This concept paper outlines an implementation strategy for a mandatory training programme using the ADDIE instructional design model for delivery to nurses and other health professionals in an interprofessional education (IPE) environment). Background: Competence in Basic Life Support (BLS) is a lifesaving requirement for health professionals in clinical settings to ensure patient safety and accreditation outcomes. It is essential that health professionals are supported in attending mandatory training, including BLS. To inform learning and teaching strategies, it is useful to apply theoretical perspectives to the development of mandatory staff training methods. However, various training models exist, and few are grounded in instructional design theory to the unique environment for BLS in IPE. Method: A theory-based implementation strategy is outlined for a mandatory interprofessional training programme including BLS, using the ADDIE model to enhance patient outcomes. ADDIE is an instructional design framework comprising five elements: Assess, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate; describing a learning methodology that can be readily applied to mandatory training in IPE. Results: Through its iterative capability, the ADDIE model promotes learner needs and rapid acquisition of clinical skills that improve training accessibility. The strategy can equip educators with teaching skills based on a robust theoretical model, with potential to promote nursing and health professional attendance for mandatory training. Conclusions: Mandatory health professional training that addresses a theory informed strategy framed by the ADDIE model can support interprofessional collaboration and consistent competency across healthcare teams. This strategy has potential to contribute by demonstrating how instructional design can be operationalised to improve the effectiveness and engaging approach to BLS training and education to the unique dynamics of an interprofessional environment. Background: Emotional safety is increasingly recognized as crucial for high-quality patient care, encompassing a patient’s sense of security, courteous treatment, being heard, and a peaceful environment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of patients and providers (doctors and nurses) regarding emotional harm and safety in relation to hospitalized patients. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study in public-sector teaching hospitals in Peshawar, Pakistan. Data were collected after we obtained informed consent using individual interviews with 15 providers, namely, doctors (n = 7) and nurses (n = 8), and five focus group discussions (FGDs) with 25 hospitalized patients. Data from both the interviews and FGDs were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach to thematic analysis. Results: The key themes revealed by the providers’ perspectives were factors contributing to emotional harm, staff-related factors, coping mechanisms and solutions, and the impact of prior experiences and involvement. The main themes that emerged from the patients’ perspectives were anxiety upon admission, the impact of communication, emotional stress due to treatment delays, systemic/bureaucratic challenges, financial burden, a lack of emotional support, and post-hospitalization concerns. The consistent perspectives shared by both patients and providers included the impact of systemic factors, communication issues, the role of staff attitude/behavior, financial concerns, and the influence of prior experiences. Conclusions: This study highlights the complex interplay of systemic, staff-related, and patient-specific factors. It suggests a need to improve communication, staff support, administrative processes, financial counseling, emotional support integration, and discharge planning to minimize harm and create a patient-centered environment. Higher education has long been subject to feminist critique, contesting traditional practices, with calls for transformative pedagogies that empower marginalised students, address social injustices and promote gender equality. Despite this, most classrooms in Western European universities remain largely unchanged, with educators facing the difficulty of imagining and/or enacting decolonial futures within their curricula. However, some progress has been made, particularly the inclusion of transnational scholarship in syllabi and a turn to transformative pedagogies, which allow for alternative ways of interdisciplinary knowing to enter academia. In this paper, we examine this coming together of approaches which promote dialogue and personal reflection to restructure discussions on equality, gender and knowledge production in the ‘classroom’. Using a creative critical account of feminist ethnography conducted at a Western European university, we present and discuss two illustrative vignettes about cultural mapping and critical fabulation, considering how dissonant voices have challenged Western concepts, exemplifying transformative pedagogy working in tandem with transnational thought. Key insights from the study identify approaches for facilitation of more open and richer discussions to reshape staff and student perspectives of gender, equality and knowledge production. Background: Psychological problems post-stroke can negatively impact stroke survivors. Although general psychological services exist (e.g., NHS Talking Therapies), access remains limited, particularly for individuals with post-stroke communication and cognitive impairments. Stroke service staff report low confidence in managing psychological distress. This study is the first to explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing a novel intervention package comprising a cross-service care pathway and staff training to enhance post-stroke psychological provision. Methods: Staff from stroke and mental health services in four UK regions, recruited through purposive sampling to ensure diversity of services and professional roles, participated in semi-structured interviews or focus groups, guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), before and after implementation of the intervention package. Pre-implementation interviews/groups identified anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementation and training needs, informing the development of site-specific intervention packages; post-implementation interviews/groups explored experienced barriers, facilitators and perceptions of the intervention. Interviews underwent thematic analysis using the TDF. Results: Fifty-five staff participated pre-implementation and seventeen post-implementation, representing stroke (e.g., nurse, physiotherapist, consultant) and psychology (e.g., counsellor, psychological therapist) roles across acute, rehabilitation, community, and voluntary services. Challenges anticipated pre-implementation included: limited specialist post-stroke psychological support; low staff confidence; and fragmented service pathways. Post-implementation findings indicated increased staff knowledge and confidence, enhanced screening and referral processes, and stronger inter-service collaboration. Implementation success varied across sites (with some sites showing greater ownership and sustainability of the intervention) and across staff roles (with therapy staff more likely than nursing staff to have received training). Conclusions: Effective implementation of an intervention package to increase psychological provision post-stroke requires staff engagement at all levels across all services. Staff investment influenced ownership of the intervention package, beliefs about priorities and overall enhancement of service capability. Full article

Background: Today, young people face a variety of social, environmental and psychological challenges, making them more vulnerable to developing mental health issues. Worldwide 15% of adolescents experience poor mental health, with the majority not seeking help or receiving care. Therefore, it is critical that youth mental health services become more youth-friendly to encourage help-seeking. This study examines a new pilot volunteer model of care introduced into a youth mental health service in Melbourne, Australia. The aim of the study is to explore staff perspectives of the volunteer model. Methods: A qualitative research design was undertaken using semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Eight staff participated. Data was thematically analysed using an inductive approach. Results: Two main themes, ‘promoting service use’ and ‘implementation to practice’, were generated, along with sub-themes. The themes highlight benefits to staff such as reductions in workload and benefits to volunteers through the gaining of experience and knowledge. However, there was a need to support volunteers through greater training and supervision. Conclusions: Volunteers in youth mental health services can create a welcoming environment which enhances access and engagement for young people seeking help. Volunteers in a youth mental health setting can enhance accessibility, reducing staff workload and fostering meaningful engagement. Full article

This study aims to explore how Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) influences Jordanian banks’ performance. It focuses on four CDR dimensions—“social, technological, economic, and environmental”—and examines the mediating role of firm size in these relationships. This study is the first to empirically test the mediating effect of firm size in the relationship between CDR and firm performance in the Jordanian banking sector, providing a novel perspective on how digital ethics shape organizational success. Data were collected through a structured survey from 299 bank employees in Jordan. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to assess the direct and indirect effects of CDR dimensions on firm performance, with firm size tested as a mediating variable. All four dimensions of CDR significantly and positively affect firm performance. Additionally, firm size plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between CDR and firm performance, indicating that larger banks may better leverage digital responsibility initiatives to enhance performance. The study relies on self-reported data from a single country (Jordan), which may limit generalizability. Future studies could adopt a longitudinal design or expand to other MENA countries for comparative analysis and broader insights. The findings suggest that Jordanian banks should invest in and prioritize CDR strategies, especially in economic and technological domains, to improve their organizational outcomes and stakeholder relationships. Enhancing firm size may amplify the positive impact of CDR. The findings of this study are robust, as validated by further analysis utilizing data from a customer survey. The results derived from customer viewpoints correspond with staff data, substantiating the beneficial influence of Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) on banking performance and affirming the substantial mediating effect of company size. Background: Children with food allergies can present with paediatric feeding disorder (PFD). However, access to coordinated multidisciplinary services to support these children in Australia is inconsistent. To date, the availability of services or the perceived care needs of Australian health professionals working with this population have not been formally explored. Methods: A web-based survey was distributed to health professionals in Australia. Quantitative demographic data were summarised using descriptive statistics, and open-ended responses were analysed using content analysis. Results: The final sample comprised 98 responses, with speech pathologists representing the largest professional group (n = 39; 40%). A majority (59%) worked in hospital-based services. Open-ended responses were coded utilising content analysis. Three categories were developed including (1) service delivery, (2) intervention, and (3) resources. Services were commonly impacted by long wait times, limited staff training, and inconsistencies between hospital and community care. Additionally, mental health support was frequently reported as insufficient. Conclusions: The findings from this study underscore the need for integrated services for children with food allergies and paediatric feeding disorder. Recommended areas for future research include exploring caregiver perspectives and the impact of food allergies and paediatric feeding disorder, and consideration of co-designed studies to inform service improvement initiatives. Spiritual Intelligence in Healthcare Practice and Servant Leadership as Predictors of Work Life Quality in Peruvian Nurses

Introduction: Work life quality (WLQ) in nursing is a critical factor that influences both staff well-being and the quality of care provided to patients. Spiritual intelligence (SI) and servant leadership (SL) have been identified as potential positive predictors of WLQ, as they facilitate resilience, job satisfaction, and stress management in highly demanding hospital environments. However, the specific relationship between these constructs in the Peruvian nursing context has not yet been thoroughly explored. Objective: We aimed to examine the impact of spiritual intelligence and servant leadership on the work life quality of Peruvian nurses, assessing their predictive role through a structural equation modeling approach. Methods: A cross-sectional and explanatory study was conducted with a sample of 134 Peruvian nurses (M = 36.29 years, SD = 7.3). Validated Spanish-language instruments were used to measure SI, SL, and WLQ. Structural equation modeling (SEM) with a robust maximum likelihood estimator (MLR) was employed to evaluate the relationships between the variables. Results: Spiritual intelligence showed a positive correlation with WLQ (r = 0.40, p < 0.01) and with servant leadership (r = 0.44, p < 0.01). Likewise, servant leadership had a significant relationship with WLQ (r = 0.53, p < 0.01). The structural model demonstrated a good fit (χ2 = 1314.240, df = 970, CFI = 0.96, TLI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.08). The hypothesis that SI positively predicts WLQ was confirmed (β = 0.41, p < 0.001), as was the significant effect of SL on WLQ (β = 0.26, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results indicate that both spiritual intelligence and servant leadership are key predictors of work life quality in Peruvian nurses. SI contributes to developing a transcendent perspective on work and greater resilience, while SL fosters a positive and motivating organizational environment. It is recommended to implement training programs and leadership strategies focused on these constructs to enhance work life quality in the healthcare sector. Full article

This article describes a case study of the partnership between Healthy Birth Initiatives, a community-based organization (CBO) and Black-led public health nurse home visiting program, and the maternal health division of the Providence Health System located in the Pacific Northwest. This study’s purpose was to explore the formation, significance, and impact of this partnership from the perspectives of staff and leadership members from both organizations. We conducted a case study through qualitative interviews with staff, participant observation, and debrief of leadership meetings. We completed a hybrid deductive–inductive thematic analysis of the data, followed by member checking with study participants and other key interest holders. Key facilitators of the CBO–health system partnership included the vital role of leaders in prioritizing the partnership; health system willingness to incorporate new information from the CBO to improve care; and health system utilization of resources to institutionalize changes that emerged from this partnership. Challenges to the CBO–health system partnership included CBO resource limitations; fragmented referral processes and information sharing; and the persistence required to nurture the relationship without formalized roles. This study contributes to the literature by offering staff perspectives on how a CBO–health system partnership formed, successes, early lessons learned, and practical suggestions for how to develop stronger alignment to provide culturally responsive patient-centered care to Black families. Esports is a global industry, with coaches widely regarded as having a pivotal role in facilitating player development and enhancing performance. Despite this, limited research has investigated the developmental experiences of esports coaches and how they are valued by diverse stakeholder groups. Consequently, the aim of this research is to explore global stakeholders’ perspectives towards the developmental experiences of esports coaches. Data were collected via a qualitative online survey completed by 98 participants, representing 28 nationalities, across six esports stakeholder groups (head coach, assistant coach, player, team manager, performance staff, analyst). Following a reflexive thematic analysis process, three themes were generated: (1) Speaking the same language: the importance of playing and knowing the game; (2) Walking the walk: the need for coaching experience to demonstrate competency; and (3) Formal professional learning and development: a bone of contention. By understanding how diverse stakeholders value different developmental experiences, the findings offer unique insights into the contested nature of coach development in esports. This research contributes to the esports coaching literature and provides a foundation for future empirical research into this emerging area, with recommendations and implications for esports coach education and practice discussed. The number of identified neurodivergent individuals in UK higher education, within both student and staff populations, is steadily increasing, yet there is limited evidence on how best to support them. In the context of financial pressures and sector-wide transformation, setting priorities for neurodiversity research is critical to make the most of limited resources. This study used an adapted James Lind Alliance methodology to identify the most pressing research questions concerning neurodiversity in higher education, gathering 385 ‘uncertainties’ (or possible research questions) from 135 students and staff across 37 UK universities. These were refined into 66 indicative research questions spanning 16 categories. Following interim prioritisation and a final consensus workshop, 10 top research priorities were identified. These reflect five key themes: staff knowledge, attitudes and practice; assessment; support; outcomes; and accessibility. This is the first study to systematically establish research priorities for neurodiversity in higher education, providing a foundation for evidence-based change that reflects the perspectives and needs of both neurodivergent students and staff. This paper aims to compare the perceptions of hotel customers and hotel staff regarding the value of green hotel attributes. By examining both stakeholder groups, the study addresses a gap in sustainable hospitality research, which largely overlooks employee perspectives in favour of customer preferences. An exploratory, cross-sectional survey was conducted using structured questionnaires, administered to hotel guests (n = 307) and hotel staff (n = 89) in Porto, Portugal. Respondents rated 15 green hotel attributes using a five-point Likert scale. Demographic data were also collected to analyse perceptual differences across gender, age, income, and education. The results revealed that both customers and staff exhibited environmental awareness, though their prioritisation of specific green practices differed. Customers tended to value visible environmental measures, such as recycling bins, energy-saving light bulbs, and renewable energy signage, while staff placed greater emphasis on operational sustainability aspects, including low-flow plumbing fixtures, refillable soap dispensers, and durable goods used in service areas. These differences reflect the stakeholders’ distinct roles and experiences within the hotel ecosystem. This study enriches the discourse on sustainable hospitality by providing a dual-stakeholder analysis of green hotel attributes using a shared evaluative framework. The findings offer practical insights for hotel managers aligning sustainability strategies with the expectations of both guests and employees, supporting more effective and inclusive green implementation in the lodging sector. Background: This study explored how health professionals construct clinical and psychological meaning based on the location of self-injury on the body, particularly in relation to concealed or visible injuries and how they might inform attributions about risk, self-injury functions, and distress. Methods: This study used qualitative thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 19 health professionals with experience working with self-injury, exploring perceptions and attributions about self-injury in different body locations. Results: Seven themes emerged. In some cases, staff’s attributions aligned with the findings from studies of those who self-injure, such as injuries to areas such as the neck are higher risk. Location was one factor among others, such as injury severity, that staff considered when assessing the risk of infection or suicide. Staff often viewed visible injuries as less risky and attributed them to interpersonal communicative functions, and concealed injuries to intrapersonal factors, though not all staff shared these perspectives. Some staff considered other potential drivers of injury location, including past experiences such as trauma, demographic factors, mental health diagnoses, and exposure to social influences. Some staff described the practical determinants of injury location, such as ease of access, and considered the impact of self-injury location on themselves and their colleagues. Conclusions: Injury location can influence staff perceptions of risk, self-injury functions and distress, underscoring the need for individualized assessment and formulation of each self-injury episode to ensure appropriate risk management. Staff training should be adapted to address injury location to improve understanding, raise awareness of related attributions, and enhance the development of clinical skills. Organizations should support staff in their role due to the potential emotional impact of working with individuals who self-injure and are at risk of suicide. Future research should investigate whether location-based attributions are associated with unintended clinical consequences, such as inaccuracies in risk assessment and formulation. Full article

Predictive Factors Aiding in the Estimation of Intraoperative Resources in Gastric Cancer Oncologic Surgery

Background/Objectives: Operating rooms represent valuable and pivotal units of any hospital. Therefore, their management affects healthcare service delivery through rescheduling, staff shortage/overtime, cost inefficiency, and patient dissatisfaction, among others. To optimize scheduling, we aim to assess preoperative evaluation criteria that influence the prediction of surgery duration for gastric cancer (GC) patients. In GC, radical surgery with curative intent is the ideal treatment. Nevertheless, the intervention sometimes must be palliative if the patient’s status and tumor staging prove too advanced. Methods: A 6-year retrospective cohort study was performed in a tertiary care hospital, including all cases diagnosed with GC (ICD-10 code C16), confirmed through histopathology, and undergoing surgical treatment (N = 108). Results: The results of our study confirm male predominance (63.89%) among GC surgery candidates while bringing new perspectives on patient evaluation criteria and choice of surgical intervention (curative—Group 1, palliative—Group 2). Surgery duration, including anesthesiology (175.19 [95% CI (157.60–192.77)] min), shows a direct correlation with the number of lymph nodes dissected (Surgical duration [min] = 10.67 × No. of lymph nodes removed − 32.25). Interestingly, the aggressiveness of the tumor based on histological grade (highly differentiated being generally less aggressive than poorly differentiated) shows differential correlation with surgery duration among curative and palliative surgery candidates. Similarly, TNM staging indicates the need for a longer surgical duration (pTNM stage IIA, IIB, and IIIA) for curative interventions in patients with less advanced stages, as opposed to shorter surgery duration for palliative interventions (pTNM stage IIIC and IV). Conclusions: The study quantitatively presents the resources needed for the optimal surgical treatment of different groups of GC patients, as the disease coding systems in use regard the treatment of each pathology as “standard” in terms of patient management. The results obtained are anchored in the global perspectives of surgical outcomes and aim to improve the management of operating room scheduling, staff, and resources. Full article

This study investigates the potential of Far From Home, a non-digital board game, as an innovative tool for fostering empathy among university staff towards international students. International students face multifaceted challenges—linguistic barriers, cultural dissonance, and systemic inequities—yet traditional staff training often fails to cultivate the perspective-taking required for meaningful support. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analysed data from 82 participants across 10 game sessions, including surveys (n = 27), recorded gameplay observations, and semi-structured interviews (n = 6). Thematic analysis explored how role-playing as student avatars and collaborative problem-solving influenced staff empathy. The results demonstrated the game’s effectiveness in bridging cultural gaps, with participants reporting a heightened awareness of structural barriers and reduced stereotyping. Notably, the emergent findings suggested a “contrast commitment” effect, where witnessing biassed behaviours reinforced staff’s dedication to equitable practices. This study advocates for game-based training as a complement to existing programmes, with future research needed to assess longitudinal impacts. Potential applications include adapting the framework for other marginalised student groups and institutional contexts. Full article
