Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges in social interaction, communication and emotional regulation. Recent research has explored the potential influence of anime consumption among children with ASD, and the current findings suggest both beneficial and adverse effects. This review examines the role of anime in fostering social learning, emotional resilience, and cognitive engagement while also addressing concerns regarding its cultivation of social withdrawal, unrealistic expectations, and over-reliance on fictional narratives. By analyzing existing literature, this paper provides insights into the nuanced relationship between anime and ASD, highlighting the possibility that patterns of engagement may be associated with both positive and negative outcomes. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for parents, educators, and clinicians seeking to support the well-being and development of children with ASD. Full article

Middle leaders are acknowledged as important leaders within schools to support and improve teaching and learning. While middle leaders’ (MLs) knowledge and skills are foundational for contributing to school improvement, social emotional intelligence (SEI) has been identified as a crucial capability for developing and maintaining trusting relationships and collaborative teams, both of which are essential for leading school improvement, a central focus of ML work. To understand the empirical evidence base on MLs and SEI, a scoping literature review was conducted. Although empirical research was limited, SEI consistently emerged as a critical factor influencing a range of middle leadership (ML) outcomes. To extend the review findings, a problem-centered interview approach was undertaken with five MLs. The interviews sought to identify the SEI competencies perceived as supportive of ML practices and positive outcomes for both MLs and colleagues. Insights from the literature review and interviews converged to highlight empathy and emotional self-management as foundational SEI competencies. Both competencies were found to underpin several key leadership outcomes, including the regulation of emotions, both personal and interpersonal, for the development of collegial relationships, and the enhancement of ML wellbeing. Considering these findings, professional learning (PL) to foster ML SEI competencies is presented. Full article

This study examines differences in perceived parental emotional availability, emotion regulation (ER), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among adolescents, considering gender, age, and family structure. It also assesses contextual differences in ER (at home vs. at school) and investigates the mediating role of ER in the relationship between perceived parental emotional availability and HRQoL. The sample consisted of 202 Portuguese adolescents (M age = 13.44 years, SD = 1.01; 52.5% girls) who participated in this cross-sectional study. Self-report scales were used to assess perceived emotional availability, ER, and HRQoL, with data collected during classes using a paper-and-pencil procedure. The results showed that girls’ perceptions of mother and father emotional availability were smaller than perceptions reported by boys; girls reported lower HRQoL. Also, adolescents from divorced/separated families reported higher levels of expressive suppression at home and lower HRQoL. Both maternal and paternal perceived emotional availability were positively associated with better HRQoL in adolescents. Furthermore, expressive suppression (within the home context) and cognitive reappraisal (within the school context) partially explained these associations. These findings have important implications for both practice and research, highlighting the significance of perceived parental emotional availability and the role of ER in enhancing adolescents’ HRQoL. Background and Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is becoming increasingly common in contemporary society, is recognized for its considerable psychosocial impact on pregnant women throughout the perinatal phase. The purpose of this research was to explore the possible links between mental health status and dietary habits among pregnant women diagnosed with GDM, alongside examining how these factors correlate with clinical indicators like HbA1c measurements and the necessity for insulin therapy. Materials and Methods: The study included 82 pregnant participants, 37 with gestational diabetes mellitus and 45 without. Blood samples were collected from all participants for biochemical analysis, including fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, and HbA1c levels, which can be clinical indicators for the presence of gestational diabetes mellitus, and the need for insulin treatment was recorded. Then, participants completed a questionnaire collecting sociodemographic and clinical data as well as the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Salzburg Emotional Eating Scale (SEES), and REZZY Eating Disorders Scale (REZZY). Data were statistically analyzed. Results: A previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes was more frequent in the case group (18.9%) than in the control group (2.2%) (p = 0.020). OGTT positivity was detected in 56.8% of the case group, whereas all control participants had negative results (p < 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in psychological symptom scores or eating behavior assessments (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus were observed to score higher on measures of anxiety, depression, and emotional eating, particularly in response to negative emotions. These findings may indicate a potential association between gestational diabetes and psychological or behavioral factors related to metabolic regulation during pregnancy. Full article

The increase in school violence, especially post-pandemic, has been widely addressed in various research studies. This pilot study, carried out in the Araucanía Region (Chile), aims to explore the relationship between negative emotional self-regulation of stress and perceptions of school violence. A cross-sectional and descriptive methodology was used, with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to evaluate the validity of the scales applied, and a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the influence of self-regulation on the perception of types of school violence. The participants were 239 students between the ages of 9 and 15 (M = 11.45; SD = 1.47). The results showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between negative stress self-regulation and the perception of school violence, indicating that those with a greater tendency to avoid negative emotions perceived or experienced more violence. The findings suggest that emotional self-regulation, particularly avoidance, can be a relevant factor in the perception and management of school violence, highlighting the importance of educational interventions and policies that promote adaptive emotional skills within the school context. This study examines how emotional intelligence and frustration intolerance influence academic performance in university students, drawing on the Job Demands–Resources model—which frames academic success as a balance between psychological demands (such as frustration intolerance) and personal resources (like emotional intelligence)—and Self-Determination Theory, which explains how motivation and self-regulation contribute to adaptation and persistence in challenging contexts. A sample of 630 undergraduates across various disciplines completed validated measures of emotional intelligence, frustration intolerance, academic burnout, academic engagement, and grade point average. Structural equation modeling analyzed relationships among these variables. The results showed that emotional intelligence positively predicted academic performance both directly and indirectly by increasing engagement and reducing burnout. Conversely, frustration intolerance negatively affected academic performance through increased burnout and decreased engagement. The model explained 24 percent of the variance in academic performance. These findings indicate that academic achievement depends on managing the balance between psychological demands and personal resources. Frustration intolerance acts as a psychological demand increasing vulnerability to exhaustion and disengagement, while emotional intelligence serves as a personal resource supporting self-regulation, motivation, and persistence. This highlights the importance of fostering emotional skills and frustration tolerance in higher education to help students cope better with academic challenges and improve performance. Full article

Background: Interoception, the multifaceted perception of internal bodily signals, is crucial for homeostasis, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. Physical exercise significantly influences interoceptive mechanisms through its varied physiological, neurobiological, and psychological impacts. Despite its potential to enhance this internal sensing across its dimensions and foster adaptive behaviors like self-regulation, exercise remains an underutilized therapeutic approach. Objective: This narrative review explores the current understanding of the interplay between exercise and interoception, examining its resulting impact on both mental and physical health. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed using keywords such as “interoception,” “exercise,” and “well-being.” Article selection prioritized empirical studies, reviews, and influential theoretical papers. The synthesis of the literature was performed through a thematic analysis, structured around three primary mechanisms: physiological changes, neurobiological adaptations, and psychological benefits. Key Findings: Engaging in exercise improves interoceptive function by inducing physiological changes, fostering neurobiological adaptations, and yielding psychological advantages such as reduced stress. This enhancement in internal bodily sensing, encompassing its various dimensions, and promotion of adaptive behaviors has notable consequences for well-being. Conclusions and Future Directions: Exercise presents a valuable and readily available means to enhance interoceptive processing and encourage adaptive behaviors, with substantial positive implications for well-being throughout life. Future studies should focus on identifying the most effective exercise approaches tailored to individual requirements and exploring their specific impact on different interoceptive dimensions. Integrating exercise into clinical treatment plans and public health strategies offers a promising path to substantially boost well-being. Full article

Objective: Considering the absence of research testing the entire sequence of passion, behavioral regulation, and subjective well-being (SWB), this study aimed to analyze the hypothetical causal relationships between the variables of a model that integrates the Dualistic Passion Model (DMP) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in order to understand the impact of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) and the regulation of motivation on the SWB of elite athletes with disability. Method: This study includes 143 elite athletes from national adapted sports (36 female; 107 male) aged between 15 and 59 (M = 29.21; SD = 10.45). Weekly training sessions ranged from 1 to 12 (M = 4.52; SD = 2.71), and the years of competitive practice ranged from 1 to 28 (M = 5.55; SD = 6.98). Data were collected using valid and reliable questionnaires for the study population and analyzed using structural equation analysis. The following results were identified: a positive and a significant effect between OP and self-determination motivation (SDM); a positive but not a significant effect between OP and non-self-determination motivation (NSDM); a significant effect between SDM and SWL and SDM and positive affect (PA); and, finally, a positive but non-significant effect between SDM and negative affect (NA). In contrast, there is a positive and significant effect between HP and SDM; a negative and significant effect between HP and NSDM; a positive but non-significant effect between NSDM and SWL; a negative and significant effect between NSDM and PA; and, finally, a positive and significant effect between NSDM and NA. Conclusions: The perception of passion regarding sport can be a positive predictor of SDM, which, in turn, can influence levels of SWB, both from a cognitive point of view (SWL) and from an emotional point of view (PA). This reinforces the positive effect of the self-determination behavior in adapted sport on SWB and its contribution to health and quality of life in people with disabilities. Full article

In crisis-stricken economies, leadership effectiveness increasingly hinges not on technical expertise alone but on emotional competence. While emotional intelligence (EI) has been widely acknowledged as a catalyst for effective leadership and employee outcomes, its role in volatile and resource-scarce contexts remains underexplored. This study addresses this critical gap by investigating the impact of five core EI dimensions, namely self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, on employee performance amid Lebanon’s ongoing multidimensional crisis. Drawing on Goleman’s EI framework and the Job Demands–Resources theory, the research employs a quantitative, cross-sectional design with data collected from 398 employees across sectors in Lebanon. Structural Equation Modeling revealed that all EI dimensions significantly and positively influenced employee performance, with self-regulation (β = 0.485) and empathy (β = 0.361) emerging as the most potent predictors. These findings underscore the value of emotionally intelligent leadership in fostering productivity, resilience, and team cohesion during organizational instability. This study contributes to the literature by contextualizing EI in an under-researched, crisis-affected setting, offering nuanced insights into which emotional competencies are most impactful during prolonged uncertainty. Practically, it positions EI as a strategic leadership asset for crisis management and sustainable human resource development in fragile economies. The results inform leadership training, policy design, and organizational strategies that aim to enhance employee performance through emotionally intelligent practices. Full article

Participation in organized sport is widely encouraged for youth development, yet positive outcomes are not guaranteed. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping young athletes’ experiences, requiring emotional support, interpersonal skills, and self-regulation. This study examines the meanings parents attribute to their children’s sports participation and how young athletes construct their experiences under parental and coaching influences. An interpretive phenomenological methodology involved semi-structured interviews with coaches, focus groups with parents, and open-ended questionnaires to young athletes. Seventeen players (M = 11.2 years, SD = 0.59), nineteen parents (M = 47.6 years, SD = 3.61), and two coaches from the same football club volunteered to participate in the study. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure a homogeneous experience. The findings reveal that parental involvement balances support and pressure, while trust-building between parents and coaches significantly impacts the athletes’ experiences. The evolving role of technology and the importance of social dynamics within teams also emerged as critical factors. Intrinsic motivation, fostering emotional bonding through the sport, and adopting a developmental rather than purely competitive framework were emphasized factors identified as supporting positive youth sport experiences. These findings offer insights into how interconnected relationships among parents, coaches, and athletes influence children’s sports engagement and development. Full article

Psychological stress and dietary behavior are interdependent forces that greatly influence mental and physical health. Thus, both what and how we eat impact our well-being. Maladaptive eating patterns, such as eating in response to emotional cues rather than physiological hunger, have become increasingly common amid modern stressors and an ultra-processed food environment. This narrative review synthesizes interdisciplinary findings from nutritional psychiatry, microbiome science, and behavioral nutrition to explore how stress physiology, gut–brain interactions, and dietary quality shape emotional regulation and eating behavior. It highlights mechanisms (e.g., HPA-axis dysregulation, blunted interoception, and inflammatory and epigenetic pathways) and examines the evidence for mindful and intuitive eating; phytochemical-rich, whole-food dietary patterns; and the emerging role of precision nutrition. Trauma-informed approaches, cultural foodways, structural barriers to healthy eating, and clinical implementation strategies (e.g., interprofessional collaboration) are considered in the context of public health equity to support sustainable mental wellness through dietary interventions. Ultimately, restoring a healthy relationship with food positions nutrition not only as sustenance but as a modifiable regulator of affect, cognition, and stress resilience, central to mental and physical well-being. Background/Objectives: This study explores the perspectives of mental health professionals on tailoring the Mentis Plus intervention to enhance positive mental health (PMH) in individuals experiencing First-Episode Psychosis (FEP). Although the Mentis Plus Program has been previously implemented in other contexts, it has not yet been applied to FEP care. Therefore, this study aimed to adapt the intervention for future implementation through expert consultation. Methods: A qualitative exploratory-descriptive design was employed. Data were collected via three focus groups comprising multidisciplinary professionals experienced in FEP care. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine the data. Results: Participants viewed the tailored Mentis Plus intervention as a valuable, recovery-oriented tool. Key recommendations included a flexible, group-based format with eight weekly sessions. Suggested intervention components encompassed gratitude journaling, emotional regulation techniques, and collaborative problem-solving exercises. Group delivery was highlighted as essential for mitigating isolation and promoting peer support. Practical implementation strategies included phased session structures and routine emotional check-ins. Identified barriers to implementation included the need for specialized training, limited therapeutic spaces, and the heterogeneity of participant needs. Facilitators included a person-centered approach, institutional backing, and sufficient resources. Conclusions: The findings support the feasibility and clinical relevance of a tailored Mentis Plus FEP Program—Brief Version. Expert-informed insights provide a foundation for adapting mental health interventions to early-psychosis care and inform future research and implementation strategies. Full article

Background: Adolescence is a key period of development characterized by emotional, cognitive, and social changes that impact positive mental health (PMH). While social support is a well-established protective factor, cognitive and emotional processes, such as cognitive fusion and regulation of distress, also play a critical role. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship among various cognitive (i.e., cognitive fusion), emotional (i.e., regulation of distress), and social determinants (i.e., social support) in adolescents’ PMH, as their interplay could reflect theoretical models highlighting how these factors jointly shape adolescents’ mental health. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 505 adolescents (aged 13–15 years) in Spain. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing sociodemographic variables, cognitive fusion, regulation of distress, PMH, and social support from friends. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and mediation and moderated mediation models were conducted, adjusting for relevant covariates. Results: Cognitive fusion was negatively correlated with regulation of distress, PMH, and social support, whereas regulation of distress showed a positive association with both PMH and social support. Mediation analysis indicated that regulation of distress significantly mediated the relationship between cognitive fusion and PMH. Furthermore, peer support moderated this mediated relationship: higher levels of support mitigated the negative impact of regulation of distress on PMH. Sociodemographic analyses revealed that girls, non-national students, and those receiving educational support showed less favorable outcomes. Conclusions: Cognitive, emotional, and social variables jointly influence adolescents’ PMH. Emotional regulation serves as a mediator of cognitive fusion and PMH, while social support from peers mediates the impact of psychological distress. Targeted interventions should prioritize emotional regulation strategies and enhancing peer support, especially among more vulnerable groups. Full article

Urban wetlands are increasingly recognized for their ecological and cultural benefits, yet remain underutilized due to limited public awareness and environmental literacy. This study investigates how visitors’ perceptions of wetland ecosystem services influence their motivations to engage with a constructed wetland in Putrajaya, Malaysia. By integrating the ecosystem services framework with push-pull motivation theory, the research aims to bridge knowledge gaps and inform sustainable wetland tourism planning. A structured questionnaire was administered to 420 visitors, with 385 valid responses (response rate: 91.7%). Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests (Kruskal–Wallis, Spearman correlation) and multiple regression analysis. Results show that cultural and regulating services are perceived most positively, while emotional restoration and aesthetic appreciation emerged as key motivational drivers. Regression findings reveal that push factors are stronger predictors of ecosystem service engagement than pull factors. These insights highlight the importance of emotional and psychological connections to nature, offering practical implications for urban wetland management, visitor education and environmental communication strategies. Mental health difficulties in university students are an increasing concern, especially after the COVID-19 global crisis. This study used a cross-sectional design to analyze the effect of psychological factors on students’ psychological well-being. Participants were 190 university students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs at a public university. Based on previous research and grounded theoretical models, a conceptual model was proposed to analyze the influence of affect states/experiences (emotion regulation difficulties, anxiety and depression, perceived stress, self-compassion, gratitude, and satisfaction with life) on psychological well-being, including the indirect effect of emotions (negative emotions, positive activation emotions, self-efficacy emotions, prosocial emotions, and serenity emotions), using a path analysis. Multigroup analyses were also performed to test the moderating effect of gender and education level. Findings indicated that self-efficacy emotions had an indirect effect on the relationship between anxiety and depression, self-compassion, and psychological well-being. Both prosocial and self-efficacy emotions indirectly impacted the relationship between gratitude, satisfaction with life, and psychological well-being. Being a female and a bachelor student played a moderating role in the final model. The findings suggest that psychological interventions focused on self-efficacy and prosocial emotions are needed to increase psychological well-being in university students. Full article
