Telerehabilitation—the remote delivery of rehabilitation services—is undergoing a paradigm shift with the convergence of immersive virtual reality (VR) and wearable biosensor technologies. This perspective article outlines a vision for home-based motor and cognitive rehabilitation that is engaging, personalized, and data-driven. We describe how immersive VR environments (for example, simulations of home settings or supermarkets) coupled with wearable sensors can address current challenges in rehabilitation by increasing patient motivation, enabling real-time biofeedback, and supporting remote clinician supervision. Gamification mechanisms and rich sensory feedback in VR are highlighted as key strategies to enhance user engagement and adherence to therapy. We discuss conceptual innovations such as multi-sensor data integration, dynamic difficulty adaptation, and AI-driven personalization of exercises, derived from recent research and our development experience, and consider their potential benefits for patients with neuro-cognitive-motor impairments (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis). Implementation scenarios for home-based therapy are presented, emphasizing scalability, standardized digital metrics for monitoring progress, and seamless involvement of clinicians via telehealth platforms. We also critically examine the current limitations of VR and telehealth rehabilitation and how an integrative model could overcome these barriers. More specifically, this perspective defines the engineering requirements of a closed-loop VR-based telerehabilitation framework, including multimodal data synchronization, calibration, signal-quality management, interpretable adaptive control, digital biomarker validation, and practical strategies to improve accessibility, privacy, and scalability in home-based neurological rehabilitation. E-commerce growth has reshaped consumer behavior and retail services, driving parcel demand and challenging last-mile logistics. Existing research predominantly relies on survey data and global regression models that overlook intra-urban spatial heterogeneity in shopping behaviors. This study bridges this gap by analyzing e-commerce demand’s spatial distribution from a retail service perspective, identifying key drivers, and evaluating implications for omnichannel strategies and logistics. Utilizing waybill big data, spatial analysis, and multiscale geographically weighted regression, we reveal: (1) High-density e-commerce demand areas are predominantly located in central districts, whereas peripheral regions exhibit statistically lower volumes. The spatial distribution pattern of e-commerce demand aligns with the urban development spatial structure. (2) Factors such as population density and education levels significantly influence e-commerce demand. (3) Convenience stores play a dual role as retail service providers and parcel collection points, reinforcing their importance in shaping consumer accessibility and service efficiency, particularly in underserved urban areas. (4) Supermarkets exert a substitution effect on online shopping by offering immediate product availability, highlighting their role in shaping consumer purchasing preferences and retail service strategies. These findings contribute to retail and consumer services research by demonstrating how spatial e-commerce demand patterns reflect consumer shopping preferences, the role of omnichannel retail strategies, and the competitive dynamics between e-commerce and physical retail formats. Corporate environmental claims often neglect the substantial ecological impact of land-use changes. This case study examines the spatial dimension of retail-driven land-use transformation by analyzing supermarket expansion in the Veneto region (northern Italy), with a focus on a large grocery retailer. We evaluated its corporate environmental claims by assessing land consumption patterns from 1983 to 2024 using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS-based methodology involved geocoding 113 Points of Sale (POS—individual retail outlets), performing photo-interpretation of historical aerial imagery, and classifying land-cover types prior to construction. We applied spatial metrics such as total converted surface area, land-cover class frequency across eight categories (e.g., agricultural, herbaceous, arboreal), and the average linear distance between afforestation sites and POS developed on previously rural land. Our findings reveal that 65.97% of the total land converted for Points of Sale development occurred in rural areas, primarily agricultural and herbaceous lands. These landscapes play a critical role in supporting urban biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services, which are increasingly threatened by unchecked land conversion. While the corporate sustainability reports and marketing strategies emphasize afforestation efforts under their “We Love Nature” initiative, our spatial analysis uncovers no evidence of actual land-use conversion. Additionally, reforestation activities are located an average of 40.75 km from converted sites, undermining their role as effective compensatory measures. These findings raise concerns about selective disclosure and greenwashing, driving the need for more comprehensive and transparent corporate sustainability reporting. The study argues for stronger policy frameworks to incentivize urban regeneration over greenfield development and calls for the integration of land-use data into corporate sustainability disclosures. By combining geospatial methods with content analysis, the research offers new insights into the intersection of land use, business practices, and environmental sustainability in climate-vulnerable regions. This study investigates residential segregation and housing types in Craiova, Romania, with a particular focus on the disparities shaped by historical and contemporary urban developments. Using collected data from former hostels built for young workers during the communist era, this research maps and analyzes the spatial distribution and living conditions of these housing types at a neighborhood level. Key metrics such as the number of inhabitants, the surface area of rooms, the current occupancy rates, and the number of unoccupied rooms were collected. Additionally, residential segregation is measured using indices of dissimilarity, isolation, exposure, concentration, and centralization, providing a comprehensive view of the socio-spatial divides within the city. The findings indicate significant disparities between these buildings with unsuitable living conditions and the newer residential developments, revealing a clear urban divide. No differences have been identified in terms of access to urban services like education, health, green areas, banks, or supermarkets, despite the appropriate location differences being noted in access to water and gas supply, and internet services. This study contributes to the understanding of how housing types and access to services in Craiova shape patterns of residential segregation, and it suggests policy interventions aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of these urban divides. Comprehending the dynamics of risk spillover across the value chain is indispensable for effective risk management, especially amid increasing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. This study investigates the mechanics of risk transmission within the value chain of the Chinese hospitality industry by employing a Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregression (TVP-VAR) model using daily data from January 2015 to December 2023. Our research identifies key sub-sectors, such as hotel resort and luxury cruises, film and entertainment, malls and supermarkets, environmental and facilities services, air freight and logistics, and road transportation, as significant risk transmitters that affect the overall stability of the industry. Conversely, sectors such as restaurants, liquor and wine services, leisure services, and railway transport are designated as risk receivers. These results offer critical insights for stakeholders, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive risk management strategies to reduce negative spillover effects, particularly in the context of economic shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical events like the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Significant numbers of shopping trolleys are taken out of service through abandonment each year, leading to negative environmental, economic, and social impacts. These impacts have been discussed qualitatively in the literature; however, quantitative analysis of the environmental impacts is lacking. We performed a life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the manufacturing and subsequent abandonment, collection through diesel vans, and refurbishment of shopping trolleys in the Canley suburban area of Coventry city, UK. We found that manufacturing one shopping trolley had a global warming impact of 65.14 kg CO2 equivalent. The impact of collecting one trolley and returning it to the originating supermarket was 0.69 kg CO2 equivalent. Finally, the impact of transporting and refurbishing one trolley was 5.50 kg CO2 equivalent. These results show the major benefits of either collection or refurbishment over manufacturing new trolleys to replace abandoned ones. An observation is made that one trolley would have to be collected 93 times to offset its own manufacturing impact. The work also highlights the impact of abandonment. An estimated 520,000 abandoned trolleys in the UK every year lead to 343 tons CO2 equivalent through van collection only. If 10% of these trolleys required refurbishment, the impact would increase to 652 tons CO2 equivalent. Full article

This paper presents a review of the technologies and services associated with online grocery shopping. The progress in the field of online grocery shopping has been very rapid in recent years. Hence, there was a need to systematize knowledge about the latest various solutions used in this topic. The authors searched the internet, focusing on websites of different supermarkets, shops, and other services that offer online shopping, as well as reviewed scientific papers. Based on the collected material, the authors created four thematic parts, which include: (1) supermarket services; (2) dedicated grocery delivery services and farm-to-table; (3) shopping in Virtual Reality and the metaverse; smart devices and (4) AI in food ordering—the last part includes smart devices, such as smart refrigerators, ovens, their functionality, and the services connected with them. The authors refer to 243 sources. The research includes the three following objectives: (1) exploring and presenting the emerging applied ways of online grocery shopping, (2) exploring and presenting the latest technological advances related to the digitalization of grocery shopping, (3) discussing the upcoming technologies, services, and methods in online grocery shopping. This paper provides knowledge about a wide range of solutions offered by both supermarkets and stores (e.g., shopping applications, VR applications, metaverse shopping) and other companies (e.g., deliveries, product tracking), highlighting the numerous functions available thanks to smart devices (e.g., voice control, own shopping lists, control of products, their quantities and expiration dates, management of user preferences, and many more). This paper also discusses social issues related to the presented solutions, such as their influence on consumer behavior, barriers to adoption, and the associated challenges. Full article

As the aging population in China increases, home-based elderly care is set to become the main mode of elderly care in the future. The construction of community elderly care service facilities is receiving more and more attention from society. Currently, residential area design standards in China lack clear guidance on the spatial planning of facilities, which will lead to unreasonable facility layout planning and insufficient convenience in the utilization of facilities by the elderly. Fully considering the distribution characteristics of community elderly care service facilities and the needs of the community life circle when planning residential areas can effectively solve this problem. This study takes Xi’an City as the research object, based on the theory of life circle, through questionnaire surveys and cluster analysis, analyzes the current situation of the construction of elderly care service facilities and the characteristics of the use by the elderly. Combined with the community life circle model, the study scope is divided into community life circle levels, and put forward the planning strategies of coverage rate, number, richness, and spatial layout of the facilities, respectively. These strategies are designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors, ensuring that they have access to essential support and resources within their communities. It demonstrated that middle-aged elderly prefer community canteens and activity centers, while those with limited mobility and multiple chronic diseases have a higher demand for health service centers and community canteens. The utilization weight analysis shows that vegetable markets and supermarkets are most frequently used, whereas health service centers are the least utilized. The research proposes strategic planning enhancements, including full coverage of basic facilities, targeted increases in high-demand facilities, and tailored facilities for elderly characteristics. It recommends cross-community layouts to ensure service radius coverage, development reservations for future needs, and quality improvements to address the low satisfaction rates of existing facilities. The study concludes that a targeted approach to facility planning, considering the elderly’s diverse needs, can enhance the community elderly care service system’s sustainability and effectiveness. The rise of rural e-commerce, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has driven agricultural development, resulting in a dual-channel model that combines offline supermarket docking with online e-commerce direct sales. Furthermore, given the perishable nature of most agricultural products, consumers exhibit a preference for high-quality logistics services. This paper analyses the dynamics of the agricultural supply chain, beginning with the “leading enterprises + farmers” production mode, and establishes two optimal decision-making models for online and offline dual-channel agricultural supply chains, incorporating logistics service levels. The first model considers centralised decision-making, where leading agricultural producers and community superstores make decisions simultaneously, aiming to maximise the overall profit of the supply chain. The second model addresses decentralised decision-making in which the producer, as the dominant player in a Stackelberg game, anticipates the reactions of retailers and sets the wholesale price, online sales price, and online logistics service level accordingly. Retailers, as followers, then determine the offline sales price and offline logistics service level based on the producer’s decisions. Finally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis of the proposed models. Our findings reveal that as consumer focus on logistics service levels increases, the overall profit of the supply chain improves, and as the unit logistics cost corresponding to the level of logistics service increases, the marginal benefits of decreasing profit brought about by the increase in unit logistics cost also decrease. Dynamic processes in society and demographics require a rapid response and adaptation of the existing public service infrastructure. Responsible planners must be able to analyse the situation, identify gaps in provision and derive decisions. The paper presents a web application that supports finding answers to various questions and planning decisions in the context of public service infrastructures (e.g., schools, pharmacies, supermarkets). Due to the high complexity, the combination of multi-criteria decision analysis and geographical information systems, especially in the web context, is still rarely implemented. With this spatial decision support system, we are pursuing an approach that makes multi-criteria analyses with spatially explicit methods available to the planning domain. By using this application, the user can select and adjust input parameters independently and thus strongly influence the analysis process and results—without a deep knowledge of decision-making methods or software skills. With such a centrally provided online multi-criteria spatial decision support system, the transparency and the quality of the analysis increase, while the workload for the planners is reduced, since they no longer have to spend time on preliminary data search and integration or on building complex methods and models themselves. This paper focuses on the modeling of automatic pricing and replenishment strategies for perishable products with time-varying deterioration rates based on an improved SVR-LSTM-ARIMA hybrid model. This research aims to support supermarkets in planning future strategies, optimizing category structure, reducing loss rates, and improving profit margins and service quality. Specifically, the paper selects perishable vegetables as the research category and calculates the cost-plus ratio for each vegetable category. Correlation analysis is conducted with total sales, and a non-parametric relationship curve is obtained using support vector regression for nonlinear fitting. The long and short memory recurrent neural network is then used to predict sales volume, and a pricing strategy is calculated based on the fitting curve. Additionally, the paper establishes a correlation between loss rate and shelf life, corrects the daily average sales volume index, and solves the problem of quantity and category of replenishment using a backpack problem approach. By considering multiple constraints, a quantitative category replenishment volume and pricing strategy is obtained. The mathematical model proposed in this paper addresses the replenishment and pricing challenges faced by supermarkets, aiming to improve revenue and reduce loss while meeting market requirements. In the last five years, the female labor force has increased rapidly in Saudi Arabia. This is due to the new government’s vision to empower women. For many decades, Saudi females were excluded from working in certain fields due to cultural restrictions. Nowadays, Saudi women are not only joining the service workforce but are currently employed in more physically demanding careers, such as manufacturing and military jobs, which were previously dominated by males. It becomes necessary to design workplaces, tools, and equipment to safely accommodate the female physical attributes, which include body dimensions. This study presents the anthropometric measurements of Saudi Arabian adult females. In total, 504 female subjects aged 20–70 participated in the study. Thirty-eight body measurements, including weight and triceps skinfold, were taken in sitting and standing postures. The main contribution of this study is to provide a national anthropometric database of Saudi females, which is very limited, especially for females in the age groups under study. The availability of such data will allow foreign and local manufacturers to design usable and safe products and workspaces for a wide range of Saudi adult females. The findings reveal that there are no significant differences in the body dimensions of Saudi females across all age groups, except for stature height, eye height, chest depth, skinfold (mm), sitting height, buttock–knee length, and hip breadth. The study also reveals that Saudi females’ body sizes are different from other Asian, Middle Eastern, and British nations, which invalidates the assumption of using other nations’ body measurements to estimate Saudis’ body measurements. Utilizing the supermarket cashier workstation to assess the appropriateness of commercial station fit for Saudi females’ body dimensions, the results underscore the crucial role of anthropometric measurements in addressing differences between product design and the unique body dimensions of Saudi females. The identified anthropometric mismatch highlights potential risks, emphasizing the threat to the working safety of Saudi females. Moreover, the data can be used by health professionals as a base to evaluate the health of Saudi adult females. Descriptive statistics and extreme values are determined. Although self-service facilities (SSFs) have been used on a large scale worldwide, they can be easily contaminated by microorganisms from the hands of their sequential users. This research aimed to study the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility/resistance of bacteria contaminating SSFs in Sakaka, Aljouf, Saudi Arabia. We randomly swabbed the surfaces of 200 SSFs, then used the suitable culture media, standard microbiological methods, and the MicroScan WalkAway Microbiology System, including the identification/antimicrobial susceptibility testing-combo panels. A high SSFs’ bacterial contamination load was detected (78.00%). Ninety percent of the samples collected in the afternoon, during the maximum workload of the SSFs, yielded bacterial growth (p < 0.001 *). Most of the contaminated SSFs were supermarket payment machines, self-pumping equipment at gas stations (p = 0.004 *), online banking service machines (p = 0.026 *), and barcode scanners in supermarkets. In the antiseptic-deficient areas, 55.1% of the contaminated SSFs were detected (p = 0.008 *). Fifty percent of the contaminated SSFs were not decontaminated. The most common bacterial contaminants were Escherichia coli (70 isolates), Klebsiella pneumoniae (66 isolates), Staphylococcus epidermidis (34 isolates), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (18 isolates), and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (14 isolates), representing 31.53%, 29.73%, 15.32%, 8.11%, and 6.31% of the isolates, respectively. Variable degrees of reduced sensitivity to some antimicrobials were detected among the bacterial isolates. The SSFs represent potential risks for the exchange of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria between the out-hospital environment and the hospitals through the hands of the public. As technology and science advance, there is an urgent need to deploy creative and automated techniques for decontaminating SSFs and make use of recent advancements in materials science for producing antibacterial surfaces. In recent times, we have encountered new situations that have imposed restrictions on our ability to visit public places. These changes have affected various aspects of our lives, including limited access to supermarkets, vegetable shops, and other essential establishments. As a response to these circumstances, we have developed a continuous review retrial queueing–inventory system featuring a single server and controlled customer arrivals. In our system, customers arriving to procure a single item follow a Markovian Arrival Process, while the service time for each customer is modeled by an exponential distribution. Inventories are replenished according to the (s,Q) reordering policy with exponentially distributed lead times. The system controls arrival in the waiting space with setup time. The customers who arrive at a not allowed situation decide to enter an orbit of infinite size with predefined probability. Orbiting customers make retrials to claim a place in the waiting space, and their inter-retrial times are exponentially distributed. The server may experience essential interruption (emergency situation) which arrives according to Poisson process. Then, the server goes for an emergency vacation of a random time which is exponentially distributed. In the steady-state case, the joint probability of the number of customers in orbit and the inventory level has been found, and the Matrix Geometric Method has been used to find the steady-state probability vector. In numerical calculations, the convexity of the system and the impact of F-policy and emergency vacation in the system are discussed. Full article

Evaluating the quality of life in life circles is an important prerequisite for effective life circle governance. Most studies evaluate the quality of life in life circles from either the living environment or public amenity supply perspective, and few adopt a composite perspective of these. This study developed an index system for evaluating the quality of life in life circles from both these perspectives, based on data from Changbai Island, Shenyang. We measured the living environment, amenity service, and quality of life indexes of urban life circles and analysed the spatial relationship between the living environment and amenity services, as well as the spatial effect of public amenities on the quality of life in communities. The findings are summarised as follows: (1) Quality of life tends to decline radially from the east to surrounding areas; (2) Life circles in Changbai Island are arranged in the following descending order according to the quality of life: life circles IV and II (equal), life circle III, and life circle I; (3) Various types of public amenities produce differentiated effects on the quality of life in life circles; specifically, middle schools can significantly improve the quality of life in surrounding communities, whereas community hospitals, large supermarkets, and community shops can have adverse effects if they are extremely close to residential areas. Our findings provide empirical evidence for evaluating the quality of life in urban life circles, evaluating methodology, and referencing for life circle governance. Full article
