In Central Europe, the fawning season of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) directly overlaps with meadow and alfalfa harvest, typically from late May to early June. During these operations, tens or more likely hundreds of thousands of fawns are mutilated by agricultural machinery. To mitigate this unethical mortality, wildlife managers often deploy odor repellents to drive roe deer individuals from high-risk fields before mowing. Therefore, we evaluated repellent efficacy in a paired design. The abundance of roe deer was quantified by drones equipped with thermal cameras before and after repellent application and then compared with untreated control meadows. Results showed high adult abundance that did not differ significantly among treatments. The highest median was paradoxically observed on meadows “after application” (8.25 ind./10 ha), followed by “not treated” meadows (7.92 ind./10 ha), and “before application” (5.72 ind./10 ha). For fawns, differences between treated and untreated plots were likewise non-significant. Their numbers increased over time after application, consistent with the peak of parturition in the second half of May. Overall, the study confirms that the tested odor repellent, when applied according to the manufacturer’s protocol, did not reduce roe deer presence on meadows. This underscores the need to consider alternative approaches, such as the use of thermal-imaging drones combined with the subsequent translocation of detected fawns to safe locations. Full article

Objectives: To assess the incidence rate of anterior acute uveitis (AAU) in patients with longstanding axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA); to evaluate demographic and clinical characteristics associated with AAU development; and to determine the influence of AAU on bDMARD initiation and retention in this population. Methods: This two-timepoint cohort study analysed data from patients enrolled in the Spanish SpA registry REGISPONSER (2004–2007), who were re-evaluated 17 years later in the REGISPON-3 follow-up study (2021–2023). Information on the date of first AAU episode and bDMARD initiation was collected. Kaplan–Meier and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess AAU incidence, predictors, and its association with time to bDMARD initiation and treatment retention. Results: A total of 299 patients with longstanding axSpA were included, of whom 33.4% experienced at least one episode of AAU, corresponding to an incidence rate of 1.15 per 100 person-years. The cumulative probability of a first episode of AAU increased with disease duration. The relative risk for developing a second episode after the first, compared to the overall risk of any episode in the total population, was 1.85 (95% CI: 1.34–2.57). In multivariable cox analysis, female sex and baseline enthesitis were independently associated with a higher risk of AAU. AAU did not significantly affect the likelihood of subsequent bDMARD initiation, with similar cumulative treatment probabilities in patients with and without AAU. Among treated patients, adalimumab was more frequently prescribed in those with a history of AAU. bDMARD retention rates at two and five years were comparable regardless of AAU status, suggesting that AAU was not associated with long-term treatment persistence. Conclusions: In patients with longstanding axSpA, the incidence of AAU increased steadily over time. However, the presence of AAU did not significantly influence bDMARD initiation or long-term retention in routine clinical practice. Full article

The secretary bird optimization algorithm is a recently developed swarm intelligence method with potential for solving nonlinear and complex optimization problems. However, its performance is constrained by limited global exploration and insufficient local exploitation. To address these issues, an enhanced variant, ORSBOA, is proposed by integrating an optimal neighborhood perturbation mechanism with a reverse learning strategy. The algorithm is evaluated on the CEC2019 and CEC2022 benchmark suites as well as four classical engineering design problems. Experimental results demonstrate that ORSBOA achieves faster convergence, stronger robustness, and higher solution quality than nine state-of-the-art algorithms. Statistical analyses further confirm the significance of these improvements, validating the effectiveness and applicability of ORSBOA in solving complex optimization tasks. Full article

Ectropis grisescens (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is a destructive pest in tea plantations, leading to significant economic losses through defoliation. Existing control strategies, including chemical insecticides and biological agents, are often limited by environmental concerns, resistance, and variable efficacy. Recent evidence suggests that bacteria influence insect physiology and could be leveraged for pest management, but the postmortem microbial ecology of E. grisescens remains uncharacterized. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA sequencing to investigate temporal changes in the bacterial communities of E. grisescens cadavers at 0, 7, and 21 days following cryogenic mortality. Our results indicate a time-dependent decline in microbial diversity, while species richness initially increased before subsequent reduction. The dominant endosymbiont Wolbachia gradually diminished after host death, whereas Enterobacter remained abundant. Notably, non-dominant genera including Lysinibacillus and Sporosarcina exhibited a transient increase in abundance at day 7 before reverting to control levels by day 21. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of postmortem microbial succession in a lepidopteran system, highlighting dynamic shifts in bacterial composition and offering potential avenues for microbiome-based pest management strategies. Background: Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe zoonotic viral infection with high mortality rates. This study aimed to examine the prognostic value of new-generation inflammatory markers—CRP/albumin ratio (CAR), D-dimer/albumin ratio (DAR), D-dimer/fibrinogen ratio (DFR), and triglyceride-glucose index (TGI)—in predicting mortality among patients diagnosed with CCHF. Methods: This prospective study involved 76 patients with a positive polymerase chain reaction test for CCHF and 38 age- and sex-matched healthy controls between 15 April 2023 and 15 October 2024. Participants’ demographic, clinical, and laboratory data at presentation were recorded. Results: CAR, DAR, DFR, and TGI levels were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (all p < 0.001). Furthermore, when mortal cases were compared with survivors, all of these markers were found to be significantly higher in the mortal group (p = 0.005, p = 0.004, p = 0.001, and p = 0.003, respectively). In Kaplan–Meier analysis, survival time was significantly shorter in patients with higher levels of these parameters (p < 0.001 for all). In the Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis conducted to differentiate mortal cases from survivors, DFR and TGI were identified as the markers with the highest predictive power (area under the curve: 0.938 and 0.899, respectively). Conclusions: Inflammatory markers CAR, DAR, DFR and TGI may serve as significant prognostic tools to predict mortality in CCHF. Full article

Achieving optimal daylighting in buildings necessitates complex and expensive control systems. This research addresses this challenge by proposing a simple and more practical solution: a parametric louver system based on rotating slats controlled by stepper motors, powered by an Integrated Circuit platform (Arduino board), which can translate the digital figures (the rotation angles) to a physical action. The system automatically adjusts the slats in accordance with solar altitudes and reflects them to specific targets over the ceiling. This ensures a uniform and comfortable distribution of daylight throughout a room. This system was developed using Grasshopper as the parametric software, with future control planned via a user-friendly mobile app through a preliminary prototype. This daylighting system prioritises human visual comfort while targeting a significant 53% reduction in electrical lighting energy consumption. The system aims to enhance occupant well-being to significantly increase energy savings, making it a compelling solution for sustainable building design. Full article

The 3D chromatin architecture establishes a complex network of genes and regulatory elements necessary for transcriptomic regulation in development and disease. This network can be modeled by cis-regulatory hubs (CRH), which underscore the local functional interactions between enhancers and promoter regions and differ from other higher-order chromatin structures such as topologically associated domains (TAD). The activity-by-contact (ABC) model of enhancer–promoter regulation has been recently used in the identification of these CRHs, but little is known about the role of transcription factor CCTC binding factor (CTCF) on ABC scores and their consequent impact on CRHs. Here, we show that the loss of CTCF leads to a reorganization of the ABC-derived rankings of putative enhancers in the mouse heart, a global reduction in the total number of CRHs and an increase in the size of CRHs. Furthermore, CTCF loss leads to a higher percentage of CRHs that cross TAD boundaries. These results provide additional evidence to support the importance of CTCF in forming the regulatory networks necessary for gene regulation. Full article

Blockchain technology has become a game changer in sectors like accounting and auditing. Its usage is still restricted due to a lack of insight into what drives people to adopt it for financial services like accounting and auditing. This research delves into the factors that influence the adoption of blockchain systems in accounting and auditing services by utilizing an enhanced edition of the Theory of Planned Behavior. In this study, alongside the previously established elements like Attitude, subjective norm, and Perceived Behavioral Control, self-perception and personal moral values are included to reflect how identity and ethics impact decision-making processes. Data were gathered via an online survey (N = 751) conducted on the Prolific platform, and the hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Modeling. The hypotheses were examined through the Structural Equation Modeling method. The findings indicate that each of the five predictors plays a significant role in influencing Behavioral Intention, with personal moral values being the influential factor followed by subjective norm and Perceived Behavioral Control. Attitude plays an important role in shaping adoption choices and showcases the complexity involved in such decisions. As such, it is crucial to take into account ethical factors when encouraging the use of blockchain technology. This study adds to the existing knowledge of the Theory of Planned Behavior framework, offering insights for companies aiming to boost the implementation of blockchain systems in professional settings. Future research avenues and real-world implications are explored with an emphasis placed on developing targeted strategies that align technological adoption with personal values and organizational objectives. The cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a globally important oilseed and economic crop, but its narrow genetic base limits breeding progress. Wild Arachis species represent valuable genetic resources for enhancing the resilience of the peanut cultigen. While wild species from section Arachis are widely used in breeding programs, the detection of alien chromosomes in hybrids remains challenging due to limited molecular tools. In this study, a cost-effective and efficient system was established for generating species-specific molecular markers using low-coverage next-generation sequencing data, bypassing the need for whole-genome assembly. Utilizing the Chorus2 software, specific alien-chromosome oligo (SAO) markers were developed for four wild species, A. duranensis (accession A19), A. pusilla (A10), A. appresipilla (A33), and A. glabrata (G2 and G3). A total of 1166 primer pairs were designed, resulting in 220 SAO markers specific to A. duranensis, 77 to A. pusilla, 112 to A. appresipilla, 69 to A. glabrata G2, and 59 to A. glabrata G3, with the highest development efficiency observed in A. duranensis (55.0%). These markers span all chromosomes of the five wild accessions. Genome-wide, chromosome-specific SAO markers enable the efficient detection of introgressed alien chromosomes and provide insight into syntenic relationships among homoeologous chromosomes. These markers offer an effective tool for identifying favorable genes and facilitating targeted introgression for the genetic improvement of the cultivated peanut. Full article

The induction of robust CD8 T cell immunity after intramuscular (i.m.) mRNA vaccination has remained a challenge. Due to the limited presence of professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in muscle tissue, this route of administration tends to result in the transfection of muscle cells at the injection site with insufficient T cell activation capacity. The attraction of migratory APCs and related processes that lead to the acquisition of antigenic material from transfected non-APCs arises as a potential alternative to facilitate activation of CD8 T cells in the draining lymph nodes. This indirect pathway, known as antigen cross-presentation, has remained underappreciated for mRNA vaccines. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of this process. Due to the paucity of information available in this context, it also extrapolates from insights for antigen cross-presentation more generally and for traditional vaccines. Arguments are provided as to why this natural process in the context of pro-drugs, such as mRNA vaccines, may engender both specific and nonspecific responses and, in certain situations, evoke cross-tolerance rather than immunity. This widely unaccounted T cell activation process may, therefore, explain several key mysteries surrounding i.m. RNA vaccination, including its impact on heterologous infections. But it also raises numerous open questions that are clearly described. Full article

Background: This study examined changes in psychological adjustment among patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) following a 3-week inpatient multidisciplinary (disease-tailored) rehabilitation program. Methods: twenty consecutive Italian female adults with a diagnosis of AN (mean age ± SD: 25.9 ± 9.4 years; mean Body Mass Index: BMI: kg/m2: 15.8 ± 1.61) and fifteen consecutive Italian female adults with diagnosis of BED (mean age ± SD: 43.5 ± 15.3 years; mean Body Mass Index: BMI: kg/m2: 41.1 ± 7.82) were admitted to the study. Psychological functioning and well-being were assessed pre- and post-intervention using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Psychological General Well-Being Index. Results: Significant improvements in emotional symptoms [F(1, 31) = 21.1973, p < 0.001, ƞ2p = 0.406] and overall psychological functioning [F(1, 31) = 10.0062, p = 0.373, ƞ2p = 0.026] were observed in both groups, with the most pronounced changes in internalizing symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. Changes in BMI were significantly associated with emotional symptoms, vitality [F(1, 31) = 4.89, p = 0.035, ƞ2p = 0.136], and total well-being scores [F(1, 31) = 6.341, p = 0.017, ƞ2p = 0.170]. By contrast, no significant changes were observed in domains such as behavioral problems, hyperactivity/inattention, and peer relationships, probably indicating the need for more prolonged and targeted, domain-specific interventions. Conclusions: A 3-week inpatient multidisciplinary program was associated with improvements in internalizing symptoms and psychological well-being in women with AN and BED. Domains such as behavioral regulation and social functioning showed limited change, indicating the need for longer and targeted psychosocial components. Full article

Accurate leaf area measurement is essential for plant growth monitoring and ecological research; however, it is often challenged by perspective distortion and color inconsistencies resulting from variations in shooting conditions and plant status. To address these issues, this study proposes a visual and semi-automatic measurement system. The system utilizes Hough transform-based perspective transformation to correct perspective distortions and incorporates manually sampled points to obtain prior color information, effectively mitigating color inconsistency. Based on this prior knowledge, the level-set function is automatically initialized. The leaf extraction is achieved through level-set curve evolution that minimizes an energy function derived from a multivariate Gaussian distribution model, and the evolution process allows visual monitoring of the leaf extraction progress. Experimental results demonstrate robust performance under diverse conditions: the standard deviation remains below 1 cm2, the relative error is under 1%, the coefficient of variation is less than 3%, and processing time is under 10 s for most images. Compared to the traditional labor-intensive and time-consuming manual photocopy-weighing approach, as well as OpenPheno (which lacks parameter adjustability) and ImageJ 1.54g (whose results are highly operator-dependent), the proposed system provides a more flexible, controllable, and robust semi-automatic solution. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder with a fairly constant worldwide prevalence of 1 case per 311 individuals worldwide. It is characterized by severe hypercholesterolemia from birth, early atherosclerosis and death from cardiovascular disease at a young age. Diagnosis and treatment from childhood are essential to reduce cardiovascular mortality. Many countries have developed a strategy of implementing pediatric screening, which has led to an increase in diagnoses. This paper evaluates the screening strategies implemented in different countries worldwide. First, we examined which schemes were preferred in various national contexts in Europe. Next, we evaluated the screening methods used in the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. Finally, we researched the screening strategies proposed in some low-resource countries, discovering the difficulties and limitations they face. We have highlighted a wide range of realities, from small-scale pilot studies to cutting-edge proposals. We have also emphasized that, while the topic is certainly of interest, it is burdened by multiple difficulties and unresolved questions. Full article

Grout voids in external tendons of post-tensioned bridges are a critical issue, as they may result in the corrosion of the steel strands and significantly reduce tendon strength. Therefore, preventing tendon failure necessitates thorough inspection for these voids during both construction and operation. Terahertz electromagnetic wave testing is an effective method for detecting voids between the protective duct and the grout in external tendons, as terahertz waves can penetrate through the protective duct. This study introduces a D-band electronic frequency-modulated continuous-wave terahertz A-scanner for enhanced real-time inspection. The proposed method offers key advantages such as miniaturization, cost-effectiveness, and robustness, while providing effective detection of voids beneath the duct in external tendons. It is indicated that voids with a thickness of approximately 2.5 mm or greater can be detected using the D-band THz A-scanner. Full article

Migration to Italy and Integration into the European Space from the Point of View of Romanians

This study investigates the determinants of Romanian workers’ migration intentions towards Italy, integrating economic, social, and psychological perspectives. Based on a sample of 358 respondents, four hypotheses were tested concerning perceived living standards, working conditions, quality of public services, and anticipated integration difficulties. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s rho correlation, Mann–Whitney U, Chi-square, ANOVA, and ordinal logistic regression. The results confirm that higher perceived living standards and better working conditions in Italy significantly increase the likelihood of expressing migration intentions, while favourable evaluations of healthcare and education act as additional pull factors. Conversely, anticipated integration difficulties, particularly language barriers and cultural adaptation, reduce migration intentions, indicating that socio-psychological obstacles can counterbalance economic incentives. By combining non-parametric and multivariate analyses, the study demonstrates that migration is a multidimensional process shaped not only by structural opportunities but also by behavioural and psychological appraisals. These findings are consistent with recent research on European labour mobility and contribute to the literature by highlighting the role of subjective perceptions in shaping migration decisions. Implications for policy include the need to address both economic disparities and integration barriers to support more balanced mobility within the European space. Full article
