The news framing of assisted death in Portugal and the United Kingdom from 2016 to 2024 was analyzed across two dimensions. The first examined the overall frames through source positions and occupations. The second observed argumentative structures by coding argument characteristics: manifestation, origin, level, and evaluation. A total of 7464 structures were identified from 1731 published stories in Expresso, Público, The Guardian, and The Telegraph. The research utilized a methodological framework based on framing theory, creating direct connections between frame analysis and argumentative structures to improve the validity of valence and thematic framing mechanisms. The findings indicated significant differences between countries. The Portuguese news media showed a marked inclination to present concentrated opposing arguments with a higher argumentative density. In contrast, British newspapers displayed a greater diversity of arguments in favor of assisted death, along with a more cohesive representation among pro-assisted death sources. Three distinct argumentative profiles were identified, each showing different divisions between Portugal and the UK. These results reveal that argumentative structures in assisted death coverage reflect deeper systemic values and news media structures, positioning these quality newspapers as influential actors in representing arguments about moral legitimacy around bioethical issues. The study makes a valuable contribution by offering a comprehensive understanding of how these four newspapers frame arguments about assisted death while proposing an innovative analytical model applicable to comparative studies of other news media. Background: Food insecurity among college students is a multidimensional challenge shaped by individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy factors. Although many campuses require or provide meal plans, students may experience food insecurity when barriers related to agency (choice and autonomy), utilization (nutrition security), and availability persist. This study explored how undergraduate students at a private, urban U.S. university experience and navigate the multiple dimensions of food insecurity. Methods: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews via Zoom between December 2024 and January 2025 with n = 22 undergraduate students recruited based on food security status, determined by a Fall 2024 longitudinal survey using the USDA Six-Item Short Form. Transcripts were double-coded by trained research assistants in ATLAS.ti using an inductive codebook. Thematic analyses followed a phronetic, iterative approach, organizing findings within a socio-ecological determinants framework and comparing themes by food security status. Results: We identified nine themes across four domains (individual, interpersonal, institutional and community, and political). At the individual level, constrained personal resources for groceries and cooking, time scarcity leading to skipped meals, and health impacts that detracted from academics emerged as key themes. Interpersonally, reliable family financial support was protective and informal support from peers/coaches filled gaps sporadically for some. At the institutional and community level, dining hall hours misaligned with student schedules, perceived limited variety and nutrition quality reduced food agency and utilization, and transportation impeded use of the sole grocery partner accepting university meal plan benefits. Notably, meal plans including unlimited meal swipes provided stable access but did not guarantee food security when food agency and utilization barriers persisted. Many students relied on campus events for free food; formal assistance (e.g., food pantry) was largely underused. At the policy level, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) awareness and enrollment was limited among our sample. Conclusions: Meal plan access alone is insufficient to ensure food security. Campus strategies should extend beyond access to prioritize flexibility, variety, and alignment with students’ schedules and preferences, while strengthening communication and eligibility support for external benefits. Future work should design and evaluate interventions that integrate all dimensions of food security and address institutional policies affecting students’ basic needs. Full article

Background: The Rohingya refugee crisis is one of the largest humanitarian emergencies of the 21st century, with nearly one million Rohingya residing in overcrowded camps in southern Bangladesh. Women and children face the greatest vulnerabilities, including inadequate access to education and healthcare, which exacerbates their risks and limits opportunities for personal and community development. While international organizations continue to provide aid, resources remain insufficient, particularly in maternal and child healthcare, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable interventions. Objectives: The Hope Foundation for Women and Children in Bangladesh launched a pilot project for the Health Assistant Training (HAT) program to address critical gaps in healthcare and education for the Rohingya community. This nine-month training program equips young Rohingya women with essential knowledge and skills to support maternal health services in both clinical and community settings. Design: We conducted a qualitative evaluation of the HAT Program to explore its acceptance and anticipated benefits for both participants and the community. Methods: The research team used semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and field observations to explore the HAT Program’s impact on young Rohingya women and their community. They analyzed data through thematic analysis, developing a coding framework and identifying key themes to uncover patterns and insights. Results: The results were categorized into four themes: (1) community acceptance of the HAT Program, (2) the HAT Program’s impact on the health assistant trainees, (3) the impact of the HAT Program on the community, and (4) the potential ways to expand the HAT Program. Conclusions: This research underscores the program’s impact on improving healthcare access, enhancing women’s empowerment, and promoting community resilience. By situating this initiative within the broader context of refugee health, education, and capacity-building, this research highlights the HAT program’s potential as a replicable model in Bangladesh and in other humanitarian settings. Background: Integrity, encompassing honesty, accountability, and ethical conduct, is a cornerstone of the dental profession, essential for patient trust and safety. Despite its importance, academic dishonesty remains a pervasive issue in dental education globally. This review examines the prevalence, causes, and long-term career implications of academic dishonesty in dental education and explores institutional strategies to cultivate a culture of integrity. Method: The study was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify studies published between 1970 and 2025 on academic dishonesty in dental education. Search terms included dental students, cheating, plagiarism, and clinical falsification. Eligible studies reported prevalence, drivers, or consequences of dishonest behaviors. Data were extracted and thematically synthesized to highlight common patterns and professional implications. Results: Self-reported data indicate alarmingly high rates of cheating among dental students, ranging from 43% to over 90%. Common forms include exam fraud, plagiarism, and the falsification of clinical records. Key drivers include intense academic pressure, competitive environments, and a perception of weak enforcement. Such behaviors are not merely academic violations—they have profound professional consequences. A history of academic dishonesty can damage a student’s reputation, hinder licensure and credentialing processes, and limit postgraduate opportunities. Crucially, studies indicate that unethical behavior in school can normalize dishonesty, predicting a higher likelihood of future professional misconduct, such as insurance fraud or malpractice, thereby jeopardizing patient care and public trust. Conclusions: Academic integrity is a critical predictor of professional ethical conduct. Dental schools must move beyond punitive policies to implement proactive, multi-faceted approaches. This includes integrating comprehensive ethics curricula, fostering reflective practice, promoting faculty role modeling, and empowering student-led initiatives to uphold honor codes. Cultivating an unwavering culture of integrity is essential not only for academic success but for developing trustworthy practitioners committed to lifelong ethical patient care. Full article

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are crucial for marine ecosystems, but they often pose significant challenges for the local fishing communities that rely on these ecosystems for their livelihoods. Identifying approaches that maintain ecological integrity while improving community livelihoods and well-being has become a central issue in marine sustainability. This study investigates the adaptive livelihood strategies of a community on Qi’ao Island, located in China’s Pearl River Estuary, which has gradually transitioned from traditional fisheries to tourism-induced livelihoods. Based on Actor–network theory (ANT), we developed a multi-level approach to examine interactions between human and non-human actors, institutions, and policies during livelihood adaptation. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining semi-structured interviews (n = 47), extended field observation, and policy analysis. Computational text analysis techniques included word frequency analysis, sentiment analysis, and co-occurrence network analysis using Python 3.8. These were integrated with thematic analysis and coding conducted in NVivo 15. This study demonstrates that the sustainability of tourism-based livelihood adaptation depends on equitable benefit sharing, flexible governance, and sustained community participation. Theoretically, this research extends livelihood studies by demonstrating how ANT captures the relational and processual dynamics of adaptation. Practically, it offers policy-relevant insights for designing adaptive and participatory governance strategies that reconcile conservation objectives with community well-being in MPAs. Full article

Informal learning increasingly occurs in digital environments, where citizens access, evaluate and apply knowledge outside of formal education. In the context of disaster preparedness, such informal learning is crucial for promoting individual and collective self-protection. This study examines how disaster preparedness knowledge is represented in German-language online resources, and how these materials can be categorised from an adult education perspective. An exploratory mixed-methods design combining expert-guided sampling, a qualitatively developed coding scheme, large-scale web scraping and AI-assisted classification was employed. A total of 7305 webpages were analysed in terms of actor type, topic, media format, and didactic design. The findings suggest that government and commercial organisations dominate the online preparedness landscape, with limited contributions from civil society and individuals. Thematically, most resources focus on general preventive measures and checklists, whereas scenario-specific and procedural content is underrepresented. Didactically rich and interactive formats are rare, with most materials relying on static, text-based communication. From an adult education perspective, these results suggest a gap between raising awareness and active learning. While online resources offer easy access to preparedness knowledge, they rarely facilitate deeper understanding, participation or collaborative learning. Methodologically, the study illustrates how AI-assisted analysis can combine qualitative interpretive depth with computational scalability in educational research. Full article

To maintain power system stability and supply quality when integrating doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion systems (DFIG-WECSs), regulators regularly update grid codes specifying low voltage ride-through (LVRT) requirements. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on the use of STATCOMs to enhance LVRT capability in DFIG-WECSs. Objectives included a structured literature search, bibliographic analysis, thematic synthesis, trend identification, and proposing future research directions. A PRISMA-based methodology guided the review, utilising PRISMA 2020 for Abstracts in the development of the abstract. The final search was conducted on Scopus (31 March 2025). Eligible studies were primary research in English (2009–2014) where STATCOM was central to LVRT enhancement; exclusions included non-English studies, duplicates, reviews, and studies without a STATCOM focus. Quality was assessed using an adapted Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool. No automation or machine learning tools were used. Thirty-eight studies met the criteria and were synthesised under four themes: operational contexts, STATCOM-based schemes, control strategies, and optimisation techniques. Unlike prior reviews, this study critically evaluates merits, limitations, and practical challenges. Trend analysis shows evolution from hardware-based fault survival strategies to advanced optimisation and coordinated control schemes, emphasising holistic grid stability and renewable integration. Identified gaps include cyber-physical security, techno-economic assessments, and multi-objective optimisation. Actionable research directions are proposed. By combining technical evaluation with systematic trend analysis, this review clarifies the state of STATCOM-assisted LVRT strategies and outlines pathways for future innovation in DFIG-WECS integration. Background: Low peak bone mass (PBM) is a major contributor to later osteoporosis risk. This study sought to understand young people’s knowledge of factors associated with bone health. Methods: Young people in Aotearoa New Zealand were approached. Eight focus groups (26 participants in total, aged 11 to 17 years) were conducted using a semi-structured approach with open-ended questions and prompts. Transcripts were thematically coded using an inductive content analysis approach. Results: Knowledge of factors associated with good bone health was limited. There was a general awareness of the positive and negative impacts of many lifestyle behaviours on health generally, but not specifically PBM. Dairy intake was commonly mentioned as being beneficial for bone health. Some participants reported potential benefits of sport, but most did not know that weight bearing activity specifically was beneficial. Conclusions: Knowledge of osteoporosis and lifestyle factors that impact PBM was limited. Educational interventions involving promotion of bone health knowledge and supporting weight bearing physical activity in adolescents may be an important contributor to public health strategies. Effective communication is essential for professional practice, yet medical curricula rarely incorporate systematic, performance-based training. The Sell Yourself!—Presentation Techniques course was developed to address this gap through a two-day, practice-oriented program integrating rhetorical training, evolutionary psychology, and structured peer feedback. We examined anonymized institutional evaluations from 450 medical students using descriptive statistics and combined inductive–deductive thematic and content coding to gauge the perceived educational utility of the course. The course received a mean satisfaction rating of 9.6/10, with approximately 74% of students assigning the maximum score. Inductive analysis identified interactivity (143 mentions), practical usefulness (76), feedback and improvement (75), positive atmosphere (51), instructor quality (47), and multimedia examples (37) as key strengths, while critiques primarily concerned breaks and scheduling (62), course length and intensity (59), and smaller concerns regarding feedback processes, content structure, and technical issues. Deductive coding indicated perceived improvements across five predefined dimensions: increased confidence, rhetorical fluency, feedback quality, peer recognition, and cultural inclusivity. Structured rhetorical training appears to be well received by learners and may provide a feasible model for embedding communication competence in medical education. These findings also offer a transferable template for integrating performance-based communication training into other programs. However, conclusions are limited by reliance on self-reported perceptions and the absence of a control group or direct assessment of applied communication outcomes. Full article

Background: Integrating palliative care (PC) into primary health care (PHC) is essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage and reducing avoidable suffering. Despite global progress in PC development, the extent to which PC is effectively embedded within PHC systems remains unclear, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Colombia illustrates this gap, with an advanced legal framework but persistent territorial inequities. This study explored how national experts conceptualize PC integration into PHC to inform the development of context-sensitive indicators. Methods: A directed thematic analysis was conducted using qualitative comments from a modified Delphi process (pre-Delphi, Round 1, Round 2). Coding was guided by the WHO model for PC development and the WHO–UNICEF Operational Framework for PHC, combining deductive and inductive approaches to identify recurrent themes. Results: A total of 230 qualitative comments from experts in PC, PHC, and public health were analyzed. Experts described integration as the alignment of policy, education, service delivery, and community participation within PHC structures. They emphasized that laws and training programs alone are insufficient; integration depends on implementation capacity, equitable access, and locally responsive systems. Rural areas were identified as facing the greatest barriers, including limited trained staff, restricted medicine availability, and weak referral pathways. Conclusions: Experts understood PC integration into PHC as a dynamic and ethical process linking system design with human experience. Strengthening equity, workforce preparation, and community engagement is essential to translate policy into practice and to develop meaningful indicators for health system improvement. Full article

This qualitative single-case study examines how spirituality promotes mental health within a stigmatized occupation by analyzing an in-depth interview with “Perla,” a 62-year-old Mexican woman with decades of experience in sex work. Guided by Virginia Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST), specifically the Self-Mandala and Iceberg Metaphor, we conceptualize spirituality as a universal human dimension of meaning, moral orientation, and relational connection that may be expressed within or beyond formal religion. Narrative thematic analysis identifies processes through which Perla cultivates congruence (alignment of inner experience and outward conduct), safeguards dignity, and sustains hope amid systemic constraints. Her Catholic practices (prayer, ritual boundaries regarding Eucharist) coexist with a broader spiritual agency that supports self-worth, emotional regulation, boundary-setting, and coherent identity, factors associated with mental well-being. Interdisciplinary implications bridge marriage and family therapy, psychology, pastoral care, and cultural studies. Clinically, we translate Satir’s constructs (yearnings, perceptions, expectations, coping stances) into practical assessment and intervention steps that can be applied in secular settings without religious presuppositions. Analytic rigor was supported through reflective memoing, a structured three-level coding process, constant comparison, and verification by a second coder. The case challenges pathologizing frames of sex workers by demonstrating how spirituality can function as a protective, growth-oriented resource that fosters agency and moral coherence. Full article

Addressing a gap in non-STEM education research—where little is known about how social science students experience technical literacy interventions—we draw on qualitative data from group exam reflections (n = 14) and mid-semester survey responses (n = 7). Using an inductive thematic analysis, the study investigates how students perceived, navigated, and made sense of foundational coding activities. Four themes emerged: (1) Perceived value of coding and technical literacy, (2) Hidden gaps in foundational technical literacy, (3) AI as a cognitive and pedagogical scaffold and (4) Emerging technical competence and identity formation. Framed within theories of digital literacy and constructivist learning, the findings show how limited, scaffolded exposure to web development can shift students from digital consumption toward novice digital production. The study contributes empirical insight into how coding can be meaningfully embedded within business school curricula and offers pedagogical recommendations for designing accessible technical literacy interventions. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, and new technologies such as Fully Immersive Virtual Reality (FIVR) are being explored to promote functional recovery as well as optimize rehabilitation outcomes. The aim of the present study was to explore Greek OTs’ perspectives on the use of FIVR in rehabilitation of the upper limb after stroke. Two focus groups took place with six experienced OTs, who were recruited from diverse clinical settings across Greece. The interviews were facilitated using a semi-structured guide and inductively coded using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-stage process. Six theme-rich findings were elicited. Therapists identified FIVR’s potential to enable patient involvement, motivation, and recovery of function through the use of immersion and feedback-based practice. They reported significant barriers, however, in terms of technical challenges, safety issues, and costly equipment. OTs also highlighted the fact that occupation-based, culturally sensitive task design is central to ensuring ecological validity and transfer to naturalistic settings. There is a high potential for FIVR in stroke rehabilitation, but it requires user-centered design, cultural adaptation, adequate training, and systemic support towards long-term implementation. Introduction: Motorized components on power wheelchairs (PWC) enable repositioning to pre-programmed positions (e.g., tilt, leg support, verticalization) to prevent prolonged static positions. Smart technologies can track positioning information and give feedback according to clinical recommendations and personal goals. This study aimed to explore users’ and clinicians’ perceptions of an intelligent dynamic seating (IDS) system prototype comprising a PWC with motorized multi-components connected to a web interface. Methods: A purposive sample of six PWC users and eight clinicians were recruited in this exploratory descriptive qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews included viewing a video of the IDS and images of the web interface. Interviews were transcribed, deductively coded, and thematically analyzed using a conceptual model for evaluating eHealth interventions. Results: Clinicians found the IDS system intuitive to use, customizable, relevant in terms of positioning and clinical recommendations, and timesaving. Powered wheelchair users perceived benefits that could motivate behavioural change, autonomy, health, and inclusion. Concerns related to familiarity with complex technology, funding, cognitive requirements, and technical and health risks were raised. Conclusion: The results inform improvements for the integration of the IDS in clinical practice to respond to the positioning needs of PWC users. Full article

Russia’s 2022 invasion precipitated one of Europe’s largest episodes of forced academic mobility, compelling universities to shift from emergency access to durable inclusion. This article investigates how Ukrainian students are integrated into Romanian higher education through a qualitative case study at Ovidius University of Constanta, undertaken within the Erasmus+ EIUS project. We analysed a participatory focus-group workshop (“Building Bridges,” May 2024) involving 72 participants (15 Ukrainian students, 31 Romanian students, 26 academic staff). Transcripts were coded via reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through a SWOT lens to connect lived experience with institutional strategy. Findings indicate that integration generates tangible pedagogical and social value—diversity enriches coursework, empathy strengthens peer collaboration, and exposure to multilingual classrooms catalyses instructional innovation. Yet systemic fragilities persist: language anxiety (“translation silence”), fragmented support pathways, and limited access to counselling shift emotional labour onto faculty and peers. Opportunities cluster around Erasmus+ infrastructures, bilingual materials, and co-created projects that transform access into participation; threats include latent prejudice, social isolation, compassion fatigue, and policy discontinuity as crisis attention wanes. We advance the concept of institutionalised solidarity—a multi-level inclusion model that couples emotional infrastructures (mentoring, trauma-informed pedagogy, counselling) with organizational infrastructures (integration offices, linguistic scaffolding, adaptive assessment). The study contributes an empirically grounded framework for moving from humanitarian reaction to sustainable academic inclusion and offers actionable guidance for European universities seeking resilience under protracted disruption.
