This study examines the diversity of terminologies associated with assistive technology (AT), a crucial field that promotes autonomy and inclusion for people with disabilities. Although the wide use of assistive technology is observed in the literature, a variety of terms are often used interchangeably, which hinders research, technological development, and the formulation of public policies. In this sense, this systematic review aimed to identify, categorise, and analyse the diversity of terms used to describe AT in the scientific literature, contributing to greater conceptual clarity and supporting structured and interdisciplinary development in the field. A comprehensive search was conducted in July 2024 across the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, covering publications from 1989 to 2024. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed journal articles in English that conceptually defined at least one AT-related term. The selection process followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and included studies from Q1 and Q2 journals to ensure academic rigour. A total of 117 studies were included out of 11,941 initial records. Sixteen distinct terms were identified and grouped into five clusters based on semantic and functional similarities: Cluster 1—Technologies for assistance and inclusion. Cluster 2—Functional assistive devices. Cluster 3—Assistive interaction interfaces. Cluster 4—Assistive environmental technologies. Cluster 5—Assistive systems. A complementary meta-analysis revealed geographic and temporal trends, indicating that terms such as “assistive technology” and “assistive device” are globally dominant. In contrast, others, like “enabling technology,” are more context-specific and emerging. The findings contribute theoretically by providing a structured framework for understanding AT terminology and practically by supporting the design of public policy and interdisciplinary communication. (1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in Oman, necessitating targeted healthcare planning and patient support. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on MS management and disease course, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19, psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic, and demographic and clinical predictors of the effects related to COVID-19 among Omani PwMS. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021. Adult (18–60 years) Omani PwMS completed a structured interview along with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and World Health Organization Well-being Index (WHO-5). Clinical data on relapses and disease-modifying therapies and adherence were analyzed. The data was statistically analyzed. (3) Results: Of 104 PwMS (73.1% female), 22.1% contracted COVID-19, with fatigue being the most reported symptom (87%). Female sex (p = 0.042), younger age (18–34 vs. 35–45 years; p = 0.014), diagnosis of COVID-19 (p = 0.037), and low current mental well-being scores (p = 0.021) predicted greater COVID-19-related effects. As people spend extended periods of time indoors, stress and negative emotions caused by work have become increasingly difficult to ignore. Observing window views is widely considered an effective method to alleviate stress and promote mental health. However, the specific visual elements within these views that contribute to stress reduction and the differential restorative benefits across varying compositions remain insufficiently understood. This study focuses on four major visual elements commonly seen through windows: sky, buildings, greenery, and roads. Using a horizontal layering approach, nine window views were created based on different proportions of these elements. Participants were exposed to these views, and their responses were evaluated through the positive and negative affect scale (PANAS), as well as electroencephalographic (EEG) data acquisition. The findings indicate that greenery exhibits the most pronounced positive effect on stress mitigation and the enhancement of positive affect, while the presence of roads is more likely to elicit negative emotional responses. Additionally, the visual richness and structural completeness of the window scenes are found to significantly impact restorative outcomes. These findings provide empirical insights for landscape and architectural design aimed at improving psychological well-being. Full article

Environmental protection is one of the key challenges facing mankind today. Finding out what young people, referred to as Generation Z, think about this issue is extremely important, as they will be the first to experience the negative effects of environmental degradation. Research has shown that Generation Z has the greatest hope for solutions from the technological sphere. Thus, the economic and political spheres should support the development of technology in this area. The social sphere is rated lowest, which may reflect young people’s personal withdrawal and the delegation of responsibility for the environment’s future to engineers, entrepreneurs, and politicians. It is equally important to learn what constitutes an environmental imperative for Generation Z. It is based on new energy sources, energy producers, and the state’s pursuit of a policy of international cooperation in this area, supported by national legislative activity toward entrepreneurs and citizens. Research has demonstrated the need to raise awareness among young people, with a focus on individuals treated as subjects in their interaction with modern technology. Full article

People with cystic fibrosis may experience polypharmacy, which can increase the risk of drug induced complications such as adverse events and drug–drug interactions. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of adverse events and to identify potential drug–drug interactions associated with elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI). Three databases, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration Database of Adverse Event Notification (TGA DAEN), the Canada Vigilance Adverse Reaction Online Database (CVAROD), and the USA Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) Database were searched for spontaneous ETI adverse events between 2019 and 2024. Descriptive analysis of the data was undertaken. The FAERS database was analysed to identify adverse events of interest such as anxiety and depression and concomitant drugs prescribed with ETI. A total of 10,628 ETI associated adverse events were identified in all system organ classes. The incidence of psychiatric adverse events ranged from 7 to 15% across the three databases. Potential drug–drug interactions with CYP 3A4/5 strong inhibitors and strong inducers were identified from the FAERS database and azole antifungals were implicated in several ETI dose modifications. The prevalence and types of ETI adverse events were varied and use of concomitant drugs with potential drug interactions was significant, requiring more research to manage them. Full article

In the southeast of China, seasonal rainfall intensity is high, the distribution of mountains and hills is extensive, and many small-scale, shallow landslides frequently occur after consecutive seasons of heavy rainfall. High-precision automated identification systems can quickly pinpoint the scope of the disaster and help with important decisions like evacuating people, managing engineering, and assessing damage. Many people have designed systems for detecting such shallow landslides, but few have designed systems that combine high resolution, high automation, and real-time capability of landslide identification. Taking accuracy, automation, and real-time capability into account, we designed an automatic rainfall-induced shallow landslide detection system based on deep learning and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images. The system uses UAVs to capture high-resolution imagery, the U-Net (a U-shaped convolutional neural network) to combine multi-scale features, an adaptive edge enhancement loss function to improve landslide boundary identification, and the development of the “UAV Cruise Geological Hazard AI Identification System” software with an automated processing chain. The system integrates UAV-specific preprocessing and achieves a processing speed of 30 s per square kilometer. It was validated in Wanli District, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. The results show a Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) of 90.7% and a Pixel Accuracy of 92.3%. Compared with traditional methods, the system significantly improves the accuracy of landslide detection. Full article

This study assesses the projected impacts of climate change on sediment retention and soil loss in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR, through the application of the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) model. Using climate projections under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios for the mid- and late-21st century (2050 and 2080), compared against a 2015 baseline, the analysis quantifies changes in sediment dynamics and ecosystem service provision. Results reveal a substantial increase in sediment retention, particularly in forested and flooded vegetation areas, under moderate and high-emission pathways. However, an overall rise in soil loss is observed across croplands and urbanized zones, driven by intensified high-risk areas, which requires conservative management. This study advocates for ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) strategies—including afforestation, intercropping, and riparian restoration—to enhance watershed resilience. These nature-based solutions align with national adaptation goals and offer co-benefits for biodiversity, climate regulation, and rural livelihoods. Full article

This study explores the use of chlorography as a natural photographic developing technique that utilizes the decomposition of chlorophyll and other plant pigments through the action of sunlight. The developed images corresponded to previous research on changes in the iconography of the indigenous Salasaka people. In this context, this experimental project on natural photography is oriented toward the conservation of the ancestral knowledge of this community and the understanding of the native flora of Ecuador. We investigated the application of the contact image transfer technique with positive transparencies on leaves and flowers of 30 different species that grow in the Ecuadorian highlands, including leaves of vascular plants, as well as rose petals. The results showed that the clarity and contrast of chlorography depended on the plant species and exposure time. It was observed that fruit-bearing species produced more visible images than the leaves of other plants and rose petals, with species from the Passifloraceae family proving particularly effective. We interpreted these findings within the framework of plant photophysical mechanisms, proposing an inverse relationship between development efficiency and species’ non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) capacity. Furthermore, we interpreted the findings in relation to the photobleaching of pigments and compared chlorography with other natural photographic processes such as anthotypes. Key factors influencing the process were identified, such as the type of leaf, the intensity and duration of light, and the hydration of the plant material. It is concluded that chlorography is a viable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly photographic alternative with potential applications in art, education, and research, although it presents challenges in terms of image permanence and reproducibility. As people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) live longer, kidney disease is emerging as a significant comorbidity that is increasingly linked to cardiovascular complications and progression to end-stage kidney disease. In our recent review, we proposed the unifying term CF-related kidney disease (CFKD) to encompass the spectrum of kidney dysfunction observed in this population. Early detection of kidney injury is critical for improving long-term outcomes, yet remains challenging due to the limited sensitivity of conventional laboratory tests, particularly in individuals with altered muscle mass and unique CF pathophysiology. Emerging approaches, including novel blood and urinary biomarkers, urinary extracellular vesicles, and genetic risk profiling, offer promising avenues for identifying subclinical kidney damage. When integrated with machine learning algorithms, these tools may enable the development of personalized risk stratification models and targeted therapeutic strategies. This precision medicine approach has the potential to transform kidney disease management in PwCF, shifting care from reactive treatment of late-stage disease to proactive monitoring and early intervention. Gender-neutral terms such as “sex work” and “sex worker” have gained prominence in academic, activist, and policy discourses. Unlike terms such as ‘prostitutes’ and ‘prostitution,’ these terms serve to reduce stigma and emphasize the labor involved in sex work. However, numerous studies suggest that these terms carry different meanings across cultural contexts, and their impact is experienced differently by various sub-groups of sex workers. Although originally coined by American activist Carol Leigh to unify sex workers across genders and sectors, these terms are, in some settings—including Kolkata, India—met with silence, coded language, or secrecy, particularly among transient sex workers, including cisgender and transgender women. As researchers with two decades of ethnographic research with 46 cisgender and 37 transgender women engaged in sex work in Kolkata and Eastern India, the authors argue that such silence and non-verbal forms of communication should not be interpreted merely as ignorance or disengagement but rather as strategic/willful acts of agency or resistance. These practices enable sex workers situated in different contexts to navigate unequal power dynamics within NGOs, manage respectability, mitigate structural violence, and foster communal identity. By examining how diverse groups of sex workers employ silence and secrecy, this study contributes to a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of the complexities surrounding the former’s lives and their agency. The study results indicate that it is essential for scholars, advocates and activists to employ strengths-based, context-specific language and research practices to be able to hear the stories of subaltern groups like commercial sex workers. It is also suggested that training of service providers and helping professionals focus on accepting and honoring the language people use to identify themselves in varied spaces and contexts. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a severe, debilitating, and pervasive sleep disorder. OSA mainly affects people with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and dyslipidemia and is strongly associated with cardiovascular complications. Based on the bidirectional relationship between T2DM and OSA, the latter represents a risk factor for the former, and, vice versa, people with T2DM have a high risk of OSA. Mechanical and hormonal factors, inflammatory mediators, and a dysregulated autonomic nervous system contribute to the mechanisms underlying the disease. Treatment of OSA is necessary even if the available remedies are not always effective. In addition to traditional treatments, including lifestyle adaptations and bariatric surgery, CPAP equipment, i.e., a breathing device ensuring continuous positive pressure to keep the airways open during sleep, represents the most common treatment tool. More recently, pharmacological research has paved the way to newer seemingly effective therapeutic strategies involving, in particular, two hypoglycemic agent classes, i.e., sodium–glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-is) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (GLP1-ras). Despite the increasing adoption of a syndemic approach in HIV research, few health communication campaigns have used a syndemic approach in messaging to improve health outcomes for persons living with HIV (PWH). This paper introduces a framework for practitioners and researchers developing health communication messages in support of a syndemic approach to HIV care for PWH in the United States. Grounded in insights from a review of counseling and psychosocial interventions that demonstrated significant positive effects on HIV clinical outcomes, the C4H Framework emphasizes four components: compassion, comprehensive messaging, capacity-building, and coordination. Compassion ensures that messages resonate with individuals experiencing the intertwined challenges of HIV, substance abuse, and mental health issues. Comprehensive messaging integrates a holistic view of the barriers faced by PWH. Capacity-building empowers individuals to effectively engage with and act upon health information. Coordination promotes alignment between stakeholders and resources to ensure consistent and supportive messaging. The C4H Framework bridges the gap between research and practice, offering a foundation for crafting effective communication messages that resonate with individuals facing the complex challenges inherent in HIV syndemics. Future research should explicitly test the effectiveness and acceptability of messages developed using the C4H Framework with people living with HIV. Full article

Synergistic Effect of Community Environment on Cognitive Function in Elderly People

With rapid global aging, the community environment has become a critical factor influencing cognitive health in older adults. However, most existing studies focus on single environmental attributes and rely on linear analytical methods, which fail to capture the complex and synergistic effects of community features. Guided by an integrated theoretical perspective on environmental psychology, aging, and cognitive health, this study examines how multiple community environmental factors jointly affect cognitive function in elderly people. A case study was conducted among 215 older residents in Shanghai, China. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified the following five key dimensions of community environment: pedestrian friendliness, blue–green spaces, infrastructure, space attractiveness, and safety. We then applied both Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to reveal linear and configurational relationships. The findings showed that pedestrian friendliness, blue–green spaces, and space attractiveness significantly enhance cognitive health, while fsQCA highlighted multiple pathways that underscore the non-linear and synergistic interactions among environmental features. These results provide theoretical insights into the mechanisms linking community environments and cognitive function and offer practical guidance for designing age-friendly communities. Full article

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a significant global health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide, particularly sexually active adolescents and young adults. These infections, caused by various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, can have profound implications for women’s reproductive health and fertility. This review explores the role of vaginal and uterine infections in women’s infertility, focusing on the most common pathogens and their impact on reproductive outcomes. Bacterial infections, such as those caused by intracellular bacteria (Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, and Chlamydia), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and bacterial vaginosis, are among the most prevalent causes of infertility in women. Studies have shown that these infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal occlusion, and endometrial damage, all of which can impair fertility. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in particular, is a significant cause of genital tuberculosis and infertility in high-incidence countries. Viral infections, such as Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV), can also affect women’s fertility. While the exact role of HPV in female infertility remains unclear, studies suggest that it may increase the risk of endometrial implantation issues and miscarriage. HSV may be associated with unexplained infertility. Parasitic infections, such as trichomoniasis and schistosomiasis, can directly impact the female reproductive system, leading to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and other complications. Fungal infections, such as candidiasis, are common but rarely have serious outcomes related to fertility. The vaginal microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining reproductive health, and alterations in the microbial balance can increase susceptibility to STIs and infertility. Probiotics have been proposed as a potential therapeutic strategy to restore the vaginal ecosystem and improve fertility outcomes, although further research is needed to establish their efficacy. In conclusion, vaginal and uterine infections contribute significantly to women’s infertility, with various pathogens affecting the reproductive system through different mechanisms. Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and preventive measures are essential to mitigate the impact of these infections on women’s reproductive health and fertility. Full article

Regionally, nationally, and globally, new churches are formed. This continues to divide the church due to traditions, theological, doctrinal matters, and denominational practices. In Africa—and Zimbabwe in particular—the formation of neo-Pentecostal denominations and prophetic movements exacerbates antagonism and division among Christians, posing a threat to the unity of the Body of Christ. Consequently, it is necessary to explore ways in which churches can find one another to promote unity among Christians, and this raises the need for local ecumenism. Christianity and the church are always found in specific cultural settings. Church life is guided by both its understanding of mission and the cultural context it operates. As churches need to be united, there is a need to explore ways in which the church can navigate its mission and cultural dynamics to promote unity. This article investigates the challenges and the missio-cultural factors that facilitate ecumenism among the Karanga people in Mberengwa, Zimbabwe. Mberengwa, a rural district in Zimbabwe, predominantly Karanga, presents a unique context where diverse Christian traditions coexist, often with varying degrees of tension and cooperation. This article examines the extent to which the complexity of ecumenism affects church cooperation in Mberengwa, Zimbabwe, and beyond, thereby exploring the cultural and missional factors that can promote church cooperation.
