Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), a flexible biodegradable polyester, has gained widespread use in packaging applications due to its ability to degrade under controlled conditions, producing non-toxic substances. While this property makes PBAT particularly attractive for the development of transient electronic devices, this potential application remains unexplored. To address this research gap, we developed PBAT-based composites and modified their electrical properties through CO2 laser functionalization. Although laser treatment of neat PBAT primarily resulted in material ablation, the incorporation of lignin and silica-based fillers enabled the formation of electrically conductive pathways. Among the various fillers tested, dealkaline lignin (DEALK) and glass fibers (GFs) provided the optimal combination of electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and processability. Characterization techniques (electrical measurements, optical microscopy, SEM, EDX, and TGA) highlighted that by optimizing laser treatment and the filler concentration, it is possible to produce conductive tracks with remarkably low sheet resistance. Hybrid composites containing 10–15 wt% of GF and 20–25 wt% of lignin demonstrated the best electrical performance with values as low as 3.5 Ω/sq, which were further reduced to 1.72 Ω/sq after laser process optimization. These findings establish PBAT composites as promising candidates for sustainable transient electronics. Full article

Distressed fabric is a popular fashion trend that adds a distinct visual appeal to garments. Distressing involves acid washing with pumice stones containing potassium permanganate. This approach is inappropriate for knitted textiles, which can generate holes and reduce quality. This project seeks to create an Elasto Ball (EB) as an alternative to pumice stones in the acid-washing procedure of knitted materials. The Elasto Ball consists of natural rubber foam filled with silica and a silica–lignin hybrid derived from rice husks. The efficacy of the filler is enhanced during the manufacturing of Elasto Ball by employing the NXT silane coupling agent throughout the silanization process. The silanized elasto ball exhibits thermal stability up to 400 °C and a porosity of up to 5%. In garment washing assessments, the Elasto Ball can diminish the fabric’s color by 40–50% without causing damage. The findings of this study indicate that Elasto Ball can function as an efficient, eco-friendly substitute for washing balls in garment washing procedures. Full article

As part of this work, polymer composites based on polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) were obtained and used in 3D printing technology, particularly Melted Extrusion Modeling (MEM) technology. The influence of selected fillers on the properties of the obtained composites was investigated. For this purpose, modified fillers such as silica modified with alumina, bentonite modified with a quaternary ammonium salt, and hybrid lignin/silicon dioxide filler were introduced into the PC/ABS matrix. In the first part of this work, polymer blends and their composites containing 1.5–3 wt. of the filler were used to obtain the filament using the proprietary technological line. Moldings for testing the performance properties were obtained using additive manufacturing techniques and injection molding. In the subsequent part of this work, rheological properties (mass flow rate (MFR) and viscosity curves) and mechanical properties (Rockwell hardness and static tensile strength with Young’s modulus) were examined. The structures of the obtained composites were also determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS). The obtained results confirmed the results obtained from a wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis (WAXS). In turn, the physicochemical properties were characterized on the basis of the results of tests using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Based on the obtained results, it was found that the introduced modified additives had a significant impact on the processing and functional properties of the tested composites. Full article

As part of the work, innovative hybrid polymer composites dedicated to rapid prototyping, especially for 3D printing with the melted and extruded manufacturing (MEM) technique, were developed. For this purpose, the influence of modified fillers, such as alumina-modified silica, bentonite modified with quaternary ammonium salt, and lignin/silicon dioxide hybrid filler, on the functional properties of polystyrene-based composites was investigated. The introduced additives were selected to improve the processing properties of polystyrene (PS), in particular its thermal stability, while maintaining good mechanical properties. In the first part of the work, using the proprietary technological line, filaments from unfilled PS and its composites were obtained, which contain modified fillers in the amount of 1.5% to 3.0% by weight. Samples for testing functional properties were obtained by 3D printing in MEM technology and injection technique. The rheological properties—mass melt flow rate (MFR), viscosity, and mechanical properties—are presented in the further part of the work. The size and the respective dispersion in the polystyrene polymer matrix of the fillers used were determined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The correct dispersion of additives in PS was also confirmed by wide-angle X-ray analysis (WAXS). A significant improvement in the thermal stability of the obtained composites after the introduction of fillers into the polymer matrix was confirmed on the basis of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The remaining tests of physicochemical properties, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FT-IR) allowed us to state no significant changes in relation to polystyrene. The obtained test results allowed us to conclude that the amount and type of fillers used in the PS polymer matrix significantly affect the performance properties of the tested hybrid composites. The composites obtained as part of the work can be successfully used in rapid prototyping technologies, especially for the production of details originally designed from PS, which are required to have higher thermal stability than is guaranteed only by the polymer matrix. Oil spills in the marine environment are a rising concern due to their adverse impacts on living creatures and the environment. Hence, remediation methods have been used to remove the oil from the contaminated water. A sorbent material is considered the best method for oil spill absorption. However, commonly used commercial sorbents are made from nonrenewable and nonenvironmentally friendly materials. In this research, natural rubber foam (NRF) was used as a sorbent material with the addition of a filler, i.e., silica and a silica–lignin hybrid, to increase its oil sorption capacity and reusability. The silica and silica–lignin hybrid were extracted from rice husk waste by means of the precipitation method. The silica–lignin hybrid-filled NRF exhibited excellent hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 133°, and had more stable reusability compared to unfilled NRF and silica-filled NRF. In addition, the optimum oil absorption capacity of silica–lignin hybrid-filled NRF was 1.36 g g−1. Overall, the results showed that silica–lignin hybrid-filled NRF has the potential to be developed as a green oil absorbent material and is promising in terms of economic and environmental aspects. The transformation from a fossil-based economy to a sustainable and circular bioeconomy is urgently needed to achieve the climate targets of the Paris Agreement, reduce air pollution and ensure a long-term competitive economy. Due to its carbonaceous and aromatic basic components, lignin has the potential for material valorization within bioeconomy. So far, lignin produced in the pulp and paper industry has mainly been used internally to generate thermal process energy, as it is difficult to extract it from biomass in a pure and unaltered form. The valorization of lignin to improve the economics of pulp mills is a current aim of the industry. Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) of a partial flow from the lignin stream to produce a functional filler for use in polymer blends is one valorization option. The environmental assessment of the lignin-based HTT filler, conducted using life cycle assessment (LCA), shows that substitution of the conventional fillers carbon black and silica could be associated with significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants. Depending on the allocation methodology and the reference filler considered, approx. 5 kg CO2 eq./kg filler, 80–93% SO2 emissions, 27–79% PM emissions, and 88–98% PAH emissions can be saved. In this paper, silica–lignin hybrid materials were used as fillers for a polylactide (PLA) matrix. In order to simulate biodegradation, PLA/hybrid filler composite films were kept in soil of neutral pH for six months. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) allowed analysis of nonisothermal crystallization behavior of composites, thermal analysis provided information about their thermal stability, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to define morphology of films. The influence of biodegradation was also investigated in terms of changes in mechanical properties and color of samples. It was found that application of silica–lignin hybrids as fillers for PLA matrix may be interesting not only in terms of increasing thermal stability, but also controlled biodegradation. To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first publication regarding biodegradation of PLA composites loaded with silica–lignin hybrid fillers. Full article

Functional lignin–SiO2 hybrid fillers were prepared for potential application in binders for phenolic resins, and their chemical structure was characterized. The properties of these fillers and of composites obtained from them with phenolic resin were compared with those of systems with lignin or silica alone. The chemical structure of the materials was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C CP MAS NMR). The thermal stability of the new functional fillers was examined by thermogravimetric analysis–mass spectrometry (TG-MS). Thermo-mechanical properties of the lignin–silica hybrids and resin systems were investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The DMTA results showed that abrasive composites with lignin–SiO2 fillers have better thermo-mechanical properties than systems with silica alone. Thus, fillers based on lignin might provide new, promising properties for the abrasive industry, combining the good properties of lignin as a plasticizer and of silica as a filler improving mechanical properties. An advanced SiO2–lignin hybrid material was obtained and tested as a novel poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) filler. The processing of compounds of poly(vinyl chloride) in the form of a dry blend with silica–lignin hybrid material and, separately, with the two components from which that material was prepared, was performed in a Brabender mixing chamber. An analysis was made of processing (mass melt flow rate, MFR), thermal (thermogravimetric analysis, Congo red and Vicat softening temperature test) and tensile properties of the final PVC composites with fillers in a range of concentrations between 2.5 wt % and 10 wt %. Additionally, the effects of filler content on the fusion characteristics of PVC composites were investigated. The homogeneity of dispersion of the silica–lignin hybrid material in the PVC matrix was determined by optical microscopy and SEM. Finally, it should be noted that it is possible to obtain a PVC composite containing up to 10 wt % of silica–lignin filler using a melt processing method. The introduction of hybrid filler into the PVC matrix results in a homogeneous structure of the composites and positive processing and functional properties, especially thermal stability and Vicat softening temperature.
