EQResNet: Real-Time Simulation and Resilience Assessment of Post-Earthquake Emergency Highway Transportation Networks

Multiple uncertainties in traffic demand fluctuations and infrastructure vulnerability during seismic events pose significant challenges for the resilience assessment of highway transportation networks (HTNs). While Monte Carlo simulation remains the dominant approach for uncertainty propagation, its high computational cost limits its scalability, particularly in metropolitan-scale networks. This study proposes an EQResNet framework for accelerated post-earthquake resilience assessment of HTNs. The model integrates network topology, interregional traffic demand, and roadway characteristics into a streamlined deep neural network architecture. A comprehensive surrogate modeling strategy is developed to replace conventional traffic simulation modules, including highway status realization, shortest path computation, and traffic flow assignment. Combined with seismic fragility models and recovery functions for regional bridges, the framework captures the dynamic evolution of HTN functionality following seismic events. A multi-dimensional resilience evaluation system is also established to quantify network performance from emergency response and recovery perspectives. A case study on the Sioux Falls network under probabilistic earthquake scenarios demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving 95% prediction accuracy while reducing computational time by 90% compared to traditional numerical simulations. The results highlight the framework’s potential as a scalable, efficient, and reliable tool for large-scale post-disaster transportation system analysis. Full article

Static Priority-based Multiple Access (SPMA) is an emerging and promising wireless MAC protocol which is widely used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) networks, also known as drone networks, refer to a system of interconnected UAVs that communicate and collaborate to perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These networks leverage wireless communication technologies to share data, coordinate movements, and optimize mission execution. In SPMA, traffic arriving at the UAV network node can be divided into multiple priorities according to the information timeliness, and the packets of each priority are stored in the corresponding queues with different thresholds to transmit packet, thus guaranteeing the high success rate and low latency for the highest-priority traffic. Unfortunately, the multi-priority queue scheduling of SPMA deprives the packet transmitting opportunity of low-priority traffic, which results in unfair conditions among different-priority traffic. To address this problem, in this paper we propose the method of Adaptive Credit-Based Shaper with Reinforcement Learning (abbreviated as ACBS-RL) to balance the performance of all-priority traffic. In ACBS-RL, the Credit-Based Shaper (CBS) is introduced to SPMA to provide relatively fair packet transmission opportunity among multiple traffic queues by limiting the transmission rate. Due to the dynamic situations of the wireless environment, the Q-learning-based reinforcement learning method is leveraged to adaptively adjust the parameters of CBS (i.e., idleslope and sendslope) to achieve better performance among all priority queues. The extensive simulation results show that compared with traditional SPMA protocol, the proposed ACBS-RL can increase UAV network throughput while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of all priority traffic. In the era of Industry 5.0, future wireless networks are increasingly shifting from traditional symmetric architectures toward heterogeneous and asymmetric paradigms, driven by the demand for diversified and dynamic services. This architectural evolution gives rise to complex and asymmetric flows, such as the coexistence of periodic and burst flows with varying latency, jitter, and deadline constraints, posing new challenges for deterministic transmission. Traditional time-sensitive networking (TSN) is well-suited for periodic flows but lacks the flexibility to effectively handle dynamic, asymmetric traffi. To address this limitation, we propose a two-stage asymmetric flow scheduling framework with dynamic deadline control, termed A-TSN. In the first stage, we design a Deep Q-Network-based Dynamic Injection Time Slot algorithm (DQN-DITS) to optimize slot allocation for periodic flows under varying network loads. In the second stage, we introduce the Dynamic Deadline Online (DDO) scheduling algorithm, which enables real-time scheduling for asymmetric flows while satisfying flow deadlines and capacity constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces end-to-end latency, improves scheduling efficiency, and enhances adaptability to high-volume asymmetric traffic, offering a scalable solution for future deterministic wireless networks. A Swarm-Based Multi-Objective Framework for Lightweight and Real-Time IoT Intrusion Detection

Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services have transformed the way people interact with their environment, enhancing comfort and quality of life. Additionally, Machine Learning (ML) approaches show significant promise for detecting intrusions in IoT environments. However, the high dimensionality, class imbalance, and complexity of network traffic—combined with the dynamic nature of sensor networks—pose substantial challenges to the development of efficient and effective detection algorithms. In this study, a multi-objective metaheuristic optimization approach, referred to as MOOIDS-IoT, is integrated with ML techniques to develop an intelligent cybersecurity system for IoT environments. MOOIDS-IoT combines a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based feature selection technique with a multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. PSO optimizes convergence speed, model complexity, and classification accuracy by dynamically adjusting the weights and thresholds of the deployed classifiers. Furthermore, PSO integrates Pareto-based multi-objective optimization directly into the particle swarm framework, extending conventional swarm intelligence while preserving a diverse set of non-dominated solutions. In addition, the GA reduces training time and eliminates redundancy by identifying the most significant input characteristics. The MOOIDS-IoT framework is evaluated using two lightweight models—MOO-PSO-XGBoost and MOO-PSO-RF—across two benchmark datasets, namely the NSL-KDD and CICIoT2023 datasets. On CICIoT2023, MOO-PSO-RF obtains 91.42% accuracy, whereas MOO-PSO-XGBoost obtains 98.38% accuracy. In addition, both models perform well on NSL-KDD (MOO-PSO-RF: 99.66% accuracy, MOO-PSO-XGBoost: 98.46% accuracy). The proposed approach is particularly appropriate for IoT applications with limited resources, where scalability and model efficiency are crucial considerations. Full article

Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

Road markings, as critical components of transportation infrastructure, are crucial for ensuring traffic safety. Accurate quantification of their damage severity is vital for effective maintenance prioritization. However, existing methods are limited to detecting the presence of damage without assessing its extent. To address this limitation, we propose a novel segmentation-based framework for estimating the degree of road marking damage. The method comprises two stages: segmentation of residual pixels from the damaged markings and segmentation of the intact markings region. This dual-segmentation strategy enables precise reconstruction and comparison for severity estimation. To enhance segmentation performance, we proposed two key modules: the Asymmetric Large Field-of-View Contextual (ALFVC) module, which captures rich multi-scale contextual features, and the supervised Boundary Feature Enhancement (BFE) module, which strengthens shape representation and boundary accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that our method achieved an average segmentation accuracy of 89.44%, outperforming the baseline by 5.86 percentage points. Moreover, the damage quantification achieved a minimum error rate of just 0.22% on the proprietary dataset. The proposed approach was both effective and lightweight, providing valuable support for automated maintenance planning, and significantly improving the efficiency and precision of road marking management. Accurate prediction of airport delays under convective weather conditions is essential for effective traffic coordination and improving overall airport efficiency. Traditional methods mainly rely on numerical weather and traffic indicators, but they often fail to capture the spatial distribution of traffic flows within the terminal area. To address this limitation, we propose a novel image-based representation named Multi-Channel Traffic and Weather Scene Image (MTWSI), which maps both meteorological and traffic information onto a two-dimensional airspace grid, thereby preserving spatial relationships. Based on the MTWSI, we develop a delay prediction model named ADLCNN. This model first uses a convolutional neural network to extract deep spatial features from the scene images and then classifies each sample into a delay level. Using real operational data from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, this paper shows that ADLCNN achieves significantly higher prediction accuracy compared to traditional machine learning methods. The results confirm that MTWSI provides a more accurate representation of real traffic conditions under convective weather. Full article

Effective management and handling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) can yield significant technical and environmental benefits for road pavement construction. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date chronological review of studies on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures—primarily hot mix asphalt (HMA)—incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Since the main limitation of RCA is the presence of residual adhered mortar, the review also includes studies that applied various surface treatments (mechanical, chemical, and thermal, among others) to enhance mixture performance. The article summarizes the experimental procedures used and highlights the key findings and conclusions of the reviewed research. Although the results are varied and sometimes contradictory—mainly due to the source variability and heterogeneity of RCA—the use of these materials is technically viable. Moreover, their application can provide environmental, social, and economic advantages, particularly in the construction of low-traffic roadways. Finally, the article identifies research gaps and offers recommendations for future researches. Full article

Rural roads are critical for connecting isolated communities to essential services such as education and health and administrative services, as well as production and market opportunities in low-income countries. More than 70% of movements of people and goods in Sub-Saharan Africa are heavily reliant on rural transport systems, using both motorised but mainly alternative means of transport. However, rural roads often suffer from poor construction due to the use of low-strength, in situ soils and limited financial resources, leading to premature failures and subsequent traffic disruptions with significant economic losses. This study investigates the use of rice husk ash (RHA), a waste byproduct from rice production, as a sustainable supplement to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for soil stabilisation in order to increase durability and sustainability of rural roads, hence limit recurrent maintenance needs and associated transport costs and challenges. To conduct this study, soil samples collected from Mulungushi, Zambia, were treated with combinations of 6–10% OPC and 10–15% RHA by weight. Laboratory tests measured maximum dry density (MDD), optimum moisture content (OMC), and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values; the main parameters assessed to ensure the quality of road construction soils. Results showed that while the MDD did not change significantly and varied between 1505 kg/m3 and 1519 kg/m3, the OMC increased hugely from 19.6% to as high as 26.2% after treatment with RHA. The CBR value improved significantly, with the 8% OPC + 10% RHA mixture achieving the highest resistance to deformation. These results suggest that RHA can enhance the durability and sustainability of rural roads and hence improve transport systems and subsequently improve socioeconomic factors in rural areas. Rural regions face significant barriers to adopting IoT technologies, due to limited connectivity, energy constraints, and poor technical infrastructure. While urban environments benefit from advanced digital systems and cloud services, rural areas often lack the necessary conditions to deploy and evaluate secure and autonomous IoT solutions. To help overcome this gap, this paper presents the Smart Rural IoT Lab, a modular and reproducible testbed designed to replicate the deployment conditions in rural areas using open-source tools and affordable hardware. The laboratory integrates long-range and short-range communication technologies in six experimental scenarios, implementing protocols such as MQTT, HTTP, UDP, and CoAP. These scenarios simulate realistic rural use cases, including environmental monitoring, livestock tracking, infrastructure access control, and heritage site protection. Local data processing is achieved through containerized services like Node-RED, InfluxDB, MongoDB, and Grafana, ensuring complete autonomy, without dependence on cloud services. A key contribution of the laboratory is the generation of structured datasets from real network traffic captured with Tcpdump and preprocessed using Zeek. Unlike simulated datasets, the collected data reflect communication patterns generated from real devices. Although the current dataset only includes benign traffic, the platform is prepared for future incorporation of adversarial scenarios (spoofing, DoS) to support AI-based cybersecurity research. While experiments were conducted in an indoor controlled environment, the testbed architecture is portable and suitable for future outdoor deployment. The Smart Rural IoT Lab addresses a critical gap in current research infrastructure, providing a realistic and flexible foundation for developing secure, cloud-independent IoT solutions, contributing to the digital transformation of rural regions. Traffic accidents pose a significant threat to public safety, resulting in numerous fatalities, injuries, and a substantial economic burden each year. The development of predictive models capable of the real-time forecasting of post-accident impact using readily available data can play a crucial role in preventing adverse outcomes and enhancing overall safety. However, existing accident predictive models encounter two main challenges: first, a reliance on either costly or non-real-time data, and second, the absence of a comprehensive metric to measure post-accident impact accurately. To address these limitations, this study proposes a deep neural network model known as the cascade model. It leverages readily available real-world data from Los Angeles County to predict post-accident impacts. The model consists of two components: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The LSTM model captures temporal patterns, while the CNN extracts patterns from the sparse accident dataset. Furthermore, an external traffic congestion dataset is incorporated to derive a new feature called the “accident impact” factor, which quantifies the influence of an accident on surrounding traffic flow. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid machine learning method in predicting the post-accident impact compared to state-of-the-art baselines. The results reveal a higher precision in predicting minimal impacts (i.e., cases with no reported accidents) and a higher recall in predicting more significant impacts (i.e., cases with reported accidents). This work focuses on the possibilities of generating synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction in area-based speed monitoring systems. The purpose of the research conducted was to develop a methodology for generating realistic synthetic data to support the design of a continuous vehicle speed monitoring system to minimize the risk of traffic accidents caused by speeding. The SUMO traffic simulator was used to model driver behavior in the analyzed area and within a given road network. Data from OpenStreetMap and field measurements from over a dozen speed detectors were integrated. Preliminary tests were carried out to record vehicle speeds. Based on these data, several simulation scenarios were run and compared to real-world observations using average speed, the percentage of speed limit violations, root mean square error (RMSE), and percentage compliance. A new metric, the Combined Speed Accuracy Score (CSAS), has been introduced to assess the consistency of simulation results with real-world data. For this study, a basic hazard prediction model was developed using LoRaWAN sensor network data and environmental contextual variables, including time, weather, location, and accident history. The research results in a method for evaluating and selecting the simulation scenario that best represents reality and drivers’ propensities to exceed speed limits. The results and findings demonstrate that it is possible to produce synthetic data with a level of agreement exceeding 90% with real data. Thus, it was shown that it is possible to generate synthetic data for machine learning in hazard prediction for area-based speed control systems using traffic simulators. Full article

However, securing digital twins remains a significant challenge due to the dynamic and adversarial nature of cyber–physical environments. In this work, we propose TwinFedPot, an innovative digital twin-based security architecture that combines honeypot-driven data collection with Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) for robust and adaptive cyber threat detection without requiring prior sampling. The framework leverages Inverse Federated Distillation (IFD) to train the DT server, where edge-deployed honeypots generate semantic predictions of anomalous behavior and upload soft logits instead of raw data. Unlike conventional federated approaches, TwinFedPot reverses the typical knowledge flow by distilling collective intelligence from the honeypots into a central teacher model hosted on the DT. This inversion allows the system to learn generalized attack patterns using only limited data, while preserving privacy and enhancing robustness. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and F1-score, establishing TwinFedPot as a scalable and effective defense solution for smart traffic infrastructures. Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) driven by Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are usually trained using publicly available datasets consisting of labeled traffic samples, where labels refer to traffic classes, usually one benign and multiple harmful. This paper studies the generalizability of models trained on such datasets. This issue is crucial given the application of such a model to actual internet traffic because high-performance measures obtained on datasets do not necessarily imply similar efficiency on the real traffic. We propose a procedure consisting of cross-validation using various sets sharing some standard traffic classes combined with the t-SNE visualization. We apply it to investigate four well-known and widely used datasets: UNSW-NB15, CIC-CSE-IDS2018, BoT-IoT, and ToN-IoT. Our investigation reveals that the high accuracy of a model obtained on one set used for training is reproducible on others only to a limited extent. Moreover, benign traffic classes’ generalizability differs from harmful traffic. Given its application in the actual network environment, it implies that one needs to select the data used to train the ML model carefully to determine to what extent the classes present in the dataset used for training are similar to those in the real target traffic environment. On the other hand, merging datasets may result in more exhaustive data collection, consisting of a more diverse spectrum of training samples. Full article

Spatiotemporal Analysis of BTEX and PM Using Me-DOAS and GIS in Busan’s Industrial Complexes

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have progressed in Korea, yet public attention to hazardous pollutants emitted from industrial complexes remains limited. With the increasing coexistence of industrial and residential areas, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring and management plans that account for the rapid dispersion of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). In this study, we conducted spatiotemporal data collection and analysis for the first time in Korea using real-time measurements obtained through mobile extractive differential optical absorption spectroscopy (Me-DOAS) mounted on a solar occultation flux (SOF) vehicle. The measurements were conducted in the Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex in Busan, which comprises the Sasang Industrial Complex and the Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex. BTEX compounds were selected as target volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and real-time measurements of both BTEX and fine particulate matter (PM) were conducted simultaneously. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 (r = 0.848–0.894), indicating shared sources. In Sasang, BTEX levels were associated with traffic and localized facilities, while in Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim, the concentrations were more influenced by industrial zoning and wind patterns. Notably, inter-compound correlations such as benzene–m-xylene and p-xylene–toluene suggested possible co-emission sources. This study proposes a GIS-based, three-dimensional air quality management approach that integrates variables such as traffic volume, wind direction, and speed through real-time measurements. The findings are expected to inform effective pollution control strategies and future environmental management plans for industrial complexes. Full article
