From falcons spotting prey to humans recognizing faces, the ability to rapidly process visual information depends on a foveated retinal organization that provides high-acuity central vision while preserving low-resolution peripheral vision. This organization is conserved along early visual pathways, yet remains under-explored in machine learning. Here, we examine the impact of embedding a foveated retinotopic transformation as a preprocessing layer on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image classification. By applying a log-polar mapping to off-the-shelf models and retraining them, we achieve comparable accuracy while improving robustness to scale and rotation. We demonstrate that this architecture is highly sensitive to shifts in the fixation point and that this sensitivity provides an effective proxy for defining saliency maps that facilitate object localization. Our results demonstrate that foveated retinotopy encodes prior geometric knowledge, providing a solution for visual searches and a meaningful classification robustness and localization trade-off. These findings provides a proof of concept in order to connect principles of biological vision with artificial networks, suggesting new, robust and efficient approaches for computer vision systems. In complex driving environments, drivers must continuously detect and respond to critical visual information such as traffic signs and pedestrians. However, important targets may sometimes be overlooked due to high cognitive load during driving. Therefore, visual attention prompt methods have been proposed to guide drivers’ gaze toward relevant targets. A visual attention prompt method is a visual cue presented in a key area in a user’s field of view to draw his/her visual attention. This study evaluates the short-term performance of five visual attention prompt methods (Point, Arrow, Blur, Dusk, and ModAF) in a driving simulator and compares their performance between novice and proficient drivers. Eye-tracking data and multiple analyses are used to examine whether the influence of these methods could be maintained after they are disabled and to clarify drivers’ response patterns across methods in consideration with their driving proficiency. The results indicate that visual attention prompt methods could induce a short-term transfer effect, as drivers still tend to fixate on target traffic signs earlier after the methods are disabled, and the elapsed-time analysis estimates that this effect lasts about 84.35 s. Overall, the Point, Arrow, and Dusk methods show relatively stronger performance with significant reductions in the elapsed time to fixate on the traffic sign. The clustering analysis further shows that drivers’ response patterns are not uniform, with two clusters for novice drivers and three clusters for proficient drivers. The results suggest that most novice drivers tend to benefit from explicit non-directional visual cues that enhance target salience, such as the Point method, whereas proficient drivers are more likely to benefit from explicit directional visual cues that provide clear directional guidance, such as the Arrow method. These findings suggest that visual attention prompt methods may be useful for developing driver training strategies tailored to different levels of driving proficiency, helping drivers maintain more effective visual attention allocation during driving and potentially contributing to improved driving safety. Product visual strategies (PVS) on food packaging influence how consumers visually inspect products at the point of purchase. However, evidence comparing transparent windows and product images remains mixed, particularly regarding how these strategies interact with food unit size (FUS) and shape visual attention patterns. Moreover, few studies have examined these effects using objective eye-tracking measures within controlled experimental designs. This study employed a 2 × 2 between-subjects quasi-experiment to investigate the effects of PVS (transparent window and product image) and FUS (large unit and small unit) on visual attention and subsequent product-related evaluations. A total of 160 participants viewed realistic chocolate package stimuli that varied only in visual strategy and unit size. Eye movements were recorded using Tobii Pro Glasses 2. Visual attention was assessed through Time to First Fixation (TFF) and Fixation Duration (FD), while expected tastiness, expected quality, and purchase intention were measured using standardized self-report scales. The results showed that transparent-window packaging attracted visual attention more rapidly and sustained longer fixations than product-image packaging. These attention differences were accompanied by higher expected tastiness, expected quality, and purchase intention. While food unit size alone showed limited effects on eye-movement measures, a significant interaction was observed: small-unit designs elicited greater visual attention and more favorable evaluations only when the product was directly visible through a transparent window. Overall, the findings demonstrate how product visual strategies and food unit size jointly shape visual attention allocation during packaging inspection. By integrating eye-tracking measures with evaluation and behavioral intention outcomes, this study contributes to applied eye-movement research in food packaging contexts. Full article

This exploratory eye-tracking study investigates how the emotional content of food bank advertisements influences food donor perception and visual attention. It does so by addressing a gap in the literature on eye-tracking applications in food donation contexts and social neuroscience. Visual attention represents a fundamental behavioural precursor to decision-making, yet its role in charitable communications remains underexplored. The objective of this research was to investigate how the content of food bank advertisements is associated with the way that potential food donors perceive food bank posters on a cognitive level. This study adopted a social neuroscience approach, using the methodology of eye-tracking to examine the visual attention patterns that form while viewing food bank posters. Participants (N = 96) viewed four posters varying in their emotional appeal, i.e., positive, neutral, negative and cognitive dissonance, while their eye movements were being recorded. Results revealed the robust attentional prioritisation of generic pictorial content over specific organisational logos or abstract symbols across all metrics and posters with large effect sizes (r = 0.69–0.87). It was found that pictures captured participants’ attention three to seven times faster than logos and also received two to seven times more fixations. The poster carrying a negative appeal elicited the strongest pictorial advantage, consistent with the negativity bias in attention allocation. Exploratory analysis found no significant correlation between participants’ past charitable behaviour and visual attention patterns, thus suggesting that the Picture Superiority Effect operates universally, regardless of individual past charitable behaviours. This is the first eye-tracking study examining donor-facing food bank communications in Poland, contributing to social neuroscience approaches in prosocial behaviour research. Findings suggest charitable organisations should prioritise emotionally engaging pictures’ inclusion over logo prominence in their visual communications messaging. Full article

This study investigates how young children’s geometric reasoning develops through the act of drawing, examining how their eye movements, actions, and verbal explanations interact to reveal emerging structural awareness. Grounded in a developmental framework of structural reasoning, the study extends this model from static visual products to the dynamic processes involved in constructing geometric figures. Using an exploratory qualitative case study design, three children (ages 5.5–7.5) completed line, circle, and rectangle drawing tasks while their gaze and actions were recorded using mobile eye-tracking. Gaze data, video recordings, drawing product, and verbal responses were synchronized and analyzed frame by frame to examine gaze–action coordination. Analysis revealed a progression from partial structural awareness, where gaze remained embedded in action, to structural awareness, where gaze projected multiple steps ahead to coordinate global shape structure. Between these, an intermediate, process-oriented phase was identified, characterized by alternating gaze-in-activity and anticipatory fixations supporting local planning. These fine-grained gaze patterns reveal micro-level transitions in geometric reasoning that are not observable from final drawings alone. The study refines current models of geometric development by revealing how perceptual, representational, and embodied processes dynamically integrate during drawing, offering a more nuanced understanding of early structural reasoning and its implications for teaching geometry. In this pilot study, we investigate the psychological and attentional impact of biophilic urban interventions using an immersive virtual reality (VR) framework integrated with real-time eye-tracking. Specifically, it examines whether bio-esthetic enhancements can mitigate perceptual inequalities across neighborhoods of varying socioeconomic status (SES). Sixteen participants viewed original and digitally enhanced fixed-viewpoint 360° videos of Low-, Medium-, and High-SES environments while a comprehensive suite of oculomotor dynamics and psychometric responses were recorded. Results confirmed a significant Condition × SES interaction across both subjective preference (Liking) and esthetic evaluation (η2p = 0.41), suggesting a role for biophilic design as a “socio-perceptual equalizer”: while baseline ratings consistently favored High-SES areas, interventions in Low-SES contexts yielded the highest marginal gains, effectively bridging the gap with privileged environments. Eye-tracking metrics revealed that this convergence was associated with active visual engagement, with Enhanced Low-SES scenes eliciting the highest fixation counts and visual coverage. However, a critical dissociation emerged between immediate affective improvement and self-reported stress reduction. Elevated saccadic velocities in Enhanced Low-SES scenes are consistent with a state of “hard fascination” or novelty-induced arousal. This pattern implies that while biophilia elements boost positive affect, physiological restoration may be a dose-dependent process, requiring sufficient exposure duration to transition from curiosity-driven scanning to the “soft fascination” linked to stress recovery. These findings provide preliminary evidence for integrated XR analytics as a tool for evidence-based urban design and are discussed in the context of the equigenesis hypothesis. Full article

Virtual agents powered by large language models are increasingly deployed in digital mental health services, yet the influence of avatar appearance on users’ emotional, cognitive, and physiological responses remains insufficiently understood. This study was conducted between March and April 2024 and examined how three avatar designs—animal-like, human-like, and object-like—shape affective experience, user evaluation, autonomic activity, and attentional allocation during virtual doctor interactions. Forty-two participants completed a within-subjects experiment involving self-reported affect ratings, multidimensional user-experience assessments, heart rate variability (HRV) measures, and eye-tracking indicators. The avatar type did not yield statistically significant differences in changes in positive or negative affect across conditions. However, physiological data revealed clear divergences. The animal-like avatar elicited the strongest parasympathetic activation, reflected by significant increases in the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and high-frequency (HF) power, whereas the object-like avatar produced a sympathetic-dominant response. Across six user-experience dimensions, the animal-like avatar consistently received the highest evaluations. Eye-tracking results showed faster first fixation and a longer face-directed fixation duration for the animal-like avatar, indicating stronger social attention. The human-like avatar demonstrated slightly delayed initial fixation, consistent with subtle yet nonsignificant uncanny-valley tendencies. These findings underscore the critical role of avatar visual design in shaping emotional safety, engagement, and social processing in virtual mental-health interactions. Full article

Urban mental health burdens are increasing, prompting interest in how nearby green spaces aid emotional restoration. Bamboo-dominant green spaces are widespread in East Asia, but evidence connecting their management and structural features to restorative experiences is limited. This study conducted a controlled photo-exposure experiment in Ya’an, China, to examine how bamboo space typology and structural attributes relate to visual attention, affective responses, and short-term physiological recovery. One hundred and twenty participants viewed 50 photographs representing five bamboo space types (ecological conservation, productive–economic, protective–greenbelt, landscape–recreational, and understory–composite). Each image was linked to a matched field plot, enabling integration of structural indicators with eye tracking, EEG β/α, and repeated ratings of relaxation, pleasure, and preference. Results showed that landscape–recreational spaces received the highest affective ratings, while understory–composite spaces had longer fixations, indicating higher visual processing demands. Vertical stratification and groundcover coverage were robust predictors of affect beyond typology. Eye-movement metrics did not mediate structure–affect associations, and EEG β/α, as an auxiliary and context-dependent indicator under brief photo-based exposure, showed limited sensitivity. These findings offer insights into structural elements that can inform the design and management of bamboo green spaces for improved emotional restoration. Full article

Eye tracking can provide quantitative indices of visual exploration and cognitive processing during radiographic image interpretation. This study examined eye-movement patterns and pupil dynamics and their associations with task performance while fifth-year dental students interpreted a single mixed-dentition panoramic radiograph under free-viewing conditions. Task performance was defined as the number of correctly identified pre-specified items (three radiographic findings plus two interpretive items: dental age estimation and the presence/absence of congenital anomalies). Eye-movement patterns were classified into four groups: clockwise (R, 29.6%), counterclockwise (L, 44.4%), saccadic (S, 16.7%), and concentrated (C, 9.3%). Clockwise scan paths were associated with higher task scores and more globally distributed fixations than other patterns (p < 0.001). Linear mixed-effects modeling suggested that task scores increased up to 120 s of viewing time, whereas longer viewing times were not associated with further improvements. Furthermore, ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that higher task scores were significantly associated with a smaller mean pupil area across the entire viewing time, combined with a larger pupil area specifically during fixations, suggesting more selective allocation of cognitive resources. These findings indicate associations between global scan structure, time allocation, pupil dynamics, and task performance in this single-image setting. Generalization to overall diagnostic competence or other radiographs requires replication using multiple panoramic images and a broader range of verified findings. Full article

In complex urban traffic environments, the design of multimodal prompts in augmented reality head-up displays (AR-HUDs) plays a critical role in driving safety and operational efficiency. Despite growing interest in audiovisual navigation assistance, empirical evidence remains limited regarding when prompts should be delivered and whether visual and auditory information should remain temporally aligned. To address this gap, this study aims to examine how audiovisual prompt timing and prompt mode influence driving behavior in AR-HUD navigation systems at complex F-type-5 m intersections through a within-subject experimental design. A 2 (prompt mode: synchronized vs. asynchronous) × 3 (prompt timing: −1000 m, −600 m, −400 m) design was employed to assess driver response time, situational awareness, and eye-movement measures, including average fixation duration and fixation count. The results showed clear main effects of both prompt mode and prompt timing. Compared with asynchronous prompts, synchronized prompts consistently resulted in shorter response times, reduced visual demand, and higher situational awareness. Driving performance also improved as prompt timing shifted closer to the intersection, from −1000 m to −400 m. But no significant interaction effects were found, suggesting that prompt mode and prompt timing can be treated as relatively independent design factors. In addition, among the six experimental conditions, the −400 m synchronized condition yielded the most favorable overall performance, whereas the −1000 m asynchronous condition performed worst. These findings indicate that in time-critical and low-tolerance scenarios, such as F-type-5 m intersections, near-distance synchronized multimodal prompts should be prioritized. This study provides empirical support for optimizing prompt timing and cross-modal temporal alignment in AR-HUD systems and offers actionable implications for interface and timing design. Despite the increasing adoption of desktop virtual reality (VR) in higher education, the specific instructional efficacy of 3D interactive prompts remains inadequately understood. This study examines how such prompts—specifically dynamic spatial annotations and 3D animated demonstrations—influence learning outcomes within a desktop virtual learning environment (DVLE). Employing a quasi-experimental design integrated with eye-tracking and multimodal learning analytics, university students were assigned to either an experimental group (DVLE with 3D prompts) or a control group (basic DVLE) while completing physics tasks. Data collection encompassed eye-tracking metrics (fixation heatmaps, pupil diameter and dwell time), post-test performance (assessing knowledge comprehension and spatial problem-solving), and cognitive load ratings. Results indicated that the experimental group achieved significantly superior learning outcomes, particularly in spatial understanding and dynamic reasoning, alongside optimized visual attention patterns—characterized by shorter initial fixation latency and prolonged fixation on key 3D elements—and reduced cognitive load. Eye-tracking metrics were positively correlated with post-test scores, confirming that 3D prompts enhance learning by improving spatial attention guidance. These findings demonstrate that embedding 3D interactive prompts in DVLEs effectively directs visual attention, alleviates cognitive burden, and improves learning efficiency, offering valuable implications for the design of immersive educational settings. White noise has been proposed to enhance cognitive performance in children with ADHD, but findings are inconsistent, and benefits vary across tasks and individuals. Such variability suggests that diagnostic comparisons may overlook meaningful developmental differences. This exploratory study examined whether developmental characteristics and subjective evaluations of auditory and visual white noise predicted performance changes in two eye-movement tasks: Prolonged Fixation (PF) and Memory-Guided Saccades (MGS). Children with varying degrees of ADHD symptoms completed both tasks under noise and no-noise conditions, and noise benefit scores were calculated as the performance difference between conditions. Overall, white-noise effects were small and dependent on noise modality and task. In the PF task, large parent-rated perceptual difficulties and high visual noise discomfort were associated with improved performance under noise. In the MGS task, poor motor skills predicted visual noise benefit, whereas large visual noise discomfort predicted reduced noise benefit. These findings suggest that beneficial effects of white noise are influenced by developmental characteristics and subjective perception in task-dependent ways. The results highlight the need for individualized, transdiagnostic approaches in future noise research and challenge the notion of white noise as categorically beneficial for ADHD. Full article

Understanding how tacit knowledge embedded in visual materials is accessed and utilized during evaluation tasks remains a key challenge in human–computer interaction and visual expertise research. Although eye-tracking studies have identified systematic differences between experts and novices, findings remain inconsistent, particularly in art-related visual evaluation contexts. This study examines whether tacit aspects of visual evaluation can be inferred from gaze behavior by comparing individuals with and without formal art education. Visual evaluation was assessed using a structured, prompt-based task in which participants inspected artistic images and responded to items targeting specific visual elements. Eye movements were recorded using a screen-based eye-tracking system. Areas of Interest (AOIs) corresponding to correct-answer regions were defined a priori based on expert judgment and item prompts. Both AOI-level metrics (e.g., fixation count, mean, and total visit and gaze durations) and image-level metrics (e.g., fixation count, saccade count, and pupil size) were analyzed using appropriate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. The results showed that participants with an art-education background produced more fixations within AOIs, exhibited longer mean and total AOI visit and gaze durations, and demonstrated lower saccade counts than participants without art education. These patterns indicate more systematic and goal-directed gaze behavior during visual evaluation, suggesting that formal art education may shape tacit visual evaluation strategies. The findings also highlight the potential of eye tracking as a methodological tool for studying expertise-related differences in visual evaluation processes. Full article

With the advancement of digital technology, serious games have become an essential tool for disseminating and educating individuals about cultural heritage. However, systematic empirical research remains limited with respect to how visual elements influence users’ cognitive and emotional engagement through interactive behaviors. Using the “Macau Historic Centre Science Popularization System” as a case study, this mixed-methods study investigates the mechanisms by which visual elements affect user experience and learning outcomes in digital interactive environments. Eye-tracking data, behavioral logs, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews from 30 participants were collected to examine the impact of visual elements on cognitive resource allocation and emotional engagement. The results indicate that the game intervention significantly enhanced participants’ retention and comprehension of cultural knowledge. Eye-tracking data showed that props, text boxes, historic buildings, and the architectural light and shadow shows (as incentive feedback elements) had the highest total fixation duration (TFD) and fixation count (FC). Active-interaction visual elements showed a stronger association with emotional arousal and were more likely to elicit high-arousal experiences than passive-interaction elements. The FC of architectural light and shadow shows a positive correlation with positive emotions, immersion, and a sense of accomplishment. Interview findings revealed users’ subjective experiences regarding visual design and narrative immersion. This study proposes an integrated analytical framework linking “visual elements–interaction behaviors–cognition–emotion.” By combining eye-tracking and information dynamics analysis, it enables multidimensional measurement of users’ cognitive processes and emotional responses, providing empirical evidence to inform visual design, interaction mechanisms, and incentive strategies in serious games for cultural heritage. Virtual reality (VR) provides immersive environments that resemble real-world consumption settings, enabling realistic analysis of consumer responses to advertisements. Therefore, VR has been increasingly adopted in marketing. Visual attention is a key indicator of advertising effectiveness, and neuromarketing approaches using eye-tracking are widely used to overcome the limitations of self-report measures by providing objective insights into attentional processes. However, most previous studies have focused on static retail environments, leaving a research gap in understanding advertising effectiveness in dynamic road traffic contexts. Guided by selective attention theory, this study addresses this gap by integrating VR and eye-tracking to examine how advertisement placement under different traffic conditions influences visual attention and recall. A real-time eye-tracking measurement system was developed, and fixation duration, fixation count, and recall were used as evaluation metrics. The results showed significant differences across advertisement placement types. Advertisements positioned in front of buildings during stops elicited the highest levels of visual attention and recall, indicating that attention is greater when users are stationary than when riding. These findings indicate that cognitive resources shift from traffic-related tasks to advertisements as cognitive load decreases, highlighting the effectiveness of integrating VR and eye-tracking to objectively evaluate advertising outcomes in dynamic environments.
