Steel is an important product in many engineering sectors; however, steelmaking remains one of the largest CO2 emitters. Therefore, new governmental policies drive the steelmaking industry toward a cleaner and more sustainable operation such as the gas-based direct reduction–electric arc furnace process. To become carbon neutral, utilizing more scrap is one of the feasible solutions to achieve this goal. Addressing knowledge gaps regarding scrap heterogeneity (size, shape, and composition) is essential to evaluate the effects of increased scrap ratios in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations. This review systematically examines heat and mass transfer correlations relevant to scrap melting in BOF steelmaking, with a focus on low Prandtl number fluids (thick thermal boundary layer) and dense particulate systems. Notably, a majority of these correlations are designed for fluids with high Prandtl numbers. Even for the ones tailored for low Prandtl, they lack the introduction of the porosity effect which alters the melting behavior in such high temperature systems. The review is divided into two parts. First, it surveys heat transfer correlations for single elements (rods, spheres, and prisms) under natural and forced convection, emphasizing their role in predicting melting rates and estimating maximum shell size. Second, it introduces three numerical modeling approaches, highlighting that the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) offers flexibility in modeling diverse scrap geometries and contact interactions while being computationally less demanding than particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (PR-DNS). Nevertheless, the review identifies a critical gap: no current CFD–DEM framework simultaneously captures shell formation (particle growth) and non-isotropic scrap melting (particle shrinkage), underscoring the need for improved multiphase models to enhance BOF operation. Modern aircraft increasingly utilizes highly integrated electronic equipment, driving continuously increasing heat dissipation demands. Vapor compression refrigeration systems demonstrate stronger alignment with future aircraft thermal management trends, leveraging their superior volumetric cooling capacity, high energy efficiency, and independence from engine bleed air. This paper reviews global research progress on aircraft vapor compression refrigeration systems, covering performance optimization, dynamic characteristics, control strategies, fault detection, and international development histories and typical applications. Analysis identifies emerging challenges under large-temperature-range cooling requirements, with comparative assessment establishing zeotropic mixture auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems as the optimal forward-looking solution. Finally, recognizing current research gaps, we propose future research directions for onboard auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems: optimizing refrigerant mixtures for flight conditions, achieving efficient gas-liquid separation during variable overloads and attitude conditions, and developing model predictive control with intelligent optimization to ensure reliability. This study designed and validated a dual-component beat-frequency quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (BF-QEPAS) gas detection system utilizing time-division multiplexing (TDM). By applying TDM to drive distributed feedback lasers, the system achieved the simultaneous detection of acetylene and methane. Its key innovation lies in exploiting the transient response of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) to acquire gas concentrations while concurrently capturing the QTF resonant frequency and quality factor in real-time. Owing to the short beat period and rapid system response, this approach significantly reduces time-delay constraints in time-division measurements, eliminating the need for periodic calibration inherent in conventional methods and preventing detection interruptions. The experimental results demonstrate minimum detection limits of 5.69 ppm for methane and 0.60 ppm for acetylene. Both gases exhibited excellent linear responses over the concentration range of 200 ppm to 4000 ppm, with the R2 value for methane being 0.996 and for acetylene being 0.997. The system presents a viable solution for the real-time, calibration-free monitoring of dissolved gases in transformer oil. Full article

Catalysts are ubiquitous in manufacturing industries and gas phase pollutant abatement but are not widely used in wastewater treatment, as high temperatures and concentrated waste streams are needed to achieve the reaction degradation rates required. Heating water is energy intensive, and alternative, low temperature solutions have been investigated, collectively known as advanced oxidation processes. However, many of these advanced oxidation processes use expensive oxidants such as perchlorate, hydroxy radicals or ozone to react with contaminants, and therefore have high running costs. This study has investigated microwave catalysis as a low-energy, low-cost technology for water treatment using NiO catalysts that can be heated in the microwave field to drive the decomposition of azo-dye contaminants. Using this methodology for the microwave-assisted degradation of two azo dyes (azorubine and methyl orange), conversions of >95% were achieved in only 10 s with 100 W microwave power. Full article

The mechanism for the upscale deposition of energy into the atmosphere from molecules and photons up to organized wind systems is examined. This analysis rests on the statistical multifractal analysis of airborne observations. The results show that the persistence of molecular velocity after collision in breaking the continuous translational symmetry of an equilibrated gas is causative. The symmetry breaking may be caused by excited photofragments with the associated persistence of molecular velocity after collision, interaction with condensed phase surfaces (solid or liquid), or, in a scaling environment, an adjacent scale having a different velocity and temperature. The relationship of these factors for the solution to the Navier–Stokes equation in an atmospheric context is considered. The scale invariant version of Gibbs free energy, carried by the most energetic molecules, enables the acceleration of organized flow (winds) from the smallest planetary scales by virtue of the nonlinearity of the mechanism, subject to dissipation by the more numerous average molecules maintaining an operational temperature via infrared radiation to the cold sink of space. The fastest moving molecules also affect the transfer of infrared radiation because their higher kinetic energy and the associated more-energetic collisions contribute more to the far wings of the spectral lines, where the collisional displacement from the central energy level gap is greatest and the lines are less self-absorbed. The relationship of events at these scales to macroscopic variables such as the thermal wind equation and its components will be considered in the Discussion section. An attempt is made to synthesize the mechanisms by which winds are generated and sustained, on all scales, by appealing to published works since 2003. This synthesis produces a view of the general circulation that includes thermodynamics and the defining role of turbulence in driving it. Full article

Due to the limitations of current battery technologies—such as lower energy density and high cost compared to fossil fuels—electric vehicles (EVs) face constraints in applications requiring extended range or heavy payloads, such as refuse trucks. As a midterm solution, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) combine internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric powertrains to enable flexible energy usage, particularly in urban duty cycles characterized by frequent stopping and idling. This study introduces a model-based energy management strategy using the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), tailored for a retrofitted series hybrid refuse truck. A conventional ISUZU NPR 10 truck was instrumented to collect real-world driving and operational data, which guided the development of a vehicle-specific ECMS controller. The proposed strategy was evaluated over five driving cycles—including both standardized and measured urban scenarios—under varying load conditions: Tare Mass (TM) and Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). Compared with a rule-based control approach, ECMS demonstrated up to 14% improvement in driving range and significant reductions in exhaust gas emissions (CO, NOx, and CO2). The inclusion of auxiliary load modeling further enhances the realism of the simulation results. These findings validate ECMS as a viable strategy for optimizing fuel economy and reducing emissions in hybrid refuse truck applications. Full article

To enhance the accuracy of SOC prediction in EVs, which often suffers from significant discrepancies between displayed and actual driving ranges, this study proposes a data-driven model guided by an energy consumption framework. The approach addresses the problem of inaccurate remaining range prediction, improving drivers’ travel planning and vehicle efficiency. A PCA-GA-K-Means-based driving cycle clustering method is introduced, followed by driving style feature extraction using a GMM to capture behavioral differences. A coupled library of twelve typical driving cycle style combinations is constructed to handle complex correlations among driving style, operating conditions, and range. To mitigate multicollinearity and nonlinear feature redundancies, a Pearson-DII-based feature extraction method is proposed. A stacking ensemble model, integrating Random Forest, CatBoost, XGBoost, and SVR as base models with ElasticNet as the meta model, is developed for robust prediction. Validated with real-world vehicle data across −21 °C to 39 °C and four driving cycles, the model significantly improves SOC prediction accuracy, offering a reliable solution for EV range estimation and enhancing user trust in EV technology. This review explores the development of energy storage technologies and governance frameworks in the Asia-Pacific region, where rapid economic growth and urbanisation drive the demand for sustainable energy solutions. Energy storage systems (ESS) are integral to balancing renewable energy fluctuations, improving grid resilience, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This paper examines the role of international organisations, including the United Nations, International Energy Agency (IEA), and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in promoting energy storage advancements through strategic initiatives, policy frameworks, and funding mechanisms. Regionally, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have launched programs fostering collaboration, technical support, and knowledge sharing. Detailed case studies of Japan, Thailand, and China highlight the diverse policy approaches, technological innovations, and international collaborations shaping energy storage advancements. While Japan emphasises cutting-edge innovation, Thailand focuses on regional integration, and China leads in large-scale deployment and manufacturing. This analysis identifies key lessons from these frameworks and case studies, providing insights into governance strategies, policy implications, and the challenges of scaling energy storage technologies. It offers a roadmap for advancing regional and global efforts toward achieving low-carbon, resilient energy systems aligned with sustainability and climate goals. Full article

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) represent a pivotal technology in renewable energy due to their clean and efficient power generation capabilities. Their role in potential carbon mitigation enhances their viability. SOFCs can operate via a variety of alternative fuels, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, solid carbon, and ammonia. However, several solutions have been proposed to overcome various technical issues and to allow for stable operation in dry methane, without coking in the anode layer. To avoid coke formation thermodynamically, methane is typically reformed, contributing to an increased degradation rate through the addition of oxygen-containing gases into the fuel gas to increase the O/C ratio. The performance achieved by reforming catalytic materials, comprising active sites, supports, and electrochemical testing, significantly influences catalyst performance, showing relatively high open-circuit voltages and coking-resistance of the CH4 reforming catalysts. In the next step, the operating principles and thermodynamics of methane reforming are explored, including their traditional catalyst materials and their accompanying challenges. This work explores the components and functions of SOFCs, particularly focusing on anode materials such as perovskites, Ruddlesden–Popper oxides, and spinels, along with their structure–property relationships, including their ionic and electronic conductivity, thermal expansion coefficients, and acidity/basicity. Mechanistic and kinetic studies of common reforming processes, including steam reforming, partial oxidation, CO2 reforming, and the mixed steam and dry reforming of methane, are analyzed. Furthermore, this review examines catalyst deactivation mechanisms, specifically carbon and metal sulfide formation, and the performance of methane reforming and partial oxidation catalysts in SOFCs. Single-cell performance, including that of various perovskite and related oxides, activity/stability enhancement by infiltration, and the simulation and modeling of electrochemical performance, is discussed. This review also addresses research challenges in regards to methane reforming and partial oxidation within SOFCs, such as gas composition changes and large thermal gradients in stack systems. Finally, this review investigates the modeling of catalytic and non-catalytic processes using different dimension and segment simulations of steam methane reforming, presenting new engineering designs, material developments, and the latest knowledge to guide the development of and the driving force behind an oxygen concentration gradient through the external circuit to the cathode. The transition toward sustainable and decentralized energy solutions necessitates the development of innovative bioelectronic systems capable of harvesting and converting renewable energy. Here, we present a novel photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell architecture based on a biohybrid anode integrating laser-induced graphene (LIG), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), and isolated thylakoid membranes. LIG provided a porous, conductive scaffold, while PEDOT enhanced electrode compatibility, electrical conductivity, and operational stability. Compared to MXene-based systems that involve complex, multi-step synthesis, PEDOT offers a cost-effective and scalable alternative for bioelectrode fabrication. Thylakoid membranes were immobilized onto the PEDOT-modified LIG surface to enable light-driven electron generation. Electrochemical characterization revealed enhanced redox activity following PEDOT modification and stable photocurrent generation under light illumination, achieving a photocurrent density of approximately 18 µA cm−2. The assembled photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell employing a gas diffusion platinum cathode demonstrated an open-circuit voltage of 0.57 V and a peak power density of 36 µW cm−2 in 0.1 M citrate buffer (pH 5.5) under light conditions. Furthermore, the integration of a charge pump circuit successfully boosted the harvested voltage to drive a low-power light-emitting diode, showcasing the practical viability of the system. This work highlights the potential of combining biological photosystems with conductive nanomaterials for the development of self-powered, light-driven bioelectronic devices. Full article

Currently, the layout planning of power exchange facilities in urban areas is not perfect, which cannot effectively meet the power exchange demand of urban operating vehicles and restricts the operation of urban operating vehicles. The article proposes a vehicle power exchange demand-oriented power exchange station siting planning scheme to meet the rapid replenishment demand of operating vehicles in urban areas. The spatial and temporal distribution of power exchange demand is predicted by considering the operation law, driving law, and charging decision of drivers; the candidate sites of power exchange stations are determined based on the data of power exchange demand; the optimization model of the site selection of power exchange stations with the lowest loss time of vehicle power exchange and the lowest cost of the planning and construction of power exchange stations is established and solved by using the joint algorithm of MLP-NSGA-II; and the optimization model is compared with the traditional genetic algorithm (GA) and the Density Peak. The results show that the MLP-NSGA-II joint algorithm has the lowest cost of optimizing the location of switching stations. The results show that the MLP-NSGA-II algorithm improves the convergence efficiency by about 30.23%, and the service coverage of the optimal solution reaches 94.30%; the service utilization rate is 85.35%, which is 6.25% and 19.69% higher than that of the GA and DPC, respectively. The research content of the article can provide a design basis for the future configuration of the number and location of power exchange stations in urban areas. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) classification and energy management strategies (EMS), with a particular emphasis on the application and potential of genetic algorithms (GAs) in optimizing energy management strategies for hybrid electric vehicles. Initially, the paper categorizes hybrid electric vehicles based on mixing rates and power source configurations, elucidating the operational principles and the range of applicability for different hybrid electric vehicle types. Following this, the two primary categories of energy management strategies—rule-based and optimization-based—are introduced, emphasizing their significance in enhancing energy efficiency and performance, while also acknowledging their inherent limitations. Furthermore, the advantages of utilizing genetic algorithms in optimizing energy management systems for hybrid vehicles are underscored. As a global optimization technique, genetic algorithms are capable of effectively addressing complex multi-objective problems by circumventing local optima and identifying the global optimal solution. The adaptability and versatility of genetic algorithms allow them to conduct real-time optimization across diverse driving conditions. Genetic algorithms play a pivotal role in hybrid vehicle energy management and exhibit a promising future. When combined with other optimization techniques, genetic algorithms can augment the optimization potential for tackling complex tasks. Nonetheless, the advancement of this technique is confronted with challenges such as cost, battery longevity, and charging infrastructure, which significantly influence its widespread adoption and application. To address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the maritime sector, the European Union (EU) has introduced the FuelEU Maritime regulation to incentivize ships to adopt diversified compliance pathways and energy solutions. This study aims to determine the optimal alternative fuel configurations for dual-fuel ships of different types under environmental, economic, and regulatory constraints. An integrated environmental and cost assessment model from a well-to-wake (WtW) perspective to systematically evaluate the environmental benefits and economic feasibility of fossil-based, bio-based, and renewable electricity-based alternative fuels applied in dual-fuel ships. By incorporating the PROMETHEE II method within a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework, together with the CRITIC objective weighting method, the study enables a robust ranking of alternative fuel configurations across three key dimensions: environmental performance, cost feasibility, and regulatory compliance. The results indicate that, regardless of ship type, the very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) + marine gas oil (MGO) and VLSFO + methanol (MEOH) combinations fail to meet the GHG intensity targets for 2025–2050. Only the VLSFO + electrolytic liquid hydrogen (E-LH2) and VLSFO + electrolytic ammonia (E-NH3) configurations are compliant. Although e-fuels incur the highest annual costs, the EU compliance penalty associated with fossil fuels increases exponentially. In contrast, e-fuels retain long-term cost advantages, ultimately driving a sector-wide transition toward e-fuel-dominated energy structures by 2050. Their superior environmental performance and regulatory compatibility emerge as the core drivers of the maritime energy transition. Full article

Clean heat standards (CHS) represent a promising policy mechanism to drive the decarbonization of space and hot water heating, a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. This paper provides an introduction to CHS, which set targets for heat decarbonization for heating market actors. We explore their design features, implementation approaches, and potential synergies with other policy instruments. The analysis focuses on their role in complementing fossil fuel phaseout policies, accelerating market transformation, and addressing key barriers. Drawing on examples from existing and proposed policies worldwide, the paper examines the potential impacts of clean heat standards placed on heating appliance manufacturers, energy companies, and end users. It also considers the importance of integrating these standards into broader energy and environmental policy frameworks to achieve equitable and efficient outcomes. The findings suggest that while clean heat standards have substantial potential to reduce emissions and advance energy transition goals, their effectiveness will depend on careful design, robust enforcement, and alignment with complementary policies. This paper aims to provide policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders with a foundational understanding of clean heat standards and their role in fostering sustainable heating solutions. Electrothermal actuators, with their simple structure, small size, strong anti-interference ability, and easy integration, have emerged as a promising solution for micro-drive technology. However, deploying them in extreme environments, such as the fuze systems—which demand exceptional reliability under high mechanical overloads. In this study, a device based on multi-electrothermal co-actuation is designed for the fuze system of loitering munition. The overall structure and work principle of the multi-electrothermal co-actuation device is discussed. Considering application environments, the effect factors of V-beam numbers, air gap, type of contact surface, external load force, periodic voltage and gas damping on the output performance of the multi-electrothermal co-actuation device are systematically addressed via simulation and experimental method. Furthermore, the high overload resistance performance of the co-actuation device applied in loitering munition is studied. The results show that the proposed multi-electrothermal co-actuation device could operate stably under a high overload (12,000 g/73.79 μs) environment, fully meeting the demanding requirements of fuze system for loitering munition. In addition, this study identifies laser processing-induced thermal gradients and mechanical stresses as critical fabrication challenges. This study provides significant insights into the design and optimization of multi-electrothermal actuation systems for next-generation fuze applications, establishing a valuable framework for future development in this field.
