Groundwater resources in Jordan are under severe stress due to rapidly increasing water demand and over-abstraction that far exceeds natural replenishment. In addition, water quality is threatened by pollution from the misuse of fertilizers and pesticides, leakage from septic tanks, and illegal waste disposal. This study focuses on the Aqeb, Corridor, and Special Economic Zone wellfields, where hydrological and hydrochemical investigations were carried out. A total of 36 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for hydrochemical composition, stable isotopes of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δ2H), and trace elements. In addition, two exploration 2D seismic profiles crossing the study area were interpreted, providing critical insights into the activity of the subsurface Fuluk Fault zone and its relationship with the wellfields. The hydrochemical results reveal elevated total dissolved solids and nitrate concentrations, accompanied by more depleted δ18O and δ2H values in wells located in the central part of the study area. Three distinct hydrochemical groups were identified within the same aquifer, indicating heterogeneity in groundwater chemistry that reflects variations in recharge conditions, flow paths, and geochemical processes. The first group (high Na/Cl with low salinity) likely represents recently recharged waters with limited rock–water interaction. The second group (intermediate Na/Cl and moderate salinity) may be influenced by evaporation, irrigation return flow, or cation exchange. The third group (low Na/Cl with high salinity) suggests the dissolution of sulfate minerals or mixing with deeper mineralized groundwater, possibly facilitated by structural features such as the Fuluk Fault. Seismic interpretation indicates several active near-surface fault systems that are likely to serve as preferential pathways for salinity and nitrate enrichment, linked to intensive agricultural activities and wastewater leakage from nearby septic tanks. The findings emphasize the combined influence of geochemical processes, excessive groundwater abstraction, and structural features in controlling water quality in the region. Full article

The lack of an established seaweed aquaculture industry in the Atlantic Southeast reflects the persistent challenges in identifying macroalgal species that can consistently produce year-round under regional environmental conditions. As a result, in this study, locally abundant Charlestonian Ulva spp. were selected as sustainable algal candidates for a pilot investigation, due to their resilience to abiotic (e.g., seasonal changes in temperature and nutrients) and biotic (e.g., predation and epiphytes) factors, thus allowing for practical land-based aquaculture. Ulva spp. were analyzed for their seasonal biomass and potential bioremediation applications using the existing land-based aquaculture infrastructure of the SCDNR in Charleston, South Carolina. The biomass of tank-cultivated Ulva spp. was monitored on a biweekly basis for 16 months and was found to be highest (31.8 kg) in the spring, increasing by 22% in just two weeks as water temperatures rose. A synthetic nutrient fertilizer was incorporated into aquaculture at the latter stages of this study to observe the effects on algal biomass while simulating an anthropogenic event. Interestingly, inorganic supplementation did not induce growth but was absorbed by the algal tissue, significantly lowering the δ15N to <7‰. Additionally, Vibrio spp. bacteria proliferated following the inorganic nutrient spike, while coliform populations decreased. Biochemical composition analyses comparing tank-cultivated and wild in situ Ulva spp. revealed variations in essential trace element (e.g., potassium: tank—19,530; wild—5520 mg/kg) concentrations, yet shared similar trace metal (e.g., arsenic: tank—4.47; wild—4.52 mg/kg) and pesticide (e.g., DEET: tank—0.048; wild—0.040 mg/kg) concentrations. This is the first reported macroalgal aquaculture research in South Carolina and serves as a pilot study for future research or commercialization in the Lowcountry and the greater southeastern coastal communities of the United States. In mountainous citrus orchards, the application of conventional ground sprayers for the control of citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) is often constrained by complex terrain and low operational efficiency. The Unmanned Aerial Spraying System (UASS), due to its low-altitude, low-volume, and high-maneuverability characteristics, has emerged as a promising alternative for pest management in such challenging environments. To evaluate the spray performance and field efficacy of different UASS types in controlling P. citri, five representative UASS models (JX25, DP, T1000, E-A2021, and T20), four mainstream pesticide formulations, and four novel tank-mix adjuvants were systematically assessed in a field experiment conducted in a typical hilly citrus orchard. The results showed that T20 delivered the best overall spray deposition, with upper canopy coverage reaching 10.63%, a deposition of 3.01 μg/cm2, and the highest pesticide utilization (43.2%). E-A2021, equipped with a centrifugal nozzle, produced the finest droplets and highest droplet density (120.3–151.4 deposits/cm2), but its deposition and coverage were lowest due to drift. Nonetheless, it exhibited superior penetration (dIPR 72.3%, dDPR 73.5%), facilitating internal canopy coverage. T1000, operating at higher flight parameters, had the weakest deposition. Formulation type had a limited impact, with microemulsions (MEs) outperforming emulsifiable concentrates (ECs) and suspension concentrates (SCs). All adjuvants improved spray metrics, especially Yimanchu and Silwet, which enhanced pesticide utilization to 46.8% and 46.4% for E-A2021 and DP, respectively. Adjuvant use increased utilization by 4.6–11.9%, but also raised ground losses by 1.5–4.2%, except for Yimanchu, which reduced ground loss by 2.3%. In terms of control effect, the rapid efficacy (1–7 days after application, DAA) of UASS spraying was slightly lower than that of ground sprayers—electric spray gun (ESG), while its residual efficacy (14–25 DAA) was slightly higher. The addition of adjuvants improved both rapid and residual efficacy, making it comparable to or even better than ESG. E-A2021 with 5% abamectin·etoxazole ME (5A·E) and Yimanchu achieved 97.4% efficacy at 25 DAA. Among UASSs, T20 showed the rapid control, while E-A2021 outperformed JX25 and T1000 due to finer droplets effectively targeting P. citri. In residual control (14–25 DAA), JX25 with 45% bifenazate·etoxazole SC (45B·E) was most effective, followed by T20. 5A·E and 45B·E showed better residual efficacy than abamectin-based formulations, which declined more rapidly. Adjuvants significantly extended control duration, with Yimanchu performing best. This study demonstrates that with optimized spraying parameters, nozzle types, and adjuvants, UASSs can match or surpass ground spraying in P. citri control in hilly citrus orchards, providing valuable guidance for precision pesticide application in complex terrain. The aim of this study is to precisely elucidate the control efficacy of drip irrigation herbicide application against broadleaf weeds and comprehensively assess its safety to cotton. Broadleaf weeds were managed through the application of herbicide in the cotton field. The herbicide was dispensed from a fertilizer tank in tandem with water droplets. A field investigation was conducted via a fixed-point investigation method to assess the herbicide residue levels and the safety of the cotton crop from 2022 to 2023. When 100.8 g a.i./hm2 of 48% Flumioxazin SC was applied via drip irrigation, it had no adverse effect on cotton safety at the mature stage. During the fruit-setting stage, it exhibited a significant weeding effect on annual broadleaf weeds such as Solanum nigrum L. and Chenopodium album L. Analysis revealed no pesticide residues in cotton and cottonseeds. Soil pesticide residues were found to be at a low level. The cotton yield reached 5618.1 kg/hm2, and the cotton quality met the national standard requirements. For the control of broadleaf weeds in cotton fields, the application of 100.8 g a.i./hm2 of 48% Flumioxazin SC via drip irrigation can effectively control broadleaf weeds. This method can suppress annual broadleaf weeds, with S. nigrum and C. album being the dominant weed communities, without compromising the safety and quality of cotton. Although drip irrigation technology offers advantages such as time savings and reduced labor demands, it is essential to adopt appropriate weed control techniques tailored to the specific conditions of different cotton fields. Changes in the flight attitude of plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can lead to oscillations in the liquid level of their medicine tanks, which may affect operational accuracy and stability, and could even pose a threat to flight safety. To address this issue, this article presents the design of a flight attitude simulator for crop protection UAVs, constructed on a six-degree-of-freedom motion platform. This simulator can replicate the various flight attitudes, such as emergency stops, turns, and point rotations, of plant protection UAVs. This article initially outlines the determination and design process for the structural parameters and 3D model of the flight attitude simulator specific to plant protection UAVs. Subsequently, simulations were performed to analyze liquid sloshing in the pesticide tank under various liquid flushing ratios during flight conditions, including emergency stops, climbs, and circling maneuvers. Finally, the influence of liquid sloshing on the flight stability of the plant protection UAVs in different attitudes and with varying liquid flushing ratios is presented. These results serve as a cornerstone for optimizing the flight parameters of plant protection UAVs, analyzing the characteristics of pesticide application, and designing effective pesticide containers. Considerable losses are inflicted by plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) due to their obligate parasitism; serious damage occurs in many susceptible crops, and the parasites have a broad distribution worldwide. As most PPNs have a subterranean nature, the complexity of soils in the plant rhizosphere and the structures and functions of the soil food webs necessitate a grasp of the relevant biotic/abiotic factors in order to ensure their effective control. Such factors frequently lead to the inconsistent performance and untapped activity of applied bionematicides, hindering efforts to develop reliable ones. Research efforts that take these factors into account to back the usage of these bionematicides by combining the disease-suppressive activities of two or more agricultural inputs are highlighted herein. These combinations should be designed to boost useful colonization in the rhizosphere, persistent expression of desirable traits under a wide range of soil settings, and/or antagonism to a larger number of plant pests/pathogens relative to individual applications. Relevant ecological/biological bases with specific settings for effective PPN management are exemplified. Determining the relative sensitivity or incompatibility of some biologicals entails studying their combinations and reactions. Such studies, as suggested herein, should be conducted on a case-by-case basis to avoid unsatisfactory outputs. These studies will enable us to accurately define certain outputs, namely, the synergistic, additive, neutral, and antagonistic interactions among the inputs. In optimizing the efficiencies of these inputs, researchers should consider their multi-functionality and metabolic complementarity. Despite previous research, the market currently lacks these types of safe and effective products. Hence, further explorations of novel integrated pest management plans that boost synergy and coverage to control multiple pathogens/pests on a single crop are required. Also, setting economic incentives and utilizing a standardized regulation that examines the authentic risks of biopesticides are still called for in order to ease cost-effective formulation, registration, farmer awareness, and usage worldwide. On the other hand, tank mixing that ensures legality and avoids physical and chemical agro-input-based incompatibilities can also provide superior merits. The end in view is the unraveling of the complexities of interactions engaged with in applying multiple inputs to develop soundly formulated, safe, and effective pesticides. Sophisticated techniques should be incorporated to overcome such complexities/limitations. These techniques would engage microencapsulation, nanopesticides, volatile organic compounds as signals for soil inhabitants, bioinformatics, and RNA-Seq in pesticide development. Full article

This study aims to establish the pest management approach for pests of stored maize and determine the current control practices. Semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 77 smallholder farmers from 16 villages at King Sabata Dalindyebo local municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The results revealed that about 50% of the farmers had a formal education, the average farm size was 1 hectare, and they were predominantly cultivating yellow maize. Most farmers (57%) cultivated maize for human consumption, income generation, and livestock feeding. The results also showed that metal tanks tended to be the most preferred (81.82%) storage facility for storing maize. Furthermore, the study found that Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) were the major storage insect pests of maize. The storage pests were managed using synthetic pesticides (84.42%), namely aluminium phosphide. This pesticide is a solid formulation for generating gas phosphine for fumigation. The continued indiscriminate use of this pesticide in protecting stored maize in this region could be a health hazard to humans and may result in the development of pest resistance. Full article

In the last decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for plant protection have rapidly developed worldwide as a new method for pesticide application, especially in China and other Asian countries. To improve the deposition quality in UAV applications, adding appropriate types of spray adjuvants into pesticide solutions is one of the most effective ways to facilitate droplet deposition and control efficacy. At present, research on spray adjuvants for UAVs are mainly based on droplet drift and laboratory tests. Few studies have been conducted on the physicochemical properties of spray adjuvants and the effects of droplet deposition characteristics. To explore the properties of four different kinds of spray adjuvants (Mai Fei, Bei Datong, G-2801, and Agrospred 910) and the deposition characteristics of spray adjuvants on litchi leaves, an automatic surface tension meter, a contact angle measuring device, an ultraviolet visible spectrophotometer, and a DJI AGRAS T30 plant protection UAV was used to measure the surface tension, contact angle, and droplet deposition characteristics on litchi under UAV spraying operations. The results showed that the addition of spray adjuvants could significantly reduce the surface tension of the solution. The surface tension value of the solution after adding the spray additives was reduced by 53.1–68.9% compared with the control solution. Among them, the Agrospred 910 spray adjuvant had the best effect on reducing the surface tension of the solution. The contact angle of the control solution on the litchi leaves varied from 80.15° to 72.76°. With the increase in time, the contact angle of the spray adjuvant solution gradually decreased, the Agrospred 910 spray adjuvant had the best effect, and the contact angle decreased from 40.44° to 20.23° after the droplets fell on the litchi leaves for 60 s. The adjuvant solutions increased the droplet size, but the uniformity of the droplet size decreased. The Dv0.5 of different spray solutions ranged from 97.3 to 117.8 μm, which belonged to the fine or very fine droplets, and the Dv0.5 of adjuvants solutions were significantly greater than that of the control solution. The RSs of adjuvant solutions were very similar and ranged from 0.92 to 0.96, all of which were significantly greater than the result of the control solution (0.57). Compared with the deposition of the control solution, the Mai Fei, Bei Datong, and G-2801 solutions clearly increased spray deposition, with total depositions of 0.776, 0.705, and 0.721 μL/cm2, which are all greater than the total deposition of the control solution of 0.645 μL/cm2. The addition of tank-mixed adjuvants could effectively increase the uniformity of the spray deposition, and all the average CVs of adjuvant solutions were lower than 96.86%. On the whole, Mai Fei performed best in increasing the spray deposition and promoting penetration, followed by Bei Datong and G-2801. Meanwhile, the test can also provide a reference for improving the utilization rate of UAV pesticide applications. Full article

This work focuses on the use of load sensors to help with spraying tasks using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The study details the construction of a prototype for load measurement to validate the proof of concept. To simulate the application of agricultural pesticides, the UAV follows a predefined route and an image processing system detects the presence of diseased plants. After detection, the UAV pauses its route momentarily and activates the spraying device. The payload sensor monitors the fertilizer application process, which determines whether the amount of pesticide has been fully applied. If the storage tank is empty or the remaining quantity is insufficient for another operation, the system will command the UAV to return to the base station for refueling. Experimental validations were carried out in an indoor controlled environment to verify the proposal and the functionality of the in-flight payload monitoring system. Additionally, the UAV’s flight controller demonstrated robust performance, maintaining stability despite the challenges posed by liquid-load oscillations and varying payloads during the spraying process. In summary, our main contribution is a real-time payload monitoring system that monitors weight during flight to avoid over- or under-spraying. In addition, this system supports automatic refueling, detecting low levels of pesticides and directing the UAV to return to base when necessary. Full article

Secondary growth in garlic depreciates its visual aspect and thereby renders the crop unviable for trade. Therefore, farmers commonly reduce fertilization and impose drought and oxidative stress caused by high-dose pesticides to reduce secondary growth in garlic plants. However, these procedures can be considered adverse, unhealthy, and environmentally inappropriate. To remedy this scenario, we investigated whether spraying growth inhibitors would prevent secondary growth in garlic plants. First, we evaluated the effects of abscisic acid, trinexapac-ethyl, chlormequat chloride, and paclobutrazol treatments on garlic plants grown in polyethylene tanks (250 m3). We then analyzed the effects of deficit irrigation combined with the application of trinexapac-ethyl (sprayed two or three times) and the application of trinexapac-ethyl, chlormequat chloride, or paclobutrazol alone (each sprayed two or three times) on garlic plants grown in the field, comparing them with the effects of deficit irrigation (control treatment) alone. The in-field experiment was replicated with the following treatments: control (deficit irrigation) and trinexapac-ethyl (sprayed two or three times) treatments. We analyzed the physiological, biometric, and production parameters affecting secondary growth in garlic plants. We observed that trinexapac-ethyl could efficiently regulate secondary growth without causing physiological disturbances in garlic plants. Our results provide valuable information that will contribute to the development of a sustainable technique to replace the current practices used by farmers to prevent secondary growth in garlic plants. Rotor Speed Prediction Model of Multi-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Spraying System and Its Matching with the Overall Load

During continuous spraying operations, the liquid in the pesticide tank gradually decreases, and the flight speed changes as the route is altered. To maintain stable flight, the rotor speed of a multi-rotor unmanned aerial spraying system (UASS) constantly adjusts. To explore the variation law of rotor speed in a multi-rotor UASS under objective operation attributes, based on indoor and outdoor experimental data, this paper constructs a mathematical model of the relationship between rotor speed and thrust. The model fitting parameter (R2) is equal to 0.9996. Through the neural network, the rotor speed prediction model is constructed with the real-time flight speed and the payload of the pesticide tank as the input. The overall correlation coefficient (R2) of the model training set is 0.728, and the correlation coefficients (R2) of the verification set and the test set are 0.719 and 0.726, respectively. Finally, the rotor speed is matched with the load of the whole UASS through thrust conversion. It is known that the single-axis load capacity under full-load state only reaches about 50% of its maximum load capacity, and the load increase is more than 75.83% compared with the no-load state. This study provides a theoretical and methodological reference for accurately predicting the performance characterization results of a power system during actual operation and investigating the dynamic feedback mechanism of a UASS during continuous operation. In an agricultural system, finding suitable watering, pesticides, and soil content to provide the right nutrients for the right plant remains challenging. Plants cannot speak and cannot ask for the food they require. These problems can be addressed by applying intelligent (fuzzy logic) controllers to IoT devices in order to enhance communication between crops, ground mobile robots, aerial robots, and the entire farm system. The application of fuzzy logic in agriculture is a promising technology that can be used to optimize crop yields and reduce water usage. It was developed based on language and the air properties in agricultural fields. The entire system was simulated in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment with Cisco Packet Tracer integration. The inputs for the system were soil moisture sensors, temperature sensors, and humidity sensors, and the outputs were pump flow, valve opening, water level, and moisture in the sounding. The obtained results were the output of the valve opening, moisture in the sounding, pump flow rate, outflow, water level, and ADH values, which are 10.00000013 rad/s, 34.72%, 4.494%, 0.025 m3/s, 73.31 cm3, and 750 values, respectively. The outflow rate increase indicates that water is being released from the tanks, and the control signal fluctuates, indicating that the valve is opening. Full article

Thrips have become some of the most challenging pests to control in mango production due to their short developmental time, hidden locations and resistance to pesticides, in the tropical regions of China. To improve pesticides efficacy, the tank-mix adjuvants Qi Gong (QG) and the thrips attractant Lv Dian (LD) were added when using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to control thrips. The surface tension, contact angle on mango leaves, droplet size, spreading rate, and drying time of the two tank-mix adjuvants were determined. The effects of the two tank-mix adjuvants using a UAV sprayer on the droplet coverage and control efficacy against thrips on mango inflorescences were tested through field trials. The results showed that both QG and LD could reduce the surface tension of the liquid and the contact angle on mango leaves and could increase the spreading performance. The droplet coverage in the upper layer of the canopy was about 2% higher than that in the lower layer, and the coverage at the top of the panicle was 5% higher than that at the bottom. QG improved the deposition coverage of mango inflorescences by about 31.5%. The addition of QG increased the efficacy by 18.24% and 8.03%, respectively, at florescence and the young fruit stage. The addition of the LD increased the efficacy by 24.56% and 14.38%, respectively, at florescence and the young fruit stage. These test results can provide a scientific basis for the control of mango thrips with UAVs. Full article

Adjuvants are supplemental substances added to pesticide tank mixtures to enhance their efficacy by altering the dispersing, emulsifying, spreading, sticking, and wetting properties of the spray mixture. The goals of this study were an assessment of the effectiveness of pyraclostrobin and boscalid against garlic rust; the fungicide’s dissipation and translocation within plant tissue in the presence of commercial adjuvants Dash® HC EC; and the validation of an analytical method for concurrently determining boscalid and pyraclostrobin in green garlic and garlic bulbs. Pyraclostrobin and boscalid retention in green garlic and the dietary exposure risks were also evaluated. The adjuvant Dash® HC EC is an emulsifiable concentrate containing fatty acids, methyl esters, and alkoxylated alcohol–phosphate esters. The test plots were sprayed with the maximum recommended dosage of 400.5 g a.i. ha−1 boscalid and 100.5 g a.i. ha−1 pyraclostrobin. The residues of pyraclostrobin and boscalid in garlic bulb and green garlic samples were determined using a mini-Luke multi-residue solvent extraction method paired with a high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detector (HPLC–DAD). This method is based on the extraction of a homogeneous sample with acetone, petroleum ether, and dichloromethane. Boscalid and pyraclostrobin recoveries in green garlic and garlic bulbs ranged from 71% to 107% on average, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 6.8% to 18.1%, and limits of quantification were 0.02 mg/kg. In green garlic and garlic bulbs, boscalid residues ranged from 0.14 to 3.51 mg/kg and pyraclostrobin from lower than LOQ to 1.43 mg/kg, during the experiment. The adjuvant increased the fungicidal efficacy of the fungicides and their retention on green garlic. Although boscalid is considered a nonsystemic fungicide, it showed higher translocation from garlic leaves to garlic bulbs than pyraclostrobin. Regarding the dietary risk assessment, the use of the adjuvant in a tank mixture with boscalid and pyraclostrobin is considered safe 14 days after application, which agrees with the recommended PHI. A multi-duct orchard sprayer is designed in this paper to address the problem of low droplet coverage during plant protection in walnut orchards in South Xinjiang, China. This spray comprises a base frame, a pesticide tank, an air delivery system, a copying base frame and a drive system. Effects of the sprayer structure on the flow field were simulated using computational fluid dynamics. Operation parameters were optimised using the response surface analysis and validated using a field test. The results demonstrated that five jet tubes in the simulation design could fulfil the design requirements of GB/T 32250.3-2022. The upper, middle and lower droplet coverages were 74.92%, 90.01% and 69.9%, respectively, when the sprayer’s advancing speed, the angle of jet tubes and the nozzle diameter were 0.53 m/s, 70.27° and 0.81 mm, respectively. The machine can effectively enhance the spraying efficiency and droplet coverage of each canopy during plant protection operations in the new walnut orchards of South Xinjiang, China, and provide references for designing and optimising fruit tree spraying machinery.
