In recent studies, public health has been considered a key stakeholder in climate mitigation and adaptation in cities since they are more exposed to the impact of climate change. Nurses represent a vast majority of public health professionals, playing a key role in health promotion that allows them to influence individuals, families, and communities in adopting healthier behaviours and decarbonized lifestyles. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to map the existing evidence on nursing interventions, which are being led or implemented to reduce the health risks related to climate change in urban areas. The present review follows the JBI methodological framework, including a search on PubMed, MEDLINE complete, CINAHL Complete, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), and RCAAP. Hand searched references were also considered, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies between January 2014 and October 2024, for a more contemporary perspective. A three-step search strategy and data extraction tool were used by two independent reviewers. Twenty-seven studies in English and Portuguese were eligible for inclusion, all targeting a population of professionals with nursing-related roles: two case studies, one Delphi panel, one descriptive study, one historical research paper, two using a methodological design format, four narrative reviews, one observational study, nine review articles, three scoping reviews, and three systematic reviews. Eight categories of nursing interventions that contribute to decarbonized lifestyles, reducing health risks in relation to climate change, were acknowledged. Nurses play a key role in empowering individuals, families, and communities, promoting climate awareness and literacy, supporting health policy change, advocating for the most vulnerable and engaging in environmental activism, using evidence-based research, and taking advantage of marketing strategies and social media. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is changing higher education. Understanding students’ perceptions, usage behaviour and ethical concerns is crucial for the responsible and sustainable use of AI in the academic environment. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions, experiences and challenges of health sciences students in relation to the use of generative AI in their academic learning. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 397 students enrolled in four undergraduate health-related degree programmes in Slovenia, including nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics and applied kinesiology. The data was collected using a validated 27-point scale. Students were generally favourable towards AI, especially in terms of its perceived usefulness, integration into their daily study routine and ethical considerations. Regression analyses revealed that frequency of AI use, duration of use, self-reported skill level and confidence in using AI significantly predicted perceived usefulness. Gender differences were found, with male students reporting higher perceived usefulness and fewer concerns. Students recognised the potential of generative AI but emphasised the importance of ethical guidance, digital literacy and equal access. Institutions should prioritise structured training and inclusive strategies to ensure meaningful, sustainable and responsible integration of AI into health education. Full article

Background/Objectives: Leadership in nursing plays a pivotal role in the provision of high-quality healthcare. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to understand the challenges encountered by newly qualified nurses when assuming leadership responsibilities. This scoping review protocol aims to identify and map these challenges, thereby facilitating the development of more effective interventions and support programmes. The data collection and analysis were conducted from January 2024 to March 2024. Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) recommendations. A comprehensive search was undertaken across MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, and SciELO databases, in addition to a search for the grey literature. Study selection was performed by two independent reviewers, applying pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were extracted using a standardised form and analysed descriptively. Results: The review identified several key challenges faced by newly qualified nurses in leadership roles, including conflict management, decision-making under pressure, and effective communication. These findings highlight the complexity of transitioning from academic training to professional practice. The results provide a comprehensive overview of these challenges, enabling the identification of gaps in the existing knowledge base and informing the direction of future research and interventions. Conclusions: The findings of this review will contribute to the enhancement of healthcare quality and the promotion of the professional development of newly qualified nurses. This research underscores the importance of developing targeted interventions and support systems to address the specific challenges identified, thereby influencing nursing practice and policy. The Symptom Navi Program (SNP) is a self-management support (SMS) intervention for people with cancer. It consists of self-management supportive leaflets, educational conversations, and two standardized training sessions. A descriptive quality evaluation method was used to evaluate SNP implementation across 14 cancer services from 2021 to 2024. We evaluated training content, methods, and participants’ confidence to use SMS in their clinical routine. Nurses, social workers, and psychologists completed ad hoc closed and open-ended questions after each training. The Work Sense of Coherence (Work-SoC) scale was used to elicit participants’ self-reported perceptions of their work context at cancer services. A series of descriptive analyses were conducted on the Work-SoC scale, the training content, and the methods. In addition, training-specific questions and predefined hypotheses were correlated. Thematic analysis was employed to examine open-ended questions. The SNP training content and methods largely met participants’ needs. Participants’ confidence in applying educational conversations decreased over time. The findings suggest a robust correlation between the application of educational conversations in daily routines and the participants’ perceptions regarding the comprehensibility and manageability of their work situations. Future research focusing on the implementation of SMS in clinical practice should examine the work context. Full article

Background/Objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), significantly affects patients’ quality of life. Resilience and self-care are vital for disease management, yet their relationship with IBD remains underexplored. This study investigates how self-care behaviours influence resilience in patients with IBD, taking into account sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: This was a multicentre observational study. Data were collected during routine outpatient visits between April and June 2024. Participants (≥18 years) with an IBD diagnosis for at least 12 months were recruited. Data were collected using validated instruments, including the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25), the Self-Care of Chronic Illness Inventory (SC-CII), and sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires. Disease activity was assessed using the Mayo Score (UC) and the Harvey–Bradshaw Index (CD). Descriptive, correlational, and regression analyses explored variable relationships. This study was conducted as part of the N-ECCO Research Grant initiative. Results: A total of 401 participants (CD: 196, UC: 205) were enrolled, with equal gender distribution (50.1% male). The descriptive analysis of self-care levels showed a mean score of 72.6 (SD = 12.5) for self-care maintenance, 81.0 (SD = 18.2) for self-care monitoring, and 70.5 (SD = 18.4) for self-care management. The UC patients had higher self-care management scores than the CD patients (p = 0.002). The median resilience score was 45, and self-care management positively predicted resilience (β = 0.041, p < 0.001). Disease severity negatively affected resilience and self-care, particularly in severe cases (β = −8.334, p < 0.001). The females reported higher resilience and self-care monitoring scores than the men. Conclusions: Resilience and self-care are interrelated and crucial in IBD management. Enhancing resilience through personalised nursing interventions and integrating psychological and educational support may improve self-care and clinical outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: The high sensitivity of paediatric nurses directly influences the quality of nursing care provided to patients. The purpose of this study is to present the most frequent issues faced by paediatric nurses in their everyday work and their responses to difficult situations at work, define the actions applied when a difficult situation occurs, and assess the level of stress and other factors influencing the level of stress experienced by paediatric nurses. Methods: This study was conducted using an original survey form and a standardised psychological questionnaire based on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) for paediatric nurses. Results: The study involved 416 paediatric nurses and indicated a medium level of stress among the nurses. The median stress level, calculated as the sum of answers to questions based on the PSS-10, was 18 (16.0 ÷ 20.0), and the mean was 17.9 (min–max = 1–30). The median Sten score was 6 (5.0 ÷ 7.0), and the mean Sten score was 5.94 (min–max = 2–9). Nurses aged 21–30 years, who live in a city, have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in Nursing, and work ≥ 61 h a week and 161–250 h a month experience a higher level of stress. Factors such as choosing which child to help first, spending a great deal of time filling out medical documentation, obtaining a sick child’s consent to perform nursing procedures which the child does not understand, involving the minor in decision-making, impolite or offensive behaviour from a sick child or their parents, ineffective nursing and treatment methods, providing care against the opinion/views of a sick child or their parents, difficulties in or a lack of understanding of the situation of a sick child and their family, performing nursing procedures that can cause the child pain, and the inability to fulfil a sick child’s request increase the level of stress experienced by paediatric nurses. When a difficult situation occurs at work occurs, the nurses usually meet and talk about the situation with someone close (72.4%) or engage in other activities to avoid thinking about the situation (66.6%). They consult a psychologist/psychotherapist very rarely (9.6%) and a psychiatrist extremely rarely (4.6%). Conclusions: Polish paediatric nurses were found to experience a medium level of stress. Since paediatric nurses are exposed to stress, providing them with psychological care is important. The level of perceived stress is dependent on the nurse’s age, place of residence, and education, as well as weekly and monthly working durations. Paediatric nurses experience many difficult situations in their everyday work that influence their stress levels. Management should pay special attention to difficult workplace situations faced by paediatric nurses and implement regular actions to reduce the levels of stress experienced. Full article

Background/Objectives: Clinical incidents can be valuable learning tools to improve patient safety. However, failure to report or underreporting of clinical incidents is a global phenomenon. Understanding nurses’ experiences is essential to identifying challenges and developing strategies to enhance incident reporting behaviours. This review aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of acute care bedside nurses regarding incident reporting. Methods: This review used scoping review methods. A search of the MEDLINE and CINAHL databases returned 16 papers that were included in the review. Results: Five main themes were identified—Fear of Reporting, Levels of Reporting, Lack of Knowledge, Education and Training on Reporting, Benefits of Reporting, and Changing the Culture. Conclusions: Nurses experience fear of incident reporting stemming from negative repercussions and the organisational blame culture. Lack of knowledge and training about errors and incident reporting processes limits incident reporting behaviours. To enhance reporting behaviours, promoting a just culture that includes the support of managers, open communication, and feedback on incidents is important. Education and training can also enhance nurses’ awareness and capability of incident reporting. Full article

Background: high levels of stress have hazardous impacts on nurses’ health, well-being, job satisfaction, and abilities to cope with the job demands, which in turn may impact the provision of quality patient care, which is essential for universal health coverage. Aim: to investigate the relationship of perceived stress related to personality traits, chronotype, and eating behaviour among hospital and community nurses in Brunei. Methods: A cross-sectional survey on nurses from public hospitals and community health centres from all four districts in the country. The questionnaire included Perceived Stress Scale to measure stress levels, the brief Big Five Inventory to identify personality, the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire to identify chronotype, and the Sakata Eating Behaviour Questionnaire to identify eating behaviour. Subgroup analysis and partial least squares structural equation modelling were applied. Results: The structural equation model revealed that personality trait (β = 0.482) is the most salient and strongest factor contributing to perceived stress, followed by chronotype profile (β = 0.45), accounting for 71.4% of the variance explained for perceived stress. Whereas perceived stress (β = 0.719) is a factor affecting eating behaviour, which accounts for 51.6% of the variance explained for eating behaviour. Conclusions: This study revealed that neuroticism and evening chronotype are significant stress predictors. Stress affects eating habits, with stressed nurses showing poor eating patterns. Older and single nurses report higher stress. Full article

Background: Stress affects 45% of NHS staff. More research is needed to explore how to develop resilient mental health nurses who face multiple workplace stressors, including interacting with distressed clients. Higher Education Institutions are uniquely placed to introduce coping skills that help reduce anxiety and increase confidence for pre-registration nurses entering placements for the first time. Methods: A convenience sample of first year mental health student nurses (whole cohort), recruited before their first clinical placement, were invited to participate. Following a mixed methods design, we developed a 360-degree virtual reality (VR) video, depicting a distressed service user across three scenes, filmed in a real-life decommissioned in-patient ward. Participants followed the service user through the scenes, as though in real life. We used the video alongside a cognitive reappraisal/solution-focused/VERA worksheet and supportive clinical supervision technique to explore students’ experiences of VR as an educative tool and to help build emotional coping skills. Results: N = 21 mental health student nurses were recruited to the study. Behavioural responses to the distressed patient scenario were varied. Students that had prior experience in health work were more likely to feel detached from the distress of the service user. Although for some students VR provided a meaningful learning experience in developing emotional awareness, other students felt more like a ‘fly on the wall’ than an active participant. Empathetic and compassionate responses were strongest in those who perceived a strong immersive effect. Overall, the supportive supervision appeared to decrease the anxiety of the small sample involved, but confidence was not affected. Conclusion: The use of 360-degree VR technology as an educative, classroom-based tool to moderate anxiety and build confidence in pre-placement mental health nursing students was partially supported by this study. The effectiveness of such technology appeared to be dependent on the degree to which ‘immersion’ and a sense of presence were experienced by students. Our cognitive reappraisal intervention proved useful in reducing anxiety caused by ‘the patient in distress scenario’ but only for students who achieved a deep immersive effect. Students with prior exposure to distressing events (in their personal lives and in clinical settings) might have developed other coping mechanisms (e.g., detachment). These findings support the idea that ‘presence’ is a subjective VR experience and can vary among users. Full article

Depressive disorders are highly prevalent among older adults (60+) in Europe. Activating these patients was a core component of the GermanIMPACT study, which evaluated collaborative care in a cluster-randomized primary care setting. The intervention group showed a significant improvement in PHQ-9 remission. The aim of this secondary analysis was to investigate which activities were planned and whether their implementation or non-implementation was associated with depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) after 12 months. Behavioural activation data were collected by the care managers. A categorization for activity type (collected as free text) and activity implementation status was developed. The association of successfully implemented activities, planned-not-implemented activities, and the number of activities per patient with the 12-month PHQ-9 total score was calculated using logistic regressions (adjusted for age, gender, living situation/baseline PHQ-9). A total 2188 activities were planned for 136 patients; 66% were successfully implemented. Mean age was 71 (±7) years (78% female; 52% living alone). Activities focusing on “self-care/spirituality” improved the PHQ-9 outcome (OR 1.540; p = 0.048), while planned-not-implemented activities overall worsened it (OR 1.16; p = 0.007). Patient activation is key to treating depressive symptoms in old age. Particularly ‘self-care/spirituality’ activities could be planned, and organizational activities should be closely supported. Understanding maternal behaviour is essential for good animal husbandry; yet, little scientific information currently exists regarding nursing behaviour of alpacas (Vicugna pacos). Moreover, allonursing (the nursing of non-filial offspring) has only been documented in captive non-domesticated guanacos. This study aimed to (1) describe the nursing behaviour of alpacas within traditional husbandry systems in their place of origin, and in foreign conditions, and to (2) investigate the occurrence of allonursing in alpacas. A total of 1899 nursing bouts were observed in the Andes and Central Europe. Additionally, 102 Andean farmers were asked if they observed allonursing in their herds. Nursing behaviour was similar at both locations, with most of the nursing bouts initiated by crias and terminated by dams. However, several significant differences between localities were noted, such as the less frequent sniffing of crias by Andean dams. Crias’ age and sex did not affect the percentage of nursing bouts initiated or terminated by the dams. Rare cases of allonursing were recorded in Central Europe (n = 5), and 18.6% of surveyed Andean farmers reported allonursing in their herds. This study provides insight into alpaca nursing and allonursing behaviour, which may contribute towards their management both in their place of origin and farther. Full article

Evaluation of Health Promotion in International Schools Using the Schools for Health in Europe (SHE) Rapid Assessment Tool

Background: Many schools are committed to the “Five Steps to a Health Promoting School guide” created by the Schools for Health in Europe (SHE) network to avoid chronic disease and promote healthy environments. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate schools’ health promotion policies and practices via the SHE rapid assessment tool. Methods: From February 2019 to June 2019, a cross-sectional survey based on this tool was conducted in nine international schools that are part of a private network operating in multiple countries. The entire school community was offered the opportunity to participate. The survey consisted of 37 questions aligned with the whole-school approach to health promotion and addressed orientation, healthy school policy, the physical and social environment, health skills, community links, and staff well-being using a three-point scale. A univariate analysis was subsequently performed. Results: A total of 929 people responded, 59.7% of whom were women, representing 74 different nationalities (82.5% Europeans). The average age was 25.9 years, ranging from 7 to 77 years. The participants included 57.2% students, 21.3% teachers, 15.3% families, 3.2% management teams, 1% counsellors/psychologists, 1% administrative/service staff, 0.5% catering staff, 0.3% nursing/medical staff, and 0.2% maintenance staff. The findings revealed that 80% of the respondents felt that most of these health promotion needs were being partially or fully addressed, predominantly with medium or high priority. However, 30% of the respondents indicated that the school had not yet assessed the students’ and employees’ health and well-being needs or fully promoted a healthy work-life. Conclusions: The SHE rapid assessment tool serves as an effective initial step in identifying key indicators within the school community, offering insights for future action towards becoming a health-promoting school. These results underscore the importance of addressing social and behavioural determinants of health within different international educational settings to promote positive sociorelational well-being and youth development. By fostering the well-being of children, adolescents, and the educational community, schools play a pivotal role in reducing the risk factors for chronic diseases and supporting psychosocial adaptation. Within the fields of oncology practice and research, cancer has historically been and continues to be understood as primarily biologically produced and physiologically driven. This understanding is rooted in biomedicine, the dominant model of health and illness in the Western world. Yet, there is increasing evidence of inequities in cancer that are influenced by social and structural inequities. In this article, we propose that cancer-related inequities ought to be seen as issues of social justice, and, given nursing’s longstanding commitments to social justice, they ought to be a priority for oncology nurses. Using a social justice lens, we highlight potential social injustices in the form of inequities in cancer outcomes and access to cancer care across the cancer continuum. Our intention is not to provide an exhaustive review of evidence, but to provide our perspective, adding to the dialogue surrounding health equity and cancer while shifting the narrative away from an understanding of cancer inequities as stemming from “lifestyle” and “behavioural” choices. We conclude by exploring the implications of considering cancer inequities as social injustices for nursing practice. Full article

Body Fat and Visceral Fat Values in Spanish Healthcare Workers: Associated Variables

Background/Objectives: Excessive body adiposity is a significant public health challenge on a global scale. This study aimed to investigate the association between various sociodemographic factors and healthy lifestyle habits and the presence or absence of elevated body adiposity levels. Methodology: Two studies were conducted, a retrospective longitudinal study and a cross-sectional descriptive study. The analysis included 44,939 healthcare workers, categorised into four professional groups, to explore the relationship between age, sex, smoking, physical activity, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet and body adiposity, assessed as elevated body fat (BF) and visceral fat (VF) levels. Descriptive statistics encompassed categorical and quantitative variables, analysed using frequencies, Student’s t-tests, chi-square tests, and multinomial logistic regression models. Associations, concordances, and correlations were further examined using logistic regression and Cohen’s and Pearson’s kappa coefficients. Results: Age, sex, and physical activity were the factors most strongly associated with elevated BF and VF levels. Odds ratios (ORs) indicated the following significant associations: individuals aged 60 years and older exhibited ORs of 6.71 (95% CI: 5.68–7.74) for BF and 12.18 (95% CI: 10.01–14.26) for VF; male sex was associated with ORs of 2.21 (95% CI: 2.06–2.36) for BF and 12.51 (95% CI: 11.29–13.74) for VF. Sedentary behaviour was linked to ORs of 3.69 (95% CI: 3.41–3.97) for BF and 4.20 (95% CI: 3.78–4.63) for VF. Among healthcare professionals, nursing assistants and orderlies demonstrated the highest levels of adipose tissue accumulation. Conclusions: Elevated BF and VF levels among healthcare personnel are significantly associated by lifestyle factors, sex, and age, with the most pronounced risk observed in nursing assistants and orderlies. Further research focusing on the causal relationships between lifestyle behaviours and adiposity in this population will provide valuable insights and support the design of targeted preventive strategies to mitigate its prevalence. Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Uptake Among Australian Healthcare Professionals: An Archetype for Success

Background/Objectives: Qualitative research suggests there may be identifiable characteristics that form a health professional (HCP) archetype associated with habitual seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV). However, the validity of this archetype requires further investigation, ideally within a theoretical framework that can elucidate this association and its generalisability to other vaccines. This study aims to confirm key HCP archetype characteristics associated with SIV, as informed by prior qualitative research findings, and test the generalisability of the association between this archetype and SIV to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Method: A cross-sectional survey was designed and distributed to an Australian HCP sample consisting of practicing nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and medical practitioners. The anonymous online survey measured key characteristics that predict vaccination behaviour and intention. Results: Most participants (n = 173) demonstrated habitual SIV behaviour (77.91%) associated with the intention to vaccinate in the future. Survey findings supported the HCP archetype, as key constructs were associated with vaccination intention and behaviour, including heightened professional responsibility, vaccine confidence, and protection of self and patients. Furthermore, results suggested progressing vaccination intention to behaviour, overcoming vaccine complacency, is possible through the provision of free, accessible vaccination services. These critical factors were broadly generalisable to the COVID-19 vaccine. Conclusions: A vaccination-positive HCP archetype, supported by access to free, convenient vaccination services, was associated with the likelihood of future vaccination behaviour, including in future pandemic response scenarios. However, it will be important to ensure that HCP vaccine knowledge gaps are minimised to enhance trust in this cohort to enable broad success. Full article
