Limited Time Resolution of Event Data Loggers Can Bias Intensity Measurements from Tipping-Bucket Rain Gauges

Event data loggers are frequently used to record the date and time of tip events in tipping-bucket rain gauges. The HOBO® pendant event data logger is one such commercially available device commonly used for this purpose. It can record the contact closure of a TBGR reed switch at a maximum timing resolution of 1 s, tied to the timing of the logger clock, which is set each time the logger is launched. These event loggers are ideal for the routine recording of rainfall. This paper addresses the issue of whether they can also be relied upon when estimating short-term intensities, for which they were not designed. New experiments show that for a series of switch closures at fixed intervals other than exact multiples of 1 s, the HOBO® logger fails to record evenly spaced tip events. Thus, for example, with pulses at fixed 2.75 s intervals, the logger records some events as occurring at 2 s intervals and others at 3 s intervals. This quantization error means that there can be large errors in the logged time between bucket tip events. In natural rainfall, tip events can occur at any time, and inter-tip times, from which intensity can be estimated, will generally not be an integral number of seconds. Consequently, particularly in intense rain, the logger behaviour just described can lead to erroneous estimates of the rainfall rate estimated from the duration of individual inter-tip times. The Southern Ocean, located between Antarctica and the southern tips of South America, Africa and Australia, encompasses an immense area across the southern Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans with no clearly defined limits. For the purposes of studying marine heterobranch sea slugs, we consider the Southern Ocean to include all ocean areas located south of latitude 41° S. South of this latitude, we consider different areas and zones: the area of South America (the Patagonia/Magellanic area), the island of Tasmania, the southern island of New Zealand, the Subantarctic area (the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, the South Orkney Islands, South Sandwich Island, Bouvet Island, the islands of Crozet and Prince Edward, the Kerguelen Islands, and Macquarie Island) and the area of Antarctica, in which we consider four zones (Weddell Sea, West Antarctica, Ross Sea and East Antarctica). Reviewing all available references and unpublished data from the authors, in total, 394 species of heterobranch sea slugs have been recorded to date in the Southern Ocean > 41° S, with Nudibranchia standing out with 209 species and Cephalaspidea with 90 species. The marine heterobranchs of Tasmania (154 species) and southern New Zealand (120 species) have been well studied. Sea slug fauna of the Antarctic and Subantarctic regions have been the subject of several partial studies; however, there are still many gaps in knowledge across both areas. Eighty-nine different species of sea slug have been recorded so far in strictly Antarctic waters (West Antarctica, 45 species; Weddell Sea, 48 species; Ross Sea, 51 species; East Antarctica, 42 species), while in the various Subantarctic regions, there are 93 species (36 species from South Georgia, 17 species from the South Orkneys, 12 species from south Sandwich, 6 species from Bouvet, 10 species from Prince Edward and Crozet Islands, 15 species from Kerguelen, 3 species from Macquarie Island, 29 species from the Falkland Islands and 71 species from the coast of South America). In the taxonomic section, for each of the species, the location and the authors of the records are indicated, and for many of the species, interesting biological, taxonomic or biogeographic observations are also provided. The importance of sampling in underexplored areas is discussed, as well as greater-depth sampling for a better understanding of the sea slugs of the Southern Ocean. Full article

Background/Objectives: MYO3A belongs to the unconventional myosin superfamily, and the myosin IIIa protein localizes on the tip of the stereocilia of vestibular and cochlear hair cells. Deficiencies in MYO3A have been reported to cause the deformation of hair cells into abnormally long stereocilia with an increase in spacing. MYO3A is a rare causative gene of autosomal recessive sensorineural hearing loss (DFNB30), with only 13 cases reported to date. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the phenotypes caused by MYO3A variations. Methods: Massively parallel DNA sequencing was performed on 15,684 Japanese hearing loss patients (mean age 27.5 ± 23.1 years old, 6574 male, 8612 female and 498 patients for whom information was unavailable), identifying nine candidate patients with MYO3A variants. Results: We identified eight causative MYO3A variants by massively parallel DNA sequencing, including six novel variants, and reported nine individuals possessing MYO3A gene variants, which is the largest group of non-related patients yet to be detected. Our findings confirmed that MYO3A variants cause progressive hearing loss, with its onset varying from birth to the second decade, eventually leading to severe-to-profound hearing loss. Conclusions: We clarified that patients with MYO3A gene variants present with late-onset, progressive hearing loss. Our findings have enabled us to predict the outcomes of hearing loss in patients with candidate MYO3A gene variants and to provide intervention in a timely manner. Full article

The fortified hilltop settlement of Monkodonja, located near Rovinj on the west coast of Istria, Croatia, provides insight into Bronze Age occupation and conflict in the Adriatic region. Established around 2000 BC, as evidenced by a series of C14 dates from human and animal bones, the settlement experienced significant construction phases, particularly in its defensive architecture. Its earliest fortifications, built with limestone blocks using dry-stone wall techniques, date to the 19th century BC, with major expansions in the 16th century BC, where the primary wall was doubled in width and reached over 3 m in thickness. Monkodonja’s architectural complexity, notably the West Gate and Acropolis fortifications, and certain types of artifacts reveal influences from southern regions such the eastern Aegean. However, the settlement appears to have met a violent end around the 15th century BC, suggested by destruction layers, widespread burning, and the presence of weapons such as a lance tip, bronze axe, and slingstones. Monkodonja’s destruction raises questions about broader military conflicts in the Adriatic region during this period. Possible causes could include localized warfare or connections to larger-scale disturbances. Research in Monkodonja is also significant in the context of the debate surrounding the emergence of the so-called Castellieri settlements in Istria at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, it was proposed that a migration of people to the Istrian peninsula brought this new settlement form and other influences, leading to a significant population increase. The appearance of the Castellieri settlement form coincides with a period marked by documented climatic changes and two major natural disasters in the form of volcanic eruptions. Full article

Wisteria vein mosaic virus (WVMV, Potyvirus wisteriae), a virus belonging to the genus Potyvirus, is responsible for Wisteria vein mosaic disease (WMD), a severe disease that affects Wisteria, a genus of garden plants acclaimed worldwide. Although probably originating in the Far East, WVMV infection was first reported in the US, and subsequently in numerous countries. Following the first molecular detection of an Italian isolate, WVMV Bari, its full-length genome was achieved using NGS barcoding technology. A PhyML phylogenetic analysis, supported by clustering algorithm validation, identified a clear separation between two phylogroups. One major clade comprised WVMV strains isolated from Wisteria spp. A second clade grouped three highly divergent strains, at the borderline species threshold, all found in non-wisteria hosts. Relying on a Relative Time Dated Tips (RTDT) molecular clock, the first emergence of WVMV clades has been traced back to around the 17th century. A network inference analysis confirmed the sharp separation between the two host-related phylogroups, also highlighting the presence of potential intermediate variants. Inter-population genetic parameters revealed a very high genetic differentiation in both populations, which was made reliable by statistically significant permutation tests. The migrant number (Nm) and fixation index (FST) evidenced a restricted gene flow and strong population structures. According to the dN/dS ratio and negative neutrality tests, it was derived that purifying selection at the expense of non-silent variants is underway within WVMV populations. Targeting WVMV evolutionary traits, the present effort raised interesting questions about the underestimated potential of this culpably neglected species to spread in economically relevant crops. The main intention of our study is, therefore, to propose an evolution-based analysis approach that serves as a case study to investigate how other potyviruses or newly emerging viruses may spread. Introduction: Glaucoma, one leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, is primarily caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Recently, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGSs) have become popular due to their shorter surgical times, tissue-sparing nature, and faster recovery. One such MIGS, the Hydrus® nickel–titanium alloy Microstent, helps lower IOP by improving aqueous humor outflow. The NIDEK GS-1 automated 360° gonioscope provides advanced imaging of the chamber angle for evaluation and documentation. The aim of this study was to test automated 360° gonioscopy for the detection of postoperative positional variations after Hydrus® Microstent implantation. This study is the largest to date to evaluate post-op positioning of the Hydrus® Microstent using the NIDEK GS-1. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed postoperative outcomes and stent location in eyes diagnosed with mild to moderate glaucoma that underwent Hydrus® Microstent implantation with or without phacoemulsification. Patients with prior IOP-lowering surgery or vitrectomy were excluded. Analyses of the postoperative Hydrus® Microstent position were based on the evaluation of automated 360° gonioscopy images. Results: Twenty-three eyes were included in the study, and all showed a reduction in IOP and a decrease in antiglaucomatous drop use postoperatively. Postoperative gonoscopic images showed variations in implant position. In all cases, the proximal inlet was clearly visible in the anterior chamber. The degree of protrusion into the anterior chamber was variable. The distal tip of the stent was visible behind the trabecular meshwork in Schlemm’s canal in five cases, in the anterior chamber in one case, and not visible in seven cases. In no case did postoperative alterations in the position of the implant lead to explantation. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the Hydrus® Microstent can effectively lower IOP even in the presence of postoperative positional variations. Automated 360° gonioscopy was found to be a useful tool to verify and document the postoperative position of the implant. Positional changes did not require device explantation in any of the cases evaluated. Full article

Feedlot cattle are frequently affected by inflammation and necrosis of the tail tips, resulting in impeded animal welfare and economic losses. In a recent study, it was demonstrated that dairy cows are also affected by different lesions of the tail tip, including alopecia, annular constrictions, crusting, scaling and swelling. Despite the frequent occurrence of these lesions, the underlying etiology and pathomechanisms are unclear to date. To gain insight into this malady, we histopathologically examined 16 tail tips of slaughtered dairy cows, representing the entire range of different lesions. While macroscopically alopecic areas were characterized by the formation of granulation tissue in the dermis with an inconspicuous epidermis, we found not only dermal granulation tissue but also purulent-necrotizing inflammation with the breakdown of the basement membrane in encrusted lesions. Interestingly, in some cases, we found areas of coagulation necrosis of the epidermal and dermal layers in the crusts. Tails with macroscopical scaling were affected by ortho- and/or parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, and, in tails with macroscopical swelling, we observed a low-protein edema of the central longitudinal connective tissue of the tail. We conclude that the observed lesions might be caused by ischemia of the skin in the distal parts of the tail. Full article

Robot artistic painting and robot calligraphy do require brush models for brushstroke simulation and painting robot control. One of the main features of the brush is its compliance, which describes the relationship between the brush footprint shape and the pressure applied to the brush. In addition, during motion, the brush footprint position lags from the brush handle position in a complicated manner. To date, the question of creating a physically correct model of these effects and choosing the best method for the model parameter calibration has not been presented in the literature. In the current paper, we derive equations of the brush contact patch motion, give their closed-form solutions, and investigate three methods for the brush model calibration: capturing brush footprints on a matte glass with a camera, painting calibration brushstrokes, and capturing a brush shape side projection with a camera. As we show, calibration brushstrokes give us primary information on brush contact patch displacement during painting, and capturing the brush side projection allows the accurate estimation of the gap from the brush tip to the center of the contact patch. Capturing brush footprints is useful for creating a brushstroke executable model. As an example, a model for a round artistic brush was created and verified in three tests, including measuring the coordinates of an angular brushstroke center line, simulating an angular brushstroke, and writing a signature using a robotic setup. Abdominal surgery is associated with high postoperative mortality and morbidity in cirrhotic patients. Despite improvements in surgical techniques, clinical management, and intensive care, the outcome could be influenced by the degree of portal hypertension, the severity of hepatopathy, or the type of surgery. Preoperative transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement, in addition to medical therapy, plays an important role in managing the complications of portal hypertension such as ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, variceal bleeding or portal vein thrombosis. To date, the improvement of post-surgery outcomes in cirrhotic patients after TIPS placement remains unclear. Only observational data existing in the literature and prospective studies are urgently needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TIPS in this setting. This review aims to outline the role of TIPS as a tool in postoperative complications reduction in cirrhotic patients, both in the setting of emergency and elective surgery. Full article

F-box proteins are a large gene family in plants, and play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. To date, a comprehensive investigation of F-box family genes in peanuts, and their expression pattern in lateral branch development has not been performed. In this study, a total of 95 F-box protein family members on 18 chromosomes, named AhFBX1-AhFBX95, were identified in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), which were classified into four groups (Group I–IV). The gene structures and protein motifs of these peanut FBX genes were highly conserved among most FBXs. We found that significant segmental duplication events occurred between wild diploid species and the allotetraploid of peanut FBXs, and observed that AhFBXs underwent strong purifying selection throughout evolution. Cis-acting elements related to development, hormones, and stresses were identified in the promoters of AhFBX genes. In silico analysis of AhFBX genes revealed expression patterns across 22 different tissues. A total of 32 genes were predominantly expressed in leaves, pistils, and the aerial gynophore tip. Additionally, 37 genes displayed tissue-specific expression specifically at the apex of both vegetative and reproductive shoots. During our analysis of transcriptome data for lateral branch development in spreading and erect varieties, namely M130 and JH5, we identified nine deferentially expressed genes (DEGs). Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) results further confirmed the expression patterns of these DEGs. These DEGs exhibited significant differences in their expression levels at different stages between M130 and JH5, suggesting their potential involvement in the regulation of lateral branch development. This systematic research offers valuable insights into the functional dissection of AhFBX genes in regulating plant growth habit in peanut. Full article

The present study focuses on performing multi-objective optimization of the cyclone separator geometry to lower the pressure losses and enhance the collection efficiency. For this, six geometrical entities, such as the main body diameter of the cyclone, the vortex finder diameter and its insertion length, the cone tip diameter, and the height of the cylindrical and conical segment, have been accounted for optimization, and the Muschelknautz method of modeling has been used as an objective function for genetic algorithms. To date, this is one of the most popular mathematical models that accurately predicts the cyclone performance, such as the pressure drop and cut-off particle size. Three cases have been selected from the Pareto fronts, and the cyclone performance is calculated using advanced closure large-eddy simulation—the results are then compared to the baseline model to evaluate the relative improvement. It has been observed that in one of the models, with merely a 2% reduction in the collection efficiency and an increase of 12% in the cut-off particle size, more than a 43% reduction in pressure drop value was obtained (an energy-efficient model). In another model, a nearly 25% increment in the collection efficiency and a reduction of 42% in the cut-off particle size with a nearly 36% increase in pressure drop value were observed (a high-efficiency model). Catheter ablation to perform pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is established as a mainstay in rhythm control of atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this review is to provide an overview of current practice and future perspectives in AF ablation. The main clinical benefit of AF ablation is the reduction of arrhythmia-related symptoms and improvement of quality of life. Catheter ablation of AF is recommended, in general, as a second-line therapy for patients with symptomatic paroxysmal or persistent AF, who have failed or are intolerant to pharmacological therapy. In selected patients with heart failure and reduced left-ventricular fraction, catheter ablation was proven to reduce all-cause mortality. Also, optimal management of comorbidities can reduce AF recurrence after AF ablation; therefore, multimodal risk assessment and therapy are mandatory. To date, the primary ablation tool in widespread use is still single-tip catheter radiofrequency (RF) based ablation. Additionally, balloon-based pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has gained prominence, especially due to its user-friendly nature and established safety and efficacy profile. So far, the cryoballoon (CB) is the most studied single-shot device. CB-based PVI is characterized by high efficiency, convincing success rates, and a beneficial safety profile. Recently, CB-PVI as a first-line therapy for AF was shown to be superior to pharmacological treatment in terms of efficacy and was shown to reduce progression from paroxysmal to persistent AF. In this context, CB-based PVI gains more and more importance as a first-line treatment choice. Non-thermal energy sources, namely pulsed-field ablation (PFA), have garnered attention due to their cardioselectivity. Although initially applied via a basket-like ablation tool, recent developments allow for point-by-point ablation, particularly with the advent of a novel lattice tip catheter. Full article

Forty-nine children who started wearing cartilage conduction hearing aids (CC-HAs) before completing elementary school (17 with bilateral hearing loss and 32 with unilateral hearing loss) were followed-up and examined. The wearing and utilization status of the CC-HA and its progress to date were evaluated. In addition, 33 participants who purchased the CC-HAs were interviewed to assess the wearing effect. Eleven of seventeen children with bilateral hearing loss and 25 of 32 children with unilateral hearing loss continued to use the CC-HAs. In terms of wearing effect, a good wearing effect was reported, even by those with unilateral hearing loss. In cases where it was difficult to wear CC-HAs stably with pasting or ear tips, it was possible to fix them stably using commercially available hair bands and eyeglass vines. In two cases, the CC-HAs were worn from infancy. With ingenuity and appropriate educational and medical support, it is possible to wear CC-HAs from infancy. Full article

Despite the daily need for people to travel on public transit buses using their wheeled mobility devices, relatively little information is available regarding the most efficacious, affordable, and independent approaches to assist passengers with keeping their mobility devices in the designated wheelchair access space. A systematic review was undertaken to summarize this literature, place it within a geographical and temporal context, appraise its quality, and establish common themes. Key academic and grey literature transportation databases and government websites searched from 1990 to May 2022 identified 33 documents, which were appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) or the Authority, Accuracy, Coverage, Objectivity, Date, Significance (AACODS) tool. Overall, the documents included were of good quality. The literature retrieved focused on the development and testing of the active containment systems favored for use in North America with a contrastingly small examination of the effectiveness of passive or semi-passive containment systems. Almost no literature was retrieved in English from European researchers documenting the use or effectiveness of rearward-facing passive systems. While tip or slide events are relatively rare among mobility device users, the effective use of containment systems is vital to minimize these. Further research is required to support transport policy makers, operators, and bus drivers to identify and correctly implement optimal containment systems to promote safety for all passengers on public buses. The Long Wavelength Array is a radio telescope array located at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in La Joya, New Mexico, well suited and situated for the observation of lightning. The array consists of 256 high-sensitivity dual polarization antennas arranged in a 100 m diameter. This paper demonstrates some of the capabilities that the array brings to the study of lightning. Once 32 or more antennas are used to image lightning radio sources, virtually every integration period longer than the impulse response of the array includes at least one identifiable lightning emitter, independent of the integration period used. The use of many antennas also allows multiple simultaneous lightning radio sources to be imaged at sub-microsecond timescales; for the flash examined, 51% of the images contained more than one lightning source. Finally, by using many antennas to image lightning sources, the array is capable of locating sources fainter than the galactic background radio noise level, yielding possibly the most sensitive radio maps of lightning to date. This incredible sensitivity enables, for the first time, the emissions originating from the positive leader tips of natural in-cloud lightning to be detected and located. The tip emission is distinctly different from needle emission and is most likely due to positive breakdown. Full article
