access hole. This research can serve as a reference framework for other Modern Chinese Architectural Heritage to develop appropriate fire mitigation strategies and to provide a methodology for sustainable development of the Chinese architectural heritage.
