Background/Objectives: Food allergy (FA) is a growing concern in pediatric care, requiring effective avoidance strategies and timely emergency responses. The role of caregivers is central to the daily management of FA. This study aimed to assess parental knowledge, preparedness, and behaviors regarding pediatric FA management, focusing on both prevention and emergency readiness. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 2024 to April 2025 through the SurveyMonkey® platform, promoted by the Italian Society of Pediatric Allergology and Immunology (SIAIP). The anonymous, structured questionnaire was distributed online and in two Italian university hospitals. A total of 129 fully completed responses from caregivers of children with FA were analyzed. The survey explored self-perceived knowledge, symptom recognition, preventive actions, emergency preparedness, and communication practices. Results: Only 9.3% of parents considered themselves “very informed,” while 54.3% reported limited or no knowledge. Just 16.0% recognized all symptoms of an allergic reaction, and only 24.0% could distinguish mild reactions from anaphylaxis. Notably, 67.4% reported not knowing how to respond to anaphylaxis, and 83.7% did not possess an epinephrine auto-injector. Preventive measures at home were inconsistently applied, and 41.1% took no precautions when eating out. Communication with external caregivers was often informal or absent. Only 33% updated physicians regularly. Conclusions: The findings reveal significant gaps in parental preparedness and highlight critical areas for educational intervention. Enhanced caregiver training, standardized communication protocols, and improved clinical follow-up are essential to strengthen pediatric FA management and safety. Full article

Background: Understanding the determinants of children’s outdoor play is an important element for child development and broader public health outcomes. There is growing evidence that children’s opportunities for play, particularly outdoor risky play, are diminishing. Parents are concerned with keeping their child safe while affording them independence to play. This study explored parents’ attitudes to risky play and practices around children’s independent mobility in Ireland with the aim of informing public health strategies promoting healthy childhood environments. Methods: An online survey comprising validated scales and standardised questions was completed by a nationally represented sample of 376 parents of children up to 16 years. Data was analysed via descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis. Results: A total of 376 participants accessed the survey, of which 349 completed it. A total of 84% of participants were female. A total of 74% agreed that children need regular exposure to actual risk to develop risk management skills, and 71% trusted their children to play safely. Chi-square tests reveal significant associations between outdoor play in the rain and school travel (p < 0.01), and appropriate age to begin activities at home and in educational settings (p < 0.05). A moderate association was found between the method of school travel and children’s permission to play in the rain (Cramer’s V = 0.51). Respondents considered supervision to be a necessity to ensure their children’s safety. Overall, the results indicate that parents were risk-averse in three of the six categories of risky play, namely, play near dangerous elements, play with adult tools, and out-of-sight play. Conclusions: This study presents a descriptive analysis of findings from the Ireland State of Play Survey. Findings indicate that although parents recognise the benefits of risky play, there is some contradiction between parental attitudes and actual practices, with a lack of willingness or confidence in permitting their children to participate in all such activities. Background/Objectives: Infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) face challenges in achieving successful oral feedings. During oral feedings, these infants commonly present with suck–swallow–breathe incoordination, with approximately 30% developing dysphagia, leading to feeding aversion, prolonged hospitalization, and increased parental stress. Cold liquid feeding has demonstrated benefits in improving feeding safety in adults with dysphagia; however, its application in neonates is relatively limited. This study aimed to examine global neonatal feeding practices, with a specific emphasis on cold milk feeding as an intervention for dysphagia. Methods: A cross-sectional global electronic survey was distributed via professional society listservs and closed online professional group forums targeting neonatal providers and feeding therapists from June 2023 to June 2024. The survey assessed institutional feeding protocols, oral feeding practices, and the use of cold milk for infants with dysphagia. Responses were analyzed descriptively. Results: A total of 210 complete responses were received from level IV (51%), level III (42%), and level II (5%) NICUs. While 30% of the respondents were aware of cold milk feeding as a dysphagia intervention, only 15% of the total respondents reported using it in practice. Among the 32 institutions implementing cold milk practices, only one had an established protocol. Additionally, 72% reported having a feeding protocol in place, often incorporating cue-based tools. Most respondents (87.5%) did not allow oral feeding during nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP), whereas 78% permitted it during high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) support. Conclusions: Although the awareness of cold milk feeding in neonates is increasing, its implementation remains limited and lacks standardization. Significant variability exists in oral feeding practices, particularly regarding feeding during respiratory support. This underscores the need for further research and evidence-based guidelines to ensure safe and consistent care for preterm infants. Full article

Online safety guidance is frequently delivered as a specialist technology issue without considering adolescents’ home lives, offline vulnerabilities, or wellbeing. Yet, while the digital world offers connection, autonomy, and entertainment, vulnerable teens also encounter more violent content, sexual exploitation, and content concerning body image, self-harm or suicide than their non-vulnerable peers. Many struggle with social inclusion or less engaged and credible caregiver e-safety support, which may contribute to their negative experiences online. To improve their online safety and resilience, caregivers and educators might consider offline factors that can mediate exposure to online harms. This study compared the experiences of 213 adolescents with family vulnerabilities to 213 age- and gender-matched non-vulnerable adolescents. The contribution of (a) e-safety education, (b) close friendships, (c) a trusted adult at school, and (d) life-affecting worry was considered. No differences were found for exposure to, or engagement with, e-safety education. However, despite having received e-safety education, those with family vulnerabilities were more at risk of encountering severe online harms. This was mediated by life-affecting worry and parental e-safety guidance. These findings provide unique insights into the impact of family vulnerabilities on adolescents’ exposure to online harms and suggest a more holistic intervention framework for caregivers. The rising prevalence of cyberbullying in online environments has raised concerns about the well-being and safety of individuals. The objective of this research is to explore if the dark triad traits (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) function as mediators in the connections between maternal psychological control, paternal psychological control, cyberbullying, and cybervictimization. A sample of 1016 young adults participated in an online survey, providing self-reported data. The results revealed complex relationships among the variables examined. While most direct and indirect links were statistically significant, the direct connection between maternal psychological control and cyberbullying was significant only when paternal psychological control was not simultaneously included as a predictor. Furthermore, narcissism’s mediating effects were beneficial when Machiavellianism and psychopathy were excluded and negative otherwise. The results highlight that individuals with high degrees of parental psychological control are more prone to engage in manipulative actions and lack empathy, leading to cyberbullying and cybervictimization. Future research should disentangle the distinct roles of maternal and paternal control, investigate the interplay among dark triad traits in different social contexts, and consider how peer dynamics and digital environments may amplify or mitigate these effects. The Mosaic approach has been effectively used to gather children’s voices in early childhood settings using a children’s voices framework, although research translation using these voices is less reported. This paper bridges this gap by reporting on the voices of young children from military and veteran families and the free, narrative-based resources co-created using these voices to strengthen children’s capacity to survive and thrive in these families. Children from military families can experience frequent relocations, multiple and prolonged parental deployments and heightened anxiety about the safety of the member parent. Children from military and veteran families might also experience the challenges of living with a parent who is injured (physically, mentally and/or morally). The children’s voices gathered in an initial study revealed four themes about their experiences in Australian military and veteran families, namely, (i) Department of Defence supports, (ii) communication, (iii) acculturation and ritual, and (iv) narrative. The research team worked with the affected community and partners to co-create resources that aligned with these themes. To achieve this, the team conducted an additional online survey with community members who had lived experience in military and veteran families, along with research partners and professionals who supported these families. The aim was to identify the types of resources and content they felt would best support children’s psychosocial development. The children’s voices, subsequent research data, and the literature were woven together to co-create free, online research-based educational and psychosocial resources to strengthen the coping strategies of young children from these families. This will interest those who aim for children’s voices not only to be heard but to have an impact on the world. Full article

Background/objectives: Influenza vaccines are recommended and free in Australia for children aged <5 years, but uptake remains low at 25.8% compared to the targets of 40% and 50%. National data on barriers hindering paediatric influenza vaccination can inform strategies to improve uptake. The aim of this study was to measure barriers to influenza vaccination in Australian children aged <5 years. Methods: A national, cross-sectional survey of parents of children aged <5 years was conducted in March/April 2024. Parents were recruited using an online panel and asked about their intention to get an influenza vaccine for their youngest child in the upcoming influenza season. An adapted version of the validated Vaccine Barriers Assessment Tool measured 14 influenza vaccination barriers. Analysis assessed the prevalence of barriers and differences between parents intending to and those unsure or not intending to vaccinate by calculating the prevalence difference and 95% confidence interval. Results: A total of 2000 parents were recruited nationally. The most common barrier was parents feeling distressed when thinking about vaccinating their child against influenza (66.1% of intending parents, 65.6% of unsure/not intending parents). The barrier with the largest difference between intending and not intending/unsure parents was not prioritising their child’s influenza vaccination (47.2% vs. 6.1%, PD = 41.1 ppts, 95% CI: 35.9%, 46.3%). Other barriers with large differences were parents not feeling guilty if their unvaccinated child got influenza (41.5% vs. 7.5%, PD = 34.0 ppts, 95% CI: 28.8%, 39.1%) and parents not believing that influenza vaccines are effective (31.3% vs. 3.0%, PD = 28.2 ppts, 95% CI: 23.6%, 32.9%). Conclusions: Parents should be encouraged and supported to prioritise influenza vaccination alongside routine childhood vaccines in campaigns that emphasise disease risk and the importance, safety and effectiveness of influenza vaccination, and by optimising access to influenza vaccination. We recommend conducting similar surveys regularly to monitor trends in parental barriers to childhood influenza vaccination. Full article

Stakeholders from parents to policy-makers are concerned about youth online safety. Present solutions are frequently punitive and often lack opportunities for youth to make mistakes and try again in a safe environment. This paper proposes a new framework, based on trauma-informed child psychology models and research by computer scientists and human-centered design scholars, entitled Pause, Reflect, and Redirect (PRR). The PRR framework offers three levels of intervention ranging from casual engagement to coached engagement with crisis response. To further develop and validate PRR as a framework, PRR was implemented within a web-filtering software that was installed in a public middle school comprising grades 6 to 8 (i.e., ages 11–14) in an urban charter district. Preliminary results from the deployment of the software suggest that it may help youth make better choices with respect to their online behaviors. Full article

Sustainable Public Health Policies: Understanding Influenza Vaccination Uptake Among College Students in a Changing Society

Influenza poses a significant public health threat, causing millions of severe cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. Vaccination remains the most effective measure to reduce transmission, complications, and the strain on healthcare systems. Despite its importance, vaccination uptake remains suboptimal among college students, a key population for infectious disease transmission and a target group for public health interventions. The primary objective of this study was to examine the psychological and contextual determinants of influenza vaccination among college students in Israel, utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as the guiding framework. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 591 students at Ashkelon Academic College between April and May 2023. The questionnaire included validated items assessing attitudes toward vaccination, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and vaccination history. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to assess the predictive power of these variables in explaining actual vaccination behavior. The results indicated that prior vaccination was the strongest predictor of current influenza vaccine uptake (OR = 38.7, p < 0.001). Positive attitudes (e.g., belief in vaccine protection), strong social influences (e.g., parental vaccination behavior and trust in healthcare professionals), and high perceived behavioral control (e.g., accessibility and convenience) were all significantly associated with increased vaccination likelihood. The final model explained 68% of the variance in vaccination behavior (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.68, p < 0.001). These findings affirm the TPB as a robust framework for understanding vaccination behavior and underscore the importance of habitual vaccination, public trust, and systemic accessibility. The study contributes to the field by illustrating how national healthcare infrastructure interacts with individual-level beliefs to shape preventive health actions. Practical applications include the development of targeted interventions to promote first-time vaccination, address vaccine safety concerns, and leverage trusted social networks. Future research should investigate how digital communication, policy variation, and sociocultural context influence the components of the TPB across diverse populations. Full article

Background. This study examines the behavioral responses of adolescents to online sexual harassment based on their roles as victims, perpetrators, both, or neutral participants. Methods. Data from a national sample of Croatian high school students (N = 2016) were used to investigate the influence of these roles on reaction patterns. This study explores coping strategies among students involved in online sexual harassment as victims, perpetrators, or both. Results. Students with dual roles rarely sought help from parents, teachers, or helplines, while perpetrators avoided confiding in friends or siblings. Conversely, uninvolved students were most likely to seek support from these sources. Victims often confided in friends and responded by blocking, confronting, deleting content, or avoiding the harasser. Dual-role students commonly mirrored the harassment they experienced, suggesting a cycle of retaliation and blurred victim–perpetrator boundaries. Interestingly, no significant role-based differences were found for passive responses like ignoring harassment or reporting on social media platforms. Conclusion. These results underline the critical need for targeted interventions to foster digital resilience and tailor support mechanisms based on adolescents’ experiences and roles in online interactions. This research contributes to the understanding of role-specific behavioral dynamics in the digital sphere, offering actionable insights for educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals to enhance online safety and support systems for youth. In Pakistan, implementing road safety education (RSE) initiatives is vital in tackling the concerning rates of road accidents. Since parents and teachers are crucial in moulding children’s road safety behaviours, this study investigated the perspectives of parents and teachers regarding the acceptability of RSE programs in Pakistan. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from questionnaires (n = 63 teachers, n = 97 parents) with qualitative insights from interviews (five teachers, four parents). The study reveals significant gaps in RSE implementation across educational levels (i.e., primary, secondary, and high school), with not even half of the teachers reporting dedicated RSE programs in their curriculum, majorly in secondary and high schools. Both parents and teachers express dissatisfaction with current RSE effectiveness, highlighting a critical need for improvement. Key barriers to RSE implementation include cultural norms, inadequate infrastructure, and limited teacher training. However, the study also identifies a strong interest from parents and teachers in participating in effective RSE programs. Parents favour a mixed approach to RSE delivery, combining online and physical formats, and prefer short, frequent sessions for their children. The research underscores the need for a multidimensional RSE approach, addressing educational content, societal perceptions, and infrastructure improvements. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and educators to enhance RSE and improve children’s road safety knowledge in Pakistan. Full article

Background: School-based immunization programs are crucial for equitable vaccine coverage, yet their success depends on parental consent processes. This study investigates patterns of vaccine decision-making within Australia’s school-based immunization program, specifically focusing on human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) vaccines offered free to adolescents aged 12–13. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (2022–2023). Semi-structured interviews were held with school staff (n = 11) across government, Catholic, and independent schools, parents whose children were not vaccinated at school (n = 11) and a focus group with public health unit staff (n = 5). Data were analyzed to identify key barriers and patterns in vaccine decision-making. Results: Analysis revealed three distinct groups of parents whose children were not vaccinated through the school program: (1) those favoring general practitioners for vaccination, driven by trust in medical providers and a preference for personalized care; (2) those intending to consent but facing logistical barriers, including communication breakdowns and online consent challenges; and (3) vaccine-hesitant parents, particularly regarding HPV vaccination, influenced by safety concerns and misinformation. These findings demonstrate that non-participation in school vaccination programs should not be automatically equated with vaccine hesitancy. Conclusions: Tailored interventions are necessary for addressing vaccine non-participation. Recommendations include strengthening collaboration with general practitioners, streamlining consent processes and providing targeted education to counter misinformation. This study provides valuable insights into social determinants of vaccine acceptance and offers actionable strategies for improving vaccine uptake in school-based programs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Influenza vaccination is the main method for preventing influenza. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the opinions of families on influenza vaccination and to determine the acceptance of influenza vaccination as a routine vaccine in children under 5 years of age. Methods: The method used was a descriptive cross-sectional study based on an ad-hoc survey. Between October 2023 and January 2024, an online survey was conducted among families with children between 6 months and 14 years of age attending paediatric consultations at a health centre. Results: A total of 388 families were surveyed. Out of these, 22.68% reported having ever vaccinated their children against influenza. The main reason for having them vaccinated was having received the recommendation from the paediatrician (68.18%). While 53.61% agreed with routine influenza vaccination, 53.09% did not intend to vaccinate their children against influenza in the 2023/24 period. The reasons for not vaccinating in 2023/24 were unawareness of the disease (29.41%), fear of unwanted effects of vaccination (27.94%) and lack of information about vaccination (19.61%). The reasons for vaccination in 2023/24 were protection of the child (81.87%), recommendation by the paediatrician (43.41%) and protection of the general population and susceptible persons (20.33%). Conclusions: Routine influenza vaccination is accepted by half of the parents. A lack of risk perception of the disease, concern about vaccine safety and lack of information are the main reasons for not vaccinating. It is essential to follow the health professionals’ recommendation to vaccinate. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected teaching and student outcomes throughout the world, yet the long-term impacts of the pandemic on teachers and students in Latin America and Spain remain largely underexamined. This study examined the experiences of 5416 teachers from 20 Spanish-speaking countries during and after the pandemic, with an emphasis on teachers’ health, teaching experiences, and school-based support; perceptions of their students’ experiences and struggles; and relationships with students, families, and colleagues. The study used an online survey design with recruitment primarily based on snowball sampling, with most variables being collected using Likert-style responses. Descriptive statistics as well as bivariate correlations between variables were calculated. The results suggested that teachers were mostly healthy and reported moderate fear of COVID-19, though there was much variability. While, on average, teachers did not believe the pandemic had had a negative impact on their relationships with parents, colleagues, and students, they believed that the pandemic had a meaningful negative impact on their students by increasing problems in five key domains: educational, behavioral, social, emotional, and familial. Teachers had received very little training regarding online teaching, although they were moderately satisfied with the resources they had received to teach online and the safety measures their schools had implemented. Schools should provide additional support to teachers, students, and families during times of prolonged stress such as pandemics to help mitigate their lasting effects on students’ academic and psychosocial functioning. Background/Objectives: The way people communicate has significantly changed due to technological advances and penetration of cell phones and broadband connection into everyday activities. Nowadays, individuals are constantly connected through the Internet. This influences social experiences, self and social identity, and can cause digital stress, which often leads to negative emotions, psychosomatic outcomes, and diseases. It is a matter of concern for the adolescents and their families. This paper investigates how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and social media influence adolescents’ and parents’ digital stress and anxiety. Methods: Based on two digital stressors scales, a 30-item questionnaire was created. A quantitative analysis of data deriving from 164 Finnish adolescents and 53 of their parents regarding digital stress was conducted. Results: “Privacy Intrusion”, “Availability stress/Online vigilance”, and “Usefulness” were the most essential stressor factors for both students and parents. Additionally, the most significant stressor factors for students were the “Fear of Missing Out/FoMO” and “Approval Anxiety” factors while for parents were the “Safety/Security” and “Technical Support” factors. No significant differences were observed between the overall digital stress of adolescents and parents. In contrast to the existing literature, no connection between “Connection (Information) Overload” and digital stress was found. Conclusions: This paper contributes to debates regarding the effects of the use of digital resources, ICTs, and social media on processes at school, at work, and at home. The findings of our study confirm and further validate those of previous studies with the exception of “Connection (Information) Overload”, which needs to be further investigated to understand the reasons behind it.
