The accumulation of end-of-life tires and the rapid increase in demolition activities pose significant environmental and waste-management challenges. The redevelopment of construction materials incorporating this waste is a potentially promising strategy for minimizing environmental impact while promoting the principles of a circular economy. This study investigates the performance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) incorporating up to 20% rubber aggregates (sand and gravel) and 40% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for non-structural applications. A series of tests was conducted to assess fresh and hardened properties, including flowability, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption, and density. The results indicated that increasing RCA content reduced density and compressive strength, while tensile and flexural strengths were only moderately affected. Response surface methodology (RSM), utilizing a Box–Behnken design, was employed to optimize compressive, tensile, and flexural strength responses. Statistical analysis was used to identify the optimal mix proportions, which balance the mechanical performance and sustainability of SCC with recycled components. Mixtures incorporating moderate rubber content—specifically, 5–5.5% sand rubber and 0–6% coarse rubber—and 40% recycled-concrete aggregate (RCA) achieved the highest predicted performance, with compressive strength ranging from 20.00 to 28.26 MPa, tensile strength from 2.16 to 2.85 MPa, and flexural strength reaching 5.81 MPa, making them suitable for sidewalks and walkways. Conversely, mixtures containing higher rubber proportions (5.5–20% sand rubber and 20% coarse rubber) combined with the same RCA level (40%) showed the lowest mechanical performance, with compressive strength between 5.2 and 10.08 MPa, tensile strength of 1.05–1.41 MPa, and flexural strength from 2.18 to 3.54 MPa. These findings underscore the broad performance range achievable through targeted optimization. They confirm the viability of recycled materials for producing environmentally friendly SCC in non-structural applications. Full article

To reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry and promote a circular economy, this study explores the reuse of waste materials such as glass powder (GP) and nitrile rubber (NR) fibres in concrete. However, the inclusion of these waste materials results in lower compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, limiting their application to non-structural elements. To overcome this limitation, this study adopts the concept of confined concrete by developing concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) stub columns. In total, twelve concrete mix variations were developed, with and without steel tube confinement. GP was utilised at replacement levels of 10–30% by weight of cement, while NR fibres were introduced at 0.5% and 1% by volume of concrete. The findings demonstrate that the incorporation of GP and NR fibres leads to a reduction in compressive strength, with a compounded effect observed when both materials are combined. Steel confinement within CFST columns effectively mitigated the strength reductions, restoring up to 17% of the lost capacity and significantly improving ductility and energy absorption capacity. All CFST columns exhibited consistent local outward buckling failure mode, irrespective of the concrete mix variations. A comparison with predictions from existing design codes and empirical models revealed discrepancies, underscoring the need for refined design approaches for CFST columns incorporating sustainable concrete infill. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of eco-friendly, high-performance structural systems, highlighting the potential of CFST technology in facilitating the adoption of waste materials in the construction sector. This study investigates the impact of partially replacing cement with fly ash (FA) on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (FRRC) incorporating waste tyre rubber and recycled macro-synthetic fibers (MSF). FRRC mixtures were prepared with varying fly ash replacement levels (0%, 25%, and 50%), rubber aggregate contents (0%, 10%, and 20% by volume of fine aggregate), and macro-synthetic fiber dosages (0% to 1% by total volume). The fresh properties were evaluated through slump tests, while hardened properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength were systematically assessed. Results demonstrated that fly ash substitution up to 25% improved the interfacial bonding between rubber particles, fibers, and the cementitious matrix, leading to enhanced tensile and flexural performance without significantly compromising compressive strength. However, at 50% replacement, strength reductions were more pronounced due to slower pozzolanic reactions and reduced cement content. The inclusion of MSF effectively mitigated strength loss induced by rubber aggregates, improving post-cracking behavior and toughness. Overall, an optimal balance was achieved at 25% fly ash replacement combined with 10% rubber and 0.5% fiber content, producing a more sustainable composite with favorable mechanical properties while reducing carbon and ecological footprints. These findings highlight the potential of integrating industrial by-products and waste materials to develop eco-friendly, high-performance FRRC for structural applications, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete infrastructure. Concrete structures increasingly face dynamic loading conditions, such as seismic events, vehicular traffic, and environmental vibrations, necessitating enhanced energy dissipation capabilities. The damping ratio, a critical parameter quantifying a material’s ability to dissipate vibrational energy, is typically low in conventional concrete, prompting extensive research into strategies for improvement. This review comprehensively explores the impact of advanced concrete types—such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs), Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), High-Performance Concrete (HPC), and polymer concrete—on enhancing the damping behavior. Additionally, key mix design innovations, including fiber reinforcement, rubber powder incorporation, and aggregate modification, are evaluated for their roles in increasing energy dissipation. External factors, particularly curing conditions, are also discussed for their influence on the damping performance. The findings consolidate experimental and theoretical insights into how material composition, mix design, and external treatments interact to optimize dynamic resilience. To guide future research, this paper identifies critical gaps including the need for multi-scale numerical simulation frameworks, standardized damping test protocols, and long-term performance evaluation under realistic service conditions. Advancing work in material innovation, optimized mix design, and controlled curing environments will be essential for developing next-generation concretes with superior vibration control, durability, and sustainability. These insights provide a strategic foundation for applications in seismic-prone and vibration-sensitive infrastructure. Full article

With the advancement of modern engineering structures, traditional cement concrete is increasingly unable to meet the mechanical performance requirements under complex conditions. To overcome the performance limitations of materials, modified concrete has become a focal point of research. By incorporating modifying materials such as fibers, polymers, or mineral admixtures, the properties of concrete can be significantly enhanced. Among these, rubberized concrete has attracted considerable attention due to its unique performance advantages. This study conducted fracture tests on rubberized concrete using non-standard concrete three-point bending beam specimens of varying dimensions to evaluate its fracture performance. Employing conventional concrete fracture theoretical models, the fracture toughness parameters of rubberized concrete were calculated, and a comparative analysis was performed regarding the applicability of various theoretical calculation formulas to rubberized concrete. The results indicated that the fracture performance of rubberized concrete varied significantly with changes in specimen size. The initial toughness exhibited a consistent size-dependent variation across different theoretical models. The fracture toughness corresponding to crack height ratios between 0.05 and 0.25 showed contradictory trends; however, for crack height ratios between 0.3 and 0.5, the fracture toughness became consistent. This study integrated boundary effect theory and employed Guinea’s theory to propose an optimization coefficient γ for the double-K fracture toughness formula, yielding favorable optimization results. This study aimed to optimize the performance of pervious concrete (PC) while promoting sustainability using recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) waste, and silica fume (SF). The mixtures were developed using the Taguchi approach with four mix design factors, each at three levels: the water-to-binder ratio (w/b), RCA replacement percentage by weight of natural aggregates, the cement substitution rate with SF, and the SBR addition rate by binder mass. Thus, a total of nine mixes were prepared and tested for density, porosity, permeability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and resistance to freezing and thawing. The results revealed that incorporating RCA and SBR decreased density and compressive strength but increased porosity and permeability. The performance of PC enhanced with SF addition and reduced w/b. TOPSIS was then employed to find the optimum mixture design proportions by considering multiple performance criteria. The results indicated that a high-performing sustainable PC mixture, with enhanced strength and durability characteristics, was formulated with a w/b ratio of 0.30, 25% RCA, 5% SF replacement, and 4% SBR addition. Traditional cementitious coating materials struggle to meet the performance criteria for protective coatings in complex environments. This study developed a polymer-modified cement-based coating material with polymer, silica fume (SF), and quartz sand (QS) as the principal admixtures. It also investigated the influence of material composition on the coating’s mechanical properties, durability, interfacial bond characteristics with concrete, and the durability enhancement of coated concrete. The results demonstrated that compared with ordinary cementitious coating material (OCCM), the interfacial bonding performance between 3% Styrene Butadiene Rubber Powder (SBR) coating material and concrete was improved by 42%; the frost resistance and sulfate erosion resistance of concrete protected by 6% polyurethane (PU) coating material were improved by 31.5% and 69.6%. The inclusion of polymers reduces the mechanical properties. The re-addition of silica fume can lower the porosity while increasing durability and strength. The coating material, mixed with 12% SF and 6% PU, exhibits mechanical properties not lower than those of OCCM. Meanwhile, the interfacial bonding performance and durability of the coated concrete have been improved by 45% and 48%, respectively. The grey relational analysis indicated that the coating material with the best comprehensive performance is the one mixed with 12% SF + 6% PU, and the grey correlation degree is 0.84. Full article

In railway infrastructure, particularly where concrete sleepers are employed, certain critical zones exhibit pronounced degradation of the ballast layer. Previous studies have identified several contributing factors, including the presence of welds, heterogeneity in the substructure beneath the sleepers, and variations in the track’s geometric parameters. Of these factors, the presence of welds seems to have the most significant influence. This article aims to determine whether differences in the ballast railway track’s response to traffic loads at weld locations can be identified in the initial phase, before obvious damage appears. Vibration responses in terms of displacement, velocity, and acceleration were measured on upgraded concrete sleepers equipped with rubber under-sleeper pads. The results indicate that velocities and accelerations at rail weld locations differ significantly from those in adjacent track sections, when the railway track is in an intact, undamaged condition. These results suggest a high likelihood of damage formation in these critical locations, indicating the necessity of preventive measures to mitigate damage. Possible mitigation measures that could help reduce the formation of damage are proposed. Full article

Although asphalt mixtures can be applied to railway tracks due to their viscoelastic properties, caution is required, as their ductility and brittleness are highly sensitive to temperature variations. In recent years, interest in the application of asphalt in railway infrastructure has increased, driven by the development of modified mixtures and the broader availability of performance-enhancing additives. Additionally, evaluation methods for railway tracks should be adapted to account for the distinct loading mechanisms involved, which differ from those of conventional roadways. In this study, the comprehensive properties of asphalt binders, mixtures, and testing methods—including physical and engineering characteristics—were assessed to improve the performance of asphalt concrete layers for potential applications in railroad infrastructure. The results of this study indicate that (1) the higher the performance grade (PG), the higher the indirect tensile strength (ITS) value achieved by the 13 mm mixture using PG76-22, which is higher than that of the PG64-22 mixture. This indicates that higher PG grades and modification contribute to improved tensile strength, beneficial for upper layers subjected to dynamic railroad loads. (2) The tensile strength ratio (TSR) increased from the unmodified mixture to over 92% in mixtures containing crumb rubber modifier (CRM) and styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (STE), demonstrating enhanced durability under freeze–thaw conditions. (3) Wheel tracking test results showed that modified mixtures exhibited more than twice the rutting resistance compared to PG64-22. The 13 mm aggregate mixtures also generally performed better than the 19 mm mixtures, indicating reduced permanent deformation under repeated loading. (4) It was concluded that asphalt is a suitable material for railroads, as its overall characteristics comply with standard specifications. Full article

Reinforced concrete structures are prone to the development of microcracks during service. In this study, a composite-modified epoxy potting adhesive was formulated using nano-TiO2, carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile liquid rubber (CTBN), and the reactive diluent D-669. The mechanical properties and effectiveness of this composite adhesive in repairing oblique cracks were systematically evaluated and compared with those of single-component-modified epoxy adhesives. Key material parameters influencing the performance of oblique crack repair were identified, and the underlying repair mechanisms were analyzed. Based on these findings, a theoretical formula for calculating the shear-bearing capacity of beams with repaired web reinforcement was proposed. Experimental results demonstrated that compared to single-component-modified epoxy resin, the optimally formulated composite adhesive improved the tensile strength, elongation at break, and bond strength by 4.07–21.16 MPa, 13.28–20.4%, and 1.05–3.79 MPa, respectively, while reducing the viscosity by 48–872 mPa·s. The viscosity of the adhesive was found to play a critical role in determining the repair effectiveness, with toughness enhancing the crack resistance and bond strength contributing to the structural stiffness recovery. The adhesive effectively penetrated the steel–concrete interface, forming a continuous bonding layer that improved energy dissipation and significantly enhanced the load-bearing capacity of the repaired beams. Ensuring vibration and impact isolation is crucial in industrial flooring design, especially where vibroacoustic comfort is a priority. Excessive vibrations can negatively affect sensitive equipment, structural durability, and personnel comfort. With the rise of automation and high-precision processes, effective vibration control in floor systems is increasingly important. Traditional solutions like elastomer pads, rubber mats, or floating floors often have high installation costs, complex construction, and long-term degradation. Therefore, there is growing interest in integrated, durable alternatives that can be incorporated directly into concrete structures. One such approach uses rubber granulates from recycled tires as a modifying additive in cementitious composites. This can improve damping, enhance impact energy absorption, and reduce the need for external insulating layers. However, adding rubber particles to concrete may affect its compressive strength, a key design parameter. This article presents experimental research on concrete and mortar mixtures modified with rubber granulates for vibration-isolating industrial floor systems. The proposed solution combines a conventional concrete subbase with a rubber-enhanced mortar layer, forming a composite system to mitigate vibration transmission. Laboratory tests and real-scale verification under industrial conditions showed that the slab with hybrid EPDM/SBR rubber granulate mortar achieved the highest vibration-damping efficiency, reducing vertical acceleration by 58.6% compared to the reference slab. The EPDM-only mortar also showed a significant reduction of 45.5%. Full article

The production of ordinary Portland cement has had a significant environmental impact, leading to increased interest in sustainable alternatives. This comprehensive review thus explores the performance and applications of rubberized alkali-activated concrete (RuAAC), an innovative material combining alkali-activated concrete with crumb rubber (CR) from waste tires as a coarse/fine aggregate replacement. The study examined current research on the components, physical and mechanical properties, and seismic performance of RuAAC structures. Key findings revealed that CR addition enhances dynamic characteristics while reducing compressive strength by up to 63% at 50% CR replacement, though ductility improvements partially offset this reduction. Novel CR pretreatment methods, such as eggshell catalyzation, can enhance seismic resilience potential. While studies on the structural seismic performance of RuAAC are limited, relevant research on rubberized conventional concrete indicated several potential benefits, highlighting a critical gap in the current body of knowledge. Research on the behavior of RuAAC in full-scale structural elements and under seismic loading conditions remains notably lacking. By examining existing research and identifying crucial research gaps, this review provides a foundation for future investigations into the structural behavior and seismic response of RuAAC, potentially paving the way for its practical implementation in earthquake-resistant and sustainable construction. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) offers reduced carbon emissions and employs industrial by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). In this study, the synergistic augmentation of shear carrying capacity in steel-fiber-reinforced rubberized geopolymer concrete (FRGC) incorporating industrial by-products such as fly ash, GGBFS, and recycled rubber for sustainable construction is investigated. The reinforced rubberized geopolymer concrete (RFRGC) mixtures contained 20% rubber crumbs as a partial replacement for fine aggregate, uniform binder, and alkaline activator. The findings revealed that 1.25% steel fiber achieved optimal hardened properties (compressive strength, flexural, and split tensile strength), with 12 M sodium hydroxide and oven curing achieving maximum values. An increase in molarity improved geopolymerization, with denser matrices, while oven curing boosted polymerization, enhancing the bonding between the matrix and the fiber. The effect of steel fiber on the shear carrying capacity of RFRGC beams without stirrups is also discussed in this paper. An increased fiber content led to an increased shear carrying capacity, characterized by an improvement in first crack load and a delayed ultimate failure. These results contribute to sustainable concrete technologies for specifically designed FRGC systems that can balance structural toughness, providing viable alternatives to traditional concrete without compromising strength capacity. Rubberized concrete is a more environmentally friendly material than natural concrete as it helps to reduce rubber disposal issues and has superior impact resistance. Geopolymer concrete, on the other hand, is an economical concrete with higher mechanical properties than nominal concrete that uses fly ash and slag, among other industrial solid wastes, to lower carbon footprints. Rubberized geopolymer concrete (RuGPC) combines the advantages of both concrete types, and a thorough grasp of its dynamic compressive characteristics is necessary for its use in components linked to impact resistance. Despite the advantages of RuGPC, predicting its mechanical characteristics is sometimes difficult because of variations in binder type and combination. This research investigated the combined effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA) on the workability, compressive strength, and stress–strain characteristics of RuGPC with rubber at 0%, 10%, and 20% fine aggregate replacement. Thereafter, energy absorption and ductile characteristics were evaluated through the concrete toughness and ductility index. Numerical models were proposed for the cube compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, and peak strain of RuGPC at different percentages of crumb rubber. It was found that RuGPC made with GGBFS/FA had similar stress–strain characteristics to FA- and MK-based RuGPC. At 20% of crumb rubber aggregate replacement, the workability, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, and peak stress of RuGPC reduced by 8.33%, 34.67%, 43.42%, and 44.97%, while Poisson’s ratio, peak, and ultimate strain increased by 30.34%, 8.56%, and 55.84%, respectively. The concrete toughness and ductility index increased by 22.4% and 156.67%. The proposed model’s calculated results, with R2 values of 0.9508, 0.9935, and 0.9762, show high consistency with the experimental data. RuGPC demonstrates high energy absorption capacity, making it a suitable construction material for structures requiring high-impact resistance. Full article

Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing recycled rubber gains increasing attention for reinforced concrete structures, owing to its benefits in resource-saving and environmental protection. Bonding between rebars and concrete is critical to ensure the composite action in reinforced concrete members. Nevertheless, previous studies on such concrete mainly focused on material aspects. Bonding behavior for rubber RAC is not clear and needs further research. This study aims to clarify the effects of recycled aggregate and rubber on the monotonic and fatigue bond behavior of deformed steel rebar in concrete and to propose predictive models. Pullout tests under monotonic, fatigue, and post-fatigue monotonic loadings are conducted on a total of 21 monotonic and 30 fatigue specimens, including normal concrete, RAC, and rubber RAC. Four types of failure modes are identified for the tested specimens. Effects of the replacement rate of recycled aggregate, rubber, and load level on the fatigue behavior, such as fatigue life, slip-loading cycle curves, slip development, and residual bond strength, are investigated. With the addition of recycled aggregate and rubber, the monotonic bond strength is increased by 60%. Based on the experimental results, theoretical formulas are proposed to predict the monotonic bond strength, fatigue life, and the slip under fatigue loading. The predictive models are verified by the experimental results, for example, the average and COV of the predicted-to-experimental bond strength ratio are 1.0 and 0.11, which proves the reasonability of the proposed models.
