Globalization and market saturation have led Portuguese textile companies to seek international markets not only for growth but also to contribute to their country’s international image. This study aims to explore how the internationalization of the Portuguese textile sector into the Chinese market contributes to Portugal’s destination image and identify the critical success factors in this process. The research follows an inductive, qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with two groups of companies: those already operating in China (n = 5) and those preparing to enter the market (n = 5). The interviews were thematically analyzed to extract key patterns and insights. The findings reveal that successful companies operate in the luxury segment, rely on prior international experience, and often use local intermediaries. Firms planning to internationalize highlight quality differentiation, brand authenticity, and innovation as strategic advantages. These insights support the role of niche positioning and cultural adaptation in building both commercial success and a refined international image of Portugal. This study contributes to the literature by linking internationalization and destination branding through industry-specific case evidence and offers practical implications for managers targeting emerging markets like China. The imperative to decarbonize global energy systems and enhance energy security necessitates a transition towards ecofuels, broadly classified as biofuels, waste-derived fuels, and electrofuels (e-Fuels). The primary goal of this review is to provide a holistic and comparative evaluation of these three pivotal ecofuel pillars under a unified framework, identifying their strategic niches in the energy transition by critically assessing their interconnected technical, economic, and policy challenges. It offers a comparative dissection of inherent resource constraints, spanning biomass availability, the immense scale of renewable electricity required for e-Fuels, sustainable carbon dioxide (CO2) sourcing, and the complexities of utilizing non-biodegradable wastes, identifying that true feedstock sustainability and holistic lifecycle management are paramount, cross-cutting limitations for all pathways. This review critically highlights how the current global reliance on fossil fuels for electricity production (approx. 60%) and the upstream emissions embodied in renewable energy infrastructure challenge the climate neutrality claims of ecofuels, particularly e-Fuels, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive well-to-wheels (WtW) lifecycle assessments (LCAs) over simpler tank-to-wheels (TtW) approaches. This perspective is crucial as emerging regulations demand significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions (70–100%) compared to fossil fuels. Ultimately, this synthesis argues for a nuanced, technologically neutral deployment strategy, prioritizing specific ecofuels for hard-to-abate sectors, and underscores the urgent need for stable, long-term policies coupled with robust and transparent LCA methodologies to guide a truly sustainable energy transition. China has made a major strategic decision to build world-class universities and first-class disciplines (abbreviation: Double First-Class), aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Chinese higher education. Industry-specific universities have a special historical evolution and distinctive characteristics. China’s industry-specific universities have always played an important role in the higher education system and made significant contributions to the development of the country. However, the “Double First-Class” initiative presents both opportunities and challenges for industry-specific universities. This paper employs the SWOT analysis method to conduct a qualitative analysis of industry-specific universities and proposes a strategic matrix for decision-making. At the same time, from a niche perspective, this paper explores the sustainable development strategies of these institutions within the initiative through the calculation of niche breadth, niche overlap, and their relationship analysis. The research results indicate that the “Double First-Class” initiative has played a positive role in promoting the expansion of universities’ ecological niches. However, it has also led to excessive niche overlap and intense competition. Industry-specific universities face opportunities and challenges in terms of structure, strategy, and policy for their sustainable development. Key findings highlight the importance of strategic alignment with national demand, industry cooperation, and policy orientation for sustainable growth. This paper proposes recommendations for the construction of a sustainable development framework, implementation of strategic initiatives, and policy guidance for universities with industrial characteristics from three perspectives: government, industry, and universities. Campus living labs (CLLs) foster sustainability within higher education institutions (HEIs), yet their institutional embedding remains challenging. Relying on the idea of strategic niche management (SNM), this paper examines three processes key to protected space development: vision articulation, social network building, and learning. This research explores the factors that enable the development of protected spaces for successful CLLs. Using an embedded case study approach, seven sustainability initiatives were analysed at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. We found that the perceived success in CLLs is related to sustainability outcomes, scaling pathways, and process outcomes. In addition, different groups of factors driving the development of protected spaces were identified: broad factors that contribute to all or multiple key processes, specific factors that support only one process, and peripheral factors that were less frequently mentioned. ‘Organisational culture’ appeared to be an important broad factor contributing to all key processes. ‘Resources’ and ‘Coordination’ were also important, specifically for social network building, but also mentioned as currently being absent by many. Finally, this paper contributes by incorporating a new factor, ‘Orchestration’, a subtle yet strategic form of coordination. It offers insights for HEIs aiming to develop CLLs as part of their sustainability strategy. Full article

This study aimed to explore the genetic and functional diversity of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (Lpb. plantarum) strains from wild fermented foods to identify traits that are useful for food innovation. The growing demand for clean-label, plant-based, and functionally enriched fermented foods exposes the limitations of current industrial fermentation practices, which rely on standardized lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains with limited metabolic plasticity. This constraint hinders the development of new food formulations and the replacement of conventional additives. To address this gap, 343 LAB strains were analyzed, including 69 Lpb plantarum strains, isolated from five minimally processed, spontaneously fermented matrices: fermented millet, kombucha, and sourdough (plant-based), wild fermented mountain milk, and natural whey starter (animal-based). Whole-genome sequencing was performed to assess phylogenetic relationships and to annotate genes encoding carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) and antimicrobial compounds. The results revealed a marked strain-level diversity. Glycoside hydrolase (GH) families GH13 and GH1 were widely distributed, while GH25 and GH32 showed variable presence across clusters. Strains grouped into clusters enriched with plant-based isolates exhibited distinct CAZyme profiles adapted to complex carbohydrates. Clusters with animal-based strains exhibited a broader gene repertoire related to bacteriocin biosynthesis. These findings highlight the untapped potential of wild fermented food environments as reservoirs of Lpb. plantarum with unique genomic traits. Harnessing this diversity can expand the functional capabilities of starter cultures, promoting more sustainable, adaptive, and innovative fermentation systems. This study underscores the strategic value of underexploited microbial niches in meeting the evolving demands of modern food production. Full article

Green banking has become a concept of interest, particularly with the focus on the role played by banks in pursuing Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action. This study is distinguished from previous ones in that it aimed at investigating the multi-regional view on green banking practices/activities around the world with a special emphasis on the opportunities and challenges that various banks encounter in different geographical areas. A systematic review approach was adopted based on the Web of Science and Scopus databases, in which 159 articles were retrieved and 62 articles synthesized through a thematic analysis. The research process was demonstrated through a Prisma 2020 flowchart. Key multiregional green banking activities identified include digital banking, green loan or sukuk products for Islam-dominated economies, green services and investments, and financing of green infrastructure. In essence, the implementation of green banking is either directly through active green lending and greening their operations or indirectly through enhancing conditions. The key challenges identified include regulatory handles, social economic and culture hinderances, transition risk and the high cost of compliance, greenwashing concerns, and weak investor confidence. The most prevalent opportunities included green banking as a strategic competitive advantage, emerging market niche, and as a strategy for long-term climate risk management. Full article

Saudi Arabia has emerged as a key middle power, leveraging niche diplomacy to expand its global influence. This study examines how the Kingdom strategically employs mediation, religious diplomacy, humanitarian aid, energy leadership, and sports diplomacy to shape regional and international dynamics. Unlike great powers, middle powers focus on specialized areas where they hold a comparative advantage, allowing them to exert influence despite material constraints. Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic recalibration aligns with its Vision 2030 agenda, prioritizing economic diversification, regional stability, and multilateral engagement. Saudi Arabia enhances its geopolitical significance by positioning itself as a mediator in regional conflicts, reinforcing its religious leadership, investing in sports diplomacy, and maintaining energy dominance. Urban green spaces are critical yet understudied areas where anthropogenic and biological sounds interact. This study investigates how vegetation structure mediates the acoustic partitioning of urban soundscapes and informs sustainable forestry management. Through the principal component analysis (PCA) of 1–11 kHz frequency bands, we identified anthropogenic sounds (1–2 kHz) and biological sounds (2–11 kHz). Within bio-acoustic communities, PCA further revealed three positively correlated sub-clusters (2–4 kHz, 5–6 kHz, and 6–11 kHz), suggesting cooperative niche partitioning among avian, amphibian, and insect vocalizations. Linear mixed models highlighted vegetation’s dual role: mature tree stands (explaining 19.9% variance) and complex vertical structures (leaf-height diversity: 12.2%) significantly enhanced biological soundscapes (R2m = 0.43) while suppressing anthropogenic noise through canopy stratification (32.3% variance explained). Based on our findings, we suggest that an acoustic data-driven framework—comprising (1) the preservation of mature stands with multi-layered canopies to enhance bioacoustic resilience, (2) strategic planting of mid-story vegetation to disrupt low-frequency noise propagation, and (3) real-time soundscape monitoring to balance biophony and anthropophony allocation—can contribute to promoting sustainable urban forestry management. This article explores the challenge of developing a sustainable cultural brand for cities that are primarily perceived as tourist destinations. While major urban hubs like Berlin (DE), Edinburgh (UK), and Lisbon (PT) have successfully transitioned from being known mainly for tourism to becoming recognized cultural destinations, the process behind this transformation remains underexplored, especially when it comes to mid-sized cities. How does a town move beyond its touristic image to build a lasting cultural identity? What strategies enable this shift, and what role do different stakeholders play? Focusing on the Romanian city of Brașov, a scenic destination in Transylvania mostly known for its natural environment and medieval architecture, the paper addresses this gap by investigating how a cultural brand can be developed through strategic marketing efforts. Using an integrated approach that combines two qualitative studies and one quantitative analysis, the research provides new insights into (i) cultural marketing strategies that can enhance Brașov’s city brand; (ii) stakeholder perspectives on developing Brașov’s cultural identity; and (iii) the role of Generation Z, whose influence on urban cultural branding has, so far, been minimally researched, in shaping the cultural future of cities, particularly Brașov. Some of the findings highlight key areas for developing Brașov’s cultural brand, including expanding nightlife activities, introducing more contemporary and year-round themed festivals, and tailoring promotional efforts to the short attention spans of the “TikTok generation”. Participants emphasized the need for a more diverse range of cultural events, including experimental and niche performances, alongside stronger educational initiatives to encourage long-term engagement by involving schools and universities. The results offer actionable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and cultural leaders seeking to develop a city brand centered around culture, focusing on long-term identity and community engagement rather than solely on tourism. Due to the current climate situation, it is necessary to apply new methods that support environmental, social, and energy challenges to respond to global emergencies. In this regard, Living Labs have increased their popularity as a strategic tool to promote innovation from the local level and proximity. This study aims to detect the patterns, trends, and coherence of the so-called Living Labs. For this purpose, a characterisation of Living Labs has been undertaken that focuses on energy, environmental, and social issues in Europe to support urban transition. It concludes that Living Labs do not have a single solution. They are highly influenced by the current European trends and promoted topics. They can be multi-dimensional (digital and physical), multi-scale (from small, such as the product, to large, such as the territory) and multi-purpose. It is determined that there is an absence of working in real-life environments and some of the Living Lab’s principles. Among the topics, the most common ones are social inclusion, environment, energy, health, and IoT. The implemented scale in a building and the product on the application scale are the most frequent ones. Urban Living Labs are identified as a niche opportunity because of their low current development. Full article

In the contemporary and dynamic business landscape, the establishment of a loyal customer base is a fundamental imperative for long-term organizational viability. This research undertakes a comprehensive exploration into the formation of customer loyalty within the niche of pet-related vertical e-commerce, focusing on South Korea, and leverages advanced machine learning methodologies. We identify key factors that significantly impact customer loyalty development using various machine learning models, including logistic regression analysis, decision trees, support vector machines, random forests, and XGBoost. Our empirical study shows that encouraging customer transactions plays a crucial and transformative role in building loyalty regardless of the day of the week. Furthermore, the strategic promotion of mobile application notifications and the active encouragement of customer participation through product reviews are indispensable strategies for strengthening and solidifying customer loyalty. These findings have crucial implications not only for enterprises within the pet-related e-commerce sector but also for the broader e-commerce domain. We hereby propose a methodology to identify loyal customers and systematically analyze the key factors that influence their formation using machine learning in the vertical e-commerce pet industry. We investigate the use of Facebook in the Danish system over a two-month period in 2021, with an increased political polarization, during the COVID-19 lockdown. Based on the analysis of 5093 posts, we find indications of how party-system dynamics shape niche parties and catch-all parties’ use of Facebook. While catch-all party members share political information with relatively low reach, niche parties are much more inclined to criticize opponents, a strategy that often produces higher interactivity. Finally, we discuss the impact of party-system dynamics on the strategic use of Facebook among different parties. Our findings indicate that the social media use of niche parties with irrelevant features is often shaped by a centrifugal logic (competition towards the poles), while the social media use of catch-all parties is often shaped by a centripetal dynamic (competition towards the center). Spodoptera frugiperda, the fall armyworm (FAW), is a widespread and polyphagous crop pest, causing serious crop yield losses worldwide, especially maize and other cereals. Biological control (biocontrol) is considered as the generally safer and more environmentally benign strategies compared to chemical insecticides in managing FAW. Chelonus insularis and Eiphosoma laphygmae are two promising classical biocontrol parasitoids against FAW. However, the optimal control areas for FAW with the two parasitoids in its invasive ranges remain unclear. This study is first time to integrate species distribution models and hotspot analysis to estimate the optimal areas for controlling FAW with these two parasitoids worldwide. Key variables influencing distribution include human influence index, temperature, and precipitation. The optimal control areas of FAW with C. insularis and E. laphygmae are in most of sub-Saharan Africa, Mediterranean regions, eastern, southern, and southeastern Asia, and Oceania. These areas are expected to expand to high-latitude areas under changing climatic conditions. Niche comparisons indicated that the FAW and C. insularis niches were closely aligned. Chelonus insularis and E. laphygmae are potentially effective against FAW in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Our findings offer insights into the strategic use of the two parasitoids against FAW worldwide. Full article

Fostering niche leaders to achieve technological breakthroughs has become a national strategic priority in emerging markets in order to overcome technology blockades and drive technological progress. Previous research indicates that achieving breakthrough innovation, particularly for firms with resource constraints, is a multifaceted phenomenon occurring across various levels. Based on the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework, this paper aims to examine the influence of technological, organizational, and environmental factors on the breakthrough innovation of niche leaders in emerging markets from a configurational perspective. Using dynamic qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), we analyzed panel data from 87 Chinese niche leaders (2018–2023) through inter-group, intra-group, and pooled comparisons to uncover distinct configurational pathways to breakthrough innovation. Our findings reveal three effective pathways: an R&D-driven innovation pathway, a digital transformation-driven innovation pathway, and a comprehensive support innovation pathway. Additionally, we identified two configurational pathways leading to the absence of high-breakthrough innovation: the conservative management configuration, and the digital island configuration. Our results underscore the essential role of government subsidies, the complementary impact of digital transformation and R&D, and the restrictive effect of rigid governance structures. Furthermore, these pathways demonstrate significant regional variations and temporal evolution, highlighting the context-dependent nature of breakthrough innovation in emerging economies. Inclusive Innovation Governance for Just Transitions: Insights from the Bean Agri-Food System in the Brunca Region of Costa Rica

This study explores how an inclusive governance of “niche” innovations with family farmers enables or limits the realization of just transitions in family farming at different scales, from the local to the national levels. The research focuses on a case study in the Brunca region of Costa Rica, which has pioneered innovations for bean research with family farmers. The primary source of information for the study was in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders. Secondary information comes from a desk review of the relevant policies and strategic documents from the relevant authorities. Lastly, a semi-scoping review was conducted to explore gender and intergenerational gaps in plant breeding, as well as potential conflicts between plant breeding and on-farm agro-diversity. The inclusive governance of bean research contributes to the realization of just-transition dimensions of justice, such as recognitional, procedural, and distributional justice, as a result of farmers’ engagement in participatory plant-breeding processes, and due to the coordination between different institutions at the local and national levels. Progress has been made in terms of the recognition and participation of farmers in research and in decision-making locally. The findings show interactions between the local and national scales, in terms of the commercialization of farmers’ seeds. However, the Costa Rican program for bean research struggles to engage family farmers in national decision-making processes and falls short of addressing equality and intergenerational issues. It also faces challenges in reaching a balance between short-term income generation and long-term conservation of agro-biodiversity on the farm. Fostering just transitions in family farming would require a greater inclusion of women and youth by the Costa Rican bean system. This implies allocating resources to increase their capacities and participation in bean research, as well as in decision-making at all levels. This is imperative and could be achieved if the government and relevant stakeholders align their strategic objectives and priorities to shorten gender and intergenerational gaps within the bean production system.
