Tropical cyclones can rapidly alter watershed chemistry by shifting hydrologic pathways and mobilizing stored nutrients, yet these disturbances often remain undetected when storms cause little visible flooding or geomorphic damage. During Hurricane Helene 2024, intense rainfall across the Oconee River watershed in Georgia generated sharp increases in discharge that triggered substantial nutrient export despite minimal physical alteration to the landscape. High-frequency measurements of nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate in urban, forested, and recreational settings revealed pronounced and synchronous post-storm increases in all three solutes. Nitrate showed the strongest and most persistent response, with mean concentrations increasing from approximately 1–3 mg/L during pre-storm conditions to 6–14 mg/L post-storm across sites, and remaining elevated for several months after hydrologic conditions returned to baseline. Phosphate concentrations increased sharply during the post-storm period, rising from pre-storm means of ≤0.3 mg/L to a post-storm average of 1.5 mg/L, but declined more rapidly during recovery, consistent with sediment-associated mobilization and subsequent attenuation. Sulfate concentrations also increased substantially across the watershed, with post-storm mean values commonly exceeding 20 mg/L and maximum concentrations reaching 41 mg/L, indicating sustained dissolved-phase release and enhanced temporal variability. Recovery trajectories differed by solute: phosphate returned to baseline within weeks, nitrate declined gradually, and sulfate remained elevated throughout the winter. These findings demonstrate that substantial chemical perturbations can occur even in the absence of visible storm impacts, underscoring the importance of event-based, high-resolution monitoring to detect transient but consequential shifts in watershed biogeochemistry. They also highlight the need to better resolve solute-specific pathways that govern nutrient mobilization during extreme rainfall in mixed-use watersheds with legacy nutrient stores and engineered drainage networks. Grasslands represent an essential resource for rural economies and for the provision of ecosystem services, yet they are increasingly affected by anthropogenic pressures, functional land-use changes, and institutional constraints. This study develops a geospatial decision-support framework for assessing grassland suitability in Hunedoara County, Romania, by integrating the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Overlay Analysis (WOA) within a GIS environment. The assessment is based on nine criteria thematically grouped into three dimensions: (A) physical-geographical, including topographic suitability, climatic pressure, and hydrological risk exposure; (B) ecological and conservation-related, reflected by ecological conservation value, ecological carrying capacity, and the anthropic pressure index; and (C) socio-economic and functional, represented by spatial accessibility, recreational value, and policy support mechanisms. Suitability is defined as the integrated capacity of grasslands to sustain productive and multifunctional uses compatible with ecological conservation and the existing policy framework. Results indicate that 0.43% of the grassland area exhibits very high suitability (Class 1), 44.51% high suitability (Class 2), and 54.75% moderate suitability (Class 3), while unfavorable areas account for only 0.31% of the total (Class 4). The proposed methodology is reproducible and transferable, providing support for prioritizing management interventions, agri-environmental payments, and rural planning in mountainous and hilly regions. This study presents a comprehensive geospatial framework for assessing coastal vulnerability and ecosystem service distribution along the Greek coastline, one of the longest and most diverse in Europe. The framework integrates two complementary components: a Coastal Erosion Vulnerability Index applied to all identified beach units, and Coastal Flood Risk Indexes focused on low-lying and urbanized coastal segments. Both indices draw on harmonized, open-access European datasets to represent environmental, geomorphological, and socio-economic dimensions of risk. The Coastal Erosion Vulnerability Index is developed through a multi-criteria approach that combines indicators of physical erodibility, such as historical shoreline retreat, projected erosion under climate change, offshore wave power, and the cover of seagrass meadows, with socio-economic exposure metrics, including land use composition, population density, and beach-based recreational values. Inclusive accessibility for wheelchair users is also integrated to highlight equity-relevant aspects of coastal services. The Coastal Flood Risk Indexes identify flood-prone areas by simulating inundation through a novel point-based, computationally efficient geospatial method, which propagates water inland from coastal entry points using Extreme Sea Level (ESL) projections for future scenarios, overcoming the limitations of static ‘bathtub’ approaches. Together, the indices offer a spatially explicit, scalable framework to inform coastal zone management, climate adaptation planning, and the prioritization of nature-based solutions. By integrating vulnerability mapping with ecosystem service valuation, the framework supports evidence-based decision-making while aligning with key European policy goals for resilience and sustainable coastal development. Background/Objectives: Although numerous studies have examined associations between screen time and early language development, less is known about how screen exposure interacts with developmental stage, digital content quality, and parental mediation across childhood and adolescence, particularly with respect to pragmatic communication. This study aimed to address these gaps by examining the joint associations of screen time, content composition, and parental mediation with multiple linguistic and pragmatic domains across a broad age range. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 286 Romanian participants aged 5–19 years, grouped into four developmental stages. Measures included daily screen time, proportion of educational versus recreational content, parental mediation practices, and standardized assessments of vocabulary, verbal fluency, grammatical competence, and pragmatic communication. Analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, 4 × 3 factorial ANOVAs (age group × screen-time category), and multiple linear regression. Results: Higher levels of screen exposure were consistently associated with lower performance across all linguistic and pragmatic domains (r = −0.19 to −0.28, all p < 0.01). Participants viewing >2 h/day showed significantly weaker outcomes than those with ≤1 h/day, particularly in semantic and phonemic fluency and pragmatic communication (p < 0.001). Educational content correlated positively with linguistic scores, whereas recreational content showed negative associations. Parental mediation emerged as a significant positive predictor. In the regression model (R2 = 0.42), age (β = 0.47), parental mediation (β = 0.21), and educational content (β = 0.18) predicted better linguistic performance, while screen time (β = −0.29) predicted lower performance. Conclusions: The findings indicate that associations between digital media use and linguistic and pragmatic performance vary across developmental stages and contextual factors. Rather than screen time alone, digital content quality and parental mediation are associated with differences in communicative performance. These results highlight the value of a nuanced, developmentally informed perspective when considering children’s digital media environments. Full article

Background/Objectives: Gunshot wounds in living patients present significant challenges from both a clinical and a forensic perspective. Understanding the exact trajectory of a bullet is crucial not only for guiding treatment but also for providing reliable documentation in legal settings. This work introduces a practical diagnostic workflow that combines OsiriX (V. 14.1.1), a DICOM viewer with advanced 3D tools, with Autodesk Maya, a modeling platform used to recreate the external shooting scene. Methods: CT scans obtained with multidetector systems were analyzed in OsiriX using a structured, seven-step process that included multiplanar reconstructions, 3D renderings, and region-of-interest tracking. The reconstructed trajectories were then exported to Maya, where they were integrated into a virtual model of the shooting scene to correlate internal findings with the incident’s external dynamics. Results: The workflow allowed precise identification of entry and exit points, reliable reconstruction of bullet paths, and effective 3D visualization. While OsiriX provided detailed information for clinical and radiological purposes, the use of Maya enabled simulation of the external scene, improving forensic interpretation and courtroom presentation. The procedure proved reproducible across cases and compatible with emergency timelines. Conclusions: The combined use of OsiriX and Maya offers a reproducible and informative method for analyzing gunshot wounds in living patients. This approach not only supports surgical and diagnostic decisions but also enhances the forensic value of radiological data by linking internal trajectories to external shooting dynamics. Its integration into trauma imaging protocols and forensic workflows could represent a significant step toward standardized ballistic documentation. Full article

The territorial development of the city of Brno during the 19th–21st centuries meant not only the growth of built-up areas (residential, industrial, commercial), but also the absorbing of segments of the ancient rural agricultural landscape. Within the current borders of the city of Brno, a number of green areas have been preserved, which have spontaneously developed from the original agricultural landscape, without being the result of urban planning. In half of the cases (17 out of a total of 34), they have still preserved the traditional small-scale division of land. Among the 10 medium-sized Moravian cities (between 30,000 and 400,000 inhabitants) in the historical region of Moravia in the east of the Czech Republic, the presence of 34 remnants of the ancient rural landscape in the city of Brno is quite exceptional (in Ostrava only 1; in other cities 0). The subject of the research is the inventory of such segments within the city borders and an attempt to explain their location in the city, state, focusing on the role of natural factors, land ownership and personal and recreational interests of residents. Segments of the ancient rural cultural landscape were identified by comparing the current landscape on aerial photographs with the landscape image on cadastral maps from the 1820s–1830s. Additional data on their natural and cultural properties were obtained through archival and field research. The segments were classified according to their degree of preservation and forms of threat. The results show that the remains of the ancient rural cultural landscape in the city of Brno have generally been preserved in locations that, due to the slope of the slopes, unsuitable building subsoil and poor soil, but locally on warm southern slopes, were not suitable for construction for the time being. Urban gardening contributes to their preservation and these areas are part of the city’s greenery. However, urban gardening also contributes to the destruction of these remnants. In 17 cases, the land was completely re-divided, built up with recreational facilities and overgrown with trees due to poor care. Another 17 locations are threatened by this process due to ignorance of their historical value, although this is essentially a positive development in terms of benefits for the city’s residents—land users. Although the Master Plan of the city of Brno foresees the existence of garden colonies in the future, it does not address the importance of the best-preserved segments as historical heritage. Community agriculture can play a positive role in maintaining segments of rural heritage within the city. Full article

The architecture of spas and recreational complexes is increasingly being analyzed not only through the prism of its formal diversity but also through its functional, technical, and esthetic responses to evolving societal expectations. This article descriptively examines the context of evolving user needs and select examples representing new architectural forms integrated into the landscape, responding to the growing demand for beauty (understood subjectively), experiences, and emotional value in 21st-century tourism and recreation. The most diverse and characteristic examples were selected and described in order to maintain a broad context of analysis and illustrate contemporary changes as faithfully as possible. The descriptive approach enables a systematic and comprehensive representation of phenomena, identifying recurring patterns, spatial trends, and contextual relationships. Rather than being limited to numerical data, it provides a structured analytical framework that supports the objective documentation of architectural and urban processes. The aim of this study is to systematize selected design trends that reflect contemporary cultural aspirations and environmental concerns, and to illustrate the evolving relationship between architecture, nature, and users. The results indicate a consistent shift toward landscape-integrated, experiential, and esthetically driven architectural solutions, demonstrating that contemporary tourism facilities increasingly prioritize atmosphere, immersion in nature, and sensory engagement over traditional utilitarian design. This study concludes that beauty, understood as subjective esthetic experience, has become a key determinant in shaping new architectural forms, reinforcing the role of architecture as both a cultural expression and a tool for enhancing well-being in tourism and leisure environments. This study investigated the impact of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) on the parameters of the 3 min all-out test (3MT) in non-motorized tethered running, applying the concept of complex networks for integrative analysis. Ten recreational runners underwent anthropometric assessments, a one-repetition maximum test (1RM), a running ramp test, and 3MT trials under both PAPE and CONTROL conditions across five separate sessions. The conditioning activity consisted of two sets of six back squats at 60% 1RM. For each scenario, complex network graphs were constructed and analyzed using Degree, Eigenvector, PageRank, and Betweenness centrality metrics. In the PAPE condition, anthropometric parameters and parameters related to aerobic efficiency exhibited greater centrality, ranking among the top five nodes. Paired Student’s t-tests (p ≤ 0.05) revealed significant differences between conditions for end power (EP-W) (CONTROL: 407.83 ± 119.30 vs. PAPE: 539.33 ± 177.10 (effect size d = −0.84)) and end power relativized by body mass (rEP-W·kg−1) (CONTROL: 5.38 ± 1.70 vs. PAPE: 6.91 ± 2.00 (effect size d = −0.76)), as well as for the absolute and relative values of peak output power, mean output power, peak force, and mean force. These findings suggest that PAPE alters the configuration of complex networks, increasing network density, and may enhance neuromuscular function and running economy. Moreover, PAPE appears to modulate both aerobic and anaerobic contributions to performance. These results highlight the importance of network-based approaches for advancing exercise science and providing individualized strategies for training and performance optimization. Full article

Globally, more than 60,000 abandoned open-pit mines have been identified. Most of these sites lack effective management or ecological restoration measures. As a result, they pose substantial environmental and socioeconomic challenges. Against this backdrop, the reuse of quarry wastelands has emerged as a critical strategy for improving resource efficiency and promoting sustainable development in mining regions. Current domestic research mainly concentrates on ecological restoration techniques for abandoned quarry sites. However, systematic methods for prioritizing and ranking alternative reuse models remain limited. This study investigated four quarry reuse models: agricultural production, ecological protection, recreation-based education, and new energy development. The analysis integrated site suitability (U1) with residents’ demands (U2). Four representative quarry sites in Jiawang District, Xuzhou City, were selected as case studies. Based on coupled matching analysis, a priority identification method for quarry site reuse models was developed. Results indicated divergent prioritization between site suitability and resident demand. Site suitability composite values ranged from 3.9548 to 6.3094. Qishan and Kanshan sites demonstrated high suitability for recreation-based education and agricultural production, while the Dongshan site showed the highest ecological protection suitability. Suitability for emerging energy applications was generally low across all sites. Resident demand composite values showed significant variation across the four models. Recreation-based education demand (U2 ranging from 0.3273 to 0.3778) substantially exceeded the other three land use types, with residents generally harbouring a degree of reluctance towards new energy development models. After coupling these factors, the original site suitability rankings were restructured: Qishan and Dongshan were selected for the recreation-based education model; Kanshan for agricultural production; and Changshan for ecological protection. This study offers insights for the diversified utilization of abandoned quarries in rural areas and provides a reference for ecological restoration and transformative development in mining regions. This study presents the on-site public evaluation of Notre-Dame Whispers, a geolocated audio-guided tour that explores the sonic history of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. The experience combines binaural reproduction, embodied storytelling, and historically informed soundscapes to immerse visitors in the cathedral’s past auditory environments. Drawing on virtually recreated acoustics, it reconstructs key components of Notre-Dame’s sound heritage, including the medieval construction site, early polyphonic chant, and the contemporary urban soundscape. An on-site evaluation was conducted to assess visitor engagement, usability, and the perceived authenticity of the reconstructed soundscapes. A mixed-methods approach integrated questionnaire responses, semi-structured interviews, and anonymized user analytics collected through the mobile application. Results indicate a high level of immersion, with participants particularly valuing the spatialised audio design and narrative depth. However, challenges were identified regarding GPS-based triggering reliability and the difficulty of situational interpretation in complex spatial environments. These findings offer insights into public reception of immersive heritage audio experiences and inform future developments in digital cultural mediation. Full article

Family Allotment Gardens (FAGs) represent key components of urban cooling and air-purification systems. However, research has mainly focused on their social roles and on their contributions to food production. This study quantified the capacity of FAGs in Warsaw (Poland) to provide two key ecosystem services at distances up to 300 m from their boundaries: air-pollution filtration and microclimate regulation. Measurements of particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), air temperature and relative humidity were conducted along transects inside and outside three allotment complexes in autumn 2023, a period characterised by increased traffic emissions and elevated particulate levels. The results show a moderate but significant reduction in PM concentrations inside gardens (by about 2 µg/m3; r = 0.22–0.29) and slightly higher humidity (by 2.1%; r = −0.34). The cooling effect was weak (<0.3 °C; r = 0.06), indicating a limited spatial range under autumn conditions, though selected transects exhibited stronger local effects. The results confirm that FAGs can contribute to air purification and local climate regulation, but their effectiveness depends on vegetation structure and urban context. Strengthening their role requires integration with green-infrastructure planning and emission-reduction practices within gardens. FAGs, beyond their recreational and productive value, should be recognised as active components of urban adaptation strategies. Full article

Human recreation is an increasingly popular activity; however, an increase in recreational pressure in wilderness areas can contribute to issues such as human–wildlife conflict, introduction of invasive species, vegetation and soil degradation, riparian area impacts, and anthropogenic waste. While remote camera studies are frequently used to assess the response of wildlife species (i.e., grizzly bears) or ecosites (i.e., coastal sand dunes) to human recreational disturbance, classifying and quantifying human recreational behavior, including differences in spatial, temporal, and recreation types, is less common and presents unique design challenges. Here, we present our practical design considerations and lessons learned from a study quantifying human recreation along trails in the northern Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. We describe our standardized protocol to deploy our camera array, and image classification and analysis of recreation use by type and group size. Finally, we provide practical recommendations for future work attempting to evaluate human recreation in wilderness settings relative to landscape management outcomes. Full article

This study uses the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), a quantitative approach, with interval regression and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models to assess the non-use values of the Zhongjieshan and Liuheng Marine Ranches. The aim of the study is to quantify the monetary value of non-market benefits, examine socioeconomic influences on stakeholders’ Willingness to Pay (WTP), and provide a basis for ecological compensation mechanisms. Zhongjieshan’s annual non-use value is estimated at 28.99–30.81 million CNY (Chinese Yuan) (median WTP 74.33–78.99 CNY per person), while Liuheng’s value is higher at 108–111 million CNY (median WTP 150.20–153.89 CNY per person), suggesting greater ecological and recreational potential at Liuheng. The results show robust model performance, with minimal WTP differences. WTP for Liuheng is primarily influenced by income and environmental awareness, while Zhongjieshan shows a distance-decay effect. Visitor profiles reveal that Zhongjieshan attracts younger, moderately educated visitors, while Liuheng draws more highly educated, economically diverse groups. These findings suggest that Zhongjieshan should prioritize community-based co-management, while Liuheng should focus on high-quality, technology-driven ecological leisure development. The study also emphasizes the need for targeted awareness campaigns and supports the creation of diversified ecological compensation mechanisms beyond government funding. Full article

In order to analyze the effect of environmental factors on the release of negative air ions (NAI) by green tree species, this study conducted an open top chamber (OTC) control test in Beijing. The tree species selected were Acer truncatum, Sophora japonica, Pinus bungeana, and Pinus tabuliformis. The experiment investigated the effects of environmental factors on NAI release under different relative humidity conditions. The results of the study showed that (1) the NAI release contribution (L), NAI release coefficient (n), NAI release rate (s), NAI instantaneous present amount (v), and total NAI release amount (Z) all showed positive responses to humidity. (2) Under constant temperature and light intensity, all five capability indicators increased with the humidity gradient (40–80%) and reached their maximum values at 80% humidity. (3) NAI release was positively correlated with humidity, and the correlation coefficients were: Pinus tabuliformis (R2 = 0.33) > Sophora japonica (R2 = 0.17) > Acer truncatum (R2 = 0.15) = Pinus bungeana (R2 = 0.15, p < 0.05). (4) Under constant temperature and light intensity, the NAI release contribution (L) and NAI release coefficient (n) responded most strongly to humidity in the 40–60% range, while the total NAI release amount (Z), NAI release rate (s), and NAI instantaneous present amount (v) responded more significantly in the 60–80% range. Acer truncatum showed the strongest response in terms of NAI release contribution (L) and NAI release coefficient (n), while Sophora japonica exhibited the most significant response in terms of NAI release rate (s), NAI instantaneous present amount (v), and total NAI release amount (Z). This study, conducted using an OTC, clarifies the independent role of humidity on NAI released by green tree species, providing a scientific basis for forest recreation and urban green space planning. Deindustrialization has left many industrial buildings inactive, raising questions about their role in contemporary urban life. This article explores how semiotics and psychogeography can reframe such structures as dynamic architectural happenings, shifting emphasis from preservation toward social value and collective experience. This research focuses on Komotini, Greece, where the Technical Chamber Square is reinterpreted through references to the adjacent Tobacco Warehouse. By integrating architectural traces of the past into new recreational and sporting functions, this study demonstrates how heritage can be embedded into everyday practices. Methodologically, this research employs qualitative approaches, including demographic and historical analysis of Komotini’s urban and industrial development, alongside psychogeographic drifting walks. Twenty interviews were conducted with local business owners, residents, and visitors, as well as psychogeographic walks, generating insights into how communities interact with industrial heritage. The findings indicate that semiotics and psychogeography are effective tools for activating public spaces near former industrial sites, enabling the built environment to be understood as a layered record of successive interventions. The study concludes that adaptive redesign offers designers a methodology that can embed industrial fragments into vibrant public realms that sustain diverse communities, catalyze local economies, and honor historical identity through lived practices.
