Outdoor air pollution poses a major global health risk, yet monitoring remains insufficient, especially in regions with limited infrastructure. Solar-powered monitors could allow for increased coverage in regions lacking robust connectivity. However, reliable sample collection can be challenging with these systems due to extreme temperatures and insufficient solar energy. Proper planning can help overcome these challenges. Air Sampler Solar and Thermal Optimization for Reliable Monitoring (Air-STORM) is an open-source tool that uses meteorological and solar radiation data to identify temperature and solar charging risks for air pollution monitors based on the target deployment area. The model was validated experimentally, and its utility was demonstrated through illustrative case studies. Air-STORM simulations can be customized for specific locations, seasons, and monitor configurations. This capability enables the early detection of potential sampling risks and provides opportunities to optimize monitor design, proactively mitigate temperature and power failures, and increase the likelihood of successful sample collection. Ultimately, improving sampling success will help increase the availability of high-quality outdoor air pollution data necessary to reduce global air pollution exposure. Full article

Healthy soils are an essential ingredient of land systems and ongoing global change. Urbanization as a global change process often works through the lens of urban planning, which involves urban agriculture, urban greening, and leveraging nature-based solutions to promote resilient cities. Yet, urbanization frequently leads to soil erosion. Despite recognition of this tension, the rate at which the urban growth boundary accelerates soil erosion above natural background levels has not yet been determined. Our goal here is to provide a first broad estimate of urbanization’s impact of soil erosion. By combining data on modern erosion levels with techniques for estimating long-term natural erosion rates through cosmogenic nuclide 10Be analysis, we modeled the impact of urbanization on erosion across a range of cities in different global climates, revealing an acceleration of soil erosion ~7–19x in environments with mean annual precipitation <1500 mm; growth in wetter urban centers accelerated soil erosion ~23–72x. We tested our statistical model by comparing natural erosion rates to decades of monitoring soil erosion on the margins of Phoenix, USA. A century-long expansion of Phoenix accelerated soil erosion by ~12x, an estimate that is roughly at the mid-point of model projections for drier global cities. In addition to urban planning implications of being able to establish a baseline target of natural rates of soil erosion, our findings support the urban cycle of soil erosion theory for the two USA National Science Foundation urban long-term ecological research areas of Baltimore and Phoenix. As typical environmental hormones, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a global environmental health issue of high concern due to their property of interfering with the endocrine systems of organisms. As a commonly used substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol E (BPE) has been frequently detected in environmental matrices such as soil and water in recent years. Existing research has unveiled the developmental and reproductive toxicity of BPE; however, only one in vitro cellular experiment has preliminarily indicated potential neurotoxic risks, with its underlying mechanisms remaining largely unelucidated in the current literature. Potential toxic mechanisms and action targets of BPE were predicted using the zebrafish model via network toxicology and molecular docking, with RT-qPCRs being simultaneously applied to uncover neurotoxic effects and associated mechanisms of BPE. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the frequency of embryonic spontaneous movements was observed in zebrafish at exposure concentrations ≥ 0.01 mg/L. At 72 hpf and 144 hpf, the larval body length began to shorten significantly from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L, respectively (p < 0.01), accompanied by a reduced neuronal fluorescence intensity and a shortened neural axon length (p < 0.01). By 144 hpf, the motor behavior in zebrafish larvae was inhibited. Through network toxicology and molecular docking, HSP90AB1 was identified as the core target, with the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway determined to be the primary route through which BPE induces neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae. BPE induces neuronal apoptosis and disrupts neurodevelopment by inhibiting the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway, ultimately suppressing the larval motor behavior. To further validate the experimental outcomes, we measured the expression levels of genes associated with neurodevelopment (elavl3, mbp, gap43, syn2a), serotonergic synaptic signaling (5-ht1ar, 5-ht2ar), the cGMP/PKG pathway (nos3), and apoptosis (caspase-3, caspase-9). These results offer crucial theoretical underpinnings for evaluating the ecological risks of BPE and developing environmental management plans, as well as crucial evidence for a thorough comprehension of the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPE on neurodevelopment in zebrafish larvae. Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by excessive parathyroid hormone production, typically due to adenomas, hyperplasia, or carcinoma. Preoperative imaging plays a critical role in guiding surgical planning, particularly in selecting patients for minimally invasive procedures. While first-line imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy, are standard, advanced second-line imaging modalities like 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT (FCH-PET) and four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) have emerged as valuable tools when initial diagnostics are inconclusive. Methods: This article provides an updated review and recommendations of the role of these advanced imaging techniques in localizing parathyroid adenomas. Results: FCH-PET has shown exceptional sensitivity (94% per patient, 96% per lesion) and is particularly useful in detecting small or ectopic adenomas. Despite its higher sensitivity, it can yield false positives, particularly in the presence of thyroid disease. On the other hand, 4D-CT offers detailed anatomical imaging, aiding in the identification of parathyroids in challenging cases, including recurrent disease and ectopic glands. Studies suggest that FCH-PET and 4D-CT exhibit similar diagnostic performance and could be complementary in preoperative planning of most difficult situations. Conclusions: This article also emphasizes a multimodal approach, where initial imaging is followed by advanced techniques only in cases of uncertainty. Although 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT is favored as a second-line option, 4D-CT remains invaluable for its high spatial resolution and ability to guide surgery in complex cases. Despite limitations in evidence, these imaging modalities significantly enhance the accuracy of parathyroid localization, contributing to more targeted and minimally invasive surgery. Full article

Background/Objectives: Predicting comprehensive patient characteristics is essential for optimal individualized rehabilitation plans for acute stroke patients. However, current models primarily predict single outcomes. This study aimed to assess the applicability of latent class analysis (LCA) in rehabilitation practice by identifying comprehensive characteristics and associated predictors in acute stroke patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study using the Japan Association of Rehabilitation Database, including 10,270 stroke patients admitted to 37 acute-care hospitals between January 2005 and March 2016. Patients were classified using LCA based on outcomes at discharge, including Functional Independence Measure (FIM), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) subscales for upper-extremity function, length of hospitalization, and discharge destination. Predictor variables at admission included age, FIM scores, NIHSS subscales for upper-extremity function, stroke type, and daily rehabilitation volume. Results: 6881 patients were classified into nine distinct classes (class size: 4–29%). Class 1, representing the mildest cases, was noted for independent ambulation and good upper limb function. Class 2 comprised those with the most severe clinical outcome. Other classes exhibited a gradient of severity, commonly encountered in clinical practice. For instance, Class 7 included right-sided paralysis with preserved motor activities of daily living (ADLs) and modified dependence in cognitive functions, such as communication. All predictors at admission were significantly associated with class membership at discharge (p < 0.001). Conclusions: LCA effectively identified unique clinical subgroups among acute stroke patients and demonstrated that key admission variables could predict class membership. This approach offers a promising insight into targeted, personalized rehabilitation practice for acute stroke patients. Full article

This study investigated the nuanced influence of urban morphology on the thermal performance of nine mass housing blocks (21–26, 28–30) in New Belgrade’s Central Zone. These blocks, showcasing diverse structures, provided a robust basis for evaluating the design parameters. ENVI-met simulations were used to assess two scenarios: an “asphalt-only” environment, isolating the urban structure’s impact, and a “real-world” scenario, including green infrastructure (GI). Overall, the findings emphasize that while GI offers mitigation, the inherent urban built structure fundamentally determines thermal outcomes. An urban block’s thermal performance, it turns out, is a complex interplay between morphological factors and local climate. Crucially, simple metrics like Green Area Percentage (GAP) and Building Coverage Ratio (BCR) proved unreliable predictors of thermal performance. This highlights the critical need for urban planning regulations to evolve beyond basic surface indicators and embrace sophisticated, context-sensitive design principles for effective heat mitigation. Optimal performance arises from morphologies that actively manage heat accumulation and facilitate its dissipation, a characteristic exemplified by Block 22’s integrated design. However, even the best-performing Block 22 remains warmer compared to denser central areas, suggesting that urban densification can be a strategy for heat mitigation. Given New Belgrade’s blocks are protected heritage, targeted GI reinforcements remain the only viable approach for improving the outdoor thermal comfort. Full article

Intelligent driving technology is expected to reshape urban transportation, but its promotion is hindered by user acceptance challenges and diverse technical routes. This study proposes a comprehensive user acceptance evaluation framework for intelligent driving from the perspective of value engineering (VE). The novelty of this framework lies in three aspects: (1) It unifies behavioral theory and utility theory under the value engineering framework, and it extracts key indicators such as safety, travel efficiency, trust, comfort, and cost, thus addressing the issue of the lack of integration between subjective and objective factors in previous studies. (2) It establishes a systematic mapping mechanism from technical solutions to evaluation indicators, filling the gap of insufficient targeting at different technical routes in the existing literature. (3) It quantifies acceptance differences via VE’s core formula of V = F/C, overcoming the ambiguity of non-technical evaluation in prior research. A case study comparing single-vehicle intelligence vs. collaborative intelligence and different sensor combinations (vision-only, map fusion, and lidar fusion) shows that collaborative intelligence and vision-based solutions offer higher comprehensive acceptance due to balanced functionality and cost. This framework guides enterprises in technical strategy planning and assists governments in formulating industrial policies by quantifying acceptance differences across technical routes. Full article

Introduction/Objective: Post-bariatric surgery patients require long-term, coordinated care to address complex nutritional, physiological, and behavioral challenges. Personalized smart nutrition, combining individualized dietary strategies with targeted monitoring, has emerged as a valuable direction for optimizing recovery and long-term outcomes. This article examines how traditional medical protocols can be enhanced by digital solutions in a multidisciplinary framework. Methods: The study analyzes current clinical practices, including personalized meal planning, physical rehabilitation, biochemical marker monitoring, and psychological counseling, as applied in post-bariatric care. These established approaches are then analyzed in relation to the NutriMonitCare system, a digital health system developed and tested in a laboratory environment. Used here as an illustrative example, the NutriMonitCare system demonstrates the potential of digital tools to support clinicians through real-time monitoring of dietary intake, activity levels, and physiological parameters. Results: Findings emphasize that medical protocols remain the cornerstone of post-surgical management, while digital tools may provide added value by enhancing data availability, supporting individualized decision making, and reinforcing patient adherence. Systems like the NutriMonitCare system could be integrated into interdisciplinary care models to refine nutrition-focused interventions and improve communication across care teams. However, their clinical utility remains theoretical at this stage and requires further validation. Conclusions: In conclusion, the integration of digital health tools with conventional post-operative care has the potential to advance personalized smart nutrition. Future research should focus on clinical evaluation, real-world testing, and ethical implementation of such technologies into established medical workflows to ensure both efficacy and patient safety. Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. The utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in missions such as reconnaissance and surveillance has grown rapidly, underscoring the need for efficient path planning algorithms that ensure both optimality and collision avoidance. The A-star algorithm is widely used for global path planning due to its ability to generate optimal routes; however, its high computational cost makes it unsuitable for real-time applications, particularly in unknown or dynamic environments. For local path planning, the Artificial Potential Field (APF) algorithm enables real-time navigation by attracting the UAV toward the target while repelling it from obstacles. Despite its efficiency, APF suffers from local minima and limited performance in dynamic settings. To address these challenges, this paper proposes the A-star-Guided Potential Field (AGPF) algorithm, which integrates the strengths of A-star and APF to achieve robust performance in both global and local path planning. The AGPF algorithm was validated through simulations conducted in the Robot Operating System (ROS) environment. Simulation results demonstrate that AGPF produces smoother and more optimal paths than A-star, while avoiding the local minima issues inherent in APF. Furthermore, AGPF effectively handles moving and previously unknown obstacles by generating real-time avoidance trajectories, demonstrating strong adaptability in dynamic and uncertain environments. This paper proposes a novel dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) framework that integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications into an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, termed the ISAC-UAV architecture. In this system, the UAV’s mobility is leveraged to simultaneously serve multiple single-antenna uplink users (UEs) and perform radar-based sensing tasks. A key challenge stems from the target position uncertainty due to movement, which impairs matched filtering and beamforming, thereby degrading both uplink reception and sensing performance. Moreover, UAV energy consumption associated with mobility must be considered to ensure energy-efficient operation. We aim to jointly maximize radar sensing accuracy and minimize UAV movement energy over multiple time steps, while maintaining reliable uplink communications. To address this multi-objective optimization, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a long short-term memory (LSTM)-enhanced deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) network. By leveraging historical target trajectory data, the model improves prediction of target positions, enhancing sensing accuracy. The proposed DRL-based approach enables joint optimization of UAV trajectory and uplink power control over time. Extensive simulations validate that our method significantly improves communication quality and sensing performance, while ensuring energy-efficient UAV operation. Comparative results further confirm the model’s adaptability and robustness in dynamic environments, outperforming existing UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation benchmarks. Full article

Urinary Multidrug-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: Essential Oil Countermeasures in a One Health Case Report

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp) is eroding therapeutic options for urinary tract infections. We isolated a multidrug-resistant strain from the urine of a chronically bacteriuric patient and confirmed its identity by Vitek-2 and MALDI-TOF MS. Initial disk-diffusion profiling against 48 antibiotics revealed susceptibility to only 5 agents. One month later, repeat testing showed that tetracycline alone remained active, highlighting the strain’s rapidly evolving resistome. Given the scarcity of drug options, we performed an “aromatogram” with seven pure essential oils, propolis, and two commercial phytotherapeutic blends. Biomicin Forte® produced a 30 mm bactericidal halo, while thyme, tea tree, laurel, and palmarosa oils yielded clear inhibition zones of 11–22 mm. These in vitro data demonstrate that carefully selected plant-derived products can target CR-Kp where conventional antibiotics fail. Integrating aromatogram results into One Health’s stewardship plans may therefore help preserve last-line antibiotics and provide adjunctive options for persistent urinary infections. Full article

Assessing the Cooling Effects of Urban Parks and Their Potential Influencing Factors: Perspectives on Maximum Impact and Accumulation Effects

Urban parks play an essential role in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect driven by urbanization. A rigorous understanding of the cooling effects of urban parks can support urban planning efforts aimed at mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban sustainability. However, previous research has primarily focused on the maximum cooling impact, often overlooking the accumulative effects arising from spatial continuity. The present study fills this gap by investigating 74 urban parks located in the central area of Jinan and constructing a comprehensive cooling evaluation framework through two dimensions: maximum impact (Park Cooling Area, PCA; Park Cooling Efficiency, PCE) and cumulative impact (Park Cooling Intensity, PCI; Park Cooling Gradient, PCG). We further systematically examined the influence of park attributes and the surrounding urban structures on these metrics. The findings indicate that urban parks, as a whole, significantly contribute to lowering the ambient temperatures in their vicinity: 62.3% are located in surface temperature cold spots, reducing ambient temperatures by up to 7.77 °C. However, cooling intensity, range, and efficiency vary significantly across parks, with an average PCI of 0.0280, PCG of 0.99 °C, PCA of 46.00 ha, and PCE of 5.34. For maximum impact, PCA is jointly determined by park area, boundary length, and shape complexity, while smaller parks generally exhibit higher PCE—reflecting diminished cooling efficiency at excessive scales. For cumulative impact, building density and spatial enclosure degree surrounding parks critically regulate PCI and PCG by influencing cool-air aggregation and diffusion. Based on these findings, this study classified urban parks according to their cooling characteristics, clarified the functional differences among different park types, and proposed targeted recommendations. Direct electrification and hydrogen utilization represent two key pathways for decarbonizing the glass industry, with their effectiveness subject to adequate furnace design and renewable energy availability. This study presents a techno-economic assessment for optimal solar energy integration in a representative 300 t/d oxyfuel container glass furnace with a specific energy consumption of 4.35 GJ/t. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed to evaluate specific melting costs, carbon emissions, and renewable energy self-consumption and self-production rates across three scenarios: direct solar coupling, battery storage, and a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Battery storage achieves the greatest reductions in specific melting costs and emissions, whereas hydrogen integration minimizes electricity export to the grid. By incorporating capital investment considerations, the study quantifies the cost premiums and capacity requirements under varying decarbonization targets. A combination of 30 MW of solar plant and 9 MW of electric boosting enables the realization of around 30% carbon reduction while increasing total costs by 25%. Deeper decarbonization targets require more advanced systems, with batteries emerging as a cost-effective solution. These findings offer critical insights into the economic and environmental trade-offs, as well as the technical constraints associated with renewable energy adoption in the glass industry, providing a foundation for strategic energy and decarbonization planning. National Multi-Scenario Simulation of Low-Carbon Land Use to Achieve the Carbon-Neutrality Target in China

Refining the land use structure can boost land utilization efficiency and curtail regional carbon emissions. Nevertheless, prior research has predominantly concentrated on static linear planning analysis. It has failed to account for how future dynamic alterations in driving factors (such as GDP and population) affect simulation outcomes and how the land use spatial configuration impacts the attainment of the carbon-neutrality goal. In this research, 1 km spatial resolution LULC products were employed to meticulously simulate multiple land use scenarios across China at the national level from 2030 to 2060. This was performed by taking into account the dynamic changes in driving factors. Subsequently, an analysis was carried out on the low-carbon land use spatial structure required to reach the carbon-neutrality target. The findings are as follows: (1) When employing the PLUS (Patch—based Land Use Simulation) model to conduct simulations of various land use scenarios in China by taking into account the dynamic alterations in driving factors, a high degree of precision was attained across diverse scenarios. The sustainable development scenario demonstrated the best performance, with kappa, OA, and FoM values of 0.9101, 93.15%, and 0.3895, respectively. This implies that the simulation approach based on dynamic factors is highly suitable for national-scale applications. (2) The simulation accuracy of the PLUS and GeoSOS-FLUS (Systems for Geographical Modeling and Optimization, Simulation of Future Land Utilization) models was validated for six scenarios by extrapolating the trends of influencing factors. Moreover, a set of scenarios was added to each model as a control group without extrapolation. The present research demonstrated that projecting the trends of factors having an impact notably improved the simulation precision of both the PLUS and GeoSOS-FLUS models. When contrasted with the GeoSOS-FLUS model, the PLUS model attained superior simulation accuracy across all six scenarios. The highest precision indicators were observed in the sustainable development scenario, with kappa, OA, and FoM values reaching 0.9101, 93.15%, and 0.3895, respectively. The precise simulation method of the PLUS model, which considers the dynamic changes in influencing factors, is highly applicable at the national scale. (3) Under the sustainable development scenario, it is anticipated that China’s land use carbon emissions will reach their peak in 2030 and achieve the carbon-neutrality target by 2060. Net carbon emissions are expected to decline by 14.36% compared to the 2020 levels. From the perspective of dynamic changes in influencing factors, the PLUS model was used to accurately simulate China’s future land use. Based on these simulations, multi-scenario predictions of future carbon emissions were made, and the results uncover the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of China’s carbon emissions. This study aims to offer a solid scientific basis for policy-making related to China’s low-carbon economy and high-quality development. It also intends to present Chinese solutions and key paths for achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Full article
