Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the aetiology of IBD remains largely unknown, several studies suggest that an individual’s genetic susceptibility, external environmental factors, intestinal microbial flora, and immune responses are all factors involved in and functionally linked to the pathogenesis of IBD. Beyond the gastrointestinal manifestations, IBD patients frequently suffer from psychiatric comorbidities, particularly depression and anxiety. It remains unclear whether these disorders arise solely from reduced quality of life or whether they share overlapping biological mechanisms with IBD. This review aims to explore the bidirectional relationship between IBD and depressive disorders (DDs), with a focus on four key shared mechanisms: immune dysregulation, genetic susceptibility, alterations in gut microbiota composition, and dysfunction of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. By examining recent literature, we highlight how these interconnected systems may contribute to both intestinal inflammation and mood disturbances. Furthermore, we discuss the reciprocal pharmacologic interactions between IBD and DDs: treatments for IBD, such as TNF-alpha and integrin inhibitors, have demonstrated effects on mood and anxiety symptoms, while certain antidepressants appear to exert independent anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing the risk or severity of IBD. Overall, this review underscores the need for a multidisciplinary approach to the care of IBD patients, integrating psychological and gastroenterological assessment. A better understanding of the shared pathophysiology may help refine therapeutic strategies and support the development of personalized, gut–brain-targeted interventions. Full article

Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyze the role of interdisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists in patient care. For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases covering the period from 2000 to 2025. Sixty-two peer-reviewed publications meeting the methodological and thematic criteria were included in the analysis, including original studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and case reports. The results indicate significant correlations between disease activity and the severity of periodontal and microbiological changes, while effective endocrine treatment only results in the partial regression of morphological changes. Particular attention was given to the role of the dentist in recognizing the early symptoms of the disease, planning prosthetic and surgical treatment, and monitoring therapy-related complications. Interdisciplinary collaboration models, including integrated clinics and co-managed care, were also described as optimal systemic solutions for improving treatment quality. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: there is a need for the permanent integration of dentistry into the standard of interdisciplinary care for patients with acromegaly, in both diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions. Increasing awareness among dentists and developing integrated collaboration models may reduce the time to diagnosis, improve patients’ quality of life, and enable the more effective management of craniofacial complications in the course of this rare disease. Morphology is an important characteristic of the hydraulic and gravitational processes driving gully erosion. In this study, field scouring experiments were conducted on five experimental plots using terrestrial laser scanning to study gully erosion processes. The erosion and deposition on a gully slope were quantified using the M3C2 algorithm. The results show that the proportion of sediment yield of the gully slope in the whole slope–gully system ranged from 81.5% to 99.7% for different flow discharges (25, 40, 55, 70, and 85 L/min). Compared with low flow discharges (25 and 40 L/min), the gully slope presented more intense gully head retreat and higher erosion intensity under relatively high discharges (55, 70, and 85 L/min). Alcove expansion processes were characterized by horizontal and vertical cycles. Vertical dynamic changes were dominated by the co-evolution of collapses of the gully head and the deepening of the alcove. Horizontal development mainly manifested as a widening of the alcove caused by the hydraulic erosion of the gully wall. The roughness of the gully slope increased gradually with the increase in scour times and then tended towards stability. These results provide a reference for understanding the processes and mechanisms of gully erosion. Full article

Background: Congenital diarrhea is persistent diarrhea that manifests during the neonatal period. Mutations in DGAT1, which is crucial for triglyceride synthesis and lipid absorption in the small intestine, are causal factors for congenital diarrhea. In this study, we aimed to determine the value of tissue RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) for assisting with the clinical diagnosis of some genetic variants of uncertain significance. Methods: We clinically evaluated a patient with watery diarrhea, vomiting, severe malnutrition, and total parenteral nutrition dependence. Possible pathogenic variants were detected using whole-exome sequencing (WES). RNA-seq was utilized to explore the transcriptional alterations in DGAT1 variants identified by WES with unknown clinical significance, according to the American College of Medical Genetics guidelines. Systemic examinations, including endoscopic and histopathological examinations of the intestinal mucosa, were conducted to rule out other potential diagnoses. Results: We successfully diagnosed a patient with congenital diarrhea and protein-losing enteropathy caused by a DGAT1 mutation and reviewed the literature of 19 cases of children with DGAT defects. The missense mutation c.620A>G, p.Lys207Arg located in exon 15, and the intronic mutation c.1249-6T>G in DGAT1 were identified by WES. RNA-seq revealed two aberrant splicing events in the DGAT1 gene of the patient’s small intestinal tissue. Both variants lead to loss-of-function consequences and are classified as pathogenic variants of congenital diarrhea. Conclusions: Rare DGAT1 variants were identified as pathogenic evidence of congenital diarrhea, and the detection of tissue-specific mRNA splicing and transcriptional effects can provide auxiliary evidence. To study the generation and dissipation process of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways and deeply understand the hazard mechanisms of agglomerate fog sections in mountainous expressways, based on the analysis of the geographical location characteristics of mountainous expressways and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of agglomerate fog, the airspace constitutive model of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways was constructed based on Newton constitutive theory. Firstly, the properties of the Newtonian fluid and cluster fog were compared and analyzed, and the influence mechanism of environmental factors such as the altitude difference, topography, water system, valley effect, and vegetation on the generation and dissipation of agglomerate fog in mountainous expressways was analyzed. Based on Newton’s constitutive theory, the constitutive model of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and agglomerate fog points in the foggy airspace of the mountainous expressway was established. Then, the time and spatial distribution of fog in Chongqing and Guizhou from 2021 to 2023 were analyzed. Finally, the model was verified by using the meteorological data and fog warning data of Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province in 2023. The results show that the foggy airspace of mountainous expressways can be defined as “the space occupied by the agglomerate fog that occurs above the mountain expressway”; The temporal and spatial distribution of foggy airspace on expressways in mountainous areas is closely related to the topography, water system, vegetation distribution, and local microclimate formed by thermal radiation. The horizontal and vertical movements of the atmosphere have little influence on the foggy airspace on expressways in mountainous areas. The specific manifestation of time distribution is that the occurrence of agglomerate fog is concentrated from November to April of the following year, and the daily occurrence time is mainly concentrated between 4:00–8:00 and 18:00–22:00. The calculation results of the foggy airspace constitutive model of the expressway in the mountainous area show that when there is low surface radiation or no surface radiation, the fogging value range is [90, 100], and the fogging value range is [50, 70] when there is high surface radiation (>200), and there is generally no fog in other intervals. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for traffic safety management and control of mountainous expressway fog sections. Full article

This review explores sexual aggression in broiler breeder males, aiming to synthesize existing scientific evidence regarding its causes, behavioral manifestations, and consequences, while addressing the genetic, neuroendocrine, and environmental mechanisms involved. Through an extensive analysis of scientific literature, the paper highlights that intensive genetic selection aimed at enhancing growth and productivity has resulted in unintended behavioral dysfunctions. These include the reduction or absence of courtship behavior, the occurrence of forced copulations, and a notable increase in injury rates among hens. Reproductive challenges observed in meat-type breeder flocks, in contrast to those in layer lines, appear to stem from selection practices that have overlooked traits related to mating behavior. Environmental and managerial conditions, including photoperiod manipulation, stocking density, nutritional imbalances, and the use of mixed-sex rearing systems, are also identified as contributing factors to the expression of sexual aggression. Furthermore, recent genetic findings indicate a potential link between inherited neurobehavioral factors and aggressive behavior, with the SORCS2 gene emerging as a relevant candidate. Based on these insights, the review emphasizes the importance of considering behavioral parameters in breeding programs in order to reconcile productivity objectives with animal welfare standards. Future research may benefit from a more integrative approach that combines behavioral, physiological, and genomic data to better understand and address the multifactorial nature of sexual aggression in poultry systems. It is well-established that principal leadership significantly influences student learning in developed countries, yet much less is known about how leadership practices manifest in complex systems like China’s, where rapid modernization intersects with deep-rooted educational traditions. In particular, Chinese principals face multiple challenges in balancing the implementation of educational reform policies, high parental expectations, and their own educational ideology, all within limited resources. The current study examines these challenges in Shenzhen, a city which typically manifests them through its rapid development. Specifically, we took a phenomenographic approach and interviewed the principals and staff from five prestigious primary schools to extract the key components behind the diverse school leaders’ styles and practices. Results showed that, the Chinese leadership practice model consists of five key components: mission setting, infrastructure reconstruction, teacher development, learning improvement, and educators’ networking. Although the first four components in this model align with established theories in developed countries, networking was identified as a distinctive and critical element for securing resources and fostering collaboration. These findings may broaden the scope of leadership theories and underscore the need to contextualize leadership practices based on local challenges and dynamics. It also offers practical insights for school leaders on navigating challenges to improve teacher and student outcomes. Full article

Congenital cataracts (CCs) are a leading cause of preventable childhood blindness, with genetic factors playing a crucial role in their etiology. Nance–Horan syndrome (NHS) is a rare X-linked dominant disorder associated with CCs but is often underdiagnosed due to variable expressivity, particularly in female carriers. Objective: This study aimed to explore the genetic landscape of CCs in a Swiss cohort, focusing on two novel NHS and one novel GJA8 variants and their phenotypic presentation. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was conducted on 20 unrelated Swiss families diagnosed with CCs. Variants were analyzed for pathogenicity using genetic databases, and segregation analysis was performed. Clinical data, including cataract phenotype and associated systemic anomalies, were assessed to establish genotype–phenotype correlations. Results: Potentially pathogenic DNA sequence variants were identified in 10 families, including three novel variants, one in GJA8 (c.584T>C) and two NHS variants (c.250_252insA and c.484del). Additional previously reported variants were detected in CRYBA1, CRYGC, CRYAA, MIP, EPHA2, and MAF, reflecting genetic heterogeneity in the cohort. Notably, NHS variants displayed significant phenotypic variability, suggesting dose-dependent effects and X-chromosome inactivation in female carriers. Conclusions: NHS remains underdiagnosed due to its variable expressivity and the late manifestation of systemic features, often leading to misclassification as isolated CC. This study highlights the importance of genetic testing in unexplained CC cases to improve early detection of syndromic forms. The identification of novel NHS and GJA8 variants provides new insights into the genetic complexity of CCs, emphasizing the need for further research on genotype–phenotype correlations. Full article

Carassius auratus exhibits significant physiological and behavioral alterations under the combined stress of temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) fluctuations, which are common challenges in aquaculture. In this investigation, we employed controlled thermal and DO gradients to characterize the multidimensional response profile of this species. The key findings revealed that thermal elevation profoundly influenced blood glucose and cortisol concentrations. Notably, exposure to hyperoxic conditions markedly attenuated stress responses relative to hypoxia at equivalent temperatures: cortisol levels were significantly suppressed (reductions of 60.11%, 118.06%, and 34.72%), while blood glucose levels exhibited concurrent increases (16.42%, 26.43%, and 26.34%). Distinctive behavioral patterns, including floating head behavior, surface swimming behavior, and rollover behavior, were identified as indicative behaviors of thermal–oxygen stress. Molecular analysis demonstrated the upregulated expression of stress-associated genes (HSP70, HSP90, HIF-1α, and Prdx3), which correlated temporally with elevated cortisol and glucose concentrations and the manifestation of stress behaviors. Furthermore, a muscle texture assessment indicated that increased DO availability mitigated the textural deterioration induced by heat stress. Collectively, this work establishes an authentic biomarker framework, providing crucial threshold parameters essential for the development of intelligent, real-time environmental monitoring and dynamic regulation systems to enhance climate-resilient aquaculture management. Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare systemic vasculitis with eosinophilic inflammation and variable clinical presentations. Although skin manifestations are frequent, current classification criteria do not include them, which may underestimate their diagnostic value. This prospective observational study aimed to assess systemic and skin involvement as well as eosinophilia, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA), and Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) serum levels in 20 EGPA patients followed for one year at the University Hospital of Messina, Italy, before starting Mepolizumab, 300 mg. Eosinophilia, ANCA status, systemic and skin involvement were also evaluated at 6 and 12 months; a literature review on these data supplements our findings. Skin involvement was present in 55% of patients, including purpura, urticarial vasculitis, angioedema, maculopapular rash, and nodules, mostly in ANCA-negative patients, though purpura was more frequent in ANCA-positive cases but without any statistically significant correlation. ANAs were present in 50% of patients, together with ANCA in two subjects and without in eight. Mepolizumab significantly reduced eosinophil levels, BVASs, and corticosteroid dependence, with notable improvement in skin symptoms. In conclusion, skin manifestations are common in EGPA and may represent useful indicators of disease activity. Their integration with ANCA status, eosinophil counts, and positivity to other autoantibodies could enhance diagnostic and monitoring strategies identifying different clusters of EGPA patients even if the small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings. This paper examines Krivelj, a copper mining village in Serbia, as a critical yet overlooked node within global extractive networks. Despite supplying copper essential for renewable energy and sustainable architecture, Krivelj experiences severe ecological disruption, forced relocations, and socio-spatial destabilization, becoming a “sacrifice zone”—an area deliberately subjected to harm for broader economic interests. Employing a hybrid methodology that combines ethnographic fieldwork with Geographic Information Systems (GISs), this study spatializes narratives of extractive violence collected from residents through walking interviews, field sketches, and annotated aerial imagery. By integrating satellite data, legal documents, environmental sensors, and lived testimonies, it uncovers the concept of “slow violence,” where incremental harm occurs through bureaucratic neglect, ambient pollution, and legal ambiguity. Critiquing the abstraction of Planetary Urbanization theory, this research employs countertopography and forensic spatial analysis to propose a counter-cartographic framework that integrates geospatial analysis with local narratives. It demonstrates how global mining finance manifests locally through tangible experiences, such as respiratory illnesses and disrupted community relationships, emphasizing the potential of counter-cartography as a tool for visualizing and contesting systemic injustice. This study investigates the foundational causes of unsustainability that obstruct efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, water crises, and public health deterioration. Using qualitative research with in-depth expert interviews from education, environmental studies, and business, it finds that these global challenges, while visible on the surface, are deeply rooted in worldviews that shape human behavior, societal structures, and policies. Building on this insight, the thematic analysis manifests three interrelated systemic paradigms as the fundamental drivers of unsustainability: a crisis of wholeness, reflected in fragmented identities and collective disorientation; a disconnection from nature, shaped by human-centered perspectives; and the influence of dominant political-economic systems which prioritize growth logics over ecological and social concerns. These paradigms underlie both structural and cognitive barriers to systemic transformation, which influence the design and implementation of education for sustainability. By clarifying a body of knowledge and systemic paradigms regarding unsustainability, this paper calls for transformative education that promotes a holistic, value-based approach, eco-empathy, and critical thinking, aiming to equip future generations with the tools to challenge and transform unsustainable systems. This study endeavors to elucidate the mechanisms and pathways through which the digital economy shapes agricultural green development, providing theoretical underpinnings and practical guidance for the green transformation of regional agriculture. (1) Using panel data from 18 prefecture-level cities in Sichuan Province (2013–2022), a comprehensive evaluation index system for agricultural green development was formulated. Fixed-effects, mediating-effects, and threshold-effects models were employed to systematically analyze the direct effects, transmission pathways, and nonlinear characteristics of the digital economy on agricultural green development. (2) The fixed-effects model shows that the digital economy markedly propels agricultural green development in Sichuan Province. The mediating-effects model verifies two transmission pathways: “digital economy → technological progression → agricultural green development” and “digital economy → industrial structure upgrading → agricultural green development”. The threshold-effects model suggests that when the digital economy is in the low-threshold interval, it exerts a suppressive impact on agricultural green development; however, once the threshold is surpassed, its promoting effect strengthens significantly. (3) The results demonstrate the following findings: First, the digital economy exerts a significant positive effect on agricultural green development. Second, this promoting effect exhibits significant nonlinear characteristics that vary with the level of digital economy development. Third, the impact manifests remarkable regional heterogeneity, necessitating context-specific development strategies. (4) Five optimization recommendations are proposed: promote the categorized development of agricultural digital technologies and industrial upgrading; advance digital infrastructure and technology adaptation in phases; design differentiated regional policies; establish a hierarchical and classified long-term guarantee mechanism; and strengthen the “industry-university-research-application” collaborative innovation and dynamic monitoring system. Background: Dystonic cerebral palsy (DCP) is a complex, disabling manifestation of secondary dystonia, which significantly impacts motor function, quality of life, and well-being. Conventional pharmacologic therapies frequently do not relieve symptoms sufficiently. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internal segment (GPi) has gained increasing attention as a neuromodulatory therapy for refractory dystonia. Still, the experience of the effect of GPi DBS treatment in adults with DCP has, until recently, been limited. Methods: We performed a retrospective, two-center case series of 11 adult patients with medically refractory DCP who underwent bilateral GPi-DBS. The clinical outcomes were evaluated based on the Burke–Fahn–Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale (BFMDRS), the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), and the Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS). The assessments were done preoperatively and at 1-year follow-up. Changes in continuous variables were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: At the 1-year follow-up, the mean BFMDRS score improved from 69.6 ± 27.6 to 54.3 ± 36.5 (p = 0.001), indicating a significant reduction in overall dystonia severity. Functional independence also improved, demonstrated by the rise in FIM scores from 65.3 ± 33.9 to 79.2 ± 43.4 (p = 0.006). Although GMFCS levels did not change in most patients (p = 0.125), the burden on caregivers decreased significantly, with CBS scores falling from 35.7 ± 18.8 to 32.0 ± 17.1 (p = 0.015). There were no surgical complications. Conclusions: In adults, bilateral GPi-DBS is a safe and effective intervention for DCP, improving motor control and increasing functional independence while decreasing caregiver burden. These findings lend support to its role in the multidisciplinary management of DCP. Full article

The characterization of Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) as exhibiting an “illusion of thinking” has recently emerged in the literature, sparking widespread public discourse. Some have suggested these manifestations represent bugs requiring fixes. I challenge this interpretation by reframing LRM behavior through dual-process theory from cognitive psychology. I draw on more than half a century of research on human cognitive effort and disengagement. The observed patterns include performance collapse at high complexity and counterintuitive reduction in reasoning effort. These appear to align with human cognitive phenomena, particularly System 2 engagement and disengagement under cognitive load. Rather than representing technical limitations, these behaviors likely manifest computational processes analogous to human cognitive constraints. In other words, they represent not a bug but a feature of bounded rational systems. I propose empirically testable hypotheses comparing LRM token patterns with human pupillometry data. I suggest that computational “rest” periods may restore reasoning performance, paralleling human cognitive recovery mechanisms. This reframing indicates that LRM limitations may reflect bounded rationality rather than fundamental reasoning failures. Accordingly, this article is presented as a hypothesis paper: it collates six decades of cognitive effort research and invites the scientific community to subject the dual-process predictions to empirical tests through coordinated human–AI experiments.
