Tourism is increasingly shaped by visual experiences of place mediated through television series and audiovisual fiction. Although film-induced tourism research has widely examined how media representations influence destination image and tourist responses, limited attention has been given to the perceptual and cognitive processes through which mediated landscapes are visually attended to and mentally organised, particularly from a neuroaesthetic perspective focused on early perceptual and attentional mechanisms in fictional contexts where tourism is not explicit. Addressing this gap, this study adopts a process-oriented neuroaesthetic approach to examine how landscapes in the television series Killing Eve are visually attended to and cognitively processed as destination imagery. An exploratory mixed-methods design combined qualitative content analysis of free recall responses (n = 260) with simulated visual attention modelling based on low-level visual features. The findings reveal a two-stage process of mediated landscape experience: visual attention initially guided by perceptual salience, followed by the selective cognitive stabilisation of certain elements as destination imagery through recall, imagination and narrative association. The study demonstrates that mediated landscapes are not processed as holistic destination images, but as selectively organised and emotionally inflected elements emerging from the interaction between visual attention and imagery processes. This study models how designable cues in digital heritage promotion shape advocacy through affect and memory. Relying on the stimulus–organism–response paradigm, we argue that three stimuli, Visual Sensory Appeal (VSA), Narrative Immersion (NI), and Perceived Authenticity (PA), trigger Emotional Engagement (EE) and become Destination Memory (DM), leading to Intention to Recommend (IR). A cross-sectional quantitative design with an online self-report survey was employed. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) we modeled 653 usable responses to test hypothesized stimulus–organism–response processes and Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) tested heterogeneity across gender, age, education, recent contact, cultural-travel frequency, preservation interest, prior heritage experience, and technology use. Direct associations revealed VSA was a strong predictor of IR, and EE and DM predicted IR positively. NI and PA were not incrementally directly affecting IR. Mediation tests revealed partial mediation for VSA (through EE and DM) and complete mediation for NI and PA; across all stimuli, DM far surpassed EE, suggesting memory consolidation as the overall mechanism. MGA revealed systematic segmentation: women preferred visual and authenticity approaches; men used affective conversion, narrative, and authenticity-to-memory more; young adults preferred story/memory levers; higher education made authenticity pathways legitimate; exposure, experience, sustainability interest, and technology use further conditioned strength of paths. Results sharpen S–O–R accounts by ranking visual design as a proximal driver and placing EE on DM as the central channel through which narrative and authenticity have their influence. In practice, the research supports visually consistent, memory-backed, segment-specific strategies for sustainable, inclusive heritage communication. Full article

In the context of the technological era, the smart tourism construct serves as a bridge between human and the artificial worlds, combining social sciences and neurosciences. This study aims to explore smart tourism through neuroscientific methods in order to shape the future of tourism destinations, using a hybrid methodology combining bibliometric techniques and content analysis. The findings reveal the integration of diverse scientific domains, highlighting a transdisciplinary approach. They offer clear evidence that neuroscientific methods in smart tourism integrate multiple areas of scientific knowledge, surpassing disciplinary boundaries. “Destination” stands out alongside “emotion”, “visual attention” and eye tracking (ET). The collaboration network reveals the emergence of a new school, called neurotourism in the 21st century, formed mainly by actors and organizations from the Global North, evoking the need to include the Global South in the research scenario. The predominant methods include ET, heart rate (HR), and electroencephalography (EEG), suggesting triangulation with traditional methods for robust results. Virtual reality emerges as the primary immersive technology, promising insights when integrated with neurosciences. This study’s practical and theoretical contributions guide smart tourism strategies and enhance destination experiences through neuroscientific methods, addressing a gap in the scientific literature while advancing ontological and epistemological understanding. Neuro-tourism is the application of neuroscience in tourism to improve marketing methods of the tourism industry by analyzing the brain activities of tourists. Neuro-tourism provides accurate real-time data on tourists’ conscious and unconscious emotions. Neuro-tourism uses the methods of neuromarketing such as brain–computer interface (BCI), eye-tracking, galvanic skin response, etc., to create tourism goods and services to improve tourist experience and satisfaction. Due to the novelty of neuro-tourism and the dearth of studies on this subject, this study offered a comprehensive analysis of the peer-reviewed journal publications in neuro-tourism research for the previous 12 years to detect trends in this field and provide insights for academics. We reviewed 52 articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database and examined them using our suggested classification schema. The results reveal a large growth in the number of published articles on neuro-tourism, demonstrating a rise in the relevance of this field. Additionally, the findings indicated a lack of integrating artificial intelligence techniques in neuro-tourism studies. We believe that the advancements in technology and research collaboration will facilitate exponential growth in this field. Full article
