We propose a tunable multi-functional metamaterial composed of two pairs of gold corner resonators interconnected with photosensitive silicon, operating in the terahertz range. This design achieves dual-band unidirectional reflectionlessness, polarization conversion, and asymmetric transmission for linearly polarized waves, regardless of whether the photosensitive silicon is in the insulating or conductivity state. When the photosensitive silicon transitions from the insulating state to the conductivity state, its conductivity increases significantly, resulting in a frequency shift phenomenon in the functional peak frequencies. Numerical simulations demonstrate the structure’s robust performance in dual-band unidirectional reflectionlessness and its significant asymmetric transmission, with minimal sensitivity to variations in the incident angle and photosensitive silicon sheet length. By integrating multiple functionalities and enabling frequency tunability through the control of photosensitive silicon conductivity, this design offers a reconfigurable solution for THz applications, such as switches, polarization converters, and modulators. The traditional approach to optical design faces limitations as photonic devices grow increasingly complex, requiring advanced functionalities. Recently, machine learning algorithms have gained significant interest for extracting structural designs from customized wavelength spectra, surpassing traditional simulation methods known for their time-consuming nature and resource-demanding computational requirements. This study focuses on the inverse design of a reflectionless multilayer thin-film structure across a specific wavelength region, utilizing a tandem neural network (TNN) approach. The method effectively addresses the non-uniqueness problem in training inverse neural networks. Data generation via the transfer matrix method (TMM) involves simulating the optical behavior of a multilayer structure comprising alternating thin films of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon (Si). This innovative design considers both reflection and absorption properties to achieve near-zero reflection. We aimed to manipulate the structure’s reflectivity by implementing low-index and high-index layers along with Si absorption layers to attain specific optical properties. Our TNN demonstrated an MSE accuracy of less than 0.0005 and a maximum loss of 0.00781 for predicting the desired spectrum range, offering advanced capabilities for forecasting arbitrary spectra. This approach provides insights into designing multilayer thin-film structures with near-zero reflection and highlights the potential for controlling absorption materials to enhance optical performance. Absorptive bandpass filters (ABPFs) are highly attractive in modern microwave communication systems due to their ability to internally absorb the harmful stopband RF-power reflections. This paper reports an approach to designing quasi-elliptic ABPFs with ultra-wide reflectionless range, enhanced selectivity, and compact size. The method is realized based on a fourth-order quasi-elliptic absorptive lowpass filter (ALPF) prototype with a simplified structure. This ALPF prototype exhibits both good impedance-matching over the whole normalized frequency domain and an adjustable transmission zero close to the passband. By applying an equivalent impedance transformer model, a coupled-line-based ABPF scheme is devised from the ALPF prototype, which eliminates conventional dispersive transmission line inverters, resulting in an ultra-wide reflectionless range and a compact size. Closed-form equations are derived to support the filter synthesis. A 2.45 GHz microstrip ABPF with 30% fractional bandwidth is designed for verification. The measured minimum in-band insertion loss is 0.83 dB and the reflectionless range of return loss better than 10 dB is from DC to 12.88 GHz. Both the upper and lower stopband suppression exceed 20 dB, with the upper stopband extending up to 6.80 GHz. The upper and lower out-of-band roll-off rates are 93.9 and 121.4 dB/GHz, respectively. The overall circuit size is 0.12 λg2. Full article

A vibration absorber consisting of a one-dimensional waveguide with a reflectionless termination extracts vibrational energy from a structure that is to be damped. An optimum energy dissipation occurs for the so-called power adjustment, i.e, the same level of resistance and the opposite reactance of structure and absorber. The dimensioning of these impedance parameters on the base of the classic second order “two-way” wave equation provides analytical solutions for a few simple waveguide shapes; solutions for all other waveguides are only accessible via numerical finite-element computation. However, the competing first order “one-way” wave equation allows for an analytical conception of both the known broadband vibration absorber and the “Acoustic Black Hole” absorber. For example, for an exponential waveguide, the two-way calculation shows no resistance (and hence no real wave propagation) below a cut-off frequency, while the one-way wave equation predicts absorption in the whole frequency range. For highly reliable and compact communication of front-end modules, a miniaturized reflectionless band-pass filter, based on the GaAs integrated passive device (IPD) process, is proposed in this work. The stop-band signal absorption rate of the filter can reach more than 90% and greatly reduce the influence of electromagnetic interference for sensitive devices. First, a circuit topology of reflectionless filter is proposed. Then, the miniaturized reflectionless band-pass filter is designed and fabricated based on GaAs IPD process with a compact size of only 0.85 mm × 1.33 mm × 0.09 mm (0.011λ × 0.018λ × 0.001λ). The filter operates at frequency ranging from 3.3 GHz to 4.5 GHz for 5G communication, the insertion loss (S21) is less than 3 dB, the return loss in the passband (S11) is over 15 dB, the stopband return loss (S11) is over 10 dB, and the out-of-band suppression (S21) reached 19 dB. All the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. It shows great potential in the process of designing highly reliable and compact monolithic integrated wireless modules and wearable electronics. Full article

Dual-band unidirectional reflectionless propagation at two exceptional points is investigated in metamaterial, which is composed of only two gold resonators with circular holes, by simply manipulating the angle of incident wave and distance between two resonators. Furthermore, the dual-band unidirectional reflectionless propagation can be realized in the wide ranges of incident angle from 0 to 50 and distance from 255 nm to 355 nm between two resonators. In addition, our scheme is insensitive to polarization of incident wave due to the circular-hole structure of the resonators. Full article
