New ornithopod remains have recently been discovered at the Vadillos-1 paleontological site, in Cuenca Province, Central Spain. These remains were collected in sandy and clayey deposits within “Wealden” alluvial facies, which correspond to an upper Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) alluvial-palustrine muddy floodplain paleoenvironment. The remains correspond to a part of a sacrum, including three fused sacral vertebral centra with sacral ribs and part of the sacral yoke, together with an isolated unfused sacral vertebra. An incomplete ischium has also been identified, likely belonging to the same individual. The sacral block exhibits a broad sulcus that begins at the most anterior sacral vertebra, continues through the middle vertebra, and ends in the area where the middle and the most posterior vertebrae are fused. The non fused sacral vertebra also displays a ventral sulcus. The incomplete ischium has a curved shaft with a triangular cross section towards the distal end. The combination of the morphological features of the sacrum and ischium allow its attribution to Iguanodon cf. bernissartensis. This species is identified in the area for the first time, adding new valuable data about the dinosaur assemblages from the Lower Cretaceous of Spain. Full article

Background: The phylogenetic resolution within the Gloydius halys-intermedius Complex remains debatable due to the following reasons: loci selection in previous studies varied between authors; limited dataset (1−5 mitochondrial or nuclear gene fragments); lack of sampling density; and nodal supports at specific nodes remain weak, specifically within Gloydius cognatus, G. halys, and G. stejnegeri. Objectives: To revise the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships within the G. halys-intermedius Complex, we reconstructed the molecular phylogeny and performed species delimitation based on the complete mitochondrial genomes. Methods: In this study, twelve nomenclatural groups of Gloydius species were involved in the computation of Bayesian phylogenomic inference, five of the twelve nomenclature groups were newly sequenced, while the rest were acquired from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The Bayesian phylogenomic inference was constructed based on 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes. Species delimitation was performed by two distance-based methods (ABGD and ASAP) and two tree-based methods (GMYC and bPTP). Results: This research resolved the systematic relationship within the G. intermedius Complex with the support of mitogenome-based phylogenomics, while indicating cryptic diversity within the Gloydius halys-intermedius Complex: G. intermedius samples from South Korea show as paraphyletic to the cluster of the samples from northeastern China. Species delimitation results based on four models resemble each other, supporting Gloydius caucasicus, G. cognatus, G. halys, and G. stejnegeri, each representing full species. The species delimitation results of this research also resemble the nomenclatural species based on previous morphometrical results. This research indicates that species delimitation efforts based on the phylogenomic approach would likely resolve complex evolutionary relationships. Full article

A new generic synonymy is proposed: Turgonalus Rasnitsyn, 1990 (=Turgonaliscus Engel, 2016, syn. nov. and = Ahiromaimetsha Perrichot, Azar, Nel and Engel, 2011, syn. nov.); Guyotemaimetsha Perrichot, Nel and Néraudeau, 2004 (=Burmaimetsha Perrichot, 2013, syn. nov.); Afrapia, Rasnitsyn and Brothers, 2009 (=Afromaimetsha, Rasnitsyn and Brothers, 2009, syn. nov.); and Iberomaimetsha nihtmara Ortega-Blanco, Delclòs and Engel, 2011 are transferred to Afrapia, Rasnitsyn and Brothers, 2009. This results in the following new combinations: Turgonalus cooperi, Rasnitsyn and Jarzembowski, 1998, comb. resurr.; Turgonalus najlae (Perrichot, Azar, Nel & Engel, 2011), comb. nov; Afrapia robusta (Rasnitsyn & Brothers, 2009), comb. nov; and Afrapia nihtmara (Ortega-Blanco, Delclòs & Engel, 2011), comb. nov. The occurrence of various genera of Maimetshidae in amber and compression fossil and the morphological differences of the forewings in all the fossil species are provided, which highlights a high level of genus-level diversity among Mesozoic maimetshids. The study of vertebrate palaeontology in the United Kingdom holds a significant position in global research. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and topic modelling of UK vertebrate palaeontology from 2014 to 2023, utilizing data from the DeepBone database and Web of Science. A total of 2884 publications were analysed using bibliometric methods and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to identify key research themes, institutional contributions, and international collaborations. The results reveal a significant increase in publication volume over the decade, peaking in 2021 with 374 papers. High-impact journals such as Nature and Science published approximately 6.60% of the total papers. The LDA analysis identified seven primary research themes, including morphology, palaeoanthropology, evolutionary biology, and geological periods. The Natural History Museum, University of Bristol, and University of Oxford emerged as major contributing institutions. Scientists from the United States were found to be the most frequent international collaborator. The average impact factor of the top journals in the field was 8.28 in 2024, highlighting the high quality of UK vertebrate palaeontology research. This study provides objective insights into the current state of vertebrate palaeontology in the UK, emphasizing its multidisciplinary nature, the importance of international cooperation in the field. An articulated group of skeletal elements comprising a sacrum, both ilia and a first caudal vertebra, plus an isolated tooth found in immediate proximity to the bones, from the lower Cenomanian Chalk at Saint-Jouin-Bruneval (Seine-Maritime, Normandy, France) is described and attributed to a new genus and species of abelisaurid theropod, Caletodraco cottardi, on the basis of several characters of the sacrum and pelvis. The peculiar shape of the transverse process of the first caudal vertebra shows that Caletodraco cottardi differs from majungasaurine abelisaurids previously described from Europe, such as Arcovenator escotae, and belongs to the Furileusauria, a group of derived abelisaurids hitherto recognized only from South America. The presence of a furileusaurian abelisaurid in the Cenomanian of Normandy suggests that the biogeographical history of the Abelisauridae in Europe was more complex than hitherto admitted. Several previously described European abelisaurids, such as the Albian Genusaurus sisteronis, may in fact belong to the Furileusauria. Full article

Pollen records from archaeological sites provide a direct reflection of the vegetation in the immediate vicinity, enabling an accurate depiction of anthropogenic impacts on vegetation. In this study, we applied the biomization technique to fossil pollen data to reconstruct human impact on the biome at the Chengzishan archaeological site in western Liaoning, China, and hence to explore the response of temperate forest vegetation to human activities. The results indicate that the original vegetation at Chengzishan was warm temperate coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest (TEDE). The findings suggest a shift in biome dominance over time, with cool temperate steppe (STEP) replacing TEDE as the dominant biome in response to human activities. Combined with archaeobotanical records, we conclude that the observed vegetation changes in the pollen record were closely linked to deforestation, fire use, and agricultural activities. Full article

The Hendy Test is widely used for assessing whether isotopic equilibrium was reached in speleothems by examining the δ18O and δ13C correlation along a single growth layer. However, stalagmite micro-layers are typically only a few micrometers thick and taper off from the center towards the sides, making it challenging to sample within the same growth layer in practice. To address this, we selected three caves in the monsoon region of China (Shihua Cave in the north, Heshang Cave in the central, and Baojinggong Cave in the south) to verify whether the modern cave calcite has reached equilibrium fractionation with drip water. We examined the spatial variations in the δ18O and δ13C values of farmed calcite on glass plates, which are analogous to a single growth layer. The δ18O and δ13C correlations of farmed calcite from different cave sites are consistently strong, suggesting that kinetic fractionation effects are prevalent, especially at the drip sites with lower drip rates due to longer CO2 degassing. The δ18O–δ13C covariations can also occur along speleothem growth axes on short time scales, while isotopic variations over longer time scales are still in response to climate change. We propose that the Hendy Test criteria might not be prerequisites to isotopic equilibrium, and a Replication Test provides a more reliable indication of the integrity of isotopic proxies in paleoclimate research. Lithic artifacts are crucial for elucidation of the temporal and spatial patterns of prehistoric human occupation of the Tibetan Plateau. Core-and-flake technology is particularly noteworthy, as it is distinguished by its broad temporal span and widespread distribution across the plateau. In this study, we present the results of a reassessment of the lithic assemblage from the Su-re site in Tingri County, Shigatse City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China. Its resemblance to lithic assemblages from Southwestern China implies a close relationship between the plateau and its southeastern vicinity, contributing to the diversification of technology and prehistoric humans on the Tibetan Plateau. Moreover, gneissic pebbles transported by glacial meltwater in the Tingri Graben—the most suitable raw material available in the vicinity—explains the presence of prehistoric humans in the inhospitable Qomolangma region. Two nanhsiungchelyid carapaces from the Upper Cretaceous of Ganzhou Basin, Jiangxi Province, Southern China, are reported and assigned to Nanhsiungchelys sp. The new material reveals an unusual carapace morphology that was either not or poorly preserved in previously known Nanhsiungchelys specimens, including differentiated neurals, alternating costals, significantly modified scutes with vertebrals 4–5 contacting each other at a point, reduced pleurals 2–4 and greatly expanded lateral and posterior marginals. The discovery extends the geographical distribution of Nanhsiungchelys to the Ganzhou Basin. Full article

A new praeaulacid genus and species, Azygdellitha nova gen. et sp. nov., is described and illustrated based on a male specimen from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber from Hukawng Valley, Myanmar. This newly discovered taxon increased the diversity of praeaulacid wasps during the Cretaceous period. While this new taxon shares similarities of wing venation with most species of the subfamily Praeaulacinae, it strongly differs from that of three genera previously described from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber: Mesevania, Paleosyncrasis, and Praegastrinus. We explore the possibility that these genera constitute a distinct tribe within the Praeaulacinae, distinguished by their wing venation. We provide illustrations and emphasize the potentially diagnostic traits supporting this classification. Full article

Bonebeds occurring in exposures of the Burlington and Keokuk Limestones (Mississippian/Osagean) along the Iowa and Illinois border (USA) contain an abundant and diverse collection of chondrichthyan remains that includes teeth, spines, denticles, and coprolites. These remains represent cochliodont, hybodont, petalodont, ctenacanthid, symmoriid, and acanthodian (stem chondrichthyan) taxa. The thickest of these beds, herein referred to as the Burlington–Keokuk bonebed, occurs at the top of the Burlington Limestone and presents a remarkable opportunity to study the assemblage of mid-continent, Middle Mississippian chondrichthyans. Bulk matrix samples of this bonebed were collected from two quarries (Biggsville Quarry, Biggsville, IL, USA, and Nelson Quarry, Mediapolis, IA, USA) and disaggregated. Among the multitude of previously known taxa, several teeth represented a new genus and species of hybodont shark. Herein, we describe these teeth as Columnaodus witzkei (gen. et sp. nov.), a hybodontiform with dental features comparable to unnamed specimens reported from elsewhere. Full article

Microscopic analysis of fossils from the Lightning Ridge district of northwestern New South Wales, Australia, shows that opal has been typically deposited in variable cavities left by the degradation of the original organic material. Fine-grained, clay-rich sediments have preserved the external morphology, and opalization has produced detailed casts with different modes of preservation of internal details. Plant remains include cones, cone scales, fruiting bodies, and seeds, but the most common specimens are twigs, stems, and wood fragments. These specimens commonly contain angular inclusions that represent small tissue fragments produced by the degradation of the original wood. Inclusions commonly have a “hollow box” structure where the organic material has decomposed after the initial opal filling of the mold. These spaces commonly contain traces of the cellular architecture, in the form of wood fiber textures imprinted on the cavity wall, degraded cellular material, and silicified tracheids. Opal casts of mollusk shells and crustacean bioliths preserve the shape but no calcium carbonate residue. Likewise, opal casts of vertebrate remains (bones, teeth, osteoderms) lack preservation of the original bioapatite. These compositions are evidence that burial in fine clays and silts, isolated from the effects of water and oxygen, caused protracted delays between the timing of burial, decomposition, and the development of vacuities in the claystones that became sites for opal precipitation. The length of time required for the dissolution of cellulosic/ligninitic plant remains, calcium carbonate items, and calcium phosphates in bones and teeth cannot be quantified, but evidence from opal-bearing formations worldwide reveals that these processes can be very slow. The timing of opalization can be inferred from previous studies that concluded that Cenozoic tectonism produced faults and fissures that allowed horizontal and lateral movement of silica-bearing groundwater. Comparisons of Australian opal-AG with opal from international localities suggest that opalization was a Neogene phenomenon. The transformation of Opal-AG → Opal-CT is well-documented for the diagenesis of siliceous biogenic sediments and siliceous sinter from geothermal areas. Likewise, precious and common opal from the late Miocene Virgin Valley Formation in northern Nevada, USA, shows the rapidity of the Opal-AG → Opal-CT transformation. Taken together, we consider this evidence to indicate a Neogene age for Lightning Ridge opalization and by inference for the opalization of the extensive opal deposits of the Great Artesian Basin in Australia. New paleontology discoveries include a surprising level of cellular detail in plant fossils, the preservation of individual tracheids as opal casts, evidence of opalized plant pith or vascular tissue (non-gymnosperm), and the first report of Early Cretaceous coprolites from New South Wales, Australia. (1) Background: despite the fact that nowadays the genus Vulpes Frisch, 1775, is the most diverse among extant Canidae, its fossil record is utterly scarce, especially in the Asian Pliocene. The sparse nature of this record further complicates the reconstruction of the evolutionary scenario to fit these taxa with extant species. The situation seems to change slightly in the Early Pleistocene when two species are recorded: Vulpes alopecoides (Del Campana, 1913) in Europe and Vulpes chikushanensis, Young, 1930, in Asian localities. Unlike the former, which has an extensive record, the remains of the Chinese V. chikushanensis are sporadic and the validity of the taxon has also been questioned. (2) Methods: the study of the specimens from the Early Pleistocene site of Bajiazui (1.8–1.2 Ma, Qingyang, Gansu) in comparison to an extensive sample of Vulpes spp. The Pliocene–Early Pleistocene is relevant for the delimitation of fossil foxes variability; (3) Results: morphologically and morphometrically, the specimens of Bajiazui fit with the specimens of V. chikushanensis from other Chinese localities of the Early Pleistocene, e.g., Longdan (Gansu) and Huiyu (Fangshang), highlighting some difference with the latest Early Pleistocene forms of Jigushan fox; (4) Conclusions: the revision of the Asian fossil record of Vulpes is crucial in our attempt to understand and reconstruct the evolution of carnivoran guild during the late Early Pleistocene (1.8–0.8 Ma). The fox remains from Bajiazui, although fragmentary, add a valuable piece to our knowledge of V. chikushanensis, a species possibly strongly related to the extant Vulpes corsac (Linnaeus, 1768). The first discovery of a dinosaur bone from the Kingdom of Cambodia is reported in this paper. It consists of a sauropod fibula from a sandstone layer on Koh Paur island, in Koh Kong province, in south-western Cambodia. The dinosaur-bearing bed belongs to the non-marine Grès Supérieurs series and is apparently of Early Cretaceous age. On the basis of various characters, notably the development of the anteromedial crest, the dinosaur fibula from Koh Paur is referred to a euhelopodid titanosauriform. This first dinosaur discovery in Cambodia suggests that the thick non-marine formations which cover vast areas in the south-western part of the country are potentially an important source of continental Mesozoic vertebrates. The Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa hosts one of the most important osteological collections of cetaceans all over Europe, as well as a conspicuous paleontological collection, including several holotypes of Archaeoceti (archaic whales), Mysticeti (baleen whales), and Odontoceti (toothed whales). In order to valorize these collections, we used 3D technologies to digitize the most relevant specimens, create an online archive, and make the resulting models accessible and shareable with the broadest audience possible through social media profiles and internet browsers. Tens of specimens were surface-scanned using a structured-light scanner, and the resulting 3D models were processed for post-production through the 3D software Blender whenever necessary. All the 3D scans were then gathered in the online repository Sketchfab, which was chosen for its user-friendly interface and common usage among museum institutions. The result is a web page that hosts 35 surface scans of extant and extinct cetacean specimens. This Sketchfab account was linked to the social media (Facebook and Instagram) profiles of the MSNUP to increase the visibility of the museum and promote the dissemination of its outstanding collections of modern and fossil cetaceans. The preliminary results of such an effort are encouraging in terms of views and online interactions. Hopefully, this effort of digitization and online archiving will soon extend to other vertebrate collections. Full article
