Metro carriages, as enclosed transport microenvironments, have been understudied regarding pollution characteristics and health risks from ACs, especially during high-temperature summers that amplify exposure. This study applied NTS techniques for the first time across three major Chengdu metro lines, systematically identifying sixteen ACs, including hazardous species such as acetophenone, benzonitrile, and benzoic acid that are often overlooked in conventional BTEX-focused monitoring. The TAC concentration reached 41.40 ± 5.20 µg/m3, with half of the compounds exhibiting significant increases during peak commuting periods. Source apportionment using diagnostic ratios and PMF identified five major contributors: carriage material emissions (36.62%), human sources (22.50%), traffic exhaust infiltration (16.67%), organic solvents (16.55%), and industrial emissions (7.66%). Although both non-cancer (HI) and cancer (TCR) risks for all population groups were below international thresholds, summer tourists experienced higher exposure than daily commuters. Notably, child tourists showed the greatest vulnerability, with a TCR of 5.83 × 10−7, far exceeding that of commuting children (1.88 × 10−7). Benzene was the dominant contributor, accounting for over 50% of HI and 70% of TCR. This study presents the first integrated NTS and quantitative risk assessment to characterise ACs in summer metro environments, revealing a broader range of hazardous compounds beyond BTEX. It quantifies population-specific risks, highlights children’s heightened vulnerability. The findings fill critical gaps in ACs exposure and provide a scientific basis for improved air quality management and pollution mitigation strategies in urban rail transit systems. Full article

Early Positive Fluid Balance Associates with Increased Mortality in Neurological Critically Ill Patients: A 10-Year Cohort Study

Background: Fluid management is a critical aspect of care for neurocritically ill patients, yet the optimal approach remains unclear. The relationship between fluid balance and clinical outcomes in these patients requires further investigation, particularly regarding the timing and volume of fluid administration. Methods: This retrospective observational study analyzed 2186 adult patients admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU) from January 2013 to December 2022. We employed a generalized additive model (GAM) with cubic spline smoothing to examine non-linear relationships between fluid balance and mortality. The maximally selected rank statistics method was used to determine the optimal cutoff value for fluid balance. Associations between fluid balance patterns and 28-day mortality were analyzed using a multivariable logistic regression model. Results: Initial analysis identified fluid balance on day 1 as the most significant predictor of mortality; patients with positive fluid balance showed a higher 28-day mortality. Non-survivors showed significantly higher fluid input throughout the 7-day observation period, particularly during the first 24 h (4444 mL vs. 3978 mL, p = 0.007). Multivariable analysis confirmed that fluid balance on day 1 remained independently associated with 28-day mortality after adjusting for confounders (adjusted odd ratio 1.705, 95% confidence interval: 1.001–2.905, p = 0.049). Additionally, the relationship between fluid input day 1 and mortality demonstrated a progressively increasing probability of 28-day mortality with higher fluid volumes. Early fluid balance, particularly during the first 24 h of ICU admission, shows a significant association with mortality in neurocritically ill patients. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the crucial importance of careful fluid management in the early phase of neurocritical care and suggest that implementation of strict fluid monitoring protocols, especially during the initial period of care, may improve patient outcomes. Background/Objectives: This single-cohort follow-up study describes the median overall survival (OS) in patients with unresectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) due to invasion of vital structures, which is under-represented in the current literature. Secondarily, subgroups were evaluated according to the type of presentation, in order to identify clinical characteristics and contribute to developing an appropriate treatment plan and managing patient’s expectations. Methods: This single-cohort observational study analysed the OS of 39 patients from the Otolaryngology Department with advanced-stage head and neck cancer with invasion of vital anatomical structures considered ineligible for surgical treatment. Secondarily, subgroups were evaluated according to type of presentation and various clinical characteristics. Results: A total of 39 patients radiologically classified as having unresectable HNSCC (i.e., unsuitable for surgical resection), with a mean age of 66.87 years, were included during a 24-month follow-up. By the end of the study, 56.4% of the patients had died. The median OS was 16.09 months. Statistically significant differences were observed when comparing human papilloma virus (HPV)-positive and -negative status and when comparing initial and recurrent tumours. Conclusions: The invasion of anatomical structures such as the skull base, internal carotid artery, and prevertebral space was associated with a marked decrease in survival, with an OS time of 16 months. This study provides valuable evidence in patients with unresectable HNSCC, highlighting tumour recurrence and HPV-negative status as important indicators of poor prognosis. Full article

The integration of a real-time image processing system using multiple webcams with a variable rate spraying system mounted on the back of an unmanned tractor presents an effective solution to the labor shortage in agriculture. This research aims to design and fabricate a low-cost, variable-rate, remote-controlled sprayer specifically for use in sugarcane fields. The primary method involves the modification of a 15-horsepower tractor, which will be equipped with a remote-control system to manage both the driving and steering functions. A foldable remote-controlled spraying arm is installed at the rear of the unmanned tractor. The system operates by using a webcam mounted on the spraying arm to capture high-angle images above the sugarcane canopy. These images are recorded and processed, and the data is relayed to the spraying control system. As a result, chemicals can be sprayed on the sugarcane accurately and efficiently based on the insights gained from image processing. Tests were conducted at various nozzle heights of 0.25 m, 0.5 m, and 0.75 m. The average system efficiency was found to be 85.30% at a pressure of 1 bar, with a chemical spraying rate of 36 L per hour and a working capacity of 0.975 hectares per hour. The energy consumption recorded was 0.161 kWh, while fuel consumption was measured at 6.807 L per hour. In conclusion, the development of the remote-controlled variable rate sprayer mounted on an unmanned tractor enables immediate and precise chemical application through remote control. This results in high-precision spraying and uniform distribution, ultimately leading to cost savings, particularly by allowing for adjustments in nozzle height from a minimum of 0.25 m to a maximum of 0.75 m from the target. Understanding how prey and predator species partition activity patterns across time and space is essential for elucidating behavioral adaptation and ecological coexistence. In this study, we examined the diel and seasonal activity rhythms of two sympatric rodent species—Rhombomys opimus (Great gerbil) and Meriones meridianus (Midday gerbil)—and their primary predators, Otocolobus manul (Pallas’s cat) and Vulpes vulpes (Red fox), in a desert-steppe ecosystem on the northern slopes of the Qilian Mountains, China. Using over 8000 camera trap days and kernel density estimation, we quantified their activity intensity and spatiotemporal overlap. The two rodent species showed clear temporal niche differentiation but differed in their synchrony with predators. R. opimus exhibited a unimodal diurnal rhythm with spring activity peaks, while M. meridianus showed stable nocturnal activity with a distinct autumn peak. Notably, O. manul adjusted its activity pattern to partially align with that of R. opimus, whereas V. vulpes maintained a crepuscular–nocturnal rhythm overlapping more closely with that of M. meridianus. Despite distinct temporal rhythms, both rodent species shared high spatial overlap with their predators (overlap index OI = 0.64–0.83). These findings suggest that temporal partitioning may reduce predation risk for R. opimus, while M. meridianus co-occurs more extensively with its predators. Our results highlight the ecological role of native carnivores in rodent population dynamics and support their potential use in biodiversity-friendly rodent management strategies under arid grassland conditions. Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyze the role of interdisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists in patient care. For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases covering the period from 2000 to 2025. Sixty-two peer-reviewed publications meeting the methodological and thematic criteria were included in the analysis, including original studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and case reports. The results indicate significant correlations between disease activity and the severity of periodontal and microbiological changes, while effective endocrine treatment only results in the partial regression of morphological changes. Particular attention was given to the role of the dentist in recognizing the early symptoms of the disease, planning prosthetic and surgical treatment, and monitoring therapy-related complications. Interdisciplinary collaboration models, including integrated clinics and co-managed care, were also described as optimal systemic solutions for improving treatment quality. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: there is a need for the permanent integration of dentistry into the standard of interdisciplinary care for patients with acromegaly, in both diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions. Increasing awareness among dentists and developing integrated collaboration models may reduce the time to diagnosis, improve patients’ quality of life, and enable the more effective management of craniofacial complications in the course of this rare disease. Repurposing a Lipid-Lowering Agent to Inhibit TNBC Growth Through Cell Cycle Arrest

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive and therapeutically challenging subtype of breast cancer due to its lack of estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2 (Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) expression, which severely limits available treatment options. Recently, Simvastatin—a widely used HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A) reductase inhibitor for hyperlipidemia—has garnered interest for its potential anticancer effects. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Simvastatin in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The results demonstrate that Simvastatin significantly inhibits the proliferation of TNBC cells, particularly MDA-MB-231, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Mechanistically, Simvastatin primarily induces G1 phase cell cycle arrest to exert its antiproliferative effects, with no significant evidence of apoptosis or necrosis. These findings support the potential repositioning of Simvastatin as a therapeutic agent to suppress TNBC cell growth. Further analysis shows that Simvastatin downregulates cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), a key regulator of the G1/S cell cycle transition and a known marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer. These findings highlight a novel, apoptosis-independent mechanism of Simvastatin’s anticancer action in TNBC. Importantly, given that many breast cancer patients also suffer from hyperlipidemia, Simvastatin offers dual therapeutic benefits—managing both lipid metabolism and tumor cell proliferation. Thus, Simvastatin holds promise as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of TNBC and warrants further clinical investigation. Full article

Modification of Vegetation Structure and Composition to Reduce Wildfire Risk on a High Voltage Transmission Line

The Mapleton Falls National Park transmission line corridor in Queensland, Australia, has received a number of vegetation management treatments over the last decade to maintain and protect the infrastructure and to ensure continuous electricity supply. Recent treatments have included ‘mega-mulching’ (mechanical mastication of vegetation to a mulch layer) in 2020 and targeted herbicide treatment of woody vegetation, with the aim of reducing vegetation height by encouraging a native herbaceous groundcover beneath the transmission lines. We measured vegetation structure (cover and height) and composition (species presence in 15 × 2 m plots), at 12 transects, 90 m in length on the transmission line corridor, to determine if management goals were being achieved and to determine how the vegetation and fire hazard (based on the overall fuel hazard assessment method) varied among the treated corridor, the forest edge environment, and the natural forest. The results showed that vegetation structure and composition in the treated zones had been modified to a state where herbaceous plant species were dominant; there was a significantly (p < 0.05) higher native grass cover and cover of herbs, sedges, and ferns in the treated zones, and a lower cover of trees and tall woody plants (>1 m in height) in these areas. For example, mean native grass cover and the cover of herbs and sedges in the treated areas was 10.2 and 2.8 times higher, respectively, than in the natural forest. The changes in the vegetation structure (particularly removal of tall woody vegetation) resulted in a lower overall fuel hazard in the treated zones, relative to the edge zones and natural forest. The overall fuel hazard was classified as ‘high’ in 83% of the transects in the treated areas, but it was classified as ‘extreme’ in 75% of the transects in the adjacent forest zone. Importantly, there were few introduced species recorded. The results suggest that fuel management has been successful in reducing wildfire risk in the transmission corridor. Temporal monitoring is recommended to determine the frequency of ongoing fuel management. Full article

Achieving sustainable energy goals requires efficient integration of renewables like wind energy. Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine systems (WTSs) operate efficiently across a range of speeds, making them well-suited for modern renewable energy systems. However, sudden wind speed variations can cause power oscillations, rotor speed fluctuations, and voltage instability. Traditional proportional–integral (PI) controllers struggle with such nonlinear, rapidly changing scenarios. A control approach utilizing support vector regression (SVR) is proposed for the DFIG wind turbine system. The SVR controller manages both active and reactive power by simultaneously controlling the rotor- and grid-side converters (RSC and GSC). Simulations under a sudden wind speed variation from 10 to 12 m per second show the SVR approach reduces settling time significantly (up to 70.3%), suppresses oscillations in rotor speed, torque, and power output, and maintains over 97% DC-link voltage stability. These improvements enhance power quality, reliability, and system performance, demonstrating the SVR controller’s superiority over conventional PI methods for variable-speed wind energy systems. This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-precision vehicle detection and classification system for toll stations on national highways in Colombia, leveraging LiDAR-based 3D point cloud processing and supervised machine learning. The system integrates a multi-sensor architecture, including a LiDAR scanner, high-resolution cameras, and Doppler radars, with an embedded computing platform for real-time processing and on-site inference. The methodology covers data preprocessing, feature extraction, descriptor encoding, and classification using Support Vector Machines. The system supports eight vehicular categories established by national regulations, which present significant challenges due to the need to differentiate categories by axle count, the presence of lifted axles, and vehicle usage. These distinctions affect toll fees and require a classification strategy beyond geometric profiling. The system achieves 89.9% overall classification accuracy, including 96.2% for light vehicles and 99.0% for vehicles with three or more axles. It also incorporates license plate recognition for complete vehicle traceability. The system was deployed at an operational toll station and has run continuously under real traffic and environmental conditions for over eighteen months. This framework represents a robust, scalable, and strategic technological component within Intelligent Transportation Systems and contributes to data-driven decision-making for road management and toll operations. Background/Objectives: Penetrating intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) are ocular emergencies, often leading to preventable vision loss. This case report highlights a unique presentation of a work-related penetrating IOFB that mimicked a golden hypopyon. Methods: A 35-year-old male presented to the emergency department with sudden-onset pain and vision loss in the left eye while he was cutting a tree with metallic scissors. He had a visual acuity of 20/30 in the right eye and counting fingers in the left eye. A dilated slit-lamp examination and CT scan confirmed the presence of a 6–8 mm metallic IOFB in the anterior chamber, with no involvement of the lens or the posterior segment. Surgical removal was performed. Results: The metallic IOFB was removed surgically with IOFB forceps using a single paracentesis. The patient reported resolving pain and regained baseline visual acuity of 20/20 postoperatively, which remained stable at one-month follow-up. Conclusions: This case illustrates the successful surgical management of a penetrating metallic IOFB with a unique presentation mimicking a hypopyon. Emphasis on unique presentations of IOFBs can aid in timely management, ultimately reducing the risk of complications. Full article

Effects of Water Use Efficiency Combined with Advancements in Nitrogen and Soil Water Management for Sustainable Agriculture in the Loess Plateau, China

In China’s Loess Plateau, sustainable agricultural end products are affected by an insufficiency of water resources. Rising crop water use efficiency (WUE) through field management pattern improvement is a crucial plan of action to address this issue. However, there is no agreement among researchers on the most appropriate field management practices regarding WUE, which requires further integrated quantitative analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis by quantifying the effect of agricultural practices surrounding nitrogen (N) fertilizer management. The two experimental cultivars were Yunhan–20410 and Yunhan–618. The subplots included nitrogen 0 kg·ha−1 (N0), 90 kg·ha−1 (N90), 180 kg·ha−1 (N180), 210 kg·ha−1 (N210), and 240 kg·ha−1 (N240). Our results show that higher N rates (up to N210) enhanced water consumption during the node-flowering and flowering-maturity time periods. YH–618 showed higher water use during the sowing–greening and node-flowering periods but decreased use during the greening-node and flowering-maturity periods compared to YH–20410. The N210 treatment under YH–618 maximized water use efficiency (WUE). Increased N rates (N180–N210) decreased covering temperatures (Tmax, Tmin, Taver) during flowering, increasing the level of grain filling. Spike numbers rose with N application, with an off-peak at N210 for strong-gluten wheat. The 1000-grain weight was at first enhanced but decreased at the far end of N180–N210. YH–618 with N210 achieved a harvest index (HI) similar to that of YH–20410 with N180, while excessive N (N240) or water reduced the HI. Dry matter accumulation increased up to N210, resulting in earlier stabilization. Soil water consumption from wintering to jointing was strongly correlated with pre-flowering dry matter biological process and yield, while jointing–flowering water use was linked to post-flowering dry matter and spike numbers. Post-flowering dry matter accumulation was critical for yield, whereas spike numbers positively impacted yield but negatively affected 1000-grain weight. In conclusion, our results provide evidence for determining suitable integrated agricultural establishment strategies to ensure efficient water use and sustainable production in the Loess Plateau region. Background/Objectives: Historically, echocardiographic imaging of the right heart has been challenging because its abnormal geometry is not conducive to reproducible anatomical and functional assessment. With the development of advanced echocardiographic techniques, it is now possible to complete an integrated assessment of the right heart that has fewer assumptions, resulting in increased accuracy and precision. Echocardiography continues to be the first-line imaging modality for diagnostic analysis and the management of acute and chronic right heart failure because of its portability, versatility, and affordability compared to cardiac computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear scintigraphy, and positron emission tomography. Virtually all echocardiographic parameters have been well-validated and have demonstrated prognostic significance. The goal of this narrative review of the echocardiographic parameters of the right heart chambers and hemodynamic alterations associated with right ventricular dysfunction is to present information that must be acquired during each examination to deliver a comprehensive assessment of the right heart and to discuss their clinical significance in right heart failure. Methods: Using a literature search in the PubMed database from 1985 to 2025 and the Cochrane database, which included but was not limited to terminology that are descriptive of right heart anatomy and function, disease states involving acute and chronic right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, and the application of conventional and advanced echocardiographic modalities that strive to elucidate the pathophysiology of right heart failure, we reviewed randomized control trials, observational retrospective and prospective cohort studies, societal guidelines, and systematic review articles. Conclusions: In addition to the conventional 2-dimensional echocardiography and color, spectral, and tissue Doppler measurements, a contemporary echocardiographic assessment of a patient with suspected or proven right heart failure must include 3-dimensional echocardiographic-derived measurements, speckle-tracking echocardiography strain analysis, and hemodynamics parameters to not only characterize the right heart anatomy but to also determine the underlying pathophysiology of right heart failure. Complete and point-of-care echocardiography is available in virtually all clinical settings for routine care, but this imaging tool is particularly indispensable in the emergency department, intensive care units, and operating room, where it can provide an immediate assessment of right ventricular function and associated hemodynamic changes to assist with real-time management decisions. Honey bees are essential pollinators for the ecosystem and food crops. However, their health and survival face threats from both biotic and abiotic stresses. Fungi, microsporidia, and bacteria might significantly contribute to colony losses. Therefore, rapid and sensitive diagnostic tools are crucial for effective disease management. In this study, molecular assays were developed to quickly and efficiently detect the main honey bee pathogens: Nosema ceranae, Aspergillus flavus, Paenibacillus larvae, and Black queen cell virus. In this context, new primer pairs were designed for use in quantitative Real-time PCR (qPCR) reactions. Various protocols for extracting total nucleic acids from bee tissues were tested, indicating a CTAB-based protocol as the most efficient and cost-effective. Furthermore, excluding the head of the bee from the extraction, better results were obtained in terms of quantity and purity of extracted nucleic acids. These assays showed high specificity and sensitivity, detecting up to 250 fg of N. ceranae, 25 fg of P. larvae, and 2.5 pg of A. flavus DNA, and 5 pg of BQCV cDNA, without interference from bee DNA. These qPCR assays allowed pathogen detection within 3 h and at early stages of infection, supporting timely and efficient management interventions. Full article

We studied Galápagos barn owls on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos Archipelago. We collected and analyzed pellets to determine diet composition. Barn-owl diet consisted—in terms of biomass—of ~89% rodents and ~10% insects. Bird remains occurred in 1% of the pellets. Foraging was studied with data loggers, a method not previously applied to the study of Galápagos barn owls. Owls rested during the day in natural and human-built roosts such as lava holes, trees, or huts. Night-time foraging was characterized by periods during which the bird moved and periods during which the bird stayed within one place, with the latter amounting to ~56% of the time away from the day roost. Birds began foraging shortly after sunset and returned to their day roost before sunrise. The duration of foraging was approximately 11 h per night. Foraging areas were small (median value: 0.28 km2). Although our data demonstrate a continued presence of the subspecies, we regard the situation for this subspecies as labile, as multiple threats, such as road kills, poisoning, and intentional killing by farmers, have increased recently, and suggest the development of a management plan to improve its conservation.
