One of the fundamental goals of contemporary mobility is to optimize transport processes in urban areas. The solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the idea of sustainable transport systems based on the Smart City concept. The article presents a case study—an assessment of the possibilities of changing mobility habits based on the idea of sustainable urban transport, taking into account the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyses are based on a comparison of selected means of transport occurring in the urban environment according to several key parameters for the optimization and efficiency of transport processes, i.e., cost, time, travel comfort, and impact on the natural environment, while simultaneously linking them to the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyzed parameters currently constitute the most important group of challenges in the area of shaping and planning optimal and sustainable urban transport. The presented research was used to indicate the connections between various areas of optimization of the transport process and the energy efficiency of individual modes of transport. Analyses have shown that the least time-consuming process of urban mobility is associated with the highest level of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, the highest level of energy efficiency. However, combining public transport with other means of transport can meet most of the transport expectations of city residents, also in terms of energy optimization. The research results presented in the article can contribute to the creation of a strategy for the development of the transport network based on the postulates of increasing the optimization and efficiency of individual means of transport in urban areas. At the same time, recognizing the criterion of energy intensity of means of transport as leading in the development of sustainable urban mobility. Thus, confirming the important role of existing transport systems in the process of shaping and planning sustainable urban mobility in accordance with the idea of Smart City. Full article

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. Analyses of student mobility are typically conducted in an urban environment and are informed by socio-demographic or trip attributes. The prevailing focus is on individual modes of transport, different groups of commuters travelling to campus, students’ behavioural perceptions, and the totality of student trips. This paper starts with the identification of the determinants of student mobility that have received insufficient research attention. Utilising surveys, the study captures the mobility patterns of a sample of 1014 students and calculates their carbon footprint (CF; in kg/academic year) to assess whether the factors neglected in previous studies influence differences in the actual environmental load of student commuting. A regression analysis is employed to ascertain the significance of these factors as predictors of sustainable student mobility. This study exclusively focuses on the group of student commuters to campus and analyses the trips associated with compulsory activities at a suburban campus that is distant from the university centre and student facilities, which changes the mobility context in terms of commuting options. The under-researched factors identified in this research have not yet been quantified as CF. The findings confirm that only some of the factors neglected in previous research are statistically significant predictors of the local environmental load of student mobility. Specifically, variables such as student employment, frequency of class attendance, and propensity for ride-sharing could be utilised to forecast and regulate students’ mobility towards more sustainable patterns. However, all of the under-researched factors (including household size, region of origin (i.e., past experiences), residing at term-time accommodation while studying, and the availability of a family car) have an influence on the differences in CF magnitude in the studied campus. Rockfalls, among the most common natural disasters, pose risks such as traffic congestion, casualties, and substantial property damage. Guizhou Province, with China’s fourth-longest highway network, features mountainous terrain prone to frequent rockfall incidents annually. Consequently, assessing highway rockfall risks in Guizhou Province is crucial for safeguarding the lives and travel of residents. This study evaluates highway rockfall risk through three key components: susceptibility, hazard, and vulnerability. Susceptibility was assessed using information content and logistic regression methods, considering factors such as elevation, slope, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), aspect, distance from fault, relief amplitude, lithology, and rock weathering index (RWI). Hazard assessment utilized a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP), focusing on average annual rainfall and daily maximum rainfall. Socioeconomic factors, including GDP, population density, and land use type, were incorporated to gauge vulnerability. Integration of these assessments via a risk matrix yielded comprehensive highway rockfall risk profiles. Results indicate a predominantly high risk across Guizhou Province, with high-risk zones covering 41.19% of the area. Spatially, the western regions exhibit higher risk levels compared to eastern areas. Notably, the Bijie region features over 70% of its highway mileage categorized as high risk or above. Logistic regression identified distance from fault lines as the most negatively correlated factor affecting highway rockfall susceptibility, whereas elevation gradient demonstrated a minimal influence. This research provides valuable insights for decision-makers in formulating highway rockfall prevention and control strategies. Full article

In the context of promoting sustainable mobility, walking and cycling have been widely recognized for their environmental and health benefits. However, a notable gap often exists between residents’ motivation to engage in these modes and their actual behavior. This study focuses on this motivation–behavior discrepancy and explores how heterogeneous information interventions—within the constraints of the existing built environment—can effectively influence residents’ travel psychology and behavior. Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory, this study aims to uncover the psychological mechanisms behind travel-mode choices and quantify the relative impacts of different types of information interventions. A travel survey was conducted in Yangzhou, China, collecting data from 1052 residents. Cluster analysis was performed using travel psychology data to categorize travel motivations and examine their alignment with actual travel behavior. A random forest model was then employed to assess the effects of individual attributes, travel characteristics, and information intervention attributes on the choice of walking and cycling. The results reveal a significant motivation–behavior gap: while 76% of surveyed residents expressed motivation to walk or cycle, only 30% actually adopted these modes. Based on this, further research shows that informational attributes exhibit a stronger effect in terms of promoting walking and cycling behavior compared to individual attributes and travel characteristics. Among these, health-related information demonstrates the maximum efficacy in areas with well-developed infrastructure. Specifically, health-related information has a greater impact on cycling (21.4%), while environmental information exerts a stronger influence on walking (7.31%). These findings suggest that leveraging information to promote walking and cycling should be more targeted. Full article

Activity space offers a valuable perspective for analyzing urban travel behavior and evaluating the performance of transportation systems in increasingly complex urban environments. However, the research on measuring activity spaces in multimodal transportation contexts remains limited. This study investigates multimodal transportation activity spaces in Hangzhou using 2023 smart card data. Multimodal travel chains are extracted, and residents’ activity spaces are quantified using 95% confidence ellipses. By applying the XGBoost and GeoShapley models, this study reveals the nonlinear effects and geospatial heterogeneity in how built environment and socioeconomic factors influence activity spaces. The key findings show that the distance to the nearest metro station, commercial POIs, and GDP significantly shape activity spaces through nonlinear relationships. Moreover, the interaction between the distance to the nearest metro station and geographical location generates pronounced geospatial effects. The results highlight the importance of multimodal integration in urban transport planning and provide empirical insights for enhancing system efficiency and sustainability. Full article

This research proposes a framework for Eudaimonic well-being in destination competitiveness. This framework is based on the theoretical Ritchie and Crouch’s model (1993, 2000, 2003) and the recent theoretical notion that a travel trip may influence life satisfaction through tourists’ experiences. We conducted a qualitative study based on 34 in-depth interviews with key tourism stakeholders in Cape Verde, a small island developing country (SIDS) dependent on the tourism sector. The findings contribute to identifying specific sources of positive and negative effects that may affect the tourists’ and residents’ overall sense of well-being and thus affect the overall destination competitiveness. A lack of access to healthy food has been a problem for low-income residents in many developed urban areas. Due to travel time and additional transportation costs, these residents often opt for unhealthy food rather than nutritious alternatives. This study examines the spatial distribution of food deserts in Mississauga—one of Canada’s most populous cities and a city with one of the highest diabetes rates in the Province of Ontario. Network analysis was employed to map the geographic inaccessibility to essential nutritious food, defined as residential areas that are beyond a 15-min walking distance from grocery stores. Socioeconomic indicators were integrated to identify and compare the regions that are socioeconomically disadvantaged and, therefore, most affected by food inaccessibility. The results reveal the presence of several food deserts spatially dispersed in Mississauga. The implications of these findings are discussed, with a focus on the relationship between food desert locations and the socioeconomic conditions of the affected residents. This study provides a practical, replicable approach for identifying food deserts that can be easily applied in other regions. The model developed offers valuable tools for policymakers and urban planners to address food desert issues, improving access to healthy food and positively impacting the health and well-being of affected populations. Sustainable urban development takes place in cities that encourage residents to adopt sustainable consumption behaviors. Cities are transforming towards achieving sustainable urban consumption, meeting the needs of communities without compromising the wealth of future generations. A key element of urban development is sustainable urban mobility, which helps improve residents’ quality of life and protect the environment. The development of sustainable mobility is possible thanks to, among others, investment in infrastructure that improves travel. One element of this infrastructure that plays an important role in sustainable mobility is parking lots. They have a significant impact on the quality of life in the city, and searching for available parking spaces is a serious problem in modern urban mobility. This article includes an analysis of parking data obtained from the Intelligent Paid Parking System in the context of sustainable urban consumption. Three streets in the city of Rzeszów were analyzed. For the period under study, the factors determined included parking space utilization indicators, whose average value for the streets analyzed was in the range of 57–59%, and a turnover indicator, whose average value was in the range of 4.8–6.0. These indicators assessed the degree to which city residents are involved in ideas related to sustainable development, as well as their habits in relation to sustainable consumption. Full article

This study investigates the factors affecting the choice of school travel mode among students in Mersin, Türkiye, focusing on walking, private car, public transit and school bus. A two-step modeling approach was adopted. First, a latent class cluster analysis (LCCA) was applied to identify subgroups of students with similar characteristics. Then, separate multinomial logit (MNL) models were estimated for each cluster. The data come from the 2022 Urban Transport Master Plan household survey and include 2798 students from 2092 households. The results show that trip distance is the most consistent and significant factor across all clusters, as increasing distance makes students more likely to use motorized modes instead of walking. Gender also demonstrates a consistent influence in specific clusters, where male students are less likely to travel by private car. Similarly, residing in a single-family house consistently increases the likelihood of car use in multiple clusters. Conversely, the influence of household structure, parental education, income, and household size differs significantly between clusters, underlining the importance of considering group-level differences in school travel behavior. These findings suggest that policies aiming to promote sustainable school travel should be sensitive to the needs of different student groups. Integrating land use and transportation planning may help to support active and shared modes of travel. Full article

Manhole covers are crucial for maintaining urban operations and ensuring residents’ travel. The traditional inspection and maintenance management system based on manual judgment has low efficiency and poor accuracy, making it difficult to adapt to the rapidly expanding urban construction and complex environment of manhole covers. To address these challenges, an intelligent management model based on the improved YOLOv8 model is proposed for three types of urban high-frequency defects: “breakage, loss and shift”. We design a lightweight dual-stream feature extraction network and use EfficientNetV2 as the backbone. By introducing the fused MBConv structure, the computational complexity is significantly reduced, while the efficiency of feature extraction is improved. An innovative foreground attention module is introduced to adaptively enhance the features of manhole cover defects, improving the model’s ability to identify defects of various scales. In addition, an optimized feature fusion architecture is constructed by integrating NAS-FPN modules. This structure utilizes bidirectional feature transfer and automatic structure search, significantly enhancing the expressiveness of multi-scale features. A combined loss function design using GIoU loss, dynamically weighted BCE loss, and Distribution Focal Loss (DFL) is adopted to address the issues of sample imbalance and inter-class differences. The experimental results show that the model achieved excellent performance in multiple indicators of manhole cover defect recognition, especially in classification accuracy, recall rate, and F1-score, with an overall recognition accuracy of 98.6%. The application of the improved model in the new smart management system for urban manhole covers can significantly improve management efficiency. Full article

The equitable allocation of healthcare resources reflects social equity. Previous studies of healthcare accessibility have overlooked the impact of inter-city patient mobility on local residents’ and local residents’ multi-mode travel choices, distorting accessibility calculation outcomes. Taking the area within Beijing’s Sixth Ring Road as an example, this study established a Multi-Mode Accessibility Model for Local Residents (MMALR) to tertiary hospitals, using the proportion of non-local patients to adjust hospital supply capacity and considering the various travel mode shares from residential communities to hospitals to calculate the number of potential patients. We compared the changes in geospatial accessibility under different travel modes and employed the Gini coefficient to evaluate the geospatial equity of accessibility for different regions when using different accessibility methods. The results indicate that the spatial distribution of healthcare accessibility via different methods is similar, and it gradually decreases along subway lines from the urban center to the periphery. We found that the equities in access to high-level healthcare for Dongcheng District, Xicheng District, the area between the Third and Fourth Ring Road, and the area between the Fourth and Fifth Ring Road, display different ranking results across different methods, revealing that an unreasonable analysis framework could mislead the placement decisions for new hospitals or the allocation of medical resources. These findings emphasize the impact of inter-city patient mobility and the diversity of travel mode choices on accessibility. Our model can assist stakeholders in more accurately evaluating the accessibility and equity of local residents in terms of tertiary hospitals, which is crucial for cities with abundant medical resources and superior conditions. Our analytical findings provide a scientific basis for the location decisions of tertiary hospitals. Full article

Subway construction changes land use patterns, disrupting the balance between traffic supply and demand and influencing residents’ activity and travel behaviors along the route. Previous studies have often overlooked the multiple attributes of the subway and their varying impacts on daily activities. To understand how subway construction affects travel and activity patterns, this study analyzed travel data from two years before and after the opening of the Kunming Subway. Propensity score matching was used to control for socioeconomic changes unrelated to the subway. The findings show the following: (1) The subway’s introduction leads to the development of commercial and civic amenities around its stations, attracting wealthier and more educated residents, which contributes to gentrification. (2) Overall, subway construction extends urban residential and employment areas, increasing residents’ dependence on cars and promoting a more motor-centric lifestyle. As a result, the subway’s ability to reduce car usage is limited. (3) The subway alters the impact of the built environment on travel behavior, with residents closer to the subway experiencing shorter travel distances and reduced activity spaces, while those further away maintain longer travel distances and greater activity areas. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to identify and analyze the risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection in hospitalized patients in western Romania. Methods: A total of 312 patients, aged between 2 months and 90 years and residing in both urban and rural communities, were included. Stool samples were collected and analyzed using the CerTest Crypto qualitative chromatographic test and the modified Ziehl–Neelsen staining method (Henricksen & Pohlenz). Risk factors were assessed through a questionnaire completed by patients or by the parents of pediatric patients. Results: The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was 5.77%. Among the evaluated risk factors, only the area of residence showed a statistically significant association (p < 0.05), with a higher prevalence in urban areas (9.2%) compared to rural areas (3.6%). Other factors—including age, gender, contact with animals, pet ownership, handwashing after animal contact, type of housing, fruit washing habits, use of potable water, use of public transportation, international travel, and visits to playgrounds or swimming pools—were not significantly associated with infection. Conclusions: These findings suggest that urban residency may be a significant factor in Cryptosporidium transmission and may inform future research and the development of targeted public health strategies. A Microcirculation Optimization Model for Public Transportation Networks in Low-Density Areas Considering Equity—A Case of Lanzhou

With the increase in urban–rural disparities in China, rural public transportation systems in low-density areas face unique challenges, especially in the contexts of sparse population, complex topography, and uneven resource allocation; research on public transportation in low-density areas has had less attention compared to high-density urban areas. Therefore, how to solve the dilemma of public transportation service provision in low-density rural areas due to sparse population and long travel distances has become an urgent problem. In this paper, a dynamic optimization model based on a two-layer planning framework was constructed. The upper layer optimized the topology of multimodal transportation nodes through the Floyd shortest path algorithm to generate a composite network of trunk roads and feeder routes; the lower layer adopted an improved Logit discrete choice model, integrating the heterogeneous utility parameters, such as time cost, economic cost, and comfort, to simulate and realize the equilibrium allocation of stochastic users. It was found that the dynamic game mechanism based on the “path optimization–fairness measurement” can optimize the travel time, mode, route, and bus stop selection of rural residents. At the same time, the mechanism can realize the fair distribution of rural transportation network subjects (people–vehicles–roads). This provides a dynamic, multi-scenario macro policy reference basis for the optimization of a rural transportation network layout. Full article
