This study presents the results of an investigation into the potential use of the DiagBelt+ magnetic diagnostic system for assessing the quality of conveyor belt splices. Splices in conveyor belts are susceptible to damage and irregularities resulting from assembly errors, improper vulcanization parameters, or unfavorable operational conditions. Detecting geometric deviations from the reference standard after splice fabrication can serve as a component of QA/QC systems. Later deviations may indicate material or fabrication defects. To date, applications of the DiagBelt+ system have been limited to locating damage within the belt and its splices. Recently, efforts have been made to extend the system’s functionality to include splice diagnostics. This study was conducted under laboratory conditions on an ST2500 belt featuring five splices (three bias and two straight splices). Data acquisition was performed under various configurations of measurement parameters, including sensor-to-belt distance, belt travel speed, and system sensitivity threshold. For each splice, the signal width was measured and analyzed as a potential indicator of splice geometry and quality. The results indicate that the DiagBelt+ system can be effectively used for splice diagnostics. Work has commenced on automating the splice quality assessment process. Full article

This article demonstrates that machine fires caused by a belt transmission are a fundamental and current research problem. The aim of this work is to identify the hazards during thermal decomposition and combustion of a transmission with a toothed belt, used as a drive or conveyor belt to synchronise mechanisms. The analysis distinguished belts in a polyurethane or rubber cushion with a Kevlar, steel, or polyurethane cord. The belts’ composite structure can be a source of unpredictable emissions and toxic substances of varying concentrations and compositions during thermal decomposition and combustion. To evaluate the compared belts, a testing methodology was used to determine the toxicometric indicators (WLC50SM), according to which it was possible to assess the toxicity of the thermal decomposition and combustion products following EU standards. The analysis was carried out based on the recorded emissions of chemical compounds during the thermal decomposition and combustion of polymer materials at three different temperatures (450, 550, and 750 °C). The least favourable toxicometric indicators (WLC50SM) are found in rubber cushion belts, which are very toxic (about 13 g/m3) and toxic (about 40 g/m3) materials. The results show that thermoplastic polyurethane cushion belts are moderately toxic materials, with a WLC50SM index ranging from 411 g/m3 to 598 g/m3. Full article

Because of their superior performance, flexible strain sensors are used in a wide range of applications, including medicine and health, human–computer interaction, and precision manufacturing. Flexible strain sensors outperform conventional silicon-based sensors in high-strain environments. However, most current studies report complex flexible sensor preparation processes, and research focuses on enhancing and improving one parameter or property of the sensors, ignoring the feasibility of flexible strain sensors for applications in various fields. Since the mechanical properties of flexible sensors can be well combined with rubber conveyor belts, in this work polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as a flexible substrate by a simple way of multiple drop coating. Graphene-based flexible strain sensor films that can be used for strain detection at the joints of steel cord core conveyor belts were successfully fabricated. The results of the tests show that the sensor has a high sensitivity and can achieve a fast response (response time: 43 ms). Furthermore, the sensor can still capture the conveyor belt strain after withstanding high pressure (1.2–1.4 MPa) and high temperature (150 °C) during the belt vulcanization process. This validates the feasibility of using flexible strain sensors in steel wire core conveyor belts and has some potential for detecting abnormal strains in steel wire core conveyor belt, broadening the application field of flexible sensors. Results of tests into the energy-efficiency of belt conveyor transportation systems indicate that the energy consumption of their drive mechanisms can be limited by lowering the main resistances in the conveyor. The main component of these resistances is represented by belt indentation rolling resistance. Limiting its value will allow a reduction in the amount of energy consumed by the drive mechanisms. This article presents a test rig which enables uncomplicated evaluations of such rolling resistances. It also presents the results of comparative tests performed for five steel-cord conveyor belts. The tests involved a standard belt, a refurbished belt and three energy-saving belts. As temperature significantly influences the values of belt indentation rolling resistance, the tests were performed in both positive and negative temperatures. The results indicate that when compared with the standard belt, the refurbished and the energy-efficient belts generate higher and lower indentation rolling resistances, respectively. In order to demonstrate practical advantages resulting from the use of energy-saving belts, this article also includes calculations of the power demand of a conveyor drive mechanism during one calendar year, as measured on a belt conveyor operated in a mine. The replacement of a standard belt with a refurbished belt generates a power demand higher by 4.8%, and with an energy-efficient belt—lower by 15.3%. Full article

Breaks in the so-called “continuous” (unspliced) belt sections, and not in the spliced areas, are infrequent but do happen in practice. This article presents some aspects, which may account for such breaks in conveyor belts. It indicates the so-called “sensitive points” in design, especially in the transition section of the conveyor belt and in identifying the actual strength of the belt. The presented results include the influence of the width of a belt specimen on the identified belt tensile strength. An increase in the specimen width entails a decrease in the belt strength. The research involved develops a universal theoretical model of the belt on a transition section of a troughed conveyor in which, in the case of steel-cord belts, the belt is composed of cords and layers of rubber, and in the case of a textile belt, of narrow strips. The article also describes geometrical forces in the transition section of the belt and an illustrative analysis of loads acting on the belt. Attention was also devoted to the influence of the belt type on the non-uniform character of loads in the transition section of the conveyor. A replacement of a conveyor belt with a belt having different elastic properties may increase the non-uniformity of belt loads in the transition section of the conveyor, even by 100%. Full article

The transverse vibration frequency of conveyor belts is an important parameter describing the dynamic characteristics of a belt conveyor. This parameter is most often identified from theoretical relationships, which are derived on the basis of an assumption that the belt is a stationary elastic string. Belt vibrations have a number of analogies to other tension member systems, such as, for example, power transmission belts. Some research findings suggest that in the case of a limited length of the belt section, a more accurate description of its vibration can be obtained with a beam model rather than with a string model. Experimental research has so far mostly revolved around measurements of stationary belts. This article presents the results of vibration measurements performed for a moving belt and obtained for various operating parameters of the conveyor, as well as for several configurations of the distance between idler supports. The analysis was conducted on a moving steel-cord belt. Belts of this type are commonly used in the majority of mines and industrial plants. The measurement results were compared with the model of a string and with the model of a beam in tension. Both of the theoretical models allowed for the belt speed, whose influence was demonstrated in both theoretical calculations and experimental tests to be negligible. On the other hand, the tensile force in the belt was observed to have a significant impact on the vibration frequency. Depending on the idler spacing, the measurement results are approximate to those of the beam model or of the string model. For spacing smaller than 1.6 m, the belt shows properties approximate to an elastic beam, while for spacing greater than 1.6 m, the belt behaviour can be better represented through a string model. A beam model is, therefore, more applicable in analyses of vibrations in the upper strand of the belt, while a string model is more useful in analyses of vibrations in the lower strand. Full article

This paper presents the identification and classification of steel cord failures in the conveyor belt core based on an analysis of a two-dimensional image of magnetic field changes recorded using the Diagbelt system around scanned failures in the test belt. The obtained set of identified changes in images, obtained for numerous parameters settings of the device, were the base for statistical analysis. This analysis makes it possible to determine the Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient between the parameters being changed and the image of the failures. In the second stage of the research, artificial intelligence methods were applied to construct a multilayer neural network (MLP) and to teach it appropriate identification of damage. In both methods, the same data sets were used, which made it possible to compare methods. Full article

Damage detection in complex mechanical structures is important for cost-effective and safe operation. Conveyor belts with steel cords are used for bulk material transport in mining companies. Due to harsh environmental conditions, both covers and cords are subjected to damage. As lengths of conveyors may vary from dozens of meters to kilometers, a belt loop consists of many connected belt pieces. Thus, the condition of splices between belt pieces is also critical. For both steel cord damage/wear detection and splice condition evaluations the NDT techniques based on magnetic field measurement and variability analysis are used. To obtain appropriate resolution, multi-channel data are collected. Here we propose a pre-processing technique developed for signal synchronization for biased splices data. The biased splices mean a phase shift between signals from a multi-channel sensor due to the design technology of the splice. As the quality of the splice is related to the appropriate precision of splice production, splice evaluation is defined as a similarity analysis of each signal with respect to the estimated pattern. Due to the mentioned phase shift, signals should be "synchronized" first, before final analysis. In industrial conditions, many factors may influence the signal shape. Thus, the problem of automated synchronization by shifting the signals may be defined as a multidimensional optimization problem. Here, we proposed to use a genetic algorithm with an algorithmically simple cost function for that purpose. In this paper, the authors propose an automated procedure applied to real measurement data and final results. A multidimensional optimization has been compared to simple signal shifting according to several criteria, and GA-based results were the best. Full article

Skewness Decision Tree Support Vector Machine (SDTSVM) algorithm is widely known as a supervised learning model for multi-class classification problems. However, the classification accuracy of the SDTSVM algorithm depends on the perfect selection of its parameters and the classification order. Therefore, an improved SDTSVM (ISDTSVM) algorithm is proposed in order to improve the classification accuracy of steel cord conveyor belt defects. In the proposed model, the classification order is determined by the sum of the Euclidean distances between multi-class sample centers and the parameters are optimized by the inertia weight Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the ISDTSVM algorithm with different feature space, experiments were conducted on multiple UCI (University of California Irvine) data sets and steel cord conveyor belt defects using the proposed ISDTSVM algorithm and the conventional SDTSVM algorithm respectively. The average classification accuracies of five-fold cross-validation were obtained, based on two kinds of kernel functions respectively. For the Vowel, Zoo, and Wine data sets of the UCI data sets, as well as the steel cord conveyor belt defects, the ISDTSVM algorithm improved the classification accuracy by 3%, 3%, 1% and 4% respectively, compared to the SDTSVM algorithm. The classification accuracy of the radial basis function kernel were higher than the polynomial kernel. The results indicated that the proposed ISDTSVM algorithm improved the classification accuracy significantly, compared to the conventional SDTSVM algorithm. Full article

In order to reduce the noise of a defect electromagnetic signal of the steel cord conveyor belt used in coal mines, a new signal noise reduction method by combined use of the improved threshold wavelet and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is proposed. Firstly, the denoising method based on the improved threshold wavelet is applied to reduce the noise of a defect electromagnetic signal obtained by an electromagnetic testing system. Then, the EMD is used to decompose the denoised signal and then the effective Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) is extracted by the dominant eigenvalue strategy. Finally, the signal reconstruction is carried out by utilizing the obtained IMF. In order to verify the proposed noise reduction method, the experiments are carried out in two cases including the defective joint and steel wire rope break. The experimental results show that the proposed method in this paper obtains the higher Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) for the defect electromagnetic signal noise reduction of steel cord conveyor belts.
