Psychosocial Aspects of Injuries Among Professional Folk Dancers

Injury or fear of injury can cause stress for everyone. This is especially true for dancers, whose careers can be ruined by a serious injury. Stress or various psychological problems can play a role in the development of injury. Our research aims to explore the psychosocial patterns associated with injuries among Hungarian professional folk dancers. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 96 professional dancers (47.9% male, 52.1% female, mean age 29.9 years). Data was collected through an online questionnaire survey. Among psychological factors, perceived stress (using the Perceived Stress Scale), burnout (using the Athletic Burnout Questionnaire), coping skills (using the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory), relationship with the leader (using the Coaching Behaviour Questionnaire) and perceived social support (using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) were examined among injured and non-injured dancers. The two groups were compared along psychological subscales using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) followed by a post hoc ANOVA and Mann–Whitney test regarding social support. Our results showed a significant correlation between psychosocial factors and injuries sustained during the study period. Positive correlation was found between injuries and perceived stress (p < 0.001) and burnout (reduced sense of accomplishment p = 0.021; dance devaluation p < 0.001). Factors reflecting dancer’s behavior and coping skills also correlated with injuries, such as a decrease in coachability (p = 0.007), less concern (p = 0.029), and negative reactions to the leader’s behavior (p = 0.019). In addition, perceived social support from family also negatively correlates with injury (p = 0.019). Our findings suggest a multidirectional relationship between physical injuries and the mental state of dancers. Further investigation of the causal relationships is recommended, with the aim of using psychosocial support tools during the prevention and treatment of injuries by the professionals dealing with dance artists. It is also recommended to investigate whether individual psychological factors are directly related to injuries or interact with each other. It would also be useful to introduce prevention programs that help dancers manage their emotions related to injuries. Full article

In healthcare, there is growing awareness of the potential harm that disciplinary processes can have on employees, service delivery, and organizational culture. However, little attention has been given to the impact on those responsible for conducting these investigations. This study examines investigator harm through a cross-sectional survey, simultaneously collecting qualitative and quantitative data from 71 participants across 10 NHS Wales organizations. The findings indicate that investigators experience harm when conducting employee investigations. While those with more experience perceive themselves as better prepared to follow the formal steps of the disciplinary policy and process, their ability to prevent harm to themselves or others remains unchanged. Additionally, more experienced investigators are not more aware of their organization’s well-being priorities or strategies for mitigating harm. These findings highlight the need for greater support for investigators, including coaching and post-investigation debriefing. Training should raise awareness of the impact of employee investigations on all stakeholders and the importance of applying disciplinary policy and processes empathically. Finally, policies and processes should acknowledge the harm they may cause and explicitly provide strategies for harm reduction, such as treating formal investigations as a measure of ‘last resort’. Collegiate sports serve as a powerful platform for advancing youth development and social engagement, contributing not only to athletic growth but also to personal development, teamwork, and social justice among student-athletes. This study explores the relationships among procedural justice, coach trust, perceived organizational support (POS), and team commitment in collegiate athletes. A self-reported questionnaire administered to college athletes collected 285 usable responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings reveal that higher perceptions of procedural justice are significantly associated with greater team commitment, increased coach trust, and higher POS. Additionally, coach trust positively influences both team commitment and POS. However, no significant relationship was found between POS and team commitment, indicating that POS alone may not be a direct predictor of athlete commitment without the presence of mediating factors. These findings highlight the pivotal role of procedural justice, coach trust, and POS in shaping team commitment among collegiate athletes, underscoring the importance of fair decision-making and relational trust in fostering youth development and reflecting the broader influence of behavioral and social dynamics in collegiate sport settings. Parental and peer support has been documented as an important factor in physical activities among high school students. Likewise, coach support has an important impact on physical activity among high school students. Meanwhile, many studies show that basic psychological needs have an essential effect on perceived autonomy and physical activity. As such, this study, using self-determination theory, aimed to explore the mediating role of basic psychological needs on physical activity among high school students in China. The Sport Climate Questionnaire, Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise Scale—Physical Activity, and the three-item Physical Activity Rating Scale-3 were employed to gauge responses from 736 high school students (15–18 years old). A structural equation model was employed to test the mediating effect. The researchers found a significant positive effect of perceived coach support on basic psychological need satisfaction. Basic psychological need satisfaction was also found to be a significant predictor of physical activity. Surprisingly, the results showed that perceived coach support negatively influences physical activity. As such, an indirect mediating effect is established. Basic psychological needs had an indirect mediating effect and could reduce the negative effect of coach support on physical activity engagement. Full article

The present pilot randomized control study examined the effectiveness of an 8-week stress management and health coaching intervention on perceived stress, healthy routines, sleep quality, self-efficacy, self-esteem and happiness. A total of 38 office employees were randomly assigned to the intervention group (IG, n = 20) or the control group (CG, n = 18) and validated tools were used to assess outcomes. Statistically significant differences in the IG after the 8 weeks were observed in perceived stress (i.e., a decrease in PSS-14 score, p = 0.043), in “Daily Routine”, i.e., an increase in control over the consistent timing of meals and sleep (p = 0.001) and in “Social and Mental Balance”, i.e., an increase in inclination to socialize, balance leisure and personal time and adopt positive thinking or cognitive control over stressors (p = 0.003). These improvements were reflected in an increase in total healthy lifestyle and personal control score (HLPCQ, p = 0.048). Short time and stress management and coaching interventions at workplaces can empower employees to increase control over stressors and to take the first step in adopting healthy behaviors by recognizing bad habits. Furthermore, in building sustainable employment, an empowered employee would participate at an organizational level more actively. Our preliminary results strongly support the idea that primary health care professionals should be educated in health coaching and relaxation techniques. Full article

(1) Background: Inadequate physical activity is an ongoing issue for pediatric survivors of childhood cancer and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), increasing their risk for chronic health conditions and decreasing quality of life. Team Survivors is a 12-week program in which survivors train as a group to participate in a community triathlon. Preliminary findings from a quality improvement project of Team Survivors were used to assess its feasibility in influencing survivors’ physical activity and quality of life and their family’s perception of the program. (2) Methods: Repeated measures t-tests evaluated changes in caregiver-reported exercise self-efficacy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). These findings were supplemented by a narrative review of qualitative data from caregivers and survivors on their overall experience and satisfaction with the program. (3) Results: All participants successfully completed the triathlon, and families reported satisfaction with the program’s logistics (i.e., coordination, coaching, and practice). Neither caregiver-reported exercise self-efficacy nor HRQoL significantly differed between pre- and post-intervention, but notable improvements were reported in all domains of HRQoL. Qualitatively, the perceived benefits reported by caregivers and survivors were multifaceted. Physical benefits included improvements in survivors’ physical activity level and endurance. Psychosocially, caregivers and survivors reported greater confidence and motivation for physical activity, improved coping, and increased social engagement and feelings of normalcy. (4) Conclusions: Mixed method results support the feasibility of Team Survivors in positively impacting survivors’ ability to engage in physical activity. The multifaceted structure of the program may more broadly impact psychosocial functioning in addition to physical activity. Future studies require a larger sample size to adequately power the analyses. Full article

The need for effective and efficient special education teacher training in evidence-based instructional procedures persists. In this study, behavioral skills training (BST) and coaching were used to train and support a preservice special education teacher to implement empirically supported procedures (ESPs) in the classroom. A multiple baseline across skills design was used to evaluate effects across experimental conditions. The participant identified perceived issues needing intervention; the experimenter selected ESPs with contextual fit for implementation. Intervention was phased as needed in three conditions: task analysis, BST, and coaching. Results demonstrated that task analysis alone was not effective in producing sufficient implementation fidelity, but the addition of BST brought implementation fidelity rates of 88% or higher. Coaching effectively achieved implementation rates of 90% or higher for all ESPs. Furthermore, the participant reported high levels of satisfaction with the ESPs and the training and coaching procedures used to train her to implement them. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed. Full article

This systematic review examines the effects of professional learning (PL) experiences on in-service teachers’ self-perceived growth. The study compares formal and informal PL models, drawing on diverse approaches, such as coaching, mentorship, collaborative learning, and reflective practices, to understand how these frameworks impact teachers’ professional efficacy and instructional practices. Using databases like Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC we analyzed 38 empirical studies, focusing on the teachers’ PL experiences and the resulting self-perceived professional growth across its various domains. The findings indicate that while formal PD sessions (e.g., structured workshops and seminars) support skill development, they often yield mixed results due to their limited adaptability to specific contextual needs. In contrast, informal PL approaches, like mentorship and peer collaboration, foster reflective and practical growth. Combining both PL methods provides the most comprehensive benefits, blending structured learning with the flexibility of informal settings. This review underscores the need for hybrid PL models that address collective and individualized growth pathways, recommending future research into context-sensitive, mixed PL designs to effectively support in-service teachers. In the Spring of 2020, Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) was officially declared a global pandemic, which prompted an unprecedented number of changes to societal functioning. Amongst those who experienced significant life alterations were collegiate athletes within the United States (US). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between US athletes’ perceptions of their team motivational climate, perceived support from coaches and teammates, and their optimistic thoughts during the COVID-19 pandemic. US collegiate athletes (N = 756; 56.3% female; Mage = 20.07 years, SDage = 1.57 years) across a variety of levels (e.g., Division I) and sports (e.g., basketball) were invited to participate in this study. Structural equation modeling analyses revealed significant positive associations between a caring and task-involving climate, athletes’ feeling supported by their coaches and teammates, and athletes’ optimistic thoughts during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, an ego-involving climate was significantly negatively associated with athletes’ feeling supported by their coaches and teammates. The final results suggest that the supportive actions of coaches and teammates during difficult times can mediate the positive connection between perceptions of a caring-task-involving climate on athletic teams and an athlete’s ability to stay optimistic during difficult life stressors. Introduction: Stress is a common concern among healthcare students, due to the demands of their coursework and the elevated expectations they face. Especially among dentistry and nursing students, the phenomenon, although well-documented, covers psychosocial and physiological dimensions, with somatization symptoms being less explored. These manifestations are crucial to identify discipline-specific stressors and health impacts that can lead to targeted interventions for both disciplines. Aim: This study investigates stress perceptions, somatization, and coping strategies among 271 nursing and dentistry students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Methodology: An e-questionnaire was open for submissions during February and March 2024. Results: Females reported higher stress somatization (M = 10.22, SD = 5.23) than males (M = 7.94, SD = 6.14; Cohen’s d = 0.412, p < 0.05). The interpretation of stress as “restlessness and psychological pressure” was more prevalent in dentistry students compared to nursing students. Moreover, nursing students who perceived stress as the “inability to manage unexpected or difficult situations, insecurity, panic” were more likely to experience stress somatization symptoms, while for dentistry students, stress somatization was related to “pressure to meet daily obligations/long-term goals”. Physical symptoms for all students included chest discomfort, digestive issues, and headaches/nausea. Also, dentistry students reported more teeth clenching or grinding than nursing students. Short-term coping strategies included emotional balance, managing stressors, situation analysis, and breathing techniques. Long-term strategies involved distraction and entertainment, physical exercise, and patience. A higher willingness to seek coaching support correlated with higher stress somatization among dental students. Nursing students favored psychological support, while dentistry students suggested curriculum revision and improved infrastructure. Discussion/Conclusions: Females exhibited higher stress somatization levels, with themes of insecurity and physical symptoms. Nursing students reported higher somatization linked to insecurity, while dental students associated stress with daily obligations and goals. The study highlights the need for improved support systems, flexible academic procedures, and better communication to address stress in healthcare academia. Full article

‘Every One of You Is a Leader’: Investigating the Experience of Being a Brown British Muslim Woman in Professional Contexts

The Hadith paraphrased as ‘every one of you is a leader’ does not discriminate in gender in any way—both men and women are leaders. What does this mean in practice, and how are Muslim women perceived and received in line with this Hadith? Only in very recent years are Muslim women in Britain starting to occupy prominent positions: 13 Muslim women Members of British Parliament were elected in 2024; celebrities such as baker Nadia Hussain are regularly seen on British TV; and others such as Fatima Manji in the media. In this article, I explore how different ‘contextual intersectionalities’ influence and impact a Muslim woman and her leadership role. How does the intersectionality of her outward expression of faith identify her? How does a Muslim woman navigate a space where she is the leader and her skills are sought, yet her faith representation may instigate unconscious/conscious biases? Using an autoethnographic method, I investigate the impact of my identities as a Brown British Muslim woman in three distinct settings. First, in the professional and academic space of British Christian practical theology, where I was the first British Muslim to obtain a doctorate in the subject and was the first Muslim Trustee and Committee Member of the British and Irish Association for Practical Theology (BIAPT) between 2020 and 2024. Second, as a leadership advisor and executive coach to FTSE-listed companies, where I support C-suite leaders to generate sustained change in individuals, teams, and systems. And third, as a tutor and supervisor of proven business leaders to master the skills of coaching in their own right. I discuss how I am met in these spaces and the impact of that on my being. In conclusion, I call for increased understanding and awareness of the emotional tax paid by Muslim women who choose to take leadership roles. Full article

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived mother- and father-initiated motivational climates and players’ fear of failure in youth male team sports. A sample of 336 youth male players from five team sports (basketball, football, handball, volleyball, and water polo) completed the Parent-Initiated Motivational Climate Questionnaire-2 and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory. The results showed that perceived mother- and father-initiated motivational climates were related to fear of failure predispositions. While a mastery orientation (perceived learning-enjoyment climate) had a low association with fear of failure, an ego orientation (perceived worry-conducive and success-without-effort climates) was highly related to fear of failure. Father-initiated climates had stronger associations with fear of failure than mother-initiated ones, revealing that mothers and fathers may have different influences when considering the developmental origins of fear of failure. The relationships between mother- and father-initiated motivational climates and fear of failure varied according to the type of sport, with basketball, football, and volleyball presenting stronger associations. The dimensions “Fear of important others losing interest” and “Fear of upsetting important others” presented the highest explained variance in all sports when predicted by the father-initiated motivational climate. The findings can inform important evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for parents, coaches, and organizations, enabling them to create supportive environments that aid athletes in developing the necessary psychological skills for long-term success and well-being. This article elaborates on the multiple approaches to develop and support school leadership. In a 5-year quasi-experimental longitudinal mixed-methods study based on a sample of 122 schools in three regions in a German state, 75 school leaders and their teams participated in a 3-year program using multiple approaches; the rest served as the control group. The multiple approaches covered the school leaders’ (a) professional development, comprising (i) a professional development program, (ii) individual coaching series, and (b) support for them, including (iii) school consultancy and (iv) additional financial resources. The quality of the interventions (regarding both the process and didactic qualities, as well as outcome qualities) and how the quality of both the school leadership and the schools changes over time as a consequence of these interventions are analyzed. The study’s results show a highly positive assessment of the quality and advantages of the multiple approaches and their benefits for the quality of school leadership and further aspects of the school. The regression analyses demonstrate that positively perceived outcome qualities of the interventions are associated with improvements in numerous dimensions of school quality. Full article

Workplaces cause employees to adopt sedentary behaviors for most of their daytime, negatively impacting psychophysical health. A new office concept (UP150) was designed to reduce sedentary behaviors at work through architectural changes, proactive technologies, and wellness coaches (education to active lifestyles). The present study examined the effects of the UP150 concept, previously investigated in dedicated workspaces, with a 12-month longitudinal trial in a real worksite environment. Forty-eight desk workers comprised the experimental (EG) and control (CG) groups. All participants worked in the same working environment, having the UP150 features inserted in a usual working environment, but the CG was not allowed to interact with the UP150 specifics. During the experimental year, physical (physical activity, motor efficiency, and anthropometric features), clinical (metabolic parameters and cognitive-capacity-related parameters), and psychological (well-being and discomfort, job social and psychological perceptions, and perceived workload) features were assessed. The prolonged application of the UP150 procedure in a mixed working context for involvement in corporate policies positively affected EG workers’ physical (physical activity and motor efficiency increased, and body fat unchanged), clinical (blood glucose, insulin, and total cholesterol decreased; HDL increased), and psychological (well-being and social support raised; job demand and perceived workload lowered) parameters, confirming the previous studies. Leading Online Professional Development for Instructional Technology Coaches with Effective Design Elements

This single-case study focused on the impact of design elements in online professional development for Instructional Technology Coaches to develop their TPACK. In this study, 30 participants enrolled in an online professional development series of synchronous and asynchronous sessions called Pathways. Ten design elements were implemented including content-focused, active learning, collaboration, modeling, coaching support, feedback, sustained duration and time, reflection, resources, and utilization of technology. Qualitative data were collected from 28 participants’ feedback forms, interviews, and asynchronous assignments. The results showed that all ten design elements were perceived to be beneficial to Instructional Technology Coaches’ learning. However, at the same time, some participants found a few hindrances to their learning from certain aspects of the six design elements. Hindrances in Pathways’ design elements include ineffective modeling, collaboration challenges, off-topic discussions, unfamiliarity with Teams, technical difficulties, insufficient time, and home distractions. These findings emphasize the need for effective collaboration, time allocation, and technical proficiency. The coaches developed their TPACK through Pathways as discovered by the rubric results of the asynchronous assignments. Directions for future research and recommendations for professional development are discussed. Full article
