Floods are among the most devastating hydrometeorological natural disasters worldwide, causing massive infrastructure and economic loss in low-lying, flood-prone developing countries like Bangladesh. Effective disaster mitigation relies on organized and detailed flood damage information to facilitate emergency evacuation, coordinate relief distribution, and formulate an effective disaster management policy. Nevertheless, the nation confronts considerable obstacles due to insufficient historical flood damage data and the underdevelopment of near-real-time (NRT) flood monitoring systems. This study addresses this issue by developing a replicable methodology for flood damage assessment and NRT monitoring systems. Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, we analyzed flood events from 2019 to 2023, integrating geospatial layers such as roads, cropland, etc. Analysis of flood events over the five-year period revealed substantial impacts, with 21.60% of the total area experiencing inundation. This flooding affected 6.92% of cropland and 4.16% of the population. Furthermore, 18.10% of the road network, spanning over 21,000 km within the study area, was also affected. This system has the potential to enhance emergency response capabilities during flood events and inform more effective disaster mitigation policies. Full article

The safety of lithium-ion batteries during transportation is critically important. However, current standards exhibit limitations, as their environmental testing parameter thresholds fail to fully encompass actual transportation conditions. To enhance both safety and standard applicability, in this study, we focused on four representative environmental conditions: temperature, vibration, shock, and low atmospheric pressure. Field measurements were conducted across road, rail, and air transport modes using a self-developed data acquisition system based on the NearLink communication technology. The measured data were then compared with the threshold values defined in current international and national standards. The results reveal that certain measured values exceeded the upper limits prescribed by existing standards, indicating limitations in their applicability under extreme transport conditions. Based on these findings, we propose revised testing parameters that better reflect actual transport risks, including a temperature cycling range of 72 ± 2 °C (high) and −40 ± 2 °C (low), a shock acceleration limit of 50 gn, adjusted peak frequencies in the vibration PSD profile, and a minimum pressure threshold of 11.6 kPa. These results provide a scientific basis for optimising safety standards and improving the safety of lithium-ion battery transportation. Full article

This article presents a spatial analysis of projects selected by city residents and implemented in five successive editions (2015–2019) of the participatory budgeting in Częstochowa, Poland. The study examines the relationship between the type of hard projects (small investments in public infrastructure and landscaping) and the pre-existing characteristics of the land use of each district. Kernel density estimation and Spearman correlation analysis were used. The highest spatial density occurred in projects related to the modernization of roads and sidewalks, recreation, and greenery, indicating a relatively high number of proposals within or near residential areas. Key correlations included the following: (1) greenery projects were more common in districts lacking green areas; (2) recreational infrastructure was more frequently chosen in areas with significant water features; (3) street furniture projects were mostly selected in districts with sparse development, scattered buildings, and postindustrial sites; (4) educational infrastructure was often chosen in low-density, but developing districts. The selected projects often reflect local deficits in specific land use or public infrastructure, but also stress the predestination of the recreational use of waterside areas. Full article

Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. This study proposes a design method for near-slope roads along multi-level slopes that integrates excavation requirements and post-construction ecological restoration through sprayed eco-protection. Firstly, the design principles and procedural steps for near-slope roads are established. The planar layouts of multi-level slopes are categorized, including mixing areas, turnaround areas, berms, and access ramps. Critical technical parameters, such as curve radii and widths of berms and ramps, as well as dimensional specifications for turnaround areas, are systematically formulated with corresponding design formulas. The methodology is applied to the ecological restoration project of multi-level slopes in the Huamahu mountainous area, and a comparative technical-economic analysis is conducted between the proposed design and the original scheme. Results demonstrate that the optimized design reduces additional maintenance costs caused by near-slope roads by 6.5–8.0% during the curing period. This research advances the technical framework for multi-level slope governance and enhances the ecological design standards for slope protection engineering. Full article

UAV-YOLO12: A Multi-Scale Road Segmentation Model for UAV Remote Sensing Imagery

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used for road infrastructure inspection and monitoring. However, challenges such as scale variation, complex background interference, and the scarcity of annotated UAV datasets limit the performance of traditional segmentation models. To address these challenges, this study proposes UAV-YOLOv12, a multi-scale segmentation model specifically designed for UAV-based road imagery analysis. The proposed model builds on the YOLOv12 architecture by adding two key modules. It uses a Selective Kernel Network (SKNet) to adjust receptive fields dynamically and a Partial Convolution (PConv) module to improve spatial focus and robustness in occluded regions. These enhancements help the model better detect small and irregular road features in complex aerial scenes. Experimental results on a custom UAV dataset collected from national highways in Wuxi, China, show that UAV-YOLOv12 achieves F1-scores of 0.902 for highways (road-H) and 0.825 for paths (road-P), outperforming the original YOLOv12 by 5% and 3.2%, respectively. Inference speed is maintained at 11.1 ms per image, supporting near real-time performance. Moreover, comparative evaluations with U-Net show that UAV-YOLOv12 improves by 7.1% and 9.5%. The model also exhibits strong generalization ability, achieving F1-scores above 0.87 on public datasets such as VHR-10 and the Drone Vehicle dataset. These results demonstrate that the proposed UAV-YOLOv12 can achieve high accuracy and robustness in diverse road environments and object scales. Full article

Vegetables and fruits grown in urban areas pose a potential threat to human health due to contamination with heavy metals (HMs). This study aimed to identify and quantify the concentrations of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) in tomatoes, leafy vegetables, and fruits collected from 16 allotment gardens (AGs) located in Warsaw. A total of 112 samples were analyzed (72 vegetable and 40 fruit samples). Vegetables from AGs accumulated significantly higher levels of HMs than fruits. Leafy vegetables, particularly those cultivated near high-traffic roads, exhibited markedly elevated levels of Pb, Cd, and Zn compared to those grown in peripheral areas. Lead concentrations exceeded permissible limits by six to twelve times, cadmium by one to thirteen times, and zinc by 0.7 to 2.4 times. Due to high levels of Pb and Cd, tomatoes should not be cultivated in urban environments. Regardless of location, only trace amounts of HMs were detected in fruits. The greatest health risk is associated with the consumption of leafy vegetables. Lettuce should be considered an indicator plant for assessing environmental contamination. The obtained Hazard Index (HI) values indicate that only the tested fruits are safe for consumption. Meanwhile, the values of the Hazard Quotient (HQ) indicate no health risk associated with the consumption of lettuce, cherries, and red currants. Among the analyzed elements, Pb showed a higher potential health risk than other metals. This study emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring of HM levels in urban soils and the establishment of baseline values for public health purposes. Remediation of contaminated soils and the implementation of safer agricultural practices are recommended to reduce the exposure of urban populations to the risks associated with the consumption of contaminated produce. In addition, the safety of fruits and vegetables grown in urban areas is influenced by the location of the AGs and the level of industrialization of the agglomeration. Therefore, the safety assessment of plant products derived from AGs should be monitored on a continuous basis, especially in vegetables. Full article

In periodic technical inspections (PTIs), evaluating the braking efficiency of light passenger vehicles at their Maximum Authorized Mass (MAM) presents a practical challenge, as bringing laden vehicles to inspection is often unfeasible due to logistical and infrastructure limitations. The fBrake method is proposed to overcome this issue by estimating braking efficiency at MAM based on measurements taken from vehicles in more accessible loading conditions. In this study, the fBrake method is validated by demonstrating the equivalence of its efficiency estimates extrapolated from two distinct configurations: an unladen state near the curb weight and a partially laden condition closer to MAM. Following the UNE 26110 standard (Road vehicles. Criteria for the assessment of the equivalence of braking efficiency test methods in relation to the methods defined in ISO 21069), roller brake tester measurements were used to obtain force data under both conditions. The analysis showed that the extrapolated efficiencies agree within combined uncertainty limits, with normalized errors below 1 in all segments tested. Confidence intervals were reduced by up to 74% after electronics update. These results confirm the reliability of the fBrake method for M1 and N1 vehicles and support its adoption as an equivalent procedure in compliance with UNE 26110, particularly when fully laden testing is impractical. The Detection of Pedestrians Crossing from the Oncoming Traffic Lane Side to Reduce Fatal Collisions Between Vehicles and Older Pedestrians

To inform the development of effective prevention strategies for reducing pedestrian fatalities in an ageing society, a retrospective analysis was conducted on fatal pedestrian–vehicle collisions in Japan. All pedestrian fatalities caused by motor vehicle collisions between 2013 and 2022 in Shiga Prefecture were reviewed. Among the 164 pedestrian fatalities (involving 92 males and 72 females), the most common scenario involved a pedestrian crossing the road (57.3%). In 61 cases (64.9%), pedestrians crossed from the oncoming traffic lane side to the vehicle’s lane side (i.e., crossing from right to left from the driver’s perspective, as vehicles drive on the left in Japan). In 33 cases (35.1%), pedestrians crossed from the vehicle’s lane side to the oncoming traffic lane side. Among cases of pedestrians crossing from the vehicle’s lane side, 54.5% were struck by the near side of the vehicle’s front, whereas 39.7% of those crossing from the oncoming traffic lane side were hit by the far side of the vehicle’s front (p = 0.02). Therefore, for both crossing directions, collisions frequently involved the front left of the vehicle. When pedestrians were struck by the front centre or front right of the vehicle, the collision speeds were higher when pedestrians crossed from the oncoming traffic lane side to the vehicle’s lane side rather than crossing from the vehicle’s lane side to the oncoming traffic lane side. A significant difference in collision speed was observed for impacts with the vehicle’s front centre (p = 0.048). The findings suggest that increasing awareness that older pedestrians may cross roads from the oncoming traffic lane side may help drivers anticipate and avoid potential collisions. Full article

During a volcanic eruption, a large volume of pyroclastic material can be deposited on the roads and roofs of the urban areas near volcanoes. The use of volcanic ash as an additive for the manufacture of bricks provides a solution to the disposal of part of this natural residue and reduces the depletion of a non-renewable natural resource, clayey soil, which brings some environmental and economic advantages. The pore system, compactness, uniaxial compression strength, thermal conductivity, color and durability of bricks without and with the addition of volcanic ash were evaluated through hydric tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry, ultrasound, uniaxial compression tests, IR thermography, spectrophotometry and salt crystallization tests. The purpose of this research is to determine the feasibility of adding 10, 20 and 30% by weight of volcanic ash from La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) in two grain sizes to produce bricks fired at 800, 950 and 1100 °C. The novelty of this study is to use two sizes of volcanic ash and fire the samples at 1100 °C, which is close to the liquidus temperature of basaltic magmas and allows a high degree of interaction between the volcanic ash and the brick matrix. The addition of fine volcanic ash was found to decrease the porosity of the bricks, although the use of high percentages of coarse volcanic ash resulted in bricks with almost the same porosity as the control samples. The volcanic ash acted as a filler, reducing the number of small pores in the bricks. The presence of vesicles in the volcanic ash reduced the compressive strength and the compactness of the bricks with additives. This reduction was more evident in bricks manufactured with 30% of coarse volcanic ash and fired at 800 and 950 °C, although they still reached the minimum resistance required for their use in construction. No significant differences in thermal conductivity were noticed between the bricks with and without volcanic ash additives, which is crucial in terms of energy savings and the construction of sustainable buildings. At 1100 °C the volcanic ash changed in color from black to red. As a result, the additive blended in better with the matrix of bricks fired at 1100 °C than in those fired at 800 and 950 °C. The bricks with and without volcanic ash and fired at 1100 °C remained intact after the salt crystallization tests. Less salt crystallized in the bricks with volcanic ash and fired at 800 and 950 °C than in the samples without additives, although their low compressive strength made them susceptible to decay. Combustion processes in compression ignition engines lead to the inevitable generation of nitrogen oxides, which cannot be limited to the currently desired levels just by optimising the in-cylinder processes. Therefore, simulation-based engine development needs to include all engine-related aspects which contribute to tailpipe emissions. Among them, the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) aftertreatment-related processes, such as urea–water solution injection, urea decomposition, mixing, NOx catalytic reduction, and deposits’ formation, are the most challenging, and require as much attention as the processes taking place inside the cylinder. Over the last decade, the urea-SCR aftertreatment systems have evolved from underfloor designs to close-coupled (to the engine) architecture, characterised by the short mixing length. Therefore, they need to be tailor-made for each application. This study presents the CFD-based development of a multi-platform SCR system with a short mixing length for mobile non-road applications, compliant with Stage V NRE-v/c-5 emission standard. It combines multiphase dispersed flow, including wall wetting and urea decomposition kinetic reaction modelling to account for the critical aspects of the SCR system operation. The baseline system’s design was characterised by the severe deposit formation near the mixer’s outlet, which was attributed to the intensive cooling in the mounting area. Moreover, as the simulations suggested, the spray was not appropriately mixed with the surrounding gas in its primary zone. The proposed measures to reduce the wall film formation needed to account for the multi-platform application (ranging from 56 to 130 kW) and large-scale production capability. The performed simulations led to the system design, providing excellent UWS–exhaust gas mixing without a solid deposit formation. The developed system was designed to be manufactured and implemented in large-scale series production. Full article

The analysis of 53 snow samples taken at different altitudes (from 350 to 1500 m above sea level) showed the presence of microplastics in 92.6% of samples in concentrations from 1 to 12 particles per square meter. In total, 170 microplastic particles were identified. The main polymers identified by Raman spectroscopy were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). These are typical components of plastic waste. The spatial distribution of microplastics showed elevated concentrations near settlements and roads. Notable contaminations were also recorded in remote mountainous areas, confirming the significant role of long-range atmospheric transport. Particles smaller than 0.5 mm dominated, having high aerodynamic mobility and capable of long-range atmospheric transport. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of microplastics in snow cover have been realized for the first time both in Kazakhstan and in the Central Asian region, which contributes to the formation of primary ideas and future approaches about microplastic pollution in continental inland regions. The obtained results demonstrate the importance of atmospheric transport in the distribution of microplastics. They indicate the need for further monitoring and microplastic pollution analyses in Central Asia, taking into account its detection even in hard-to-reach and remote areas. Full article

This study uses historical geography analysis, kernel density estimation, centroid migration modeling, and Geodetector techniques to analyze the 2000-year spatiotemporal evolution and formation mechanisms of 224 nationally designated traditional villages in China’s Qinling-Daba Mountains. The findings are as follows: (1) These villages significantly cluster on sunny slopes of hills and low mountains with moderate gradients. They are also closely located near waterways, ancient roads, and historic cities. (2) From the embryonic stage during the Qin and Han dynasties, through the diffusion and transformation phases in the Wei, Jin, Song, and Yuan dynasties, to the mature stage in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the spatial center of these villages shifted distinctly southwestward. This migration was accompanied by expansion along waterway transport corridors, an enlarged spatial scope, and a decrease in directional concentration. (3) The driving forces evolved from a strong coupling between natural conditions and infrastructure in the early stage to human-dominated adaptation in the later stage. Agricultural innovations, such as terraced fields, and sociopolitical factors, like migration policies, overcame environmental constraints through the synergistic effects of cultural and economic networks. Dust emissions from unpaved haul roads in open-pit coal mining pose a significant risk to air quality, health, and operational efficiency of mining operations. This study integrated real-time field monitoring with numerical simulations using ANSYS Fluent 2023 R1 to investigate the generation, dispersion, and migration of particulate matter (PM) at the Ha’erwusu open-pit coal mine under varying meteorological conditions. Real-time measurements of PM2.5, PM10, and TSP, along with meteorological variables (wind speed, wind direction, humidity, temperature, and air pressure), were collected and analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses. Wind speed and air pressure emerged as dominant factors in winter, whereas wind and temperature were more influential in summer (R2 = 0.391 for temperature vs. PM2.5). External airflow simulations revealed that truck-induced turbulence and high wind speeds generated wake vortices with turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) peaking at 5.02 m2/s2, thereby accelerating particle dispersion. The dust migration rates reached 3.33 m/s within 6 s after emission and gradually decreased with distance. The particle settling velocities ranged from 0.218 m/s for coarse dust to 0.035 m/s for PM2.5, with dispersion extending up to 37 m downwind. The highest simulated dust concentration reached 4.34 × 10−2 g/m3 near a single truck and increased to 2.51 × 10−1 g/m3 under multiple-truck operations. Based on spatial attenuation trends, a minimum safety buffer of 55 m downwind and 45 m crosswind is recommended to minimize occupational exposure. These findings contribute to data-driven, weather-responsive dust suppression planning in open-pit mining operations and establish a validated modeling framework for future mitigation strategies in this field. Simulating potential glacier collapses can provide crucial support for local disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. The Xiaomagou Glacier in the Amnye Machen Mountains, Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, has experienced five collapses in the past two decades. Field investigation and remote sensing observations indicate that the topography and bedrock characteristics of the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier, which is 3.5 km south of the Xiaomagou Glacier, are similar to those of the Xiaomagou Glacier. More importantly, the mass movement of the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier since 2018 closely resembles that of the Xiaomagou Glacier exhibited before its previous collapses. Therefore, in the context of rising temperatures, it is possible that the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier will collapse in the near future. Based on remote sensing imagery and the glacier’s surface elevation changes, we reconstructed the 2004 collapse process of the Xiaomagou Glacier via numerical simulation. The key parameters of the mass flow model were optimized based on the actual deposition area of the 2004 collapse. The model with optimized parameters was then used to simulate the potential Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier collapse. Two collapse scenarios were set for the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier. In Scenario 1, the lower half of the tongue detaches; in Scenario 2, the whole tongue detaches. Simulation results show that, in Scenario 1, the maximum mass flow depth is 72 m, the maximum mass flow speed is 51.6 m/s, and the deposition area is 5.40 × 106 km2; in Scenario 2, the maximum mass flow depth is 75 m, the maximum mass flow speed is 59.7 m/s, and the deposition area is 6.32 × 106 km2. In both scenarios, the deposition area is much larger than that of the Xiaomagou Glacier 2004 collapse, which had a deposition area of 2.21 × 106 km2. The simulation results suggest that the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier collapse could devastate the pastures and township roads lying in front of the glacier, seriously affecting local transportation and livestock farming; furthermore, it may deposit in the Qinglong River, forming a large, dammed lake. At present, the Qushi’an No. 22 Glacier remains in an unstable state. It is crucial to strengthen monitoring of its surface morphology, flow speed, and elevation. Full article
