Cutaneous neoplasia is among the most common illnesses in dogs and can pose significant risks. Accurate morphological diagnosis of these conditions is vital for effective treatment and management. In this retrospective study, a total of 3746 canine skin biopsies were submitted to a veterinary reference diagnostic laboratory and evaluated using histopathology. The variables assessed included age, sex, breed, lesion, location, and histopathological diagnosis. Non-neoplastic lesions accounted for 61% of all analyzed samples, while neoplastic tumors accounted for 39%. When looking at age, dogs ranging 3–6 years and 7–9 years had at least six times higher risk of developing malignant neoplasia compared to those aged 0–2 years. Among the malignant neoplasms, mast cell tumors, hemangiosarcoma, and squamous cell carcinoma were the most observed, representing 30%, 18%, and 12% of cases, respectively. The breeds most frequently affected by malignant neoplasms included Pit Bull Terriers, Boxers, and mixed breeds, all of which comprised the majority of mast cell tumor cases at 50.54%. These findings are novel in this field and may assist small animal veterinarians in making preliminary diagnoses, while also helping pet owners understand the importance of skin cancer and its early detection. In small animal nutrition, the caloric content of a diet is expressed as metabolizable energy (ME). The gold standard method for determining this variable is through feeding trials with the target species. However, the high cost and intricacy of this assay lead to the use of indirect estimation methods. The aim of this study was to analyze the main equations employed for estimating ME and compare them with the results of in vivo tests. In total, 451 pet food products in Brazil were evaluated. The ME values were determined via the bromatological values available on labels. The data were analyzed using SAS, and Student’s t test was used with a significance of 5%. For all predictive equations, there was a non-conformity between their results and those obtained by in vivo methods. Thus, the prediction equations are only accurate when the exact values of food composition are used, which is hardly applicable since veterinarians and animal owners only have access to the information provided on the labels. Nonetheless, the Atwater system equation proved to be the most reliable for estimating ME, showing the smallest disparity among the evaluated methods. The overall differences between in vivo results and ME estimation with the Atwater system amounted to 3.59% for dry cat foods and −1.94% for dry dog foods. Moreover, although it was also the most accurate for wet foods, the differences were substantially greater (11.99% for cat foods and 8.25% for dog foods). These findings highlight the need for further research to refine ME estimation, which could contribute to improved pet food formulation and help reduce cases of malnutrition in dogs and cats. The abdomen is a key region in small animal veterinary practice, with the middle and caudal sections housing various organ systems that are susceptible to dysfunction, necessitating medical intervention or surgery. Sectional imaging techniques like CT and MRI are commonly used in small mammals, but no studies have focused on rodent abdomen. This study aimed to correlate micro-CT and MRI images of the middle and caudal abdominal regions with corresponding anatomical sections in Syrian hamsters (SHs), which are popular pets and experimental models. Ten healthy male SHs were used, and anatomical structures from frozen sections were compared with corresponding MCT and MRI images. Clinically relevant structures identified in anatomical sections were discernible on MCT and MRI scans. The key findings include the presence of glandular and non-glandular stomachs, the stomach and cecum primarily located on the left side, the absence of ampulla coli, sacculus rotundus, and cecal appendix, and sacculation of the colon, as well as the jejunum, mainly on the right side. The vesicular, coagulating, and prostate glands were also present, and the right kidney did not extend to the last thoracic vertebra. The results were similar to abdominal anatomical and radiologic studies in rats, mice, and guinea pigs, regardless of the rat’s and mice’s sacculated cecum and the guinea pig’s glandular stomach. However, significant differences were observed compared to the rabbit abdomen’s sectional anatomy and CT findings. This study highlights the diagnostic value of MCT and MRI in SHs and provides a valuable reference for interpreting cross-sectional abdominal images in SHs. Full article

Hedgehogs are small omnivorous mammals prevalent across Europe, Asia, and Africa. The expanding intrusion of humans into hedgehog habitats and rising popularity of keeping exotic animals like hedgehogs as pets have disrupted the delicate balance of the human–animal–environment interface. Despite their ecological importance, hedgehog-borne flea species have received limited research attention, with most studies focusing on their vectorial role, and except one report, nothing on the species composition and genetic diversity of hedgehog flea specimens. An inventory and phylogenetic investigation, conducted for the first time in Algeria as well as in North Africa, allowed for collecting 45 hedgehogs (15 males and 30 females) and 303 fleas, and analyzing them through morphological and molecular approaches. The hedgehog specimens were subjected to macro- and microscopic examinations based on diagnostic morphological criteria and morphometric measurements, resulting in their identification as Atelerix algirus. This study represents the first report of this species’ prevalence in Djelfa. The ecological and geographical diversity of the studied areas, from arid deserts to humid regions, highlights the adaptability and resilience of A. algirus to diverse habitats. Additionally, 271 and 32 flea specimens were morphologically identified as Archaeopsylla erinacei and Ctenocephalides felis, respectively. Molecular examination targeting ITS1-rDNA further confirmed the morphological identification of fleas species. Phylogenetic analysis of fleas’ ITS1-rDNA sequences revealed heterogeneity, with the specimens clustering into two distinct clades. The first clade comprised two populations of A. erinacei, while the second clade included C. felis specimens of this study, grouped with homologous sequences from various regions worldwide. No correlation between flea species and geographical locations was observed demonstrating the sympatric distribution of flea specimens in the studied regions. In addition, no hybrid or genetic combination notion was observed among the flea specimens processed in this study compared with those coming from other countries. These findings contribute to our understanding of the species composition and distribution of hedgehogs and their flea ectoparasites in Algeria and provide a baseline for future epidemiological and entomological research in the country. With the increasing popularity of dogs as pets, cases of hydrocephalus have risen significantly. Due to the ongoing challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus, advancements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology have greatly enhanced the diagnostic capabilities in small animal clinical practice. Assessing ventricular size is crucial for the clinical management of hydrocephalus and other neurological disorders. However, methods for quantifying ventricular size and evaluating the severity of hydrocephalus requires further optimization. This study involved 137 hydrocephalus and 17 normal dogs. In hydrocephalus cases, the maximum percentage of the ventricle height to brain height (H-max%) was correlated with the area (A-max%) and volume (V-max%). Equations were calculated based on these findings, showing that the percentage of height can effectively represent the percentage of area and volume, which can indicate the diagnosis and monitoring of hydrocephalus prognosis. Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTb), formerly also known as osteoclastoma, is a pathological entity that in veterinary medicine is still undefined and, probably, underdiagnosed. In humans, GCTb is recognized as a primary benign bone tumor, locally aggressive, with high local recurrence rates, with controversial histogenesis that can rarely progress or present as a malignant form. In pets, this tumor is still considered rare, though the possibility of underdiagnosis is significant. Hence, the aim of the present study is to provide a histological and immunohistochemical characterization of a small case series of presumptive feline GCTb, comparing our results to the data reported for the human counterpart. Searching our archive, we found, from 2010 to 2023, only three diagnosed cases of GCTb from domestic cats (felis catus). After diagnosis revision, the samples were submitted to immunohistochemistry for Iba1, TRAP, SATB2, RUNX2, RANK, karyopherin α2 (KPNA-2), and osteocalcin. Ki-67 index was also evaluated. Results showed that the multinucleated giant cells were positive for Iba1, TRAP, and RANK, accounting for their osteoclastic origin. On the other side, mononuclear cells were mostly positive for osteoblast markers such as RUNX2, SATB2, and KPNA-2, whereas tumor-associated macrophages showed positivity for Iba1. Hence, results on the cell types characterizing the feline GCTb were comparable to those described in the human form of the tumor. Currently, diagnostic criteria for GCTBs in cats and, in domestic animals more broadly, are still lacking. This study provides valuable data into the immunohistochemical characteristics of the cell populations in feline GCTBs, enhancing veterinarians’ and pathologists’ knowledge for its diagnosis, ultimately improving patient care. Larger case series, complete with follow-up information, molecular analyses for specific mutations, and imaging of both tumors and patients, are needed to improve identification and achieve greater sensitivity in diagnosing this unique tumor. The isolation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria from the urinary tracts of pets is increasingly common, particularly in animals with concurrent health conditions. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is one of the most significant antimicrobial-resistant bacteria affecting cats and dogs within the European Union (EU). This study aims to review the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of PA isolated from urine samples of small animals globally. This pathogen is known for its opportunistic infections and is a significant concern in veterinary medicine due to its inherent resistance to multiple antibiotics and its ability to acquire additional resistance mechanisms. This review seeks to enhance educational initiatives regarding the management of emerging MDR bacteria. Full article

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing among mammals around the world, and domestic dogs are no exception. There is no approved cure for canine IBD with limited treatment options. Novel probiotic bacteria discovery from free-ranging animals for the treatment of IBD in domestic pets can likely yield promising probiotic candidates. Consequently, the overall aim was to isolate bacteria from free-ranging animals that could potentially be utilized as novel probiotics. Two bacteria identified as unique Paenibacillus spp. strains by small ribosomal RNA (16S) gene sequencing were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a North American Gray Wolf (Canis lupus). The bacteria were typed as Gram-variable, and both were catalase/oxidase positive as well as sensitive to commonly used antibiotics. The bacteria digested complex carbohydrates and lipids by standard assays. The isolated bacteria also inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus. The whole genome sequence (WGS) length of bacterial isolate ClWae17B was 6,939,193 bp, while ClWae19 was 7,032,512 bp, both similar in size to other Paenibacillus spp. The genomes of both bacteria encoded enzymes involved with the metabolism of complex starches and lipids, such as lyases and pectinases, along with encoding antimicrobials such as lanthipeptides, lasso peptides, and cyclic-lactone-autoinducers. No pernicious virulence genes were identified in the WGS of either bacterial isolate. Phylogenetically, the most closely related bacteria based on 16S gene sequences and WGS were P. taichungensis for ClWae17B and P. amylolyticus for ClWae19. WGS analyses and phenotypic assays supported the hypothesis that the isolates described constitute two novel candidate probiotic bacteria for potential use in dogs. Full article

Free-roaming cats in urban and peri-urban areas and in rural towns pose significant challenges due to their nuisance behaviors, threats to wildlife, and potential disease transmission. Traditional management methods often involve trapping and euthanizing many of these cats, which is not only costly but also distressing for the shelter staff involved, and have failed to reduce numbers of impounded cats or cat-related complaints. Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a Community Cat Program that provided free sterilization, microchipping, and preventative veterinary care for all owned, semi-owned, and unowned cats in a small rural town with high cat impoundments in Ipswich, Queensland. The program was instigated by the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation in collaboration with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Queensland and the Animal Welfare League, Queensland, and it was funded by various organizations including Fondation Brigitte Bardot. Data from 2017 to 2023 were analyzed to assess the impact of the program on cat intake and outcomes in local shelters. A total of 308 cats were sterilized, representing 94 cats per 1000 residents over 3.4 years, and in the third year, this was associated with a 60% decrease in cat intake, an 85% reduction in numbers euthanized and 39% fewer cat-related calls to the local council. These findings suggest that high-intensity, targeted sterilization programs significantly decrease shelter intake and euthanasia, and thus alleviate the psychological burden on staff. These programs are a humane and effective alternative to traditional cat management, and benefit animal welfare as well as community wellbeing. This is aligned with a One Welfare approach, which enhances the well-being of animals, humans, and their environments. Legislative changes are required to support these programs to effectively decrease the numbers of free-roaming cats in cities and towns and the issues they cause, while protecting human wellbeing. Vector-borne infections persist as a significant issue in both human and animal health. Many of the most common vector-borne infections in the USA, especially tick-borne infections, are known to be zoonotic, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis, and these infections may also negatively impact the health of infected animals. Convenient patient-side assays for the detection of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma spp., and Ehrlichia spp., and antigen of Dirofilaria immitis have allowed for the generation of robust and large-scale prevalence data in dogs. Data of similar scale and distribution are not available in cats, and most feline prevalence studies have evaluated a small sample size with limited geographic distribution. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to B. burgdorferi, Anaplasma spp., and Ehrlichia spp., and D. immitis antigen among shelter cats across the USA, a population that is presumably at high risk for ectoparasitism and, consequently, exposure to vector-borne infections. In total, 2232 whole blood samples were collected from shelter cats across four regions of the USA—South, Northeast, Midwest, and West—and were evaluated using the Idexx SNAP® 4Dx® Test. Ectoparasites were also opportunistically collected from cats during blood collection and morphologically identified. The prevalence of at least one vector-borne infection was 2.60%, and the nationwide prevalence was 1.88% for B. burgdorferi, 0.54% for Anaplasma spp., 0.09% for Ehrlichia spp., and 0.55% for D. immitis. A total of 1120 ectoparasites were collected from 423 cats, including 27 ticks and 1093 fleas. Although the overall prevalence of the pathogens in this survey is relatively low, we observe that there is an increased exposure risk regionally for some agents, with geographic distributions in this study mostly coinciding with established human and canine distributions. Understanding these findings in an assumed non-protected population of cats allows us to extrapolate the risk to pet cats if they are not provided routine veterinary care, including a broad-spectrum parasite prevention program. This study investigates the captive environments of oriental small-clawed otter (OSO; Aonyx cinereus) cafés in Japan, aiming to identify discrepancies with established welfare guidelines. Improved management of these commercial facilities could raise awareness about the difficulties of keeping OSOs as pets and enhance their welfare. Utilizing the role of commercial facilities in public outreach, we consider that the rigorous implementation of proper care practices in these establishments could help mitigate the increasing demand for OSOs domestically and contribute to the conservation of the OSO. In this study, we focused on the critical aspects of the captive environment necessary to maintain the psychological well-being of OSOs and evaluated the captive environments of OSOs housed in animal cafés for OSO welfare using non-invasive methods. Based on zoo husbandry standards, it was found that there were deficiencies in aquatic environments and solitary housing conditions; however, the enrichment tools aligned with the guidelines. The results suggest that deviations from the recommended elements in the environment of OSOs in captivity are associated with a tendency of these OSOs to develop various diseases. It is deemed necessary to amend the regulations governing animal-handling businesses to include welfare criteria, and it is considered essential for each establishment to operate only after ensuring sufficient welfare for the OSOs. The spline reconstruction technique (SRT) is a fast algorithm based on a novel numerical implementation of an analytic representation of the inverse Radon transform. The purpose of this study was to compare the SRT, filtered back-projection (FBP), and the Tera-Tomo 3D algorithm for various iteration numbers, using small-animal dynamic PET data obtained from a Mediso nanoScan® PET/CT scanner. For this purpose, Patlak graphical kinetic analysis was employed to noninvasively quantify the myocardial metabolic rate of glucose (MRGlu) in seven male C57BL/6 mice (n=7). All analytic reconstructions were performed via software for tomographic image reconstruction. The analysis of all PET-reconstructed images was conducted with PMOD software (version 3.506, PMOD Technologies LLC, Fällanden, Switzerland) using the inferior vena cava as the image-derived input function. Statistical significance was determined by employing the one-way analysis of variance test. The results revealed that the differences between the values of MRGlu obtained via SRT versus FBP, and the variants of he Tera-Tomo 3D algorithm were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Overall, the SRT appears to perform similarly to the other algorithms investigated, providing a valid alternative analytic method for preclinical dynamic PET studies. Full article

The Impact of Altitude on Tick-Borne Pathogens at Two Mountain Ranges in Central Slovakia

Ticks are ectoparasites of a wide range of animals and are important vectors of numerous pathogens affecting humans, livestock, and pets. This study investigates possible correlations between selected factors, altitude, soil pH, and a factor called ‘amount’ (number of ticks examined in pooled samples) on the occurrence of I. ricinus ticks positive for selected tick-borne microorganisms. Questing I. ricinus ticks were collected in 2016 and 2017 across various altitudes, at two mountain ranges in central Slovakia. Tick pools were screened for the presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), Babesia/Theileria spp., Rickettsia spp., and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) using molecular methods. Regression analysis was employed to evaluate relationships between selected factors and the occurrence of vector-borne microorganisms. This study revealed a statistically significant influence of altitude on the occurrence of A. phagocytophilum; increasing altitude of the sampling site was associated with increased probability of pathogen occurrence. For Babesia/Theileria spp., neither altitude nor soil pH significantly affected pathogen occurrence. The occurrence of Bbsl was notably impacted by both altitude and soil pH; higher altitudes were associated with a decreased probability of pathogen presence, whereas higher soil pH increased the likelihood of pathogen occurrence. The presence of Rickettsia in a pooled sample was not affected by altitude and soil pH, but the ‘amount’ factor was a significant predictor, increasing the probability of pathogen detection. Neither altitude nor soil pH had a significant impact on TBEV occurrence. The regression models showed moderate goodness-of-fit levels to the data, underscoring their utility in examining the role of altitude and soil pH on pathogen occurrence. However, they explained only a small portion of the overall variance in pathogen occurrence, indicating the presence of other significant factors not covered in this study. Full article

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a non-invasive molecular imaging technique. The limited spatial resolution of PET images, due to technological and physical imaging constraints, directly affects the precise localization and interpretation of small lesions and biological processes. The super-resolution (SR) technique aims to enhance image quality by improving spatial resolution, thereby aiding clinicians in achieving more accurate diagnoses. However, most conventional SR methods rely on idealized degradation models and fail to effectively capture both low- and high-frequency information present in medical images. For the challenging SR reconstruction of PET images exhibiting motion-induced artefacts, a degradation model that better aligns with practical scanning scenarios was designed by us. Furthermore, we proposed a PET image SR method based on the deep residual-in-residual network (DRRN), focusing on the recovery of both low- and high-frequency information. By incorporating multi-level residual connections, our approach facilitates direct feature propagation across different network levels. This design effectively mitigates the lack of feature correlation between adjacent convolutional layers in deep networks. Our proposed method surpasses benchmark methods in both full-reference and no-reference metrics and subjective visual effects across small animal PET (SAPET), phantoms, and Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) datasets. The experimental findings confirm the remarkable efficacy of DRRN in enhancing spatial resolution and mitigating blurring in PET images. In comparison to conventional SR techniques, this method demonstrates superior proficiency in restoring low-frequency structural texture information while simultaneously maintaining high-frequency details, thus showcasing exceptional multi-frequency information fusion capabilities. Multiparametric Characterization of the DSL-6A/C1 Pancreatic Cancer Model in Rats

The DSL-6A/C1 murine pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) tumor model was established in Lewis rats and characterized through a comprehensive multiparametric analysis to compare it to other preclinical tumor models and explore potential diagnostic and therapeutical targets. DSL-6A/C1 tumors were histologically analyzed to elucidate PDAC features. The tumor microenvironment was studied for immune cell prevalence. Multiparametric MRI and PET imaging were utilized to characterize tumors, and 68Ga-FAPI-46-targeting cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), were used to validate the histological findings. The histology confirmed typical PDAC characteristics, such as malformed pancreatic ductal malignant cells and CAFs. Distinct immune landscapes were identified, revealing an increased presence of CD8+ T cells and a decreased CD4+ T cell fraction within the tumor microenvironment. PET imaging with 68Ga-FAPI tracers exhibited strong tracer uptake in tumor tissues. The MRI parameters indicated increasing intralesional necrosis over time and elevated contrast media uptake in vital tumor areas. We have demonstrated that the DSL-6A/C1 tumor model, particularly due to its high tumorigenicity, tumor size, and 68Ga-FAPI-46 sensitivity, is a suitable alternative to established small animal models for many forms of preclinical analyses and therapeutic studies of PDAC.
