This study investigates the impact of injuries on National Basketball Association (NBA) player performance over 20 seasons, using large-scale performance data and a statistical evaluation. Injury events were matched with player–game performance metrics to assess how various injury types influence short-, medium-, and long-term performance outcomes, measured across 2-, 5-, and 10-game windows. Using paired sample t-tests and Cohen’s d, we quantified both the statistical significance and effect size of changes in key performance metrics before and after injury. The analysis applies paired t-tests and Cohen’s d to quantify the statistical and practical significance of performance deviations pre- and post-injury. Our results show that while most injury types are associated with measurable performance declines, especially in offensive and defensive ratings, certain categories, such as cardiovascular injuries, demonstrate counterintuitive improvements post-recovery. These patterns suggest that not all injuries have equivalent consequences and highlight the importance of individualized recovery protocols. This work contributes to the growing field of sports injury analytics by combining statistical modeling and sports analytics to deliver actionable insights for coaches, medical staff, and performance analysts in managing player rehabilitation and optimizing return-to-play decisions. Basketball is a sport whose regulations require quick and complex refereeing decisions. Since the inception of sports, research on sports judgment and refereeing has been consistently present in the scientific literature. However, decision-making and the psycho-emotional factors that influence it remain somewhat unexplored in studies. The decision-making of the basketball referee has been analyzed using the DMQ II questionnaire. To achieve this, 58 referees from the Spanish Basketball Federation collaborated, comprising 45 men and 13 women, all between the ages of 18 and 38 (M = 26.5, SD = 5.5). Participants completed the 31-question DMQ II questionnaire online, yielding results with significant differences based on age and gender about stress in decision-making. A modification of the referee’s teaching methodology that includes psychological strategies is proposed both in the initiation course and throughout the refereeing career. The findings highlight the need for mental health support systems for referees, particularly addressing stress management in young and female officials. This aligns with global efforts to safeguard psychological well-being in sports professionals. Full article

Background/Objectives: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) necessitates evidence-based rehabilitation strategies to optimize return-to-sport (RTS) outcomes, yet persistent re-injury rates and suboptimal performance persist despite standardized protocols. The purpose of this cross-sectional observational study is to examine the relationship between biomechanical, anthropometric, and temporal factors and return-to-sport outcomes. Methods: This cross-sectional study identifies biomechanical, anthropometric, and temporal determinants of RTS readiness in 81 recreational athletes post-ACLR. Outcome measures included anterior (A-SLH), lateral (L-SLH), and medial (M-SLH) single-leg hop for distance, single-leg sit-to-stand (SLSS), single-leg wall-sit hold (SLWS), and ACL-RSI. Statistical analyses employed Spearman’s correlations and multiple linear regression to determine the predictors of ACL-RSI. Results: There were significant correlations between RSI and Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) for L-SLH, M-SLH, SLSS, and SLWS (r = 0.27, r = 0.30, r = 0.44, r = 0.34, and p < 0.01, respectively). Among the functional outcome measures, multiple linear regression revealed that only SLWS significantly predicted ACL-RSI (β = 0.248, p = 0.037). Also, body weight (β = −0.233, p = 0.030) and postoperative duration (β = 0.292, p = 0.006) significantly predicted ACL-RSI. Conclusions: These findings challenge the primacy of limb symmetry indices alone, emphasizing the role of weight management, time-dependent neuromuscular adaptation, and multi-planar closed-chain strength in RTS decision-making. Clinically, rehabilitation frameworks should integrate personalized strategies targeting body composition and dynamic stability to mitigate asymmetric joint loading and enhance functional resilience. Background: Youth with intellectual disabilities are often marginalised and discriminated against regarding skills development and work opportunities as society seems to place high value on an individual’s intellect. Unemployment levels for youth with intellectual disabilities are significantly higher than youth in the general population, yet youth with intellectual disabilities can become valuable employees. This paper explores the untapped potential for youth with disabilities to access skill development opportunities through participation in sports organisations and events that enable them to become economically active. Methodology: A critical ethnographic approach was adopted as the research design. The sample included six youth with intellectual disabilities, five parents, two vocational trainers, two sports coaches, and two golf managers. Data was gathered through participant observations, semi structured interviews, and reflective journaling. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: The theme “Hidden treasures in a disabling environment” emerged, highlighting the untapped potential of youth with intellectual disabilities to engage in livelihood activities through participation in sports events. One subtheme was “Invisible and well-hidden resources” reflecting remote training centres leading to missed work opportunities. Research findings highlighted that youth with intellectual disabilities possessed marketable skills, alongside the discovery of substantial unexplored livelihood opportunities in the workforce of sports events. Background: Medical clearance for competitive sports is vital to safeguarding athletes’ health, particularly in high-intensity disciplines like football. In Italy, fitness assessments follow stringent protocols set by the Commissione di Vigilanza per il controllo dell’Idoneità Sportiva (COCIS), with a strong focus on cardiovascular screening. The primary goal is to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD), a rare but catastrophic event in athletes. Methods: This paper provides an in-depth narrative review of the 2023 COCIS guidelines, examining the cardiological screening process, required diagnostic tests, management of identified cardiovascular conditions, and the protocols’ role in reducing SCD risk. Results: Comparisons with international standards underscore the effectiveness of the Italian approach. Conclusions: The COCIS 2023 guidelines provide clear, evidence-based protocols for cardiovascular risk assessment, significantly enhancing athlete safety and reducing the incidence of SCD in high-intensity sports. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate Achilles tendon ruptures (ATR) in NHL players and the effects on return to play and player performance metrics. The incidence, mechanism of injury, management strategy, return to play (RTP), and post-injury were assessed from official online sports databases. Methods: A retrospective review of NHL players who sustained a partial or complete tear of the Achilles tendon from 2008 to 2024 was performed. Data were collected from NHL injury databases and media reports, and included player demographics, injury mechanism, treatment, and post-injury performance metrics. A Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare pre-injury and post-injury performance metrics, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Here, 15 NHL players with a mean age of 27.8 years were identified, with a prevalence rate of 0.125 injuries per 10,000 athletic exposures. Overall, 73.3% of ATRs were non-contact in nature, with 60.0% of ATRs occurring during off-season training. Fourteen players were managed with non-operative treatment, with no re-ruptures reported. The RTP rate was 93.3%, with players missing a mean number of 45.7 games. However, there was a deterioration in post-injury performance metrics, including games played per season, plus/minus rating, and time on ice per game post-injury. Conclusions: This study found that Achilles tendon ruptures are an uncommon injury in NHL players, with a prevalence rate of 0.125 injuries per 10,000 athletic exposures. A high RTP rate of 93.3% was observed in this cohort. However, there was a deterioration in post-injury performance metrics, including games played per season, plus/minus rating, and time on ice per game post-injury, highlighting the potential devastating sequelae of ATRs in elite NHL athletes. Urban forests, as a form of green infrastructure, play a vital role in enhancing urban resilience, environmental health, and quality of life. However, users perceive and utilize these spaces in diverse ways. This study aims to identify latent perception types among urban forest visitors and analyze their behavioral, demographic, and policy-related characteristics in Incheon Metropolitan City (Republic of Korea). Using latent class analysis, four distinct visitor types were identified: multipurpose recreationists, balanced relaxation seekers, casual forest users, and passive forest visitors. Multipurpose recreationists preferred active physical use and sports facilities, while balanced relaxation seekers emphasized emotional well-being and cultural experiences. Casual users engaged lightly with forest settings, and passive forest visitors exhibited minimal recreational interest. Satisfaction with forest elements such as vegetation, facilities, and management conditions varied across visitor types and age groups, especially among older adults. These findings highlight the need for perception-based green infrastructure planning. Policy recommendations include expanding accessible neighborhood green spaces for aging populations, promoting community-oriented events, and offering participatory forest programs for youth engagement. By integrating user segmentation into urban forest planning and governance, this study contributes to more inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable management of urban green infrastructure. Full article

Sport volunteering plays an important role in achieving the goals of sustainable development by supporting the social dimension of sustainability, fostering social integration, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. However, there is a lack of systematic research in Poland on the motivations of sport volunteers, particularly in the context of mass endurance events. This study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional design involving 148 sport volunteers engaged in mass endurance events in Poznan, Poland. To measure motivation, the Polish adaptation of the VMS-ISE scale was used. Data analysis was conducted using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that volunteer motivations were relatively homogeneous regardless of gender and education level, with the exception of passion for sport, which was significantly stronger among men (p = 0.037). Significant differences were found based on place of residence: residents of medium-sized cities demonstrated the highest motivation for personal development (p < 0.001), whereas individuals from rural areas exhibited stronger patriotism, a greater need for interpersonal interaction, and a higher valuation of external rewards (p < 0.05). The motivations of sport volunteers in Poland are complex and sensitive to environmental factors. Understanding these differences allows for better alignment of recruitment and volunteer management strategies, which can enhance both the effectiveness and sustainability of volunteer engagement. It is recommended to develop volunteer programs that take into account the demographic and socio-cultural characteristics of participants. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Traumatic dental injuries, particularly complicated crown fractures of permanent incisors, are common in adolescents, with maxillary central incisors most frequently affected due to their prominent position. These injuries, often resulting from sports or accidents, require prompt management to prevent complications such as pulp necrosis or infection, which can compromise long-term prognosis. Fragment reattachment offers a conservative, esthetically favorable approach when the fractured segment is intact, with outcomes comparable to composite restorations. This case report underscores the importance of timely intervention and advanced restorative techniques in pediatric dentistry. Case Presentation: A 16-year-old male presented with a complicated crown fracture of the upper left central incisor sustained during a soccer game. The fracture extended subgingivally with pulp exposure. The patient preserved the fragment in saline. Treatment involved fragment reattachment using a dentin bonding agent and flowable composite resin, followed by single-visit root canal therapy due to delayed presentation (48 h). A glass fiber post was placed to reinforce the restoration due to significant coronal loss. Three years of follow-up visits (1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months) revealed no clinical or radiographic complications, with the tooth remaining asymptomatic and functional. Conclusions: This case underscores the effectiveness of fragment reattachment when combined with meticulous technique and long-term monitoring. Full article

Background: Midfacial fractures are common outcomes of facial trauma. While younger individuals typically sustain these injuries through high-energy events like assaults and traffic or sports accidents, elderly patients increasingly present with fractures from low-energy mechanisms, primarily falls. Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze age- and gender-specific patterns in midfacial fractures over a 10-year period, with emphasis on elderly individuals and low-energy trauma. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of proven midfacial fractures between 2013 and 2022 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (University of Pécs, Hungary). The patients were stratified by age (<65 vs. ≥65 years) and gender. The variables included the injury mechanism, fracture localization, the dental status, hospitalization, and the presence of associated injuries. Bivariate analyses were performed, and the significance level was set to p < 0.05. Results: A total of 957 radiologically confirmed midfacial fracture cases were evaluated, of whom 344 (35.9%) were ≥65 years old. In the elderly group, females had a 19-fold higher risk for midfacial trauma than younger females (OR: 19.1, 95%CI: 9.30–39.21). In the older group, a fall was significantly the most frequent injury mechanism (OR: 14.5; 95%CI: 9.9–21.3), responsible for 89.5% of the cases, while hospitalization (OR: 0.36; 95%CI: 0.23–0.56) was less characteristic. Most of the fractures occurred in the zygomatic bone, in the zygomaticomaxillary complex, or in the anterior wall of the maxilla. Associated injuries in the elderly group included mostly lower limb injuries—particularly pertrochanteric femoral fractures in females—and upper limb injuries, with a slight male dominance. Conclusions: Low-energy falls are the primary cause of midfacial fractures in elderly patients, particularly in women. Tailored prevention and management strategies are essential for improving the outcomes in this growing demographic group. Full article

Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a joint condition characterized by damage to the surface of the joint and the underlying subchondral bone, leading to early-onset osteoarthritis. It predominantly affects the knee, elbow, and ankle, with higher prevalence in juveniles actively participating in sports, which complicates the condition due to slow healing processes and prolonged restrictions on physical activities. This review aims to summarize current knowledge on OCD in athletes, with emphasis on sport-specific risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment, to support clinical decision-making and future research. We conducted searches in the PubMed and Embase databases, covering the period from 2014 to 2024. The keywords used in the search covered most common sports in combination with term osteochondritis dissecans. This review examines the impacts of various sports on the development of OCD, analyzing prevalence and risk factors, with a focus on sports-specific risks across athletic disciplines like football, basketball, baseball, and gymnastics. The significance of early detection, intervention, and sport-specific conditioning is underscored to prevent the condition and manage it effectively. Moreover, the review highlights the positive prognosis for athletes, particularly adolescents, recovering from OCD, with a high rate of return to sport. Understanding the sports-specific risks, ensuring early intervention, and adopting a cautious, stepwise return to sport are critical for managing OCD effectively, thereby safeguarding the health and careers of athletes. Background/Objectives: Traumatic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability. When traumatic brain injury is repeated over time, it can lead to the development of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a chronic neurodegenerative disease commonly observed in individuals who engage in contact sports or military personnel involved in activities with a high risk of repeated head trauma. At autopsy, the examination of the brain reveals regional atrophy, corresponding to high concentrations of glutamate receptors. Microscopically, the primary findings are the deposition of neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads. The aim of this study is to highlight the clinical and histopathological characteristics of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, providing diagnostic support to forensic pathologists. Additionally, it seeks to aid in the differential diagnosis of similar conditions. Methods: A review of literature was conducted following the PRISMA criteria. Of 274 articles, 7 were selected. Results: According to these papers, most patients were male and exhibited neurological symptoms and neuropsychiatric impairments, and a proportion of them committed suicide or had aggressive behavior. Conclusions: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy remains largely underdiagnosed during life. The definitive diagnosis of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is established post-mortem through the identification of pathognomonic tauopathy lesions. Early and accurate antemortem recognition, particularly in at-risk individuals, is highly valuable for its differentiation from other neurodegenerative conditions, thereby enabling appropriate clinical management and potential interventions. The intersection of sports and natural forests and green spaces represents an emerging interdisciplinary field with implications for public health, environmental science, and sustainable land management and refers to the variety of cultural ecosystem services demanded by people from ecosystems. This manuscript presents a systematic bibliometric and thematic analysis of 148 publications for the period 1993–2024 identified through Web of Science and Scopus, aiming to evaluate the current state of research on sports activities conducted in natural forest environments. Findings indicated a marked increase in scientific interest of this topic over the past two decades, with key contributions from countries such as England, Germany, China, and the United States. Researchers most frequently examined sports such as hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and orienteering for their capacity to provide physiological and psychological benefits, reduce stress, and enhance mental well-being. The literature analysis highlights ecological concerns, particularly those associated with habitat disturbance, biodiversity loss, and conflicts between recreation and conservation. Six principal research themes were identified: sports in urban forests, sports tourism, hunting and fishing, recreational sports, health benefits, and environmental impacts. Keyword and co-authorship analyses revealed a multidisciplinary knowledge base with evolving thematic focuses. In conclusion, the need for integrated approaches that incorporate ecological impact assessment, stakeholder perspectives, and adaptive forest governance to ensure sustainable recreational use of natural forest ecosystems is underlined. Sport-related injuries are common presentations to primary care and hospital settings. Australian osteopaths practice mainly in private clinical settings in which the frequency of sport-related injury presentations, and how these injuries are managed, is unknown. The objective of the study was to describe the demographic, practice, and clinical management characteristics of Australian osteopaths who report often treating sport-related injuries. The study is a secondary analysis of data derived from the Australian osteopathy practice-based research network. Respondents indicated the frequency treating sports-related injuries in addition to other demographic, practice, and patient management characteristics. Backward logistic regression identified significant characteristics associated with often treating sport injuries. Over half (51%) of a nationally representative sample of Australian osteopaths reported treating sport-related injuries often. Those osteopaths who treat sports injuries often were likely to be male (p < 0.01) and utilise exercise prescription (OR2.34) and sports taping (OR5.99). Australian osteopaths who often treat sports-related injuries provide advice to patients and use exercise prescription more frequently than osteopaths who do not treat these injuries often. The data in the current work begin to explore how osteopaths manage sports-related injuries and highlights how they may be able to provide sports injury care for both recreational and elite sport populations. Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a Traumatic Sport? Survey on Italian Athletes’ Rehabilitation and Return to Sport

Background: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a physically demanding sport associated with a notable risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Understanding injury patterns, rehabilitation approaches, and psychological readiness to return to sport (RTS) is essential for prevention and management strategies. This study aimed to investigate injury characteristics among Italian BJJ athletes, assess their rehabilitation processes and psychological recovery, and identify key risk factors such as belt level, body mass index (BMI), and training load. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among members of the Italian BJJ community, including amateur and competitive athletes. A total of 360 participants completed a 36-item online questionnaire. Data collected included injury history, rehabilitation strategies, RTS timelines, and responses to the Injury-Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport (I-PRRS) scale. A Random Forest machine learning algorithm was used to identify and rank potential injury risk factors. Results: Of the 360 respondents, 331 (92%) reported at least one injury, predominantly occurring during training sessions. The knee was the most frequently injured joint, and the action “attempting to pass guard” was the most reported mechanism. Most athletes (65%) returned to training within one month. BMI and age emerged as the most significant predictors of injury risk. Psychological readiness scores indicated moderate confidence, with the lowest levels associated with playing without pain. Conclusions: Injuries in BJJ are common, particularly affecting the knee. Psychological readiness, especially confidence in training without pain, plays a critical role in RTS outcomes. Machine learning models may aid in identifying individual risk factors and guiding injury prevention strategies. Full article
