This study aims to address the research gap in the digital analysis of traditional patterns by proposing an image-processing-driven parametric modeling method that combines graphic primitive function modeling with topological reconstruction. The image is processed using a dual-channel image processing algorithm (Canny edge detection and grayscale mapping) to extract and vectorize graphic primitives. These primitives are uniformly represented using B-spline curves, with variations generated through parametric control. A topological reconstruction approach is introduced, incorporating mapped geometric parameters, topological combination rules, and geometric adjustments to output topological configurations. The generated patterns are evaluated using fractal dimension analysis for complexity quantification and applied in cultural heritage imaging practice. The proposed image processing pipeline enables flexible parametric control and continuous structural integration of the graphic primitives and demonstrates high reproducibility and expandability. This study establishes a novel computational framework for traditional patterns, offering a replicable technical pathway that integrates image processing, parametric modeling, and topological reconstruction for digital expression, stylistic innovation, and heritage conservation. The transition toward sustainable production requires engineering and science education to adopt active, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented teaching strategies. This article presents a comparative analysis of two educational initiatives implemented in Panama aimed at fostering sustainability competencies at the university and secondary school levels. The first initiative, developed at the Technological University of Panama, integrates project-based learning and circular economy principles into an extracurricular module focused on production planning, sustainable design, and quality management. Students created prototypes using recycled HDPE and additive manufacturing technologies within a simulated startup environment. The second initiative, carried out in two public secondary schools, applied project- and challenge-based learning through the Design Thinking framework, supporting teachers and students in addressing real-world sustainability challenges. Both programs emphasize hands-on learning, creativity, and iterative development, embedding environmental awareness and innovation in both formal and informal educational settings. The article identifies key opportunities and challenges in implementing active methodologies for sustainability education. Challenges such as limited infrastructure and rigid schedules were identified, along with lessons learned for future implementation. Students connected local issues to global goals like the SDGs and saw themselves as agents of change. In language classes, speaking skills are often taken for granted, and not enough attention is paid to developing these skills in a targeted way. In our study, the speaking skills of third-grade students (N = 46) are developed in integrated Lithuanian and English lessons through the analysis of visual material. Visual material is an aid and a means for expanding students’ vocabulary and developing their ability to express their thoughts verbally. The students are aged 9–10 years old. The aim of the study was to investigate the development of third-grade students’ speaking skills using visual material analysis in two languages. The Action Research was conducted in a school in one of Lithuania’s major cities. During the Action Research, students completed mind maps and analyzed visual material by answering questions in two languages. The questions were designed to cover different groups of thinking skills (knowledge and understanding, drawing conclusions, interpretation, and evaluation). The students spoke their prepared answers to the questions. The accuracy and correctness of the answers, English pronunciation, and the ability to speak in complete sentences were evaluated. This study examined how cognitive, affective, and sociocultural factors shape teachers’ readiness for inclusive education, focusing on the interplay between attitudes, emotional concerns, and self-efficacy. A survey of 149 elementary school teachers from diverse communities employed three validated instruments to assess these constructs. Overall, teachers expressed moderately positive attitudes toward inclusion and relatively high levels of self-efficacy, yet emotional concerns were consistently present. Importantly, correlational analyses revealed that emotional concerns fully mediated the relationship between attitudes and self-efficacy, underscoring the central role of affective dimensions in shaping teachers’ professional confidence. Teachers with prior training or direct experience with students with disabilities reported lower emotional concerns, suggesting the value of practice-based professional learning opportunities. Sociocultural differences also emerged, with differences across communities, pointing to the influence of communal norms on emotional readiness for inclusion. These findings highlight the need to reconceptualize teacher professionalism in inclusive education as integrating cognitive, emotional, and contextual dimensions. Implications include designing professional development programs that combine knowledge, practice, and emotional preparedness, alongside culturally responsive approaches tailored to minority communities. Aims: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nurses in a Latin American leadership school who meet advanced nurse standards. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods: Data were collected between January and November 2024 from a total of 92 participants from the Latin American Leadership School of FUDEN-FEPPEN (Foundation for the Development of Nursing—Pan American Federation of Professional Nurses). The response rate was 13%. The Spanish version of the APRD (advance practice role delineation) was validated in Spanish. The study was approved by the Social Ethics Committee of UCLM (Universidad Castilla-La Mancha). Inference analysis was performed to examine factors associated with advanced practice domains. Results: A total of 92 nurses participated in the study. Among the participants, 35.86% (33 nurses) met the requirements for advanced practice nurses and the minimum training required by the International Council of Nurses. Nurses in both primary care and specialized care perform more advanced practice activities in direct care; however, nurses practicing teaching and research perform more advanced practice activities in the indirect practice domains (training, research and teaching). Conclusions: The percentage of nurses participating in the Latin American leadership school who met the standards was determined, with the most frequent domains those related to direct care, such as expert care planning, integrated care, and inter-professional collaboration. Implications for the profession and patient care: To our knowledge, this is the first study that describes the profile of advanced practice nurses in the Latin American context. This study shows that advanced practice activities exist and are practiced, but there is no clear delimitation or regulation of these activities. Reporting method: The study was conducted following the STROBE guidelines. Public contribution: This study did not include patient or public involvement in its design, conduct, or reporting. The integration of emerging technologies is reshaping the teaching skills required in the 21st century, yet little evidence exists on how contextualized training supports rural teachers in adopting active methodologies and critically incorporating AI into entrepreneurship education. This study evaluated the impact of a 40-h professional development program implemented in Educational District 15D01 in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Thirty-nine secondary school teachers participated (mean age = 43.1 years); 36% lacked prior entrepreneurship training, and 44% had not recently mentored student projects. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. The quantitative phase employed a 22-item questionnaire that addressed four dimensions: entrepreneurial knowledge, competencies, methodological strategies, and AI integration. Significant pre–post improvements were found (p < 0.001), with large effects for knowledge (d = 1.43), methodologies (d = 1.39), and AI integration (d = 1.30), and a moderate effect for competences (d = 0.66). The qualitative phase analyzed 312 open-ended responses, highlighting greater openness to innovation, enhanced teacher agency, and favorable perceptions of AI as a resource for ideation, prototyping, and evaluation. Overall, the findings suggest that situated, contextually aligned training can strengthen digital equity policies, foster pedagogical innovation, and empower educators in underserved rural communities, contributing to sustainable pathways for teacher professional development. Background: Children in underdeveloped rural areas of China often face socioeconomic disadvantages, which are associated with low confidence and self-esteem. While SEL programs have shown benefits internationally, evidence from Mainland China is limited. This study examined whether a school-based SEL intervention could improve confidence and self-esteem among children in economically disadvantaged rural areas. Methods: The intervention was a quasi-experimental study conducted in a rural, underdeveloped region of central China. It involved 16 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 min. A total of 230 children aged 8–12 years participated in the intervention school, while 325 children from another school served as the control group. The study used a mixed-methods design, including a quantitative survey administered at baseline, post-intervention, and a 5-month follow-up, as well as qualitative interviews with 83 children, nine caregivers, and eight teachers following the intervention. A linear mixed-effects model was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, while interview data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach. Results: The findings suggested (1) children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds consistently reported lower levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy across all three assessment points. (2) There was a short-term intervention effect on self-esteem, with greater improvements among children from poorer families. (3) The increase in children’s confidence meant they were more able to express themselves and mix with others. (4) Children’s improvements were not sustained up to a 5-month follow-up. Conclusions: The program may be effective in improving children’s confidence and self-esteem in underdeveloped rural areas of China. Such a program may contribute not only to educational outcomes but also to broader efforts aimed at social mobility and poverty reduction. Full article

School textbooks are central to the teaching, studying, and learning processes because they mediate the interaction between the prescribed curriculum and the educational experience in the classroom. Evaluating their didactic structure critically allows us to determine the degree to which they align with current curriculum guidelines and promote meaningful learning. This study aimed to analyze the extent to which Ecuadorian natural science textbooks reflect constructivist learning principles and promote the development of key competencies established in the National Priority Curriculum. This curriculum guides the achievement of essential results and strengthens fundamental competencies for students’ comprehensive development. Content analysis was adopted as the methodological approach given its relevance in examining the didactic and curricular dimensions of educational materials. The analysis covered twelve eighth-grade General Basic Education textbooks and their supplementary materials. The analysis was based on two instruments: specialized summary analysis sheets (RAE) and a purpose-built checklist. The ATLAS.ti 25 and IRaMuTeQ programs supported the systematization and visualization of the data. The results showed limited integration of constructivist strategies, such as teaching for comprehension, inquiry-based learning, and problem solving, in most of the analyzed texts. These findings underscore the need to expand and strengthen the incorporation of contextualized, critical, and meaningful learning experiences to improve the didactic design of school textbooks. Such improvements would promote coherent articulation between objectives, content, methods, resources, and assessment in line with constructivist principles of the Ecuadorian curriculum. Furthermore, given these approaches’ affinity with curricular frameworks in other regional countries, the results could offer relevant guidance and starting points for reflection on developing and using textbooks in Latin American contexts with comparable educational characteristics. Evaporation Duct Height (EDH) is a crucial parameter in evaporation duct modeling, as it directly influences the strength of the waveguide trapping effect and significantly impacts the over-the-horizon detection performance of maritime radars. To address the limitations of low prediction accuracy and limited interpretability in existing deep learning models under complex marine meteorological conditions, this study proposes a surrogate model, BLA-EDH, designed to emulate the output of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) model for real-time EDH estimation. Experimental results demonstrate that BLA-EDH can effectively replace the traditional NPS model for real-time EDH prediction, achieving higher accuracy than Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models. Random Forest analysis identifies relative humidity (0.2966), wind speed (0.2786), and 2-m air temperature (0.2409) as the most influential environmental variables, with importance scores exceeding those of other factors. Validation using the parabolic equation shows that BLA-EDH attains excellent fitting performance, with coefficients of determination reaching 0.9999 and 0.9997 in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, respectively. This research provides a robust foundation for modeling radio wave propagation in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea regions and offers valuable insights for the development of marine communication and radar detection systems. Primary school teaching buildings represent a typical category of densely populated public architecture, where the safe evacuation of occupants is essential to ensuring their safety. The spatial organizational structure plays a pivotal role in determining overall evacuation efficiency. However, systematic research linking spatial organization with evacuation performance remains limited. This study addresses this gap by analyzing 102 real-world cases of primary school teaching buildings, identifying common spatial organizational patterns, and developing a spatial structural framework based on fundamental units and their organizational relationships. A hybrid methodology integrating weighted network analysis and evacuation simulation is employed to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between spatial organization types and evacuation performance, ultimately proposing three design principles—Integrity, Balance, and Stability—to guide evacuation efficiency optimization. The findings provide a methodological reference for evacuation research in public buildings and offer practical design guidance for optimizing primary school facility layouts. Full article

This research presents a comprehensive analysis of green development policies in the building industry in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, examining their evolution and development over the past two decades. The research adopts a structured methodology comprising a policy review to identify relevant policy documents, content analysis to trace the policy framework, and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis to evaluate the policy development, and then generate evidence-based recommendations. As the first comprehensive assessment of green development policy in the Australian building industry, the study proposes targeted policy recommendations based on analyzing the SWOT factors, including policy for the non-residential sectors and construction phase, education and training, financial support and incentives, and innovation and technology adoption. The insights offer guidance for policymakers to strengthen policy integration and accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon building industry. Full article

Urban school environments often face significant thermal discomfort due to extensive paved surfaces, limited vegetation, and outdated building designs. This study examines how green spaces can mitigate temperature extremes and improve thermal comfort at two secondary schools in Coimbra, Portugal: Escola Secundária José Falcão (ESJF) and Escola Secundária D. Dinis (ESDD). Using a mixed-methods approach that combined school community surveys with on-site microclimatic measurements, we integrated user feedback on comfort with data on temperature and humidity variations across different indoor and outdoor spaces. Results revealed that tree-shaded areas consistently maintained lower air temperatures and higher relative humidity than unshaded zones, which experienced intense heat accumulation—up to a 5 °C difference. At ESJF, the older infrastructure and large asphalt surfaces led to severe heat retention, with east-facing classrooms recording the highest indoor temperatures. ESDD’s pavilion-style layout and existing green spaces provided comparatively better thermal conditions, although insufficient vegetation maintenance and limited shade reduced their effectiveness. The findings demonstrate a clear correspondence between the school community’s perceptions of thermal comfort and the measured microclimatic data. Vegetation—particularly deciduous trees—plays a critical role in cooling the school microclimate through shading and evapotranspiration. Strategic interventions such as expanding tree cover in high-exposure areas, installing green roofs and walls, and carefully selecting species can significantly reduce temperature extremes and improve outdoor usability. In addition, fostering environmental education and participatory co-design programs can encourage sustainable behaviors within the school community, underlining the importance of inclusive, nature-based solutions for climate adaptation. This research highlights that integrating green infrastructure in school design and management is a cost-effective strategy for thermal regulation. Green spaces, when co-designed with community involvement, not only enhance climate resilience and student well-being but also contribute to broader sustainable urban development goals. Full article

We selected eight Chinese coastal cities with different backgrounds, quantitatively assessed urban heat island intensity based on summer 2023 Landsat 8 remote sensing data, established block-LCZ spatial analysis units, and employed a combination of machine learning models and causal inference methods to systematically analyze the regional differentiation characteristics of Urban Heat Island Intensity (UHII) and the influence mechanisms of multi-dimensional driving factors within land–sea interaction contexts. The results revealed the following: (1) UHII in the study area presents obvious spatial differentiation, with the highest value occurring in Hong Kong (2.63 °C). Northern cities generally had higher values than southern ones. (2) Different Local Climate Zone (LCZ) types show significant differences in thermal contributions, with LCZ2 (compact midrise) blocks presenting the highest UHII values in most cities, while LCZ G (water) and LCZ A (dense trees) blocks exhibit stable cooling effects. Nighttime light (NTL) and distance to sea (DS) are dominant factors affecting UHII, with NTL marginal effect curves generally presenting hump-shaped characteristics, while DS shows different response patterns across cities. (3) Causal inference reveals true causal driving mechanisms beyond correlations, finding that causal effects of key factors exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity. The research findings provide a new cognitive framework for understanding the formation mechanisms of thermal environments in Chinese coastal cities and offer a quantitative basis for formulating regionalized UHI mitigation strategies. Background/Objectives. Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) capture patients’ perspectives about their health status, quality of life, and medical care outcomes. LIMB-Q Kids is a validated PROM designed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQL) in children with lower limb differences. It evaluates physical, social, and psychological function; symptoms related to the leg, hip, knee, foot and ankle; leg-related distress, appearance, and school-related concerns. It has now been translated and culturally adapted from English to other languages. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt LIMB-Q Kids to Hebrew. Methods. Following international guidelines, two independent forward translations from English to Hebrew were produced and reconciled into a single version. A backward translation was then compared with the original to identify discrepancies. This draft underwent cognitive debriefing interviews (CDIs) with 11 children (ages 8–15) having lower limb differences to assess comprehension and cultural relevance. Results. CDIs revealed general issues including lengthy or unclear text, high-level language, cultural unfamiliarity and duplication of descriptors. Specific to Hebrew, issues included gender inflections and the need for vowel diacritics to support younger, less proficient readers. Revisions to 14 items were made. Conclusions. A translation and cultural adaption (TCA) process led to a linguistically validated and culturally adapted Hebrew version of LIMB-Q Kids. It can now be used for the clinical follow-up of children with lower limb differences including pre- and post-operatively, and as an aid to decision-making for surgery. Full article
