The classical Chinese poem The Ballad of Mulan and Riyoko Ikeda’s iconic shōjo manga series The Rose of Versailles are two important East Asian cultural texts that are compared in this article to examine feminist resistance and gender negotiation. The protagonists of both stories are women who work in very patriarchal environments while also opposing, subverting, and eventually overcoming traditional gender norms. This paper argues that both texts enact what could be called a “dialectics of compliance and resistance”—that is, a simultaneous negotiation between conformity to institutional norms for survival and resistance through exposing and challenging those same norms in which heroines must adopt masculine codes to survive institutional structures, but in doing so reveal those structures as arbitrary and historically contingent—through the analytical lenses of feminist literary criticism, queer theory, postcolonial gender studies, and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity. The article explores the mechanics of cross-dressing as a political act, the ideological ambivalence ingrained in narrative closure, the construction of female heroism, and the divergent yet convergent ways in which each text positions itself relative to its own socio-political moment. They do this by drawing on close textual reading and cultural-historical contextualisation. In the end, the paper argues that The Ballad of Mulan and The Rose of Versailles share a feminist imaginary that resonates strongly with current discourses on gender, identity, and resistance, even though they come from different cultural and generic traditions and are separated by more than fourteen centuries. Speed management remains a central challenge in road safety, particularly in road segments where geometric design, crash concentration, or downstream stopping conditions require drivers to reduce speed. Although conventional traffic signs provide regulatory guidance, recent behavioral approaches suggest that message framing may influence driver compliance by activating different cognitive and social associated psychological constructs. However, limited evidence exists on how traditional speed-reduction signs compare with urgency-based, risk-based, and social-norm messages in shaping drivers’ behavioral intention. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of five speed-reduction messages: a standard regulatory sign, an urgency-based version, a crash-risk warning, and two social-norm variants. A within-subject survey design was applied to 326 active drivers, using seven-point Likert scales to measure behavioral intention, perceived risk, social influence, credibility, and clarity. Descriptive comparisons showed that the urgency message obtained the highest behavioral intention score, followed by the standard regulatory and risk-warning messages, whereas both social-norm messages showed lower means and greater dispersion. A latent structural equation model showed good fit and indicated that stated behavioral intention was primarily associated with perceived risk and message credibility, whereas social influence and clarity did not add significant explanatory value once these appraisal constructs were considered. This pattern suggests that drivers’ stated intention to reduce speed is shaped less by social conformity or basic message comprehension and more by whether the sign is perceived as risk-relevant and credible. Field and simulator studies are still needed to determine whether these stated-intention patterns translate into observable speed reduction. Full article

Gender role beliefs have been found to play a role in healthcare interactions and outcomes, although research is scarce in contexts where gender-diversity trends increasingly challenge enduring traditions, as is currently the case in Romanian society. This study explored reported gender-role beliefs and behavioural patterns among fifty Romanian participants involved in medical training and practice, representing a heterogeneous socio-professional spectrum rather than a uniform academic group (aged 20–52 with different personal circumstances and clinical employment). Written and oral reflections on gender role axioms widely known in Romania were assessed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. Results indicated strong endorsement of traditional beliefs—such as male authority and female domestic responsibility—while participants also reported behaviours and life situations inconsistent with those beliefs, including women serving as primary earners, engaging in advanced studies, and balancing multiple roles, and men in caregiving professions. This apparent belief–practice gap, not recognised as such by participants, suggests limited prior reflection on gender issues and potential tensions between pressure to conform to inherited sociocultural norms and evolving personal and professional realities. These findings raise questions regarding possible implications for clinical care, as gender-role assumptions may influence communication, rapport, and preparedness for engaging with gender-diverse patients and peers. They suggest a need for gender-diversity education, reflexivity training, and cultural competence development across undergraduate curricula, continuing education, and workplace training. The key insight of the study is that traditional gender representations can persist unexamined alongside changing behavioural realities, warranting further investigation of their relevance for healthcare education and practice. The integration of collaborative robots into industrial environments requires rigorous safety validation under the Power and Force Limiting (PFL) regime. This review article systematically maps the technological and normative development of certified Pressure and Force Measurement Devices (PFMDs) and experimental biofidelic instruments for Physical Human–Robot Interaction (pHRI) between the years 2011 and 2026. A quantitative screening of 68 studies revealed a publication peak in impact metrology in 2021. This peak occurred with a five-year latency after the release of the ISO/TS 15066 technical specification. Although global interest in collaborative robotics steadily grows, the publication trend indicates a gradual shift in scientific focus from reactive testing toward proactive prevention. A methodological deconstruction of four Research Questions (RQs) identifies persistent limitations in safety evaluation. The findings demonstrate that the internal structure of conventional sensors induces nonlinear shock filtering and parasitic oscillations (RQ1). Furthermore, the rigid fixation of test stands generates unrealistic pressure spikes. This physical limitation forces a transition to flexible and pendulum-based configurations (RQ2). Commercial flat films physically fail due to sensor saturation and introduced stiffness. Such failures accelerate the development of conformable electronic skins (e-skins) and multimodal test manikins (RQ3). To ensure interlaboratory reproducibility within the current ISO 10218-2:2025 standard, the text defines imperative metrological parameters. These parameters strictly include frequency response, calibration protocols, and volumetric mapping of inertial masses (RQ4). Furthermore, the analysed publications were systematically stratified into distinct technological categories, strictly reflecting their primary engineering domains, ranging from empirical metrological evaluation and sensor hardware design to advanced numerical modeling. Finally, the vision for future research anticipates a definitive shift toward proactive anti-collision technologies, encompassing Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine vision, and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed reality (AR/VR/MR). Future methodologies must also consider demographic anisotropies and the cognitive fatigue of the human operator. Full article

Female fashion models face intense bodily surveillance within a competitive and largely unregulated industry. While many young recruits endure the industry’s initial demands, less is known about how these formative experiences are later interpreted. Grounded in feminist and phenomenological perspectives, this article presents an inductive analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with female models aged 25+, exploring entry into modelling, socialization into industry norms, and longer-term effects on body image, eating attitudes, and embodied practices. Five interconnected themes were identified: growing up “superfast”; learning to eat less; being treated as a product; boundary violations as a darker side of modelling; and building resilience within a callous industry. Early immersion in modelling culture shaped psychological development, with self-worth becoming closely tied to conformity with a narrowly defined thin ideal. Aesthetic labour extended beyond paid work to continuous bodily regulation and self-surveillance, producing a persistent tension between the lived, sensing body (Leib) and the body as an object for evaluation (Körper). Disordered eating emerged as a normalised employment strategy. While maturity could soften this process, participants described ongoing attempts to reconcile bodily needs with external judgements. The fashion industry thus emerges as a concentrated site of objectification, with enduring consequences for embodied wellbeing. Full article

Currently, identity formation is undertaken in hyper-individualized virtual microsystems, such as TikTok. Here, content creators set the boundaries of adolescents’ identity exploration and construction. However, few studies have engaged with the content adolescents actively choose to follow to understand the behaviors and messages that are circulated and modeled by TikTok creators. To bridge this gap, 127 TikTok videos from accounts that a sample of 328 Romanian adolescents (Mage = 16.99, SDage = 0.78; 60.4% male) reported following were thematically analyzed. This resulted in a novel codebook that went beyond surface-level content typologies to reveal exposure to positive content, such as awareness raising, family values, and motivational videos, as well as negative content, such as age-inappropriate behaviors, materialistic values, and gender stereotypes. Results suggest that master and alternative narratives are portrayed by TikTok creators, generating tensions between conforming to norms that might be potentially harmful and following less common identity scripts. Reliable potato quality monitoring during postharvest handling requires compact sensing systems that can acquire chemically relevant information while operating on irregular tuber surfaces. In this study, a Flexible Spectral Sensing Gripper (FSSG) was developed by integrating a low-cost 12-channel visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectral sensor array, electronic components, and an ESP32-S microcontroller onto a flexible printed circuit (FPC) substrate encapsulated with PDMS. By embedding the sensing units into the grasping interface, the FSSG enables conformal, multi-point spectral acquisition during potato handling, reducing optical-coupling uncertainty associated with unstable contact. Spectral reflectance data were collected from potato tubers, and dry matter content (DMC) and starch content (SC) were determined by standard chemical analysis as reference values. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were compared under Norm, SNV, MSC, SNV-Norm, and MSC-Norm preprocessing conditions, and support vector machine (SVM) classification was used to distinguish healthy and artificially induced deteriorated samples. Normalization combined with MLR provided the best performance among the evaluated regression approaches, achieving cross-validation coefficients of determination (RCV2) of 0.847 and 0.817 and RPD values of 2.557 and 2.345 for DMC and SC, respectively. The SVM model achieved 98.67% accuracy for healthy versus artificially induced deteriorated potato samples. Overall, the FSSG demonstrates the value of combining gripper-integrated spectral sensing with interpretable chemometric modeling for potato quality screening. The FSSG enables real-time non-destructive quality prediction and disease-detected classification of potatoes, improves sorting accuracy and production efficiency, and provides general sensing solutions for controlled-environment agriculture, cold-chain logistics, and value-added processing of agricultural products. This study conducts a comparative legal analysis of South Korea’s Framework Act on Artificial Intelligence (enacted January 2025, effective January 2026) and the EU AI Act (effective August 2024), focusing on the structural implications of their divergent regulatory philosophies for sustainable digital governance. Employing legal interpretive analysis (textual, systematic, and teleological) and comparative legal methodology, supplemented by risk-based regulation theory and the theory of hardening of soft norms, this paper examines three interconnected dimensions: the conceptual distinction between “high-impact” and “high-risk” AI, the legal nature of self-regulatory structures, and the potential distortion of civil liability attribution. The analysis reveals that Korea’s adoption of the “high-impact” concept, while strategically reducing compliance costs and avoiding stigma effects, generates significant legal gaps, including potential violations of the constitutional principle of clarity, a “liability lightning rod” phenomenon transferring responsibility from AI operators to frontline practitioners, and insufficient institutional prerequisites for effective self-regulation. In contrast, the EU’s ex-ante preventive framework provides greater legal certainty through direct enumeration of high-risk sectors and mandatory conformity assessments. Drawing on the growing body of EU AI Act scholarship, this paper proposes a five-step legislative model for dynamic regulatory adjustment tailored to Korea’s constitutional structure, encompassing statutory core criteria, periodic re-evaluation with parliamentary oversight, phased mandatory enforcement, and a presumption of conformity system, thereby offering a co-regulatory framework that balances innovation promotion with fundamental rights protection. This paper revisits assimilation theory—developed to explain immigrant incorporation into U.S. society—and advances a reformulation centered on reciprocal assimilation. Classical models describe a linear convergence toward dominant Anglo-American norms, while segmented assimilation highlights multiple pathways shaped by context, race, and class. Both, however, tend to frame incorporation as a directional process in which minority groups adapt to dominant institutions. Drawing on contemporary autism scholarship, this paper brings assimilation theory into dialogue with neurodiversity to examine how its core assumptions extend beyond immigrant contexts. Using autism as a critical case, we show that social adaptation often occurs through camouflaging (masking, compensation, and behavioral adjustment), producing outward conformity without changing underlying neurological differences and often carrying psychological costs. These dynamics suggest that inclusion is frequently conditional on sustained performance of normative behavior rather than true structural incorporation. We identify an underlying assumption of universal assimilability within assimilation research and show how engaging with disability calls for a broader conception of incorporation. In response, we propose reciprocal assimilation as a framework in which adaptation emerges through dynamic interaction among individuals, institutions, and social structures. Integrating life-course concepts—turning points, cumulative (dis)advantage, agency, and social bonds—we illustrate how participation trajectories are shaped by accessibility, accommodations, stigma, and support over time. We conclude that a reciprocal model shifts emphasis from cultural convergence to meaningful participation, offering a more flexible framework for understanding incorporation across diverse populations, with implications for research, measurement, and policy. Prestressed concrete railway sleepers are key structural components that determine the safety, durability, and serviceability of modern railway infrastructure. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the design, testing, and acceptance of prestressed concrete sleepers in accordance with EN 13230, with particular reference to the requirements applied on the Polish railway network. The analysis integrates normative provisions, analytical calculations, finite element modeling, and experimental verification, including static, dynamic, and fatigue load tests. Special attention is given to the kt coefficient, which accounts for prestress losses, fatigue degradation, and the development of concrete strength throughout the service life. This coefficient plays a critical role in the acceptance criteria for sleepers during mandatory product testing. The influence of concrete age on the variability of kt is examined, showing that the highest variability occurs within the first 180 days of curing. Full-scale laboratory tests performed on PS-94 sleepers confirm compliance with standard requirements regarding cracking loads, crack width limits, and ultimate load capacity under both exceptional and fatigue loading conditions. Numerical simulations provide additional insight into stress and displacement distributions in critical cross-sections, supporting the experimental findings. The results indicate that most of prestressing force losses occur during the early service period. This observation supports the application of age-dependent acceptance criteria, which may improve conformity assessment procedures for prestressed concrete railway sleepers in contemporary railway engineering practice. This study examined the relationships between norm perceptions about innovation, innovation source and customer satisfaction with sample data from small-scale hospitality businesses in Ghana. We adopted the quantitative approach and correlational survey design using sample data from 465 small-scale hospitality firms. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyse the data. Measurement model classification and validation procedures comprised construct specification, indicator reliability assessment, internal consistency reliability, convergent validity (AVE), discriminant validity (HTMT and Fornell–Larcker), and collinearity diagnostics within the PLS-SEM framework. Results showed that a significant negative relationship exists between subjective norms about innovation adoption and customer satisfaction. This finding diverges from the Theory of Planned Behaviour because, contrary to its assumption that subjective norms foster positive behavioural outcomes, socially driven innovation in small-scale hospitality settings may encourage conformity-based decisions that undermine customer-oriented value creation. However, a significant positive relationship was found to exist between subjective norm perceptions about innovation adoption and innovation source. A significant positive relationship was also found to exist between innovation source and customer satisfaction. Innovation source positively mediated the relationship between subjective norm perceptions about innovation adoption and customer satisfaction. The study’s findings are relevant for owners and managers of small-scale hospitality firms seeking to align innovation decisions with customer needs, as well as for policymakers aiming to strengthen industry support systems. It offers insights into how social influences and innovation sources can be leveraged to enhance service quality and customer satisfaction in small hospitality businesses. Full article

Eating disorders are multifactorial mental health conditions that predominantly affect adolescent girls and young women and constitute a major public health concern due to their severe and often chronic impact on physical, psychological, and psychosocial functioning. Although existing research suggests that gender-related constructs and traditional gender roles may be associated with the development and expression of eating disorders, empirical evidence using validated measures remains limited. Accordingly, the present study examines health-related variables from a gender-sensitive perspective in a clinical sample of women diagnosed with an eating disorder. Forty women aged 14 to 50 years completed an assessment protocol including measures of gender norms, eating disorder symptoms, mental health, and self-perceived overall health. Results indicated that poorer mental health and self-perceived overall health were significantly associated with higher levels of eating disorder symptomatology. In an exploratory hierarchical regression analysis, overall conformity to traditional feminine gender norms was associated with eating disorder symptomatology after accounting for health-related variables. Exploratory analyses of individual gender norm dimensions indicated that only a small number of associations remained statistically significant after applying a false discovery rate correction. In sum, within the limitations of a modest and heterogeneous clinical sample, the findings suggest that conformity to traditional feminine gender norms is associated with less favorable health indicators and greater eating disorder symptomatology among women with EDs. These results underscore the potential value of incorporating gender-informed perspectives into future research and clinical reflection, while highlighting the need for replication in larger and longitudinally designed studies. A well-developed national park scheme is of great significance in ensuring the sustainability of the ecological environment and addressing the risks of community green development. As a key mechanism for the transformation of ecological product value, the implementation and optimization of the concession system contribute to the coordinated development of national park protection and community interests. How to promote the transition of national park concession from “system establishment” to “system efficiency improvement” is an important issue in system optimization, and the key to solving this issue is to assessing the credibility of national park concession systems in the community. Community residents are important stakeholders in the national park concession system, and their perception of this system’s credibility reflects its levels of rationality, efficiency and sustainability. This study takes residents of four villages in Wuyishan National Park as an example, obtains data through a questionnaire survey, and uses linear regression analysis to study the influencing factors of residents’ credibility of national park concession systems from five aspects, including household location, demographic characteristics, functional perceptions of the concession system, normative perceptions of the concession system, and expectation perceptions of the concession system. The results show that: (1) Residents show different perceptions of the concession system in national parks; they generally believe that it conforms to the collective interests and should be permanent. (2) The normative perceptions and expectation perceptions of the concession system in national parks have a significant positive impact on its credibility. Furthermore, age and educational attainment significantly influence residents’ perceptions of the system’s credibility. The impact of household location on the credibility of national park concession systems is not significant. Full article

Cost code verification in state-funded construction projects remains a labor-intensive and error-prone task, particularly given the structural heterogeneity of project estimates and the prevalence of malformed codes, inconsistent units of measurement (UoMs), and locally modified price components. This study evaluates a deterministic GPT-based assistant designed to automate Vietnam’s regulatory verification. The assistant was developed and iteratively refined across four Action Research cycles. Also, the system enforces strict rule sequencing and dataset grounding via Python-governed computations. Rather than relying on probabilistic or semantic reasoning, the system performs strictly deterministic checks on code validity, UoM alignment, and unit price conformity in material (MTR), labor (LBR), and machinery (MCR), given the provincial unit price books (UPBs). Deterministic equality is evaluated either on raw numerical values or on values transformed through explicitly declared, rule-governed operations, preserving auditability without introducing tolerance-based or inferential reasoning. A dedicated exact-match mechanism, which is activated only when a code is invalid, enables the recovery of typographical errors only when a project item’s full price vector well matches a normative entry. Using twenty real construction estimates (16,100 rows) and twelve controlled error-injection cases, the study demonstrates that the assistant executes verification steps with high reliability across diverse spreadsheet structures, avoiding ambiguity and maintaining full auditability. Deterministic extraction and normalization routines facilitate robust handling of displaced headers, merged cells, and non-standard labeling, while structured reporting provides line-by-line traceability aligned with professional verification workflows. Practitioner feedback confirms that the system reduces manual tracing effort, improves evaluation consistency, and supports documentation compliance with human judgment. This research contributes a framework for large language model (LLM)-orchestrated verification, demonstrating how Action Research can align AI tools with domain expectations. Furthermore, it establishes a methodology for deploying LLMs in safety-critical and regulation-driven environments. Limitations—including narrow diagnostic scope, unlisted quotation exclusion, single-province UPB compliance, and sensitivity to extreme spreadsheet irregularities—define directions for future deterministic extensions. Overall, the findings illustrate how tightly constrained LLM configurations can augment, rather than replace, professional cost verification practices in public-sector construction. Full article
